I'm not really sure about Barnes to be honest with you guys. I googled the best fried chicken in Savannah and they were on the list. We came here just to try the chicken because I wanted it for my baby shower. The The piece that caught the shakes of seasoning was actually good. I couldn't eat the beans and potato salad because I was honestly scared. The building is old and dark, the hours matched the environment I guess. My MIL ended up ordering 50 fried and 50 baked October 4th and I didn't taste the fried chicken but it was all gone. The baked chicken had a good seasoning to it but it was just super dry. Note* Barnes was not that busy as parking lot looked half empty. To add injury to insult, the food prep staff was doing more talking than preparing to get customers' orders out. Even one waitress was addressing her concerns with the prep staff about paying attention and getting customers' orders correct as one customer wanted her money back. When I got back to work, how disappointed I was. I order texas toast, I got a roll, macaroni and pull pork solid cold after waiting an extra 20 minutes. Today, July 24, 2026,I had a doctor appointment late in the afternoon near the hospital so, upon leaving my appointment I decided to stop by Barnes Restaurant on the way home for a carry-out for dinner. I hadn't been to Barnes in a few years and thought it might be nice to bring home some BBQ. It was a scorching July day as I arrived at the restaurant. There is an entrance for those dining in, and an entrance for take-out orders. Upon entering the take-out entrance the first thing I noticed was that it was sweltering in the customer waiting area. Little or no AC, making it very uncomfortable. I picked up a menu to check to BBQ selections and found the menu very greasy. It was an all black staff and all blacks in the customer waiting area. I was the only Caucasian there. It was a very ghetto vibe, run-down, with a dirty floor. Upon approaching the counter to place my order with the server, there was no smile or greeting, or graciousness, just a matter-of-fact "can I take your order" combined with a look of annoyance. Mind you, I don't expect to be showered with love upon entering a restaurant, but a little social civility, a smile, and thank you for coming in would be nice. I placed my order for two "Regular" Pulled Pork BBQ plates for $13.95 each. Each plate came with 2 sides, toast, pickles, and a small container of BBQ sauce. There was a sign near where you place your order emphatically exclaiming that each order came with only one sauce and that the customer would be charged for additional sauces. I'm guessing there must have been issues with people asking for too much sauce cups in the past. After placing my order I sat in the hot waiting area and... well... waited. After about 20 minutes in the heat my order was ready and I gladly grabbed my take-out and left. There was no thank you... I was handed my order and that was that. Upon arriving home I unboxed the BBQ plates and was very dismayed. First off, I was shorted 1 BBQ sauce cup. There should have been two, one for each BBQ plate, but there was only one. There was no pickles in either plate. There was only 1/2 of a piece of toast in each plate. You'd think one entire piece of toast would be a serving. There was zero butter on the toast. It was just 1/2 of a dry piece of bread. The pulled pork was large chunky strands of rubbery, dry, overcooked pork, with the texture of rubber. This was unlike any pulled pork I have ever eaten. It might could have been somewhat edible had I had my full compliment of BBQ sauce but, remember, they shorted me on sauce. The sides were far from stellar. The baked beans were okay, but tasted like they came from a can. BBQ beans is suppose to have a little onion and bacon, and BBQ flavor. Not these, just plain-Jane. The green beans were totally void of any seasoning. Tasteless would be a better descriptive term. Cole slaw was okay, but nothing to write home about. Another thing about the sides.... they were a TINY TINY portion, packaged in a little 4 Oz sample cup. Hardly enough for a legitimate serving. In closing, it is quite evident that Barnes Restaurant in Savannah has taken a major nose dive. What was at one time a celebrated quality restaurant that packed in the patrons has deteriorated to a shameful excuse for a restaurant. It is obvious Barnes Restaurant is riding on its name and former reputation to keep the doors open. No doubt, the owners and management have given up and are no longer interested in good food and good service. It's a cryin' shame, too. I 100% do not recommend this restaurant for any degree of a joyful dining experience. I, for one, have spent my last dollar at Barnes Restaurant. read more

I don't know what's going on with Barnes. They are falling off really really bad so the other day I went and I ordered a choice of three seafood platter. I ordered scallops, founder, and shrimp for a to go so before I got there, they called me and said they were out of scallops. I say fine. You can replace it with oysters, so I went to go and pick up my food. The inside definitely can stand a deep cleaning and obviously it was at least one new person there at the register who didn't know how to work the register so once I got my phone and I went home to eat my food. My fries look like they were whatever they had left over the red rice was at least a day old. The flounder was OK. The oysters seemed like they were a couple of days old and they reheat them up and the shrimp was nasty. They don't divine their shrimp that's nasty. They won't be seeing me no time soon. read more

I went with a party of 9 and when we arrived there was pretty much no one else there. We waited a couple of minutes before an employee came out and noticed us waiting. It seemed that this employee was one of only like 3 employees in the whole place. She was responsible for seating people, taking orders, and serving all the tables. At one point there was a group waiting for a table but they waited so long that they just left. Despite the service being really slow the employee was very nice and she tried her best to serve us well. The food was surprisingly good. Everyone in our party was happy with their food. We had a reunion catered by Barnes this past weekend. Barnes delivered to the site. They brought everything we needed for our event. Delivery was on time and only took minutes to set up. The Barnes employee that delivered was very helpful and went out of her way to make sure all was well before she left. The food was fresh, hot, and got rave reviews from everyone. I had grouper with mac n cheese and green beans. They came with hush puppies and a side Caesar salad. The grouper was fried and just awful. So were the hush puppies. The green beans were awesome. My go to spot for a quick salmon dinner, but like everything else things have changed. Limited staff and hours. I always get the grilled salmon, potato salad and green beans. But this time it failed, the salmon seemed under cooked in spots, the potato salad was unusually hard and the green beans had no taste. A fairly large restaurant with its own parking which was very convenient. The outside was clean, and so was the inside. I liked how the inside decor gives southern hospitality vibes. They're pretty short staffed so it took a little while to get seated, but the waitress was very nice and had a great attitude. This restaurant has southern dishes and different options. This was our first time eating here. The server was holding it down due to staff constraints...she made it work. The food was delicious. I would give it 4.5 stars out of 5 if I could, only because the collards tasted more like turnips or canned, and the catfish was served whole minus the head. I'm more accustomed to filets. The Brunswick stew was okay. The macaroni and cheese is not pot and was delicious. Thank God! The seafood is yummy! The hush puppies were light on the inside and had a hint of sweetness. Sorry for the lack of pictures but we were hungry and it was a lunch rush so we were eating for a while for the food. For it to be as busy as it was we got our food in a good amount of time. My fiancé got a 1/2 rotisserie chicken with baked beans and Mac n cheese and he devoured it. He said it's the best rotisserie chicken he's ever had and this man eats some rotisserie chicken lol. I got the 3 piece fried chicken meal with Brunswick stew and collard greens. The fried chicken was perfectly cooked, juicy inside and crispy outside. The collards we're the best I've ever had and the Brunswick stew was a little different than I'm used to (it was barbecue based) but it was also pretty good. And last but CERTAINLY NOT least the sweat tea was AMAZINGGGG. The ambiance was great, it felt like a southern sit down restaurant not too dressy not too casual. The service was top tier as well. They have a wide variety on the menu, chicken fingers, pizza, seafood, wood fired BBQ, wings, and much more ... something for everyone. Atmosphere is relaxed, with a lot of booths, so it is good for small groups of four. Music is a bit loud, easy listening vocals. My salmon was good, cole slaw was typical, if not a bit sweet. Brunswick stew was heavy on meat, but a tad salty. Two pieces of white toast was a bit odd to accompany a salmon plate, not exactly complimentary. All in all, it was good food at a good value. I have been going to Barnes for many years. My experience last Tuesday for their meatloaf special was not as good. Everything went ok until I received the check. I thought that it was a little high so I looked at the menu and saw that the price was higher on my check than on the menu. I brought it to the attention of the waitress. She explained that she just pressed and button and the price would automatically appear. She was going to notify the manager. I didn't have the time to wait. I sent a message to them via their website and then a day or so later I made a post on their Facebook page. To date the management has not tried to contact me or apologize. I understand that there are going to be price increases. They should at least change the prices on the menu before changing it in their computers. I was there around 2:30. They apparently had been charging that price all day. They apparently were charging a higher price to ALL of their customers. I hope that management starts doing their job better. Y'all be sure to look at your checks and compare it to the menu when you go there. read more

I just paid $10+ for 3 wings and 3 frozen mozzarella sticks and they're stone cold not to mention pathetic that they only give you 3 of each! It would be nice if this was mentioned. The waitress was sweet but not very professional and asked my advice on buying a house . . . now, I'm not a realtor or anything and I don't think we were even talking about houses, maybe we talked about neighborhoods in general or something but somehow she got on to houses and asked my advice. I am so glad to support local restaurants who remain consistent in the flavor of their food. I ordered off the appetizers menu because I did not know what I really wanted to eat. I had 4 onion rings, a bowl of crab stew, and the shrimp salad. Well, the presentation of the food was the thing that made me forget (as it always do) to take the coveted pictures of the food! I guess I get too excited and before I know it, empty holes are on the plate and that is not quite picture perfect! Back to the food... I know onion rings are mundane, but THESE onion rings were spiritual. The were light crispy and fried to an airy goodness. The crunchy and sweet texture of the rings were absolutely the best! Next, the crab stew had crab in it. No seriously, it was not crab essence, it was actually loaded with lumps of real blue crab meat throughout the large bowl. It also had a creamy richness to it that did not taste milky at all! Finally, the shrimp salad was rocking too. Shrimp overload salad is what I am affectionately renaming this dish. I have never been disappointed with the food from Barnes, usually partaking in their take out service most frequently. But I have to say the last two visits to eat in have been dissapointing due to poor service. Now keep in mind the service was not rude or anything, it's just that the food took so long to come out. It was that way for the prior visit as well. The takeout orders are always prepared promptly - I've even waited while it was prepared. This service was strange in that after waiting for the food for quite some time. When we asked about the wait, our server explained that they had run out of pulled pork for my sandwich and had sent someone out to get more - I actually laughed out loud. I've been to BBQ restaurants that frequently run out of brisket or some other cut in greater demand - but pulled pork?!? It's like the IHOP running out of pancakes... After the food arrived to the table our server awkwardly waited there while we ate our first bites to see what we thought... it was all a little weird if I'm being honest. To add to it, my mother's baked potato had cooled while we were waiting for the rest of the order and had gone hard as a rock. I am not accustomed to leaving negative feedback. The experience today has broken that thought. The hostess, servers & the artwork on the walls were the best part if this outing. Barnes has been a staple in Savannah for many years. I've had to spend many nights at Memorial Hospital just blocks away and have always ordered meals from them when the hospital food just couldn't cut it. My experience in hospitality runs the gambit from B.O.H. to F.O.H. It has also afforded me the opportunity to work with same amazing chefs in our community. Something has happened in the "kitchen" of Barnes. Something as simple as crab stew had to be returned is a bad sign. The soup was like warm and the chunks of crabmeat were ice cold. Moving to the entree left even more disappointment. Simple 3Seafood Combination. Fried flounder lacked any thought of seasoning, crabcake was overcooked and the oysters were overcooked as well.
