Also compared it with a few other changfen/rice roll places in Richmond and we still loved this one the most, especially at this price point ($7.50 cad with egg added) The changfen isn't in very distinct strips because it hasn't had time to cool down and take shape, but I didn't mind. There was a decent selection and we ordered the following: Steamed sponge cake 蒸鬆糕 Wife cake 老婆餅 Coconut tart 椰撻 Brown sugar walnut bread 紅糖核桃包 Prices are standard but the baked goods were average. The walnut bread was very dry. There was a small surprise though. I noticed several items are Taishan pastries packed in plastic boxes. Those are difficult to come across especially with modernization. We did not have the capacity to try those and it would be difficult to bring back to the US. If we ever revisit, I would love to give those a try.

Wish they had more fillings though. Be forewarned they have a lot of air, lol. But I know it's a high inflation environment. They also have plenty of bread options. They even have cakes. I tried the Black Forest Butter Cake and it was good, creamy and fluffy and would have gone well with coffee. I was satisfied! The place is clean. It's inside the mall. They take cash only unfortunately. So have to make sure you have cash with you.

They put a big piece of coloured plastic (black and red) to surround the 8" durian cake that I…read moreordered and they taped the plastic which made it difficult to remove it (usually the bakeries put a small transparent plastic to surround the cake without the tape because it is easier to remove it this way). Also, the coloured plastic was unnecessary for the kind of cake that I ordered (usually it is used to stabilize the mousse cake but mine is a cream cake). The coloured plastic made the cake look ugly, and it gave them an excuse to put less cream and decoration for the cake. Everything was tasteless - the cream (powder taste), the durian meat (weak taste mixed with cream), the sponge cake (minimal egg taste), and the fruits on top of the cake (they did not have the clear sugar glaze for the fruits; they tasted bitter and the kiwi still had bits of skin on - it was gross). The cake was nasty because the flavour of the ingredients was minimal and it was not sweet. It deterred you from finishing it. In addition, there was a small piece of debris (brown shell) in the cake; it was scary. They did a poor job for the cake (it was just big and heavy - quantity over quality); it was very disappointing. In terms of the service, the staff asked me to pay some deposit when I ordered the cake at the store. It was unusual for bakeries to ask customers for deposit because usually customers pay when they pick up the cake (e.g. when you order the cake by phone then you pay when you pick it up). When I went there to pick up the cake, the staff did not greet me, look at me, or talk to me at all; she just took my receipt and retrieved the cake. She did not even say 'thank you' and she looked annoyed. The staff should be happy to get the whole cakes for customers because the whole cakes are the most expensive item in the store and they are celebratory. The fact that she just taped one small candle with the plastic knife on the box without asking was unprofessional. Cakes are about happy occasions. But their cake made me feel terrible after eating it. They charged me $80 for the cake. It was not even worth half the price with the service. P.S. The bakeries always have a catalogue of cakes for customers because the store would not have all kinds of cakes available in the fridge. Then the staff would explain to customers of their design capabilities. That is service. The fact that the bakeries do not provide a catalogue to customers and just give customers a price list instead means they want to limit the choices for customers by just showing the customers the cakes in the fridge. That means they do not want customers to be happy. If the staff do not want to sell to customers, that means they do not want business.

I finally visited this bakery after seeing them at so many markets. The cafe has an even bigger…read moreselection of baked goods than they bring to the markets (including hot curry pan), a coffee/tea bar, and on Saturday, sandwiches. Non-dairy milk (oat or soy) is offered for drinks, but vegan options are limited to bread rolls/loaves and the croquette bun. There's also a little retail area with tea and some crafts. The shop is nothing fancy but it's cute and unpretentious, and clean. As you might expect from a Japanese establishment, the staff is super polite. I got a veggie curry pan ($6), a slice of mont blanc tart ($8.25, it was a big slice), and a black sesame latte ($5.5). Again, I really enjoyed everything. The curry pan is almost like a curry-filled donut with its airy texture. The panko coating gave the outside a nice crunch. I found there was a good amount of the filling but not too much, so it wasn't spilling out. It tasted so fresh. I don't think I've tried something like this before and it was very memorable! The mont blanc tart was also delicious, just the right amount of rich and not too sweet. The black sesame latte used coarser-ground black sesame than other black sesame lattes I've tried. I got it unsweetened so I got to enjoy the straightforward nutty black sesame flavour. The bakery is a little out of the way for me but even so maybe I'll go back since it was a fun place to visit. If not, I'll definitely keep an eye out for them at more markets!

I don't really care about the small nuances in taste, texture, etc, etc... I'm basically in and out. I get what I want and I leave. First impressions. Family run and it's basic. I received with a box of assorted pastries, a box of wife cakes, and $30 in gift cards. This is my honest review of my visit and I wasn't required to post a review. When I came into the store, the staff were confused about what I was trying to pick up at first, but it was quickly resolved when the manager came to the front counter and I explained to her that I was one of the contest winners. The queue was short because not many customers was inside at the time so I was in and out pretty quickly. The store area was spacious and there were quite a lot of pastries on display. The pastries i received were beautifully boxed. They could definitely be presented as gifts to loved ones or work colleagues. The box was gold and red, with a golden foiled design on the lid and a gold string ribbon to keep the lid closed. The pastries themselves were gorgeous. Just looking at them made my mouth water. They were soft and crumbly to the touch. The buns of the pastry were buttery and the outer layer was very flaky with every bite. Some of the pastry buns had sesame seeds sprinkled on the top. They were all baked perfectly. The inside fillings were quite sweet but no overly sweet. There was no indication on the box on what kind of pastries they were so im not totally sure what kind of pastries i received. Some had a sweet tasting filling with an egg yolk or a century egg center, just red bean paste, or just some other type of sweet filling. I shared the pastries with my family over afternoon green tea and they were a hit! My family loved them. The wife cakes I received were very soft, tasted delicious, and sweet but not as sweet as the assorted pastries. They were filled with winter melon filling, i believe. They were also made a great pairing when they were served with tea. They were all individually wrapped with plastic wrap which helped keep them fresh. The boxed was also nicely designed with gold and red colors. My family really liked them. Overall, i think Kam Do bakery is one of the best Chinese bakeries in Richmond. Gotta give them 5 stars for their absolutely delicious pastries.

Pineapple Bun: I really wanted to get the Bo Lo Yo, but apparently, this location of Kam Do doesn't offer it, so I settled for a regular Pineapple Bun. Not doing this with butter is such a shame though because for a not super fresh pineapple bun, THIS WAS INCREDIBLE. Fluffy and not dry at all in the center. Thick cookie crust was the perfect level of sweet. If this was fresh, I think I would have died on the spot.
