This visit was a much better experience with truly exceptional customer service and a chance to celebrate a new friend's birthday. We sat outside because the place was packed but we're given a heater and blankets which made it a pretty cozy experience. The food was on point this time: the shaved egg yolk was a rich and delicious enhancement to the mushroom puff pastry entrée very note worthy the lemon meringue dessert.
Looking for a place to grab a bite in a cocktail after a long day on the road we found Bar Purlieu. What a great spot! They were busy, and I suspect they always are, so we grabbed two spots at the bar and ordered dinner there. This gave us a great opportunity to watch the bartenders work their craft, and they're very good at it. We had a couple of amazing cocktails, including an espresso martini done with a French twist and we had excellent food. I can heartily recommend the duck confit. The ambience inside is set up to be reminiscent to a local French bistro and they pull it off nicely. Service is timely, friendly, and food is outstanding. I don't know why we don't see more French cuisine on the West Coast, so thanks to these folks for providing such a great option.
Of all the food served, the only dish that was hot was the mussel. As enticing as the menu describes the dishes to be, they show up on the table in a mess and disappointing taste. The breads were brick hard, the meat overcooked, the seasoning missing or overpowering in one component. I am not sure which of these dishes can even be considered french food or fine dining. We were sat outside on the sidewalk as a large party, and quite oftentimes overlooked in service. They had either forgotten our order or the utensils or water.
I did not expect the best steak tartare I've ever had to be from Bar Parlieu. I LOVE this place, but this was a tasting menu gem I will now have to crave for the rest of my life because it isn't on the main menu. Every time in I'm in Eugene I come here because I know what's up. Consider yourself enabled.
I really wanted to love this place. I stopped by a few times before committing. I gave them every chance to impress me. Then I walked in and got a beautiful smile from the hostess. And then she vanished. Poof. Gone. Like she had somewhere better to be. I had to hunt someone down just to get a seat. Whatever. I have been treated worse. I came for one thing. Duck. And when I saw that $50 price tag, I thought, score. Finally, a place that understands my love for fancy bird. What I got was a dried out duck leg that could have passed for jerky. I am not exaggerating. I thought about offering it to my dog. Then I remembered I love my dog. The vegetables were sad. Soggy. Like they had been soaking in a bath all day. It was 6pm, not 10pm. There is no excuse. I did not even bother with the crème brûlée. No way in hell was I going to let them ruin my favorite dessert too. I have boundaries. So here is the thing. Gordon Ramsay is not walking through that door. And apparently, neither is a decent duck in Eugene. I am going to have to figure this one out on my own. Skip it. Or don't. I'm not your mother. Just do not say I did not warn you. A neighbor who believes in you.
Had a birthday dinner. Our waitress was very kind and bubbly. I got a cocktail with rosemary and it was very delightful. The escargot was yum (leaned more buttery than normal if that matters)! We sat outside and watched cars almost get into accidents in the market parking lot across the street, lol.
Short: Definitely disappointed - it's hard to make this review. Thanksgiving and my birthday were supposed to be memorable, but stomach pain made them unforgettable for all the wrong reasons, leaving me deeply disappointed. It wasn't all that. (1.5 stars) I attended a reservation for Thanksgiving and was served their Thanksgiving course which included three courses and a dessert. For an additional cost, it could come with wine pairings. I opted for one glass of wine based on the server's recommendation. Staff & Atmosphere: Firstly, I will say the staff are knowledgeable. The outer appearance gave a fairy forest bohemian feel. Inside, it seemed a bit deeper than outside, but given how busy it was due to the holiday, it felt cramped and almost claustrophobic. It was challenging to hear others and it was generally very loud. I really didn't like this because it did not feel intimate in any way. The food:Thanksgiving 3-course and dessert was $95/person, and it truly left a lot to be desired. I enjoyed the turkey roulade and the first course (both were delicious). The deviled eggs were soft and mouuse like and the turkey roulade was tender and succulent. But other than that, everything else truly was left to be a desired. While I can appreciate the mushroom stuffing as being different, and the vegetables (vegetable vinaigrette/roasted and mashed potatoes) tasted fresh. ((However I didn't appreciate my request not being fully fulfilled and with that I imagine with the servings and plates that were changed and provided, hoping that the kitchen prepared the third course differently.)) With the third course, I believe I got sick. The green bean casserole and bacon Jam taste it off (requested no pork, which includes bacon). At the end of the courses, I requested for a digestive, which was mistaken for a Moscato dessert wine. However, even the strong digestive (also recommended - very strong winter green taste) it couldn't help me so much and I am even writing this as I am in pain with my stomach issues. To note I have fasted for 24 hours after eating here and I've only been drinking electrolytes and peppermint tea. Due to the 2nd course (endive salad - it wasn't anything so spectacular) & 3rd course, while fresh, I expected more out of these courses, better use of spices, innovation, granted that it is a contemporary French bistro. I can say that with what portion of the dessert I ate (Pumpkin cheesecake with Dolce de Leche), it was very delicious, but the crust was very tough and difficult to cut through. Feedback: feedback was provided to Bar Purlieu, in hopes that others who also got sick could receive some reactivity so that this does not happen again. However, I was told that no one else got sick and that I got staph. Then, also wanting to read why it was stated that a lot to be desired for $100 a person. Generally, the quality of product was slacking.
Before visiting Eugene for OCF, I found this place on Yelp and luckily it did not disappoint! After reading an article about the owners and the restaurant, I made a reservation right away. French inspired food with a changing menu, it's best to share dishes. It's casual, yet fancy. Our server, Claire, was helpful and curated all our choices nicely. We started with bread and butter, little gem salad, and some escargots. Bread was okay, needed some sea salt. The salad was phenomenal - fresh, crisp - loved the pistachio streusel! My partner tried escargot for the first time and went back for more. They were the best I've ever had! Grilled zucchini with walnut butter & blue cheese dressing was an excellent combination! I would order again. Seared scallops were a little small, but seared well! I liked the dish, but I wouldn't order again if still the tomato sauce. The stars of the show were definitely the mussels and the mushroom tart! Wow!! I was hesitant on the mussels, but mixed with the green coconut curry and tomatoes, it was perfect to us. The cream sauce on the tart makes you want to lick the plate! I could eat that for breakfast or dinner. I could also drink a gallon of the Barbera red wine. The Bird of Prey drink was delicious, slightly reminiscent of Dr. Pepper. For dessert, we had the pistachio pie with chocolate ganache - absolutely divine! We noticed the couple next to us get a slice earlier, and I will say not all slices seemed created equal - as ours was a sliver in comparison - but we didn't need more in the end anyways. I was pretty bummed their espresso maker was down, because that would have been the perfect ending to a phenomenal meal. Claire did try to make up for it with a tasty pour over. Overall, fantastic! 10/10 would recommend you eat here. Side note: Our table was right next to the window and under a ledge where they keep all the plates and silverware - so staff kept coming right above us - I can't say I loved that table.
OVERVIEW: A cozy, intimate neighborhood spot serving up seasonal menu items with unique flavors and fresh farm-to-table ingredients. A little of everything, this is a great spot for dinner! Service is casual and reservations aren't required. Overall, we really enjoyed everything we ordered. 4-4.5/5! FOOD RATINGS: - Bread and butter (3/5): Fresh and cute but basic and a bit pricy for the portion. - Beets and pistachios (5/5): Earthy and yummy. The pistachio cream was a bit thicker than we expected - almost like peanut butter - but it was good. - Garden side salad (4/5): Fresh and citrusy. A great side for any dish! - Scallops (4/5): Opted for the small portion which is 3 scallops (5 in the large). Tasty and perfectly seared/cooked. The plate is small for the price but worth it. - Chai spice carrot cake (3.5/5): This was more like a bread slice than cake. The chai spice carrot cake was great, but the goat cheese icing was too sour. Needed more sweetness to balance it out. The candied carrot chip on top was unique.
A gem!! The Staff has the best vibe -- incredible service. Super cute atmosphere and the food is spectacular!
I have been dining here for a long time. The tasting menu tonight was truly transcendent. The beef carpaccio was life changing good. I know this is the best it will ever be. It's rare to have every course of a tasting menu be really fantastic and Bar Purlieu blew my mind.
Amazing! I didn't post a picture of my entree, because I ate the black cod so quickly. The space is small so you will hear your neighbors entire conversation, but the food is worth it. The service is spectacular. I highly recommend a reservation.
This place was such a nice surprise while we were in Eugene. The service was extremely attentive, friendly, and knowledgeable. The floral arrangements were also beautiful. Our server recommended the inlet oysters to us and they were melt in your mouth creamy - some of our favorite oysters ever. The pork belly and octopus also paired together so nicely. We will definitely be coming back here the next time we are in Eugene.
Warm and inviting French restaurant in downtown Eugene. We came Friday night of Homecoming weekend and were able to dine at the bar. ( Reservations highly recommended) Our bartender/server was outgoing and vivacious. Helped us with the menu choices. We had the Puget Sound oysters, escargot, duck confit and a beef special on the menu. We no longer drink however the drinks looked fantastic. Definitely appears high level mixology taking place. I give this place a solid 4.2 stars read more

Cozy wine bar and dinner spot in Eugene in an old house featuring excellent local wines by the glass and a French inspired menu. Favorites from our visit included escargot in garlic butter and a side order of bread and butter to sop up the remainder. A delicious mushroom tart entree smothered in a cream sauce and scallop entree with risotto were the mains. Low key, intimate, and a good service experience overall. One snafu was a side order that didn't appear with our mains, and wait-staff had to be reminded it was missing, but they made it right by serving the dish late and comping us for the late dish due to their error, which was the right thing to do. All in all, a fun and enjoyable night out! read more

Tonight we had a most wonderful dining experience as we feasted on Chef's Choice at Bar Purlieu. The regular menu here is fabulous. The five course Chef''s Choice goes further with a magical world class culinary experience. This great Eugene hotspot deserves more than five stars. From appetizers to desert all is superb. With great service, wonderful cocktails and wine along with a genius chef you can't beat this intimate restaurant for something very special. read more

This restaurant that features an amazing craft cocktail bar has an amazing atmosphere and beautiful decor and is often times back to the brim with excited diners. service was great, food came out fast, The presentation of all the dishes was nice. we paid $34 for a large portion of octopus, which consists of two smallish octopus tentacles and a handful of fingerling potatoes underneath. The octopus was overcooked and rubbery and was lacking in portion size. for $34, you can easily get a whole octopus and prepare it at home correctly. octopus is a temperamental dish to prepare and requires a lot of skill so it's not that big of a deal that they were not able to prepare it correctly but for the price and the portion size it brings down their rating quite a bit. we also had a dozen oysters of different varieties, some of which, although the name escaped me, the smallest sized ones and the largest size ones were both underwhelming. although I think it's the hognose or hog island, the medium-sized ones were delicious, very sweet, and I would definitely get those again. this does not really affect the score because oysters are not necessarily something they can control the flavor profile of. The strawberry mignette was great. The mushroom tart was delicious and definitely a go-to. It was said to have a shaved cured egg on top, but I did not notice any flavor or visual notes of the shaved cured egg The olive oil cake was honestly a little disappointing in both presentation and portion size. what looks like basically a sheet pan cake cut up into little squares and drizzled with some kind of sauce and some flowers on a cutting board I think kind of lacks creativity and inspiration on plating. The flavors were fine. Nothing stood out. Nothing I would get again or think about in the future. especially with two people sharing a dessert which is common at any restaurant it's a bit underwhelming to have not only an odd number of small squares but seven pieces of cake I'm paying basically a dollar per piece of cake or more I forget exactly how much it cost, what I can go over to sweet Life patisserie and get a large slice of cake that is miles above in terms of quality and portion size. They also lack any kind of after dinner espresso or affogato, which is not taking away points but is kind of disappointing for an upscale attempt at fine dining. overall, I think with the lack of dining options with Eugene, this place does stand out and provide a medium, high-quality dining experience for the price. I would not get the octopus again or dessert, but I would definitely stop in for a drink and a mushroom tart before heading to my actual event or or as a light snack before an outing. there wasn't too much stand out on this menu that really invokes creativity or attempts to carve any kind of path and food culture. a tad derivative but also missing the classics. bartenders are highly skilled, although I did order a very, very hard, shaken martini and was given a mildly shaken martini that did not really meet my expectations. when I order a heart shaking martini I expect fractured ice floating on top it's a particular style and oftentimes the bartenders do fall short on being able to shake a shake her hard enough to achieve this, so it's not a big deal but I do try to order very hard shake and martinis and it's a bit disappointing to see a gentle shake. especially when we're talking about 12 to $14 drinks. overall, I wasn't very blown away, but I think with the lack of options in Eugene, this place does set itself above the rest but only because there's a lack of competition. if they brought prices down or increased portion sizes, I think they could be ranked higher. especially with octopus being overcooked such a fine dining price point it's a tad underwhelming and disappointing. but that's kind of the food scene in Eugene right now anyway. read more

This place is awesome. Every bite (and sip) I had was delicious. The plates are all mostly meant to be shared--my date and I split bread and butter, each got a small green salad, split some scallops, and got grilled ling cod and chicken schnitzel for our main courses. I also had one of the cocktails (the VCR) and a wine flight, which is three small tastes of wine. All the ingredients seem high-quality and the vegetables are all bright and fresh. This French-inspired spot really honors the traditions of French cooking by letting the ingredients shine, and uses local, in-season ingredients, which means a rotating menu. I always appreciate when a place puts as much work into their alcoholic cocktails as into their nonalcoholic ones--Bar Purlieu definitely does. I'd describe this spot as "Eugene fancy"--it's a fun place to get dressed up for a date, the napkins are linen, the cocktails are fancy, but it's also comfortable and unpretentious, and you can wear anything from heels to Birkenstocks. The staff was very friendly and attentive, and our server seemed genuinely delighted to help me pick some wine to try. If you're looking for a place for a special meal or a celebratory dinner, I'd recommend this spot. read more
Ok, so I have had amazing food here, and some not so amazing food here. I'm graciously giving it four stars because I do really enjoy my experience at this restaurant. Two times I have visited I have had an overcooked and under seasoned steak frites. One time when a steak was a special, it was impeccably made, and I crave that experience again. It was definitely the best steak in town in my mind after that experience. This last time, the steak was really firm, ate like New York strip, not a filet. A filet generally should melt in your mouth. I asked for roasted veggies, not frites with my steak, and they sent me almost inedibly salty sautéed veggies. The steak was under seasoned, so it actually worked in my favor there lol. The server did offer to replace, but I didn't feel it necessary, just offered the feedback. The flavors otherwise on the rest of the meal and the quality was just fine. There were highlights, but nothing was exceptional this last visit. The mushroom tart is definitely a go to for us. That's the best dish, just get it! The ambiance is beautiful. The service is really nice. This visit we ordered the tasting menu and a few other things. We ordered the wine pairing for the tasting. The wine didn't come with the food, which was a little off putting. But the selection was great! I really like this place and am being super critical here only because we drop $200+ every visit and would really like to have that perfect meal experience every visit. read more
I loved this restaurant! It's definitely a more sophisticated place, food was very creative and everything was delicious. Our server was so nice as well! I came with my grandparents who are worried about Covid and wanted to sit outside. They put heat lamps out there for us and we're very accommodating. I loved the kale Caesar and fried Brussel sprouts. If you're going to order a dessert the chocolate mousse was great too! This place would be great for a special occasion like a birthday or anniversary, would recommend. read more

If I could give this place 10 stars i would!! My husband and my in-laws came here tonight and had the most incredible dinner. The portions are perfect, and flavors are f*cking phenomenal. Worth every penny. The service was exceptional as well (I believe our server's name was Abby, and she was truly awesome! ...It was very loud in the restaurant- that was the only drawback). Everything was beyond perfect-otherwise. Oh! Desserts were otherworldly. We will be back again soon. Great job Bar Purlieu team!! From the first interaction at the door, I knew this was a gem! Beautiful, warm and genuine service (both front of house and back of house.) Excellent start with Cecily (apologies if I spelled your name incorrectly) gave top notch service at the bar. The North Bay oysters were lovely and briny as promised, well paired with the Alsatian white wine. I chose the scallops, which were perfectly done (seriously, I almost cried) I had to stop myself from licking the plate. I wish I had more room for the mushroom tart or the lamb, or even the steak frites...but I was full. The chocolate tart with dulce de leche and Maldon sea salt was the perfect ending. I should have had some dessert wine or cocktail but, alas, I did not. I'll be back and I'll be bringing many others. Thank you for making it a lovely experience. read more

My wife and I decided to eat here for a date night after seeing the Chefs Tasting Dinner on the menu. It was a new experience for us and we were excited to try something new. Quick note, this meal is gonna run you around $150, before drinks. Plan accordingly but it was worth it. When we made our reservation I was able to email about my dietary restrictions and they were very responsive and assured me that they would have a great menu for me, a dairy free, egg free pescatarian. When we arrived I was surprised on how many tables they packed into a small location. It's a little cramped in what could really be an intimate setting, but it was decorated nicely and the lighting provided great ambiance. The dinner was amazing, 5 courses that were dishes we've never had before. Course #1 - sardines on a bed of cream cheese with First course of chefs tasting menu - sardines on a bed of cream cheese with cucumber, spicy peppers and an oil drizzle. For my version the chef replaced the cream cheese with a pesto that was herbaceous and zesty, super good. This was sooooo good! Even my wife who doesn't like this dish. Course #2 - Pork Belly with roasted vegetables and a parsnip puree. My dish was a fall medley of roasted vegetables and a parsnip puree. My wife loved her pork belly and the vegetables were cooked to an al dente that I didn't expect but really liked it. Course #3 - panzanella salad with goat cheese, walnuts & persimmon. My version didn't have the cheese. This wasn't my wife's favorite but she ate it, I enjoyed the new experience. Course #4 - perfectly cooked smoked octopus tentacle with butternut puree and wilted spinach. This.....this was amazing. Perfect texture, amazing smoky flavor, perfect. It was my first time eating octopus and I can't wait to eat it again. My wife doesn't like seafood so she was not impressed so I ate both portions. It was SO. DAMN. GOOD. Course #5 - dessert. My wife had a lemon cake soaked in an amazing sauce and I had a fruit & nut plate that tied my dinner together well. We were very impressed that they put together a meal that we both were eating mostly the same dishes. That's rare for us and we appreciated it a lot. We would definitely eat here again, just making sure we made sure my wife had a land based menu while mine was seafood based. Otherwise, this was a great meal and made a great date night. read more

I was pretty bummed that their steak fries were unavailable. I ordered their large seared sea scallops based on the bartender's recommendations. The dish contains fiddlehead fern, nettle pistou, lardon, spring onion, and crème fraîche. I ordered it without the spring onions, the scallops were succulent and delicious. According to the bartender, small comes with 2 or 3 scallops and large comes with 4 or 5 depending on the scallop size. read more

Great place for a special occasion. I used to come her more often but with the latest inflation, the prices here have also sky-rocketed and it's at the upper range of what I like to spend on a nice evening dinner. The food was good, as usual. What I noticed was that the portions have shrunk immensely despite the prices going up. Any way, the food: we had a Foie Gras "appetizer". This came in a small jar, cute presentation, with a layer of oil on the top. It made the foie gras too runny when mixed. The flavor was delicious and spot on. The toasted brioche slices were from my favorite local bakery, but it was toasted a bit too much so the burned flavor was strong. Next, the Sausage special: one sausage home made with pork and chicken(?) , very good flavor. It came with a creamy risotto and some tiny bits of shaved Oregon truffles. Flavors were spot on! Of course, one sausage and a scoop of risotto for $21 does not last very long. Also: lamb chop. We opted for a small cut for $23 and indeed it was tiny small. Probably a little less then 2 ounces of meat after taking away the bone and grizzle. Not very tasty, a bit tough too. It came with a delicious blend of farro and mint sauce. We shared a dessert next: Orange Crème Brûlée with a Meyer Lemon marmalade. The flavor and texture were excellent. I tried a Cosmonaut cocktail to go with all this, hmmmm, don't know about that one, quite strong Elderflower taste with citrus and served room-temperature. Service was great and attentive today. The ambiance is lively, a bit too much so. Tables are spaced closed together and it was extremely difficult to hear my husband across our tiny table when a louder group was seated behInd us. They are very busy and I was glad we had reservations. read more

Intimate setting with ample seating and outdoor heated tents/tables. I'd recommend a reservation. Personable, professional staff with delicious cocktails. Despite its small size, they are efficient and produce a high-quality product. Shareable appetizers, seafood options, fresh oyster specials, and a 5 course chefs menu option. The best curated cocktails I've had in Eugene hands down. Scheduled another reservation while I was there, needless to say - excited to go back. read more
One of our favorite spots for a nice meal and drink! Tonight we had Duck Confit and the poutine. Our drinks were masterfully done by Molly. She is always the best! She makes great drinks, has an awesome personality, and takes great care of us! My wife and I love the atmosphere of the restaurant, whether we are at the bar or at a table. Side note: In the past we had the Tuna Tartar here and it was probably the best thing we have ever had in Eugene. If you see it on the menu, buy it! read more
Interesting and unusual combinations of food. I was simply stunned by how good the food was. The food is just a five star, no question. I had the sea bass and my daughter had the scallops. My daughter ordered the small plate of scallops. She would definitely order the large plate in the future, it was so amazingly good. We started with a fresh garden salad that was unusually fresh and flavorful. Cocktails were unusual and creative, I had one of the Parlieu and one of the Birds of Prey, and she had one of each as well. We had the strawberry crème brûlée with rhubarb compote. Delicious! We paired it with a Hungarian dessert wine which was sublime. While I will come back to this restaurant, I won't sit outside because the patio seating is too loud, right next to the street, and positioned such that pedestrians have to weave through the tables. I'll reserve an inside booth next time - it looks great. read more

This is one of my favorite restaurants in Eugene! I've been here quite a few times now and the food is always phenomenal and the service is very consistent. On our last visit, we started with a variety of different types of oysters. All were super fresh and tasted amazing. For the main course we had the Duck Confit and the Pan Seared Sea Bass. My fave of the two was the Duck Confit. The duck was cooked to perfection and the cherry demi-glaze added phenomenal flavor. I also liked how they plated the butternut squash and grapes, added such a cute aesthetic to the plate. I will say my only complaint was that I wanted more! I went to dinner starving and felt the duck wasn't filling enough so I also order the Steak Frites. The Steak Frites was also cooked to perfection. Super tender, extremely juicy, and I enjoy the compound butter they place on top. Such an amazing meal! For dessert we ended with the Fried Puff Pastry. It's such a light dessert and the mixture of sweet and tart between the raspberries and lemon curd is such a nice way to end the night. Especially, after such a heavy meal. Definitely recommend for your next night out! read more

My husband and I had our anniversary dinner here, which we noted on the reservation, and it was never mentioned. That's fine, but why even ask? For dinner we shared a salad, the catalon, and the duck confit special. The catalon was tiny and so was the duck confit. The catalon was delicious, but the duck was overly salted. We would have possibly let the server know, but the only time she checked in on us was to passive aggressively say "you can use the shell plate" while we were eating the catalon before she quickly turned around and left. I ordered an espresso martini and it was the worst I've ever had- no foam at all and a disappointing flavor. My husband ordered a drink and we both enjoyed it- pretty sure it was the brown fedora! Ambience was nice! But we left hungry. Didn't enjoy the service. It was disappointing. read more

Is the heated patio dog friendly?
Do you need a reservation for Happy Hour?
You do not ever need a reservation!! We always save room for walk-ins at anytime. Happy hour there is always room.
Thinking of coming for my 50th birthday on tuesday....could we do a gluten free option if we do chef meal. But would like more simple things like steak, and cheese plate...could we do that?
Chefs menu is purely chefs choice based on the current menu offering. I am sure they would accommodate your request to the best of their ability. Keep in mind the kitchen is very small and surface and product separation would be difficult.
Do you always offer oysters?
Hello! We try to!! On the very rare occasion, usually do to weather, our supplier can run too low to send directly to restaurants. And sometimes we have a night where we sell in a day what we sell in a week, but this has happened just a handful of…
Do they accommodate gluten allergies?
Absolutely! We had an amazing meal from start to finish that was definitely safe and they were gracious about my husband's questions to keep me feeling well during and after the delicious spread.
Are there many vegetarian options? How are they?
Yes! their cauliflower is to die for. They usually have a couple/few options on hand. Everything is excellent.
