If you miss the OG Kasper's (Kasper's with a K, one of a kind) on Telegraph in Oakland, Lisa V's is a hidden gem at the edge of Concord that reminds you of the OG restaurant. A friend and I were looking for a place that grills hot dogs or sausages like Top Dog in Berkeley. Our search popped up with Lisa V's even though they do not grill the hot dog so we headed out to try. We were both pleasantly surprised. I had two traditional hot dogs with relish, chopped onions, chopped tomatoes and mustard which made it easy to eat. I also had potato salad which is homemade and tasty. My friend had a hot dog with sauerkraut and a taco. I thought the taco was unusual for a hot dog restaurant but my friend said the taco had really good flavor and the meat was tender. He said for it not being a Taqueria it was a nicely constructed taco. The hot dogs have a little bit of a snap when you bite, a tinge more of spice than a Casper's (with a C) hot dog, good flavor, perfectly steamed bun and perfect blend on condiments. For a great hot dog, this the place to east of the Caldecott Tunnel. To fill that hood hot dog craving, Lisa V's won't disappoint.

We have lived here forever and never got around to trying this place, so finally got around to it. The food is good and simple. No indoor dining yet due to the pandemic. Basic menu, but you get what you expect. As mentioned, the hot dog is a bit thin, but they do pile on the toppings. The potato salad was good and fresh. The chili nachos were laden with goodies and spicy from the jalapenos. The California burrito was big and flavorful. Overall, a good place to grab a quick bite.

I craved potato salad today, and my usual place had no salads, so I continued down the road to Lisa V's on Clayton in Concord. Lisa V's is in the same shopping center where K-Mart was. It's just across the driveway from Fiore. Lisa V's has some great potato salad; it's her dad's recipe. From what I understand, they have been in business for over 40 years and have quite a local following. Whenever someone asks about good potato salad, Lisa V's is mentioned. They also have hot dogs, street tacos, soups, burritos, homemade chili, nachos, and salads. Many rave about their street tacos, but I have yet to try them. It's a tiny but cute space with several tables inside and outside. I visited in the past and enjoyed a cheese dog and potato salad. Today I scored the potato salad and a tasty cup of chicken tortilla soup. It was perfect light lunch and satisfied my hankering.

My longtime favorite, this place is AMAZING!…read more I've been going to El Mercado Del Sol in Concord for YEARS, and let me tell you... this place never misses! It's one of those rare spots that stays consistently delicious no matter how many times you go, which is why I've happily supported them for so long. Their rotisserie chicken is out-of-this-world good--super juicy, perfectly seasoned, and roasted so the skin has that irresistible golden flavor. Every time I pick one up, I'm reminded why I've been coming here for so long. And the sides? Honestly, they're just as crave-worthy. The rice and beans are the ultimate comfort combo--flavorful, warm, and exactly what you want next to that chicken. The fresh tortillas are a game-changer: soft, warm, and perfect for making little tacos on the spot. And their salsa? Bright, fresh, and packed with just enough heat to make everything pop. I can't forget the carnitas either. After all these years, they remain some of the best I've had anywhere--tender, flavorful, with those crispy edges that make you want to order them again the moment you finish. El Mercado Del Sol is truly a Concord Gem! It's the kind of place that keeps you coming back because the food is consistently fantastic and made with care. I'm proud to support them and will keep doing so for many more years!

There's a ton of seating inside, and everything is very spacious. Though, I do have to say it always feels incredibly empty for some reason and there's never anybody actually inside outside of a few tables, but they do have tons of takeout so perhaps that's the tradeoff. However, don't let the lack of eating patrons inside the place put you off. This taqueria offers a good variety of different options as any taqueria would offer, and many of the options have pictures and stuff with it. The service here is, kind of hit or miss. The people in the front usually aren't overly friendly, and will sometimes feel like they're just there until the clock turns work over. Sometimes they're bordering on rude as they just kind of give you an indifferent stare as you're ordering, or will just feel as if they're half listening and not even looking up. The service was a bit better when I dined in, so perhaps maybe it's just the takeout, although it's usually the same person for both. Price wise, it's certainly not going to be cheap. If you want the best bang for your buck around here, El Aguila probably won't be it as there's a plethora of taquerias in this area. Food quality wise, it's pretty good overall. There are some tasty dishes here that will certainly warrant the little bit of extra cost here compared to other places. Things that I have tried here are the burritos and the torta. The burritos here are yummy as they they will have ingredients inside the burrito that is slightly different than your cookie cutter burrito at any other place. It really does help adds layers of flavor to it that other places do not offer. However, the best part of it is indeed the fact they grill the outside of the burrito to get that nice flakiness that wrap, and makes it a oh so rewarding experience. Meat portions was okay, but wish it had more especially for the cost. The torta I got was pretty good, as the ingredients inside were pretty typical so nothing really stood out. The break was toasted well, but I do wish it was a bit softer as it may have been to toasted. Should be toasted outside and soft inside, but this one just felt toasted all over. The meat portion also suffers from the same issue as the burrito as that it's not as generous as it could be. However, the flavors and taste were fine. It's certainly a nice place for those who want a bit of a different style of their Mexican cuisine. They have some flavors here that will be atypical of most of the cookie cutter taquerias around. While they are a bit expensive comparatively, the portions are actually decent (minus the meats). You can certainly be filled with just a single burrito. Worth a visit.

I pointed out to he waiter that he had a crumb on his chin and he wiped and chuckled like a nice champ. The music is pleasant but a bit louder than needed so I brought out the earplugs. The entire indoor setup is nice. Our food is arriving after what seems like a long wait meaning either the food is being served fresh, hot and tasty, or we are in for a mediocre experience. Our two plates arrived. Chilli relleno and Grilled chicken enchilada. I'm not a fan of the aesthetics of the smallish squair white plates. Reminds me of trying to look upscale. We own plates like these and that didn't work. Wife's enchilada plate was covered with three hot and very tasty chicken filled food bombs plus sides. The chili plate looked a little weak (too much plate showing) but that was the tastiest chilli relleno ever in 40 years of me enjoying these. Served hot with cheese filled up to the ying yang, an extra spiciness I have never had before that I loved and me wishing I had a spoon to scrape up the end of the sauce. Unfortunately the smallish rice and bean servings on both plates were luke warm and tasted so so. . I had similar hotter to those with tv dinners back in the day. The two plates and a coke at $43 has me scratching my chin on whether we will make that drive again. That is unless it is Sunday. Then possibly. .

After giving it some thought, I decided to return and explore what it was about Isla that everyone raved over. This time around, I ordered the fish tacos, and I was hooked! Isla's fish tacos are phenomenal--easily the best in the area and a must-have every single time. I usually go for the tilapia, though I've sampled the red snapper as well. They come out super crispy on the outside yet remain incredibly moist inside, with the salsa and toppings melding together perfectly. I also visited their new location today and was pleasantly surprised by the ample parking and comfortable seating. The space is beautiful, making it even more enjoyable to stop by for those irresistible fish tacos. Here's a quick rundown of my ratings: Fish (all varieties): 8.7/10 Birria: 7/10 (good, but not their standout item) Carne Asada Super Burrito: 5.8/10 When it comes to satisfying my fish taco cravings, Isla remains the only choice.

The place was pretty unassuming, with a short parking alleyway next to a gas station. However the inside (which it seems like was renovated a year ago, was really nice and inviting. It was spacious with a great bar area and even an outside patio area for some choice in where you wanna sit. The servers were really nice getting us started with drinks, chips and salsa, and a slew of different hot sauce bottles. they ranged from mild, to pretty hot and my favorites were the salsa verde and orange (some type of habanero?) sauces. The menu was really well organized and easy to navigate. One of the cool things is that if you order just 2 or more tacos (which are pricy to be fair but ginormous and filling), you can order some free sides and they provide plenty of it. I ordered the Norteno and Vampiro tacos while my partner ordered the Pescado and Patron. Norteno: 5/5 The first one I tried and it blew my socks off. The star of basically all of the specialty tacos is the fried cheese on the tortilla. It was luscious and charred nicely and gave a great backdrop to all of the toppings regardless of what you choose. The norteno, other than the cheese is a standard carne asada with pepper and cabbage slaw essentially and was nice and refreshing to start. Vampiro: 10/5 One of my favorite tacos (or in this case tostadas) I have ever had. Essentially a suped up version of the norteno but exchange the slaw for street taco toppings like cilantro onions and guacamole. It was kind of overwhelming how good it was that a few bites in you get somewhat full off of the flavors. Pescado: 5/5 nice and crispy and invoked a lot of the vibes of getting fish tacos on the beach in SoCal. The pico really shone on this one + the orange sauce over top was really nice. Patron: 5/5 tons of juicy shrimp - very simple compared to the others but great nonetheless. Sides: 5/5 Refried beans were the star here as it had all of that greasy lard flavor that everyone loves. The charred onions and nopales were great as well. The agua Fresca we ordered was solid as well. Ultimately this surprised us in such a great way. It is up there with some of the best Mexican restaurants we've tried in the Bay Area and it's no doubt worth a drive to if you are ever around the Concord/Walnut Creek area. Will be coming back soon to try the rest of the menu.
