We are always excited to try new places and stumbled upon Bar Sol at Navy Pier. It took over the spot of Riva Cafe on the lower level. We ate here on July 7 when they had been open for barely a week. I originally thought maybe they were having a bad night and we would come back for a second chance, but the next day realized life is too short for this. It was Thursday evening and we were seated right away. We ordered fairly quickly and our waitress was nice. She and the bus boy came over several times to ask if we needed anything, to which we would say "we just need our food" and smile. Our guac and chips arrived 20 minutes later which my two young kids devoured. We noticed a lot of other people who arrived after us and ordered much later than we did had received their food much quicker. We flagged down a manager who personally checked on the status of the food and basically said they were having a busy night. Our entrees finally arrived 55 minutes after we ordered. Ugh. In the meantime, we killed many spiders and swatted away many bugs. Not my favorite thing to do, but it's understandable for this area when dining outside. Food Recommended (I will also include the reactions of my 3 year old and my 7 year old who are not picky eaters) : * Guacamole and Chips: flavorful and without jalapenos; my kids liked this the most * Pork belly tacos: tasty and the onions are perfect; my kids didn't care for the tacos. Nice presentation. Just OK: * Fish tacos: We were told this would not be spicy at all, but it was. My kids took one bite and no more. Nice presentation. * Burger: standard, nothing special. Nice presentation. We took home some of the food and the next day my kids were eating the bowls of beans.. until my daughter pulled out a long wavy brown hair with her fork. YUCK!!! It clearly was not hair from one of us, but it definitely was a hair. TOTALLY GROSS. I don't know what the rule is about securing hair at restaurants these days, but some of the servers and the even the manager had their hair down and all over the place. Service: At one point I waved at the bus boy for more napkins, and he smiled and waved at me. He must be very new to this kind of job. I had to then gesture for him to come over. We didn't blame the server for our food coming out so slow. We tipped her very generously since we wanted to support this business and felt everything is so new, so everyone is still trying to figure things out. Ambiance: Good music that made us want to dance. The outdoor dining is very welcoming, and it's nice to be out seeing people while enjoying Navy Pier. Overall, though, we won't return anytime soon. Until they figure things out, it's not worth the time and money. Plus I'm disgusted at the thought of my kids eating so many beans that had hair in it all along. read more

After 35 minutes I asked where our food was and the waitress said they lost our ticket and they were making it now. To set the scene I'm a junior in high school and I am in a school trip to national ffa convention. I understood that the bill was gonna be expensive based off of the prices from the menu. I ordered the fish and chips that were placed on the menu and had a 24 next to it which I assumed was the price. The waiter was kind and OFFERED us chips and guacamole. We assumed just by his tone it was complimentary like most places where you visit or at least where I'm from in Nebraska it is. The food wasn't anything to get your hopes up for. The fish while fresh tasted almost chalky and flavor less like I was eating wet bread almost. The sauces left much to be desired with lackluster flavor to them. The fries were barely seasoned with the garlic and Parmesan and might've only been on 6-7 fries total which was disappointing and left me wanting more. I received the bill and was shocked to see that it was 36+ dollars. Like I stated before it was 24 dollars on the menu and I only got water to drink. I'm unaware of the extra 12 dollars that were added to my bill and with that they gave a receipt and a better explanation on much they infused in gratuity and tipping because there was no option for tipping. I understand that prices have gone up and that businesses need to adapt in order to stay afloat but they also need to understand that consumers also work hard for their money and if they want to go out and support a business or a restaurant it needs to be reasonable and not a suprise when the bill comes out and your left thinking was what I got of value to the price that I'm paying. I started to think about it and realized no wonder that at noon there was nobody and they acted suprise when we walked in. Yes, I understand that if you can't afford it don't go there but there were very few options to me in the place that I was at and the time frame in which I had time to eat and depart. I hope that this business looked at this as constructive criticism and talk to thier management about change and how can we change the menu to effectively feed consumers but also ensure that they leave satisfied and like the money they paid was worth the value. I appreciate the occasional refills on water but when they were doing it they had stern faces and I just wish that they were more enthusiastic about having guests. Yes it's work but at least look like you're enjoying it cuz it'll make all the difference to your consumers. Thank you for taking the time for serving us but I do not plan on coming back in the near to indefinite future, again thank you. read more

Moments later a different employee told us that was a lie and they forgot to make his food. Majority of the food was not eaten due to the quality and this was noticed, but rather than offering help, the manger was sent to our table and asked for us to pay our bill. After a lengthy discussion, management was unwillingly to budge or offer anything, not even condolences. It is a shame, with this location it could be a wonderful place. We should have known considering every other restaurant was filled with people and Bar Sol was empty. Lesson learned. read more

Well - all started well sitting on the patio, the view was good but unfortunately that is was about where the meal started to go south. We wanted to order oysters, but we were told they didn't have any and our waiter recommended the mussles (it wasn't listed on the appetizer menu). And we took his recommendation, before the appitizer had arrived the waiter came back an took our orders. There were four of us - one had the salmon he said it was good, one had the red snapper it was average at best and I had the lobster fettuccini - small portion but the food was OK. Our other guest decided to try the mussle dinner, which was advertised to be served over pasta with a red sauce. When the appetizer arrived, it was a sizable pile of mussle shells but the problem was that only two in ten actually included a mussle - mostly it was just shells. In addition, those that did contain a mussle were were small morsels and wasn't worth the work to get to them, so we didn't eat but maybe half of the appetizer - the flavor was OK. But here was the kicker - when the mussle that my co-worker ordered arrived, it was the same as what was recommended as an appetizer. You would have thought the the waiter would have mentioned that he was ordering the same as what was recommended as an appetizer, but he did not - so the meal was not eaten. One of our guests ordered a beer and it came in a bottle. It was simply dropped it off without asking how we were doing and the bottle wasn't opened (it required a bottle opener) and it took 20 minutes for anyone to come back to open it. The lack of checking in was a common theme throughout the meal and I think it was because the waiter knew that the meals were not up to standard. We told the waiter that we were not happy with the mussles appetizer or the mussle meal and since they were barely eaten, we didn't feel we should pay for those two items. He sent a man over who was apparently the manager, not a very friendly customer service kinda guy - he was not going to budge. He said the best he could do because we ordered them was 50% off the mussle appetizer and meal. We shared that was not an acceptable solution - after some discussion, he said that was all will he was going to offer do and he walked away. We all travel quite a bit for business and I can safely say, that is the worst I have been treated at a restaurant ever. I paid the bill, but did not tip because service was so bad. If you are wanting a restaurant with a great view, then Bar Sol is a good choice but if you plan to eat - I would definitly take your business elsewhere. read more

Red snapper on the menu (58 bucks) was supposed to be served on bok choy topped w peanut sauce and toasted coconut w cucumber salad. Got the whole fish - I asked for head and tail to be removed when it came out - and when returned saw that it was an entire fish carcass, overdone, hard skin revealed no real fish underneath, entire fish slathered with some kind of red sauce and shrimp on top (same as our shrimp cocktail app?). What? Could barely slice it or find any flesh beyond a tiny forkful here and there. Then out came a plate with rice and some raw veggies and spinach. Hubs salmon also overdone. This year my salon celebrated 10 Years of successful business! We had our event and celebration at Bar Sol (Navy Pier). To reserve this space, the process was smooth and easy. The space itself Is absolutely amazing and so beautiful! They allowed us to come early to setup and prep for our runway show that we had during our event. They made sure we had water and anything that we needed during the setup process. It was really smoothe! We rented out the entire space on the 2nd floor, which is just so gorgeous! You have a view of the lake and the city with floor to ceiling windows. It was perfect! They recently just performed a small renovation with fresh paint. The event was such a success because the staff was on top of everything and the venue was fully stocked with everything our guests needed. They catered to all of our needs and made sure the lighting was perfect and asked us consistently if any changes needed to be made. I agree with previous persons review that the vibe is off with this restaurant. It starts with the host and continues with our waiter. Both seemed creepy and not welcoming. The waiter came to our table every three minutes to take our order as if trying to rush us. Mind you, the restaurant was empty! There were maybe three other tables with people. The food was acceptable but way over priced. Other than the nice view and beautiful day, it was a one star experience. Mostly because of the male host and server.
