I've driven past this place so many times and never thought to go. Yesterday, I went out for a team lunch and my experience was pretty great. I ordered the butternut squash soup as my starter. It was delicious. I don't usually do sweeter soups, but there was a light hint of cinnamon and it was just what I needed. My coworkers ordered the mussels, lobster bisque soup, and octopus. They all seemed to enjoy it. Not an octopus eater, but apparently the octopus is really good here. For the entree, I ordered the organic salmon with the grilled organic faro, beets, leeks, & spinach. Each ingredient really complemented the others. It was really good and I highly recommend it if you are a salmon person. The plating was absolutely beautiful as well. My coworkers ordered the penne vodka, cacio e pepe, chicken milanese, and mushroom risotto. Going with the pasta is a yummy and safe bet if you're afraid to try something different. The portion sizes are pretty decent so we were stuffed. The service was pretty good overall. The servers were attentive and answered questions well. My only call out is water. I prefer that servers are really on top of when water needs to be refilled, but thats just a preference I have. The interior of the restaurant is really nice and updated. Wifey and I have wanted to come here for YEARS and finally did so for our anniversary this year. When we arrived we were greeted immediately and brought to our table (we had a reservation). As we sat looking at the menu we ordered white sangrias and were brought a great selection of olives and delicious hummus as a starter. Bread was great, though no butter or olive oil was provided-which was odd. Our waiter Besi(?) went over some questions we had bout the menu and specials and was really helpful-he seemed to know the food backwards and forward. For appetizers we got lobster bisque (me) and the burrata, tomato, arugula and fig salad. For entrees Wifey went with the Sea bass special with spinach and giant white beans and I also ordered Sea bass, but with a butternut squash risotto. We also ordered a side of roasted Brussels with bacon. Everything about this meal was outstanding. We both got a second drink with dinner - a nice Sauvignon Blanc for Wifey and I had a second sangria. The lobster bisque was one of the best I've ever had, the sea bass was perfectly done for both of us and the Brussels made me want to lick the bowl. Barka was a nice find on the area. The place is neatly tucked in RT 46 in mountain lakes. Plenty of parking and friendly service, the place welcomes you for a nice evening. The bar is fully stocked and has a great selection of wine. We finished our drinks at the bar and were seated promptly at a cozy table. We ordered a bottle of wine which was not in stock but the owner offered another equally pleasing option. We ordered the octopus which was okay but the best appetizer was the goat cheese with pistachios and honey. The goat cheese was so good! Had nothing like that before and it was a pleasant surprise. For entrees the fettuccine in the parmesan bowl is amazing. The sauce covers every piece of pasta. We also shared the fish special that night . The fish was fresh, flaky and full of flavor. Here's the deal: Barka is an upscale restaurant with an inviting atmosphere which allows for a great dining experience! There is a bar area which is a nice spot to just sit and have drinks. Also some treble tops if you choose to have dinner in that area. The restaurant has white high bank booths on opposite sides which allow for guests to face the restaurant floor. There is also a private room for larger gatherings and a wine room with a beautiful decor. The food was great!! We had the grilled octopus appetizer which was very tender & well seasoned For dinner we ordered 2 fish dinner specials John Dory & oven roasted Bronzino!! Both DELICIOUS! Yea it's not a cheap place, special entrees are $35-45, with some high end steak options on the menu as well! However there are some entree in $25 range as well! My wife and I have been driving past Barka for years saying "that place looks good" but for some reason or another we never dined there. Finally, tonight, I made a reservation for our anniversary dinner. Uneven, would be the word that best describes our experience. The dining area is quite nice. Definitely an upscale vibe. Several half moon booths around the sides of the main dining room with tables in the center. The next thing I noticed was the music. It was standard house music which is fine for a bar or a club. But here, it seemed to be a poor choice. The constant bass thump didn't match the room or the clientele. Maybe I'm just getting old? The service was uneven. They appear to have plenty of servers. Yet, we were seated at our table for around 10 minutes until our waiter greeted us. At which point we ordered our drinks. About 10 minutes later our waiter took our order for apps and mains. Five minutes later our drinks and appetizers came out at the exact same time. It would have been nice if things were spaced a bit more. Drinks first, followed by apps a few minutes later. For apps we split the Barka salad which was essentially a simple Greek salad. It was alright, but quite small when considering the cost. We also had the crab cake which was the stand out dish of the evening. Lots of crab with very little filler. Five star crab cake. For drinks my wife ordered the Barka mule which was excellent. I ordered a Heineken. Not a fave, but their beer list is very limited. It took us around 15 minutes to finish our apps and drinks and we then sat there for another 30 minutes waiting for our main courses. I ordered the Branzino and my wife ordered the filet mignon. The fish was expertly filleted, well prepared and delicious with a caveat that I will mention shortly. The filet was a little disappointing but acceptable. Not a grade A filet in my opinion. Served on top of a bed of garlic mashed potatoes. Not much of a presentation but no big deal. The issue with both dishes was that they came out luke warm. Not even close to hot or optimal. Which means to me that both dishes were sitting for quite a while before they were served. I didn't complain because reheating isn't a desirable option and a replacement order would have taken too long. With that said we did finish everything. Waste not, want not. Finally, desert. We ordered cappuccino which was on point and the New York cheesecake. It really wasn't NY style cheesecake. It wasn't soft and creamy. It was more like Italian style. Firm and dense with lemon flavor. It was probably very good for an Italian cheesecake. But our expectations were NY style and we aren't huge fans of Italian style. With all that said we still managed to finish every last bite. Overall it was an uneven experience, but not bad. I will probably dine at Barka again in the future but I'm not in any rush to return. 55555 ! That's all I have to say about Barka. Make no mistake. Barka is not cheap by any measure. In fact it is one of the most pricey meals you can have in the area. Especially after a few cocktails . I dont mind paying premium prices however as long as I receive premium food and premium service. Barka meets this challenge in spades. I've been here a few times and each time, the service, the food and everything is a solid 5. I've eaten everywhere in the area both in and outside of New Jersey. I have to say, this is one of the top restaurants I have ever eaten at. Certainly one of the top if not THE top restaurant in this part of NJ. Don't fret however if you are amoung the more budget minded. They have a casual menu available in the bar area. We saw sliders and other light plates coming out. They also have pizza.It all looked very good. If it's at all the same quality as the main dining room, it must be great. My wife and I have not tried this yet but we cant wait to come back and try it. We have resolved to save some $$$ here and there so we can afford to come here more often. Dinner at Barka? Phenomenal. I had dinner reservations for my party of 4 at 6pm on a Thursday. We got there a couple minutes late and were seated right away. Barka is an upscale Mediterranean restaurant serving classic and sophisticated seafood dishes. While we waited to order, our waiter provided us some complementary bread, hummus, and olives. I really enjoyed the hummus although I wish the bread was warm. I started off with the Lychee Ginger Martini (~$13). It's made with Belvedere Vodka, Lychee Liquor, Domaine de Canton, Ginger Liquor, and a splash of sour mix. What caught my eye was the lychee, so I figured I'd give it a try. If you like martinis, then this is a good drink for you to try. I prefer drinks a bit sweeter (like cocktails), so although it was a good try, I would probably go off of their cocktail menu if I come back here. For appetizers, we shared the Crab Cakes (~$19), Grilled Baby Artichokes (~$16), Veggie Chips (~$16), and Fried Calamari (~$16). The Crab Cakes were some of the best I've had. They were served with a Meyer Thyme Aioli which was super light and citrusy. The crab cake was fresh and tender on the inside and crispy on the outside. The Fried Calamari was battered lightly and was also beyond fresh! It was served with that same Meyer Thyme Aioli which I pretty much inhaled and tomato sauce which I didn't care for. The Veggie Chips include zucchini and eggplant and were served with tzatziki sauce. They were fried to perfection and the tzatziki sauce was great for dipping. The Grilled Baby Artichokes were coated with garlic and oil, and although it was my least favorite, it was still a good try! All the portions for the appetizers are fair compared to the price and great for sharing! Now onto the main course! I ordered the Chilean Sea Bass (~$42). This entree comes with butternut squash risotto cooked in a lemon white wine with grilled asparagus on the side. The menu doesn't say it comes with asparagus and it just so happens to be my least favorite vegetable. I took a few bites just to try it but ended up not touching the rest. The Chilean Sea Bass was out of this world. Being a thick piece of fish, it was still cooked uniformly throughout. It was buttery and rich in flavor. The butternut squash risotto was addicting. I could not stop eating it. Aside from the asparagus, my plate was wiped clean! If you visit Barka, I recommend trying the sea bass here because you will not be disappointed. Last but certainly not least, dessert! I ordered the Creme Brûlée (~$15). It's caramelized beautifully and topped with a few strawberry slices. The creme was light and sweet with bits of actual vanilla in each bite. At this point, I was stuffed but it was a great way to end a delicious meal. All in all, Barka is the perfect place to dine for a date, business meeting, or to just enjoy some fresh seafood! I highly recommend giving them a try if you're in the area. read more

We ordered a few appetizers for the table which we all enjoyed including the calamari, veggie chips and crab cakes. Bread is served with complimentary olives and hummus. I ordered a glass of the Malbec and the Diver Scallops as my main. Scallops had a nice sear on them and were cooked perfectly. The risotto was creamy and, for an added bonus, had small bits of bacon and crab meat. Delicious! Finished my meal with a new york style cheesecake which had a hint of... lemon? Wasn't a fan of the slight citrus taste but it had a great creamy texture. Our reservation was for 6 and we left at 10pm after a night of chit chat and drinks. We did not feel rushed at all! We decided to try it out, and it was rather early, which worked out because they had a prefix early bird special. The price was reasonable, and it included an appetizer, mean, plates, and dessert. They had a variety of options. I had the heart of palms salad , the salmon and their version of chocolate mousse. It was not only delicious but beautifully plated. We were not in the main dining room but in a very nice and open space in the back. The service was very friendly and the quality of the filet mignon and salmon were top notch. The salad was also very fresh and the gorgonzola cheese that complemented it was tasty. The pita bread was also warm and fluffy and there was plenty... minus one star though because the hummus that it came with was maybe one tablespoon for half a table and was extremely bland. We ate here twice the first time was much better than the second. The first the coconut halibut was very good but could use more toppings. Both times the burrata was fantastic. My husband liked his pizza. However the calamari was meh at best and the filet was terrible. The filet was ordered medium , the outside was charred/burnt the inside was sorta medium. The sauce served with was ok the potatoes were terrible and the asparagus was good but average. The baklava was bad and the strawberry served with it was mushy. Worst of all, the second time we went the restaurant was so hot it was unpleasant to even try to eat. We each had one drink and if it wasn't so hot we would have had more bc they were good but that wasn't possible. Overall, I'd only go back to have the burrata and halibut (both of which were specials). read more

My entree an 8oz. filet mignon was prepared perfectly medium rare just as requested. The delicious steak came on a bed of a perfectly executed, and delicious, mushroom risotto (one of my favorites). Decor is gorgeous, chic, and modern, bathrooms are spotless, roomy and bright, food was fresh, light, and full of passion. The octopus app is the best around. SO PLENTIFUL! no one gives that much in an app and it is cooked to perfection with crazy good charcoal flavor. Every bite is a little piece of heaven. We had the tuna and chilean sea bass (see the pictures). Fish was so fresh and cooked and seasoned perfectly. I loved to watch the chef pour his heart into these dishes while preparing them in the kitchen, a true professional. We were treated so nice and warm by the staff. We got to meet everyone. The owner, the chef, the bartender, the wait staff were all kind, courteous, and professional. Prices are totally reasonable if you think of decor, service, and quality. We eat at Barka quite often since it's local but the last few visits have been unpleasant. Our most recent visit was yesterday, 10/21. We sat in the bar area because we were told by the host that reservations were running behind. Bartender took care of us, she was alone from what it looked like. We put in apps and it took 40 mins to get them. The bartender planned the slow kitchen but we saw others sat after us get their apps much faster and before us. We ordered another round of drinks when we placed our order and watched the bartender continue to make drinks for new guests at the bar included a party of 6. Our dinner showed up and we still didn't have the drinks. 1 meal was good and the other was not. $45 for an entree that was overcooked fish, wayyyy under seasoned and slimy fish skin. The restaurant is beautiful and they were hosting a wedding reception and the DJ was blasting the music, many customers complained. Paying almost $170 for a dinner out is fine with us but only if it's worth it and this dining experience was not! read more

I was visiting family from out of town and went to Barka because family heard good things about the place. Food was just ok. First, they brought out a very small welcome plate with a few olives and small slices of cheese, which were both ok. They served a small basket of bread....however, without butter. I had a pasta dish and the pasta was undercooked, in other words, very al-dente. No cheese was offered over the pasta. Also, small portions, which is fine if the quality is excellent. Service was a bit uncomfortable. I had a feeling of being rushed through dinner. The service staff was clearing plates off the table when there was still food on the plate and didn't ask if we were finished. Then, they stood around hovering and staring at your table, making it uncomfortable to eat and enjoy your meal. The ambiance was ok. The restaurant itself is very nice. However, they played techo music during dinner and insisted it was mediterranean. It was not a relaxing, enjoyable environment. I felt like I was in a nightclub playing bad music, not in a fine dining establishment enjoying a meal. I truly enjoy dining in fine dining establishments, unfortunately, I did not enjoy this experience and would not recommend. read more

Very nice little gem on Route 46 in Mountain Lakes. I have only come here for lunch a few times, but have loved it each time. Definitely recommend the crab cakes. They're meaty - a bit on the stringy side but you know it's real crab meat and not stuffed with filler. The seafood kabobs are great and the salmon was melt-in-your mouth tasty. It's usually pretty quiet at lunch, so this is probably more of a dinner place and they advertise a really good happy hour I'd like to try one day!
