Bee-bop and Fly Me To The Moon
    Gabe D.

Went here for dinner after a day shopping in SoHo. Came in around 8:30PM, party of 2 seated immediately. Bar Moga has a very intimate and jazz bar-y vibe with dim lighting and a beautiful bar stocked with a bunch of different Japanese whiskeys. Our server was very accommodating but the food took a little more time than normal to come out. We ordered two drinks: the Bee-bop ($21) and the Fly Me To The Moon ($23). These drinks were very very good. Unique flavor combinations while still being balanced. The two dishes we got were the Omurice and the Katsu Sando; my favorite was the Omurice. Overall, good food and good drinks with a dim-lit atmosphere perfect for date night!

I loved the vibe of the bar! Very retro Japanese and the drinks are tasty. All were around $20. Noise level was low enough to have conversation, which makes for a great cozy atmosphere for a girls night or a date.

Bar Moga was aptly described to me as a great cocktail bar that also happens to have pretty good food. Half the space is dedicated to their bar so seating is limited and reservations recommended. On the night we went, it seemed to be a popular date spot but also a good spot for small groups of 4 or less. The service was friendly and attentive. One of our party was a vegetarian, and there were enough things on the menu to choose from. He described the vegetarian ramen as one of the best he's had. I had a sip of the broth and it was truly flavorful and outstanding. I would totally get it for the flavor profile and noodles alone. We also got the potato salad, garlic omurice, katsu sandos, and shaved ice dessert. Aside from the rice being a little on the hard side, everything was just outstanding. I'd get everything again when I come back but then want to try everything else on the menu which means I just need to come with a bigger appetite.

Dress Up For the Night. $19. Excellent matcha and coffee gin cocktail with a light sweetness from white chocolate

I went to this pricey but pretty tasty place a while ago as per many of my recent reviews. Bar Moga has some of the dishes you'd associate with Western Japanese/Yoshoku spots but the prices are notably higher and they have more unique options. The prices go along with their very interesting drink menu consisting of some very fancy Japanese whiskey flights, unique cocktails, and some seasonal cocktails. Otherwise the food is expensive and good in some cases and overpriced but tasty in other cases. The atmosphere is nice and the restaurant feels for lack of a better term classy. To drink, I had the Dress Up For the Night for $19 made with Nikka coffee gin, lime, Sorate matcha superior, white cacao, pink peppercorn, and tonic. I believe they might have used Kettl matcha back then as Sorate wasn't open yet but I'm not sure. Anyway, this was a tasty drink with a bit of sweetness in the front likely from the cacao and gin, some bitterness and earthiness presumably from the matcha, and it ended with a slight bite from the pink peppercorn. Nice mix of complex flavors and certainly worth it for $19 and I would recommend it. We had a bunch of appetizers to begin with. Cheapest but still tasty was the Kani Cream Croquette which comes with two pieces for $14 with snow crab, mushroom, and tartar sauce. The croquette had a lighter batter than most which I didn't mind as I could taste more easily the crab and mushroom but it did make it more dainty. The tartar sauce is almost not needed as the batter was light but still appreciated and otherwise there was a lemon and some greens. I would recommend this. The other cheaper appetizer was the Uni Arancini also with two pieces for $16 with snow crab, bechamel, cremini mushroom, saffron rice, uni mayo, smoked gouda, and tomato sauce. Said arancini were tiny but packed with uni. However, the flavor was lost a bit due to the other rich flavors from the sauces and other accompaniments. For the price point, it's good, but I preferred the croquettes. We also had the Hamachi Carpaccio for $26 with yellowtail, uni, garlic confit, yuzu vinaigrette, and truffle. The yellowtail was good quality with the uni flavor being much lighter while the vinaigrette had a subtle sourness. The garlic confit was unnecessary however and the truffle was basically not noticeable and was likely just to increase the price point. This was good but overly thought out and I probably would not get it again based on flavor and price. The Omu Rice for $26 with an omelette, chicken rice, and veal based demi-glace sauce was different but tasty. The demiglace, which is my preference over the other sauce which tends to be ketchup or something similar, had a stronger black pepper flavor then I'm used to but it worked and it was nice and rich with a little bit of subtle sweetness but not too much. The egg texture was also excellent and better than most spots I've been to. I would say the weakest part was the rice itself where I really couldn't taste the chicken nor was there that much of it and it was a bit bland with a very light garlic flavor. This was still tasty with faults but I would recommend it. The Katsu Sando for $26 with sakura pork, hatcho miso sauce, lime karashi mayo, and Japanese milk bread was good. It was cut into three thick pieces with pretty tender pork and a mix of sweet and sour sauces likely used to mimic the more common tonkatsu and kewpie sauce combo found on said sandwich/sando. For the price point, I prefer the katsu sando at J's Kitchen in the East Village as the pork is actually better there and you get a much bigger sandwich but it was good. The Kogashi Duck Roast for $32 with double cooked duck, Brussel sprouts, and double charred soy sauce was tasty. The duck was tender though it could have been a bit crispier and the Brussel sprouts were nicely roasted with a bit of char for added flavor. The sauce was rich and tasty though perhaps tad salty and I can imagine others finding it a bit too salty. The last dish was the Gyutan Curry for $48 with a 78 house blend spice curry sauce and simmered beef tongue. This was easily the biggest of the dishes and easily the most expensive Japanese curry I've ever had but for a group, it's probably worth it. I could name probably only a handful of the spices that were used and a couple of us tried guessing a bunch of the spices that were in there while we were eating this. The beef tongue was very tender and the rice and vegetables helped soak up the very rich and complex sauce. I kind of wish there was an option to top the Omu Rice with this sauce instead for a few bucks more as a fancy take on curry rice. The food here is good but there's probably a bit too many faults for me to give it 4 stars. There were too many dishes that were just fine and the fact that my favorite dish was $48 and it would be barely enough to fill up one person doesn't help much. 3.3 (would be a 4.2 for drinks alone.)

The Moga, New York Henge, Sailor's Song Mule, and Fly Me To The Moon.

We stopped by here for some drinks with friends on a Monday night. It's got a dive bar feel from the dark wood, but with a Japanese flair from their cocktails to food. We had a few cocktails between our group with The Moga ($19), New York Henge ($23), Fly Me To The Moon ($23), and Sailor's Song Mule ($20). The moga is a twist on an Old Fashioned while the NY Henge was a mix of that and a light, fruity flavor. The sailor cocktail was recommended when I asked for something with ginger, which was good. Overall, nothing that really stood out to me, but solid drinks. Unfortunately, we weren't able to try their food since their kitchen closes at 9:45pm.

Amazing Japanese bar and restaurant. The food and drinks were so good! I had the me diary cocktail. I didn't get much earl grey but I did enjoy it. Two of our group had mock tails and enjoyed them. For food we had the croquette, Wagyu toast, potato salad, omu rice, duck, and katsu sando. I didn't have any of the croquette or katsu sando. Apparently those were hot, fresh, and really good. The potato salad was yummy but nothing to rave about. The omu rice was really impressive and tasted so good. This was my favorite. The Wagyu toast was tiny but I love the flavors. The shiso went really well with the beef and added some spice. The duck sauce was delicious but the duck was chewy and the fat wasn't rendered properly. The Brussel sprouts were delicious. For dessert we had all three. The panna cotta was the best panna cotta I've had. The texture was incredible and the dessert wasn't too sweet. The pudding with yamazaki 12 was boozy and so good. It was a creative dessert I would definitely order again. The tiramisu hojicha shaved ice was a beautiful texture and not too sweet. All this food was enough for four people. The service was quick and friendly and the restaurant wasn't too loud. I loved the decor as well. Would highly recommend!

I went to Bar Moga on a date and we both ordered two cocktails. It was a busy Wednesday night. I saw couples on dates and I saw friends hanging out. The atmosphere was incredible. The service at Bar Moga was fantastic. The waiter noticed my purse on the ground and he picked it up and placed it on the empty chair next to me. I would definitely want to come back to Bar Moga and try more of their Japanese comfort dishes. 10/10 sophisticated bar recommendation Food: We ordered the Hamachi Carpaccio and the golden Uni Pan.

I came here for drinks and was so happy! We didn't have a reservation so I didn't expect to get in on a Saturday night but we somehow managed to get two bar seats! The bar tender was incredible - he was attentive and provided recommendations on drinks to get. The cocktails are very unique! There are a ton of ingredients that I really don't know what they mean, but all very good! The ambience is amazing for a date night! I want to come back to try the food

Their omurice was perfectly executed with the most velvety eggs. Rice a bit on the dry side. The Katsu sando was a bit tendon-y and I wish they trimmed it a bit more, but the mustardy sauce was a great balance to the porky flavor. Really great ambiance and seems to be a very popular date spot! Service also excellent.

    New York Henge
    Timothy T.

Review is for drinks only. Stopped by for a couple of drinks. Ordered the New York Henge as my first drink. I initially thought it was going to hit closer to an old fashioned but it was quite light and refreshing. The smell of bourbon was strong but the taste was lighter as it had lemon and green apple. I also ordered The Moga, which is their take on an old fashioned. I thought this was also a little lighter on the old fashioned side. The presentation of the drinks were very detailed and somewhat special depending on the drink. Service was quick but we felt a bit rushed at times. Kind of felt like the waiters were rushing us out.

    Garlic Omurice
    Vishnu G.

This was a great option for dinner and drinks. I tried the vegetable ramen and garlic omurice. The ramen was definitely like nothing else I've had before - a creamy broth, strong notes of black pepper and parmesan, and textural contrast between the soft noodles and crispy vegetables on top. It was a really cool fusion between Japanese and Italian flavors. The omurice was also great. The egg was pillowy, and the rice underneath had nice scallion and garlic flavor, with some pleasant smokiness. The house made ketchup on top added a little bit of tartness that the dish needed. I also had the fly me to the moon to drink. It was a subtle accompaniment to the rest of the dishes, with notes of tea, herbs, and spices, all milk-clarified. This was an expensive meal at about $72 per person after tax and tip, but well worth it for the creative dishes and drinks.

    Signature Omu Rice

Bar Moga is a divey and nostalgic Japanese restaurant/cocktail bar in Greenwich Village. We came here for the signature omurice, but I was more impressed by the mocktail. My friend described this spot giving Haruki Murakami novel vibes, which I totally agreed. If you are looking for a place for a romantic date night, Bar Moga will surely impress your date. *Potato Salad It is more like a one-person serving with the small portion. The potato salad was blended with mashed potato, carrots and onions. The mustard dressing has a sweet honey taste. We liked the crispy lotus garnished on top. *Gokden Uni Pan A tiny and delicate piece of uni shokupan, topped with hokkaido uni. Not a big fan of uni, but this was not fishy at all. Very buttery and creamy. *Omu Rice** We opted for the classic chicken omurice with chicken. Our server cut open the omelette for us, and gently pour the hot demi-glaze sauce over the egg. The omelette was cooked to perfection -- runny, fluffy and soft. So delectable with the tasty fried rice and veal sauce. *Amber Sky (zero proof cocktail)** Flavor notes: Lyre's Italian spritz, orange, grapefruit, lemon, rose, honey and aquafaba. As a non-alcoholic girlie, I've tried quite many mocktails. This is by far the most satisfying one I've ever had. The rosy flavor shines, and I liked the fruity combo of orange and grapefruit. It was nicely crafted with a foamy texture. ***Get mentally prepared their food portion is VERY SMALL for the steep price you're paying.

Came here on a date on a weekday. He made a reservation for us a few days ahead of time. It was pretty busy when we arrived despite it being a weekday but it cleared out while we dined. The place feels like a wealthy person's basement level bar/entertainment/living room space. There was a room in the back past the bar with a display fireplace on the back wall and no windows in the room. Though sadly none of the physical warmth to match the feeling of warmth the space evokes. They have signature and seasonal drinks that looked interesting. My date got a signature drink and I got a seasonal one. I mainly was interested in their food since I'd heard good things about it. We ordered the most popular items here based on what we heard and reviews we read. Food 4/5 Uni toast - the uni had a bit of a seafood taste and some bite to it. The bread they use seems to be toasted and slightly pressed. It was a little dense for the thickness of it and chewy- I love this kind of bread (I grew up eating it). It was the right thickness to go with the uni. 4.8/5 Katsu sando - my date and I sat here trying to figure out what the sauce was made of. It was so good! Our favorite of the night. The sandwich has a clean look with the edges trimmed and it is cut into 6 bite size sandwiches. the meat is a little fatty so some parts are chewy. I thought the bread was a little thin compared to how much meat there is. I struggled to get the right ratio of meat to bread in each bite. Would have been nice if the bread was a little thicker to balance out the meat. The flavor is great though. 4/5 Omurice - the egg unravels so easily once sliced through the middle. There's a strong black pepper taste to the rice, it's sharper than other places I've had omurice. My date said this is the best omurice he's had. I thought the flavor was a little strong and would have preferred a little more egg to balance it out. Dessert 5/5 Purin a la Mode - this was sooo good. This is a flan with a small scoop of ice cream on top. There's some alcohol in the sauce which you actually can taste. The bitterness of the alcohol complements the creaminess and sweetness of the flan. Lovely end to the meal! Drinks 3/5 Princess Mononoke - a little spicy. They put a decent amount of whole peppercorns in here! I accidentally bit one at the end of the drink and ruined the entire aftertaste for myself. 2.5/5 Bee-Bop - there was a waxy taste/feeling to the drink that made it a little unsavory. Kinda like it wasn't supposed to be in the drink lol. the presentation is wonderful though. We liked the visual of the edible decoration which actually also had a waxy feel to it. Overall, great food just as we expected. Drinks were okay. I love the ambiance of the space for drinks only- especially if I were sitting at the bar. But the drinks left much to be desired. Not sure if I'd give their drinks a second try. Staff was very pleasant and super polite, asking to remove items each time and pardoning their reach. Definitely make a reservation if you want to give this spot a try!

Our friends raved about this place and we of course were excited (and a bit skeptical at first) to try it. The concept: no menu + no lights + a few questions = the ultimate cocktail experience. The speakeasy vibe and the dark ambiance really makes this place feel even more exclusive. With just a few tables and the bar setting, you're in for an experience you won't forget (unless you answer the wrong questions and really end up with a drink you don't like HA). This wasn't my case. Of course I described my two favorite things: Negroni + mezcal. The obvious answer would be a mezcal Negroni, but that's not why one comes to a place like Attaboy. Our amazing curator came by to ask us all a few questions, write down a few words in the napkins, and mix up the perfect drink that our master bartender crafts, curates and creates. My drink came as I couldn't possibly imagine. It looked like a Negroni smelled like Oaxaca, with all the smoke simmering up and preparing my sensory experience, leading to the best first sip. Ladies and gentleman, I introduce you to The Devil's Backbone. A perfectly balanced drink I'll never forget, one that is sipped slowly and enjoyed thoroughly. It's sexy, it's smoky it's sipped. Attaboy gave the best mixology experience and we can't wait to be back. Pro tip: be sure to be as vocal as possible, even with ice, so you don't end up with a tiki drink if that's not your vibe.

I only said I wanted something "floral" and I got the best water lily drink curated for me - never had anything like it. Others in my group asked for "something spicy", "something smoky, nutty, and creamy" and something "refreshing". We were all extremely impressed. Our bartender was Steven and he was awesome! He even chatted with us for a bit after to tell us more about attaboy. I'm rounding up to 5 stars but I will say our experience with the "bouncer" was a bit unpleasant. He called us to let us know our table was ready but we missed the call (our fault). We returned the call immediately and got there within a couple minutes anyway. We were ready to patiently wait for the next availability but were met with some attitude and unnecessary comments from him during the waiting experience. Regardless, we had a great time inside to make up for this. Highly recommend, but just be sure to make a reservation or be on alert and on time when getting off the waitlist.

Tucked into the Financial District, this spot blends old New York history with some of the best cocktails in the city--and it's easy to see why it's been named "World's Best Bar" more than once. The name itself has a wild backstory, inspired by a notorious 19th-century Irish-American gang from Five Points. It adds a layer of character to the place, but what really keeps people coming back is the atmosphere and the drinks. The space is split into two levels: a two lively, sawdust-floored Taprooms downstairs and a more refined Parlor upstairs if you're in the mood for a quieter, cocktail-focused experience. Drinks are the real highlight here. The Irish Coffee is widely considered one of the best in the world--rich, smooth, and perfectly balanced with whiskey, coffee, and fresh cream. They also get creative with variations like a frozen version and even an Irish Coffee martini. If you want something different, the "Act Naturally" is a standout, mixing Irish whiskey with Guinness and fig in a way that works. Food is just as impressive for a bar. The lobster deviled eggs (topped with caviar) are a must-try, and the menu leans into elevated comfort food. Overall, The Dead Rabbit nails the balance between historic charm and modern cocktail excellence. The D.R. is one of those places that is never boring and consistently delivers.

I could tell you to look for the blue beaker sign that says "Chemist" but the better tell is the random guy sitting on a stool outside. He'll be the only person on the street, so no worries about missing him! The menu has changed over the years, but the quality has not. The bartenders are social and personable. And the prices are in line for the area. My bestie and I loved the vibe. One of the best speakeasies she's had the pleasure of experiencing. Don't miss out on this place!

I wanted to treat an old friend to a quick birthday toast before a show she was attending nearby. Later that night, another friend became available to join but, because they do not actually have a phone that takes calls (only offers an announcement to go to Resy or email) adding another person was not at all easy. I would have had to cancel and rebook and wasn't sure I'd be able to (reservation was for a Saturday night) In most places, a table for 3 easily accommodates 4. But not here. When two of us arrived, they made it clear this was a big problem. I would have walked out right then but I would have been charged $90! We decided to stay and make the best of it, which was a challenge. For a speakeasy, the vibe was aggressive, not relaxing. Very loud music and not great acoustics.) Too cramped to be comfortable, proving that small does not necessarily mean cozy! We asked if we could take a chair from the table next to us, which was empty (it was only 6 pm; I told our server we'd be gone by 7 because my friend, the birthday girl, had to catch a show.) We were told No! To say the waiter was cold, unfriendly, and indifferent is generous. He was totally rude. He literally told my friend she couldn't sit in a chair that was otherwise empty, knowing we'd be leaving momentarily. Then he had the gail to hand me the bill with a 22% tip pre-selected...and watched over me while I signed it! Definitely the least satisfying $100 I have ever spent. Disappointing. It was good to see my friends, but I so wish I hadn't picked this place. Never again.
