I first reviewed the new Barney's not long after the new owners took over. As long time (60 years) customers of the original Barney's, I was really rooting for the new team. It was terribly disappointing. So tonight we gave them another chance, hoping for a little taste of the old Barney's. It was awful. If possible, the ribs were even drier and the sauce even more nauseating. I've had better BBQ sauce on Banquet frozen Dinner. $45 for two regular size rib dinners. Banquet--$3.99. Been going to Barney's since the 60's. It has never let us down. Always get ribs, moist, tender. We love the brown gravy. Usually get take out and plan so we have leftovers. Been coming to barney's for about 45 years off and on move away so only make it about twice a year . Food was good but use to be better . Not sure who owns it now ? The guy and gal preparing the food use there bare hands . He cuts the meat like a little kid like 30 little thin pieces of pork . Just cut a some 1/4 slices dude & be done was just weird to see . We had lunch here today for the first time. It was delicious. Husband had a French dip, ordered medium/rare and that's how it came. My turkey sandwich was perfect on a French bread roll. This place is amazing and a hole in the wall. I don't eat beef or pork anymore but when I did I would always get a half order of the ribs w/ the sauce on the side! So why Barney's? My daughter's school has an eat-out night once a month, part of your bill goes to the school, and this month the winner was Barney's. So off we went, and let's see how it compares to Back Forty and Everett & Jones. It's a simple storefront on Clayton Road, not fancy at all (real BBQ places are not fancy). I dug the pictures; my grandfather was an Arkie, lived "The Grapes Of Wrath", and had old western paintings like this in his old house on the farm. The 80s music in the background didn't quite fit, though, I expected country music. So not quite an authentic choke-and-puke from Texas. Me: half a chicken. Spicy skin, the bbq sauce added a good flavor to it. Fries were errrgh. Hunny: fish & chips, "they were real good." Girl: chicken strips, normal sized for grown-ups but too big for elementary school children. There is no kids menu. Chicken strips and grilled cheese sandwich are both for sale, but you may need a doggie bag. Overall, it's pretty good, but a definite step below Back Forty. It is convenient on the slow drive on Clayton Road if you want to stop and get some takeout food on the way home to east Concord or Clayton. So it is a choice, but the Cheese Steak Shop is a few steps away and has better food. read more

After a tough Friday on the job I was really looking forward to some barbecue. I thought this place was related to the Hickory Pit chain that used to exist throughout the Bay Area. Went in and ordered a combo plate which arrived smothered in some kind of brown sauce. This is not the barbecue sauce we were looking for! This is something akin to the pan drippings mixed with a little pepper and some flour. Kind of like a roux, more like a gravy, nothing at all like barbecue sauce. I even tried there red sauce which was the same gravy with more heat and vinegar. I was so disappointed that I had to send the combo plate back. I never do that... I switched over to the prime rib and although I ordered that medium rare the meal arrived medium well. I suffered through that silently and decided to order a pie ala mode in an effort to save the night. Finally a success, I probably should have just had several slices of pie all night because that was really delicious. Diner beware, this is not traditional BBQ. Based on all the other reviews apparently some people really like this stuff but I can't in all good taste call this barbecue. All credit is due to my server, she was very kind and understanding. I ordered tonight for Barney's in Concord and got nothing I orderd.I did not get a choice of sides like the menu said and when I asked for both of there BBQ saucers on the side I was given gravy instead. When I complained, they just blew me off .the gravy they gave me, the cook said that is what it comes with.i have never gotten gravy before while ordering BBQ. They treated me like shit for complaining.He said that there is no menu on line.There website sure has a menu posted that I followed while ordering He said if you want to see a menu you have to come into the restaurant .How do you order for pick up if there is no menu posted on there website.the menu online on there website has a price posted but when you come in they lied to me by telling me that there is no menu posted online. Came here because another BBQ place I wanted to go to was closed... glad I did because it was actually very yummy. Now, typically I get brisket, but this is not a regular bbq place (I.e. meat doesn't seem to be offered by the pound, no typical bbq meats, aside from ribs and the turkey)... after accepting that I was open for a new experience, and got the beef sandwich which is a sirloin sandwich. The meat was really tender and tasted amazing! The red sauce was okay. Somewhat like bbq sauce but not really. You can also get a brown sauce which is more like gravy. I added fries to the order- think they should add a side with the sandwich and just charge 9.90. I ordered a single rib as a side to try. It was good but I've made better ones myself (could've been more flavorful) and for the price not worth it. We also ordered the combination plate (sauce in the side), comes with ham, turkey, sirloin and a rib. it was good. Nothing super great but a satisfying dinner. This plate came with a side and a toasted burger bun (think a buttered toast or cornbread would be better). Generally felt like the food was too pricy, especially for location and being in concord. Service was wonderful though and really nice. We came late around 9.10 and they didn't rush us. read more

I was looking for some comfort food to take my mind off of the craziness with the coronavirus going around. I Picked up ribs from Barney's and boy did I make the right choice. The food was delicious. Let's be clear right upfront.....this is not your typical BBQ joint and it is far from a "5 Star" restaurant. I'm rating the actual ribs, service and value. That said, the ribs were huge, juicy, well-seasoned and smoked, southern style. After reading some reviews, I preemptively ordered the sauces on the side. I prefer a tangy, sweet-hot sauce, somewhat akin to St. Louis style versus the brown gravy-sauce, that I would use on meatloaf, for example. To each his own and avoid issues by ordering the sauces on the side and dip in your preference. Minimal ambience, but here again, I'm here for the RIBS, which satisfied my craving! My server was superb, the hot food was hot and the cool food cool! Passable slaw and left completely satisfied. Will certainly be back and will drive right by competitors. Make the extra 10 minute drive from Pleasant Hill or Martinez and enjoy the ribs. Will never "go Slow" again. read more

I hate to be "that" customer but I really paid 34.76 for a two meals, one meat plate and one pulled pork sandwich and they were served cold!! But that's just the start, the girl in the front gave me the wrong change, the fries were not cooked very well (some were raw, they were also cold) the ketchup dispenser was so watery that when I tried to get a small container of ketchup, it squirted all over my clothes. I've been coming here since there were wooden clocks on the wall for sale and I've literally never had anything less than a 5-Star experience. Tonight, Ash made the experience so much better! She was super sweet and accommodating, giving my daughter all the extra pickles she asked for (and not charging us - hope I'm not getting you in trouble!) and bringing everything out super fast even though it was a full house. She was bubbly and lovely. And then there's the food - always so good! Meat is always done perfectly, I love the red sauce, and my favorite is always the salad - super simple but always so good! Not that good at all. I ordered the combo plate and the ribs were a bit tough and the brown sauce they poured all over it was a big mistake. It didn't taste like any BBQ sauce I've ever had. Then I realized everyone orders the "Red Sauce". Much better but the brown sauce had already ruined the flavor. The ambiance was similar to a country cafeteria with naugahyde decor. The plates were way overpriced for the quality ($20 per person incl drink, tax, tip). The service was OK even though she forgot about us a couple of times. Definitely not coming back. Great place to keep to your KETO diet! Really friendly staff. Always really well cooked meats and they have a separate Keto menu! I usually get a steak with the cole slaw and salad that comes with it. The little amount of sugar in the house dressing doesn't bother me, but it's not strictly Keto. Called in an order for medium rare sliced beef, a French dip and rib diner.Spent about $60 on food to go got it home and the beef was on the well side called to complain, Anna took my number and said the manager would call me tomorrow. She Called me right back after speaking to the manager and was told I would have to bring the food back to get a credit or new food. Since I'm all the way across town I chose not to do so and post this review instead. I would suggest if you want to try Barney's that you eat in and don't take it to go unless you look at it before you leave. Today I sent my daughter to pick it up so nobody checked it. Spent over $50 the Chicken tasted old and dry the Ribs were not worth the price they were probably cooked yesterday. I asked for French Fries and got Potato Salad asked for extra Pickles and got 1.
