My boyfriend and I don't eat out much anymore since we cook a lot at home (almost at restaurant quality not to toot my own horn), so we have a pretty high bar when we decide to go out to eat. Bar Volpe definitely hit that bar and we definitely will be coming back again. Shout out to our waiter Eric for giving us a great date night! Food: Panzerotti - Perfectly deep fried with so much flavor! The spinach and artichoke were seasoned beautifully and had the perfect amount of cheese. The tomato sago complimented it quite nicely and it by itself is something that is slurp worthy. Fritti Misti - We actually got this dish after our entree after we saw another table get it. It just looked that good. The seafood was lightly battered, crispy, and perfectly cooked. The sauces were a nice compliment and balanced out the oiliness/fat of the batter. The fried lemon was surprisingly delicious to eat as well! It was a great palate cleanser! Rigatoni All'Amatriciana - Don't sleep on this dish. My favorite (although everything tasted absolutely divine). The complexity and depth in the sauce is out of this world. You can taste the quality of ingredients and the time it took to really develop the natural flavors. Also the pasta. We found out from our waiter that Chef Karen (Who is the owner and is a world renowned chef; please look her up), makes the pasta fresh every morning! It was perfectly al dente. Orecchiette- The orecchiette was the perfect vessel to hold in all the complex flavors. (Also the cook of the pasta was perfect, duh.) We loved how nutty the sauce was which we actually found out came from coriander! You can really tell how much thought came into preparing this dish with the mixture of carrots, broccoli rabe, and in to cooking the lamb. Gelato en Brioche- My assumption is that the pistachio ice cream was shipped directly from Sicily, Italy. The ice cream was a bit icy, but the flavor did not disappoint. I love pistachio ice cream and it was so much fun eating this like an ice cream sandwich with the brioche bun. My only suggestion was that I wish I had some whole/crushed pistachios in order to have some sort of crunch factor. Nevertheless, such a perfect way to end our dinner. Average Italian place in the South End, was not too impressed. Was able to sit outside with the nice weather, which is just a sectioned off area on the street with some tables and umbrellas (was VERY noisy with traffic and overhead helicopters). For dinner I ordered the fior di zucca (squash blossoms), farro arancini, burrata pomodoro, and the orecchiette. I thought the squash blossoms, which were filled with ricotta, were bland and lacked ANY seasoning. Most disappointing dish of the night. The burrata with tomato, nectarine, almond, and white balsamic also lacked any real flavor. The orecchiette and lamb ragu was seasoned better, but pasta was not al dente and the amount of meat was scarce. The arancini was drizzled with orange blossom honey and a black truffle aioli on top, and was my favorite dish at this restaurant. The flavor really popped with the arancini; I would return for these with a glass of wine (and would sit inside). read more

We received the bread that they serve after asking for it twice. And it came totally fried soaked in oil. We sent it back and even the manager knew before I even said anything, "too much oil? "Then we received the main dishes and I ordered the Crab with lemon and you did not taste the crab (3 minute pieces of crab as shown), you did not taste the pasta, all you tasted was pure lemon so that was sent back. As you can see in the image how much oil is in one dish compared to the other dish that came as a replacement for the first dish. Tremendous inconsistency here. They tried to appease us by giving us a tiramisu. It came out covered with cocoa and sea salt. Why the hell in the world would you ever put salt on tiramisu? Another one that we sent back although it was a nice gesture. Like I said before, people eating here must have never owned a restaurant. I'm glad I was able to try Bar Volpe but probably would never go back. I got to try a whole bunch of things (most of which I forgot to take a picture of). For the price and portion sizes - nothing was really memorable but not terrible either. For starters, we got the Bufala Mozzarella, Farro Arancini, and Spinach Artichoke Panzerotti. Of the 3, the arancini was probably the best? It was kinda sweet which was unexpected for an Arancini. As for the panzerotti, it was just a calzone but dressed up. For the entrees we got the casarecce al Nero, fazzoletti al marsala, and cozze in brodetto. The first two were pastas and again - just fine. And the last dish was mussels. Nothing too crazy either. Overall, my biggest complaint is that every dish just lacked any distinctive or memorable flavors. If you prefer milder flavors then I think Bar Volpe might be your spot. read more

Bar volpe has been on the list for a while and finally got to check it out. The restaurant was really big with indoor and outdoor dining. Everything was clean and the kitchen was open. The menu mirrors something you'd find in Italy where the portions are Italian portions, not American Italian portions. Let's start with what I wouldn't revisit. Grilled lamb skewers, and the pork rigatoni. The grilled skewers were seasoned but none of the flavors excited me. When we first got the order, it was black and blue. It was supposed to be medium rare, but it was too rare for us. Without asking they fired a new order to a perfect medium. Props for the service. The rigatoni was undercooked than Al dente and there wasn't much meat. I would just stay away from that. The good but not amazing was the grilled octopus. It wasn't over cooked and had nice flavor. The must reorder: the mussels were in a shrimp butter sauce which had a great seafood flavor. The dish came with toasted bread and smeared with butter. Pair that with the shrimp butter sauce, chefs kiss. We got more bread (toasted but unbuttered) so we didn't waste a drop of the sauce. The bread was better unbuttered because there was too much butter and it was the first thing you taste. Shrimp and calamari small plate. The shrimp were huge and the calamari were nice and crispy, but whatever sauce they were on top of was delicious. There was a green and yellow sauce, but were didn't see the yellow sauce until the end. The combination was great, I wish we saw it when we first got the dish. The squid ink pasta in a butter sauce with lobster was one of the best squid ink dishes I've ever had!The pasta was cooked perfectly, just a touch Al dente. There were enough pieces of lobster, probably 1/3 of a lobster worth of meat. To cap the meal we got the pork chop and man, it changed my perspective on pork chops. I grew up eating grilled pork chops, which is good but my mother tended to overcook it so it's always be a little dry and tough. This pork chop should be the only was it is cooked. If you blind folded me, I would've thought I was eating a perfectly cooked veal chop. Whatever brine they have it in is liquid gold. The chop was moist, flavorful and melt in your mouth tender. I asked our server how do you guys do it, and they would only share that they brine it but wouldn't share any other details. read more

I really wanted to like this restaurant. The ambiance is relaxing and I loved how they played old school hip hop and R&B in the background. Service was great as well. Unfortunately, the food missed the mark for me. Here's my review on the food: Farro Arancini ($8) Outside was perfectly fried and crispy. I didn't taste much of the black truffle though and I was thrown off by the honey on the outside because it made the arancini sweet. Polpo Alla Griglia ($18) The octopus was grilled well, though there were only a few pieces. The chickpea stew was overly salty and the pairing with the rose harissa was confusing. Casarecce Al Nero ($39) This dish had one flavor profile: SPICE. The spiciness of the chili crisp overpowered everything else so you can't taste the brininess of the squid ink pasta. There were only a few small pieces of lobster too. Pesce All Griglia ($39) Whole grilled branzino that was cooked perfectly. The topping of olives and peperonata added some sweet and sour notes, but I think the fish needed more seasoning. Tiramisu ($12) Best part of the meal. This was on their specials menu. Enjoyed our dinner at bar volpe, the vongole is not your usual one, this vongole tasted very pesto-y, bright and slightly sour. The pasta itself was some of the best I've had in Boston, cooked al-dente. Fritti misi was also delicious, loved the bright green sauce that was served with it. Had a delicious birthday dinner here - they even personalised a menu to say happy birthday for me!! Everything was so good from the unique farro arancini to our pasta dishes. I got the squid ink and lobster pasta and it was soooo delicious and worth the extra money wow. My friends got the ravioli and the fazzolete and they both enjoyed it a lot too. We had reservations for 6 at 7PM on a Thursday and it was pretty packed. Parking is an issue so take a Lyft if you can. The atmosphere is so lovely, with open windows to allow fresh air, weather permitting. we got this nice booth to the left of the restaurant. Bathrooms were clean and nicely decorated. Staff were friendly and knowledgeable. We enjoyed everything. I love branzino and this was cooked perfectly with nice flavors. We decided on the paella and put that order in asap since it takes a while to make. It's a nice spin-off using israeli cous cous rather than rice. I especially loved the gnocchi in caviar sauce and the squid ink pasta. You can't go wrong with the small bites. I did think it was costly to have one piece of crostini for $8. Their squash blossoms were delicious as well as the Farro Arancini. Drinks were not varied but the ones i did try were great. They can make off menu drinks too. I liked my lemon dell'etna and enjoyed the lemon e mente more. for dessert we had the affrogado (not worth it) but the gianduja semifreddo was so good and gone. Lovely place. Bar Volpe honestly didn't wow me. I came here with my girlfriends for my birthday and was not impressed. Located in Southie, Bar Volpe is somewhat hard to get to, unless you take the bus. There's little to no parking, depending when you go, and it's not T accessible. Since I ubered, that wasn't a problem. We started off with some drinks and finally ordered our food. Service was soooo slow. The portions here are also super small. We enjoyed the apps more than the actual entrees. Nothing really wowed me. I think if I didn't wait so long for each dish to come out, I would actually give this a higher rating. Don't think I'll be back. read more

I had heard wonderful things about this new spot in Southie. I had to try it for myself! Im glad I did... they have a very interesting menu. Our waitress explained the entire thing for us and gave a lot of recommendations. We started with the bufalo mozz, burrata, and the rice balls. The rice balls were to die for... everyone should be ordering those to start off. The other apps were good as well. The pasta was good but the portions are very small. They say it's a traditional Italian size but I've been to Italy and 3 pieces of pasta isn't traditional. The cocktails are very interesting. I got an aperol spritz which was good. Some of my friends got the gimlet and didn't love it. Overall, the service was good and the food was tasty but the prices are not reflected in the portions. read more

So excited we were finally able to try Bar Volpe! Last night was a fantastic culinary experience. The location is less than a quarter-mile from her sister restaurant Fox and the knife, which is conveniently located right across from the Broadway Redline stop. So easy to get to. Decor: fun open funky vibe. Neat lighting and tables were a bit close but still lots of room. Food/Drinks: Where to begin! Hubs and I both started with some kind of lemon drink, lol, was really refreshing. For food, you put in your whole order and the kitchen will pace it perfectly for you. We started with the Stracciatella, which was a super crusty crostini with fava beans Moz and peas. So fresh. We also tried the PAnelle which was chickpea fritters, these light, and fluffy fritters were a star of the night! Moving on we tried the Porchetta and the pork was so juicy and flavorful, that we couldn't believe how thinly sliced and succulent this was. Oh, and the pickled fresh veg on the side was nummy! For the pasta, we had chicken marsala and raviolis. Both were seasoned and cooked perfectly but our fave was the smoked eggplant ravioli. The last of the night was the Branzino. Both the hubs and I love fish, and myself being a Wyoming girl, I certainly have had a whole trout fish, usually cooked over a campfire. So I was excited to try Karen's Branzino! It was beautifully presented and deboned table side. The fish was cooked perfectly and seasoned nicely, the topping had a complexity but also the simplicity that added to the fish perfectly. We ended with Gelato which was very good but I let the hubs finish because I was too stuffed! Since this restaurant opened my boyfriend and I have been here 2 times! The first time we walked in on a Friday night and were lucky to snag two seats at the bar. We ordered the bufala mozzarella and artichokes to start, then the pesce alla griglia and casarecce al nero as mains. The best dishes of the night were the mains. The grilled fish came served in individual lettuce wraps that formed the perfect bite. Our favorite dish was the squid ink lobster pasta...we still crave it to this day. The second time we went with friends and ordered the sardinian paella. It took awhile to come out so order it early! It was surprisingly different from a traditional paella since it uses fregola, round dot shaped pasta similar to cous cous. Fun to give it a try! Overall, we had great experiences both times. Went to dinner for two with a reservation at 8:15pm on a Tuesday evening and the place was packed. Super vibrant atmosphere and the aesthetic gives very much mid century modern vibes. I was surprised at how spacious the restaurant was with plently of seating at the bar along with many different sized tables and booths that can accommodate small and larger parties. I would say the volume of voices was a bit loud for my liking (probably because the place was at capacity). It was a little difficult to hear my own conversation so I wouldn't recommend if you're looking for a quiet dinner. Highlights include the IMPECCABLE service, shout-out to a Christopher for being an A+ server. We thoroughly enjoyed your presence and recommendations. Loved all the food - special shout out to the mozzarella bar. If you love cheese, I would recommend the Stracciatella. Not to mention they make their own pasta (you can see where that happens in the center of the restaurant). A great selection of wines and cocktails to pair with the food. Also it was really nice to see that they had a separate menu for vegetarians. It's those attention to details that I think help make a dinner experience inclusive and great for all! We loved the atmosphere here. The restaurant was well-decorated and the staff were all really friendly. An extra nice touch was the amenities in the restroom to freshen up. Love when nice restaurants are thoughtful enough to include that. As far as the food: We started with the Panzerotti, which ended up being our favorite thing of the night; it tasted like a fancy pizza roll. We got the Culurgiones next, and we actually sent it back, we both thought it was pretty bad, to the point of inedible. It was really salty, and had a strange flavor neither of us liked. We asked the waitress what it was, and she told us it was made with "neptitella" which part of the mint family. If this had been listed on the menu, neither of us would have ordered it because we both hate mint. They were kind enough to replace it with the ravioli, which was FAR better. It needed more tomatoes to balance the smokey eggplant flavors, but otherwise, it was good. The Amatriciana was just ok. I thought the Ricotta Gnudi was the best pasta of the night. We finished with the Semifreddo. I don't normally like Semifreddo, but this one was really good. The husk cherries weren't very good and were pretty unnecessary outside of decoration imo. The marshmallow meringue was nice, and I think they're doing themselves a disservice by not mentioning the word "marshmallow" on the menu bc that was definitely a selling point for me when the waitress mentioned it. I wanted to love this place but did not. The ambience is great however the food just wasn't there in my opinion. Aperol Spritz- very heavy on aperol. Faro arancini- found the honey overpowering and that the faro needed more cheese. Burrata- came on a bed of dressed greens with olive oil and vinegar. Burrata needed a hit of salad and a drizzle of olive oil maybe on top. Burrata didn't have much flavor and dressed greens underneath made it all just seem wet. Disappointing. Broccoli Rabe- good. I would have enjoyed more if they prepared it in their wood fire. Bucatini- spicy. Decent but needed some cheese on top. Pasta suck together nothing special. Cooked very Al dente. Sheet noodles with confit duck- best dish of the night. Thin noodles cooked perfectly. Velvety and comforting. Apps came out asap then took 35 min for pasta. I won't go back. read more

Ate at the bar at 8pm on a Friday night. I was immediately offered a drink and when the drink arrived prompted for a snack/app order. Salt cod fritters were fresh and delicious, though did not pair well with my also delicious boulevardier (my mistake). The crispy potato tonnato was cooked well, but I ate it with empty plates from the fritters still in front of me. The bartender recommended the perfect red to go with the lamb ragu orechiette, which was almost perfect but (to me) needed a bit more acid. As someone whose parents lived in Italy for 28 years, I am always skeptical of Italian restaurants in Boston, assuming they follow the unsatisfying example of the multitude of north end restaurants. But, mamma mia, we really had a great experience at Bar Volpe! We had the burrata and polenta bread to start, the orrechiette and the culurgiones for our mains. The food was unusually good, both delicious and visually appealing. The flight of Negroni and the red wine was excellent. The service was attentive, kind and professional. Its only natural to compare BV to Fox & Knife, so I'll get right to it: Volpe is better. The paella, which becomes Italian with the substitution for fregola, was outstanding. It tasted of the sea, but also had a great level of earthy seasoning and spice (maybe from the njuda?). The wonderful part was that the shrimp and the clams were cooked properly to their respective doneness - I hate when places just do it all at once and the clams turn into chewing gum. The squid ink pasta w/ lobster was also hittin', but I honestly think the best bite of the night was possibly the arancini; it was simply perfection. read more
