Overall, quite a decent spot for Viet food outside the hustle and bustle of the busy Chinatown southwest scene. 1) All the rice crepes (banh cuon) I tried were well made. Those not aware, the bean sprout mix they used are traditional and are cooked so it will not possess the crunch and might not be as appealing to those who are used to the fresh cold crunchy variety. Only issue is that portion of their "dac biet" is about 88% of a full portion, needing a bit of an increase in rice crepes and protein. I like the crispy fried shrimp and yam, breaking up the monotony and adding different texture to the mix. 2) Broken rice dish also similar issue with portion amount but marinated flavors are good. The fish sauce concoction designated for each type of dish were flavorful but needed more spicier thai chiils. Again egg cake, shredded pork and charbroiled pork is lacking the quantity needed to fill the belly. 3) Banh Beo. Individual rice cake servings topped with cooked dried shrimps and scallion oil, complete with fish sauce and dipping sauce. This appetizer was shared at our table and was a welcome addition as the topping was popping with flavor when paired with a splash of fish sauce. Consistency of the rice flour was steamed to perfection. Service was good and food came out in about 10 mins. I found they also do caterings of the rice crepes by the pound! Would do this again, perhaps adding a portion of extra meat or do an appetizer to make sure I leave satisfied. I expected the best viet food to be primarily in Bellaire, so I lowered my expectations a bit for this spot. This spot exceeded my expectations and is as authentic and just as good as every other restaurant in Bellaire. The banh cuon dac biet was absolutely delicious! The thin silky sheets were noticeably fresh and had the perfect bouncy consistency. Initially thought that it could use more protein, but the nem chua and cha lua made it pretty filling; I actually wish they gave more of the nem chua. The banh tom added a nice contrast to the dish as well. Didn't think the dish needed the plethora of bean sprouts, but maybe that's just personal preference. Bear in mind, the bean sprouts are cooked which I'm accustomed to, but may not be usual for those who enjoy the crunch of bean sprouts. Each time we've come, there seem to be few customers eating here, though they have plenty of tables and chairs to host large groups. The menu is in English and Vietnamese, so ordering should be straightforward. The last time I ate here, I had their beef over rice, which comes with a fried egg, vegetables on the side, and a small bowl of soup. Everything was perfectly seasoned and flavored. The beef was marinated with fish sauce, but it was balanced. I can see myself eating this dish day in and out if I lived in Houston! However, I usually get their pho with brisket and meatballs. The pho broth is consistently tasty, and they put a lot of meat in each bowl. The service and timing was just fine, our server was very friendly although she did not speak much English. Exceeded my expectations. I'm biased to thinking best and freshest Vietnamese food is only found on Bellaire. The service was fast and the food was just out of the kitchen of mom's house. My favorite was their freshly ground/cut peppers for the dipping sauce. Be CAREFUL! Freshly ground/cut also means high spice levels. First time and will be last time here. Arrived around lunchtime, place was somewhat crowded, lots of dirty tabes, and several tables available. Super slow service, horrible customer service, and wrong food brought out. When we arrived, we headed to sit at one of the empty middle section that has 3-4 connected tables. Some patrons were already seated at one end and eating. The waitress came over and said we couldn't sit there, said something about saving it for larger parties. So we asked where we could sit, she pointed to a table right next to the door- I told her, we don't want to sit by the door, it is cold outside with it constantly opening. So she looks around and tells us to go wait by one of the dirty tables. So, we go stand by the dirty table and wait for the one single guy that's taking 10 minutes cleaning each table. After standing awhile, we sit down and the guy starts coming over with his cart, taking the dirty bowls. While clearing our table, he takes 3 trips to the back kitchen, grabbing random items like the cleaner, the rag- no idea why he doesn't have those items on his cleaning cart?! As he's wiping our table, he asks if anyone's taken our order, we said no and he said he can help us. We told him our order and he goes to the back before he finishes cleaning our table. He then reappeared and slowly took his cart to clear another dirty table. Few minutes later, another girl arrived and asked us for our order again, saying the guy that took our order is new and doesn't know Vietnamese much, so they had no idea what order he took for us. After telling her our order, we ended up getting the incorrect order. I got a dry chewy Hu Tieu Nam Vang and got a beef soup with sate sauce. Asked her if my they brought me the right order, she said Yes and walked away. Didn't ask how it was wrong or if I wanted to get something else. When I say this I am talking about the pre bowled Pho noodles that you will find to separate in a clump at the bottom of your soup to the semi bland tofu special they had on the dry eraser board. It seems that the specialty here are the steamed rice dishes with pork and other ingredients (Banh cuon nhan thit). The service started out not so good but really picked up at the end. It was like someone poked the pig on the butt and it woke up so I don't have any quelms about that, in fact it even got better than most Asian places. Parking at lunch rush is a little tough so get there before the rush. The bánh cuon here is excellent. I normally don't like bánh cuon because it never fills me up and it has a lot of refined carbs (main ingredients are rice flour and tapioca flour), but I can make the exception here. An important part of the dish is the steamed rice batter, similar to how tortillas are important to tacos or burritos. The steamed rice batter has just the right taste and texture. Unlike some of the other places I tried, it's not slimy and it is noticely fresh. The combination of bean sprouts, lettuce (?), and mint leaves makes this dish a perfect light meal. (Note that the bean sprouts are cooked. Some people may think it's old because cooked bean sprout loses it's rigidity and crispiness. This is normal.) With that said though, the chicken rice plate is just sub-par. It comes with pickled veggies, soup, a huge mound of rice, egg cake, and a small amount of thinly cut grilled chicken. The amount of chicken is suitable for a kindergartener. If you are in the mood for a chicken rice plate, I highly recommend going to Pho 579 (which is just down the street) because the portion of chicken is bigger and more tender for almost the same price. As for sides/appetizers, the spring rolls ($3) are good but the peanut sauce can use some refinement. I find that the sauce is too thin and incomplete. The egg rolls are just ok. Very crispy but lacks in taste. The service here was excellent. Our food came out quickly and our water cups were always filled. What a great discovery. I have been on the prowl for banh cuon for awhile now only to find that they have a restaurant that specializes in it. The interior is pretty standard in terms of Vietnamese noodle houses - long benches, soup spoons, chopsticks and condiments on the caddy. The menu is actually pretty extensive from the printed menu to the specials they have written on the dry erase board. There's quite a few dishes you don't see at other Vietnamese noodle houses, which is always exciting. Besides banh cuon, they also offer a similar dish, banh uot which is rice sheets with goodies piled on top. The main attraction here is the banh cuon. In general if you visit a Vietnamese restaurant with the name of the dish in the title, that should be the first thing you should try! I ordered the combination with ground pork, grilled pork, and shrimp. Yum! Pass on the shrimp. It's those tiny dried up ones. They weren't bad per say, but the other two were much tastier. Dip those light rolled sheets of delicate noodles in the fish sauce, and you'll be wowed. It's a nice simple and clean taste. As if this treat couldn't get better, the banh cuon also came with a few slices of regular and spicy pork roll as well as a cold mung bean salad and fried sweet potatoes. Definitely a nice bonus! I came in and tried this dish at eight thirty five at night... The waiter looked a bit annoyed and it affected his service, but I swear I am not one of those inconsiderate customers that stays past closing time. I left promptly at nine. The second time I visited I ordered the banh mam, which is like a fish stew noodle soup. It came with a nice arrangement of veggie add-ins. I was expecting something a bit more fishy, and the plentiful catfish pieces were fishy... maybe in not a good way, but the broth itself was not, but instead deep and a bit spicy, soaking into the bits of chewy pork, shrimp, eggplant, and vermicelli noodles. My dining companion ordered the mi quang. It was another winner! The flat yellow noodles were fun to slurp up, and the slices of pork roll, shrimp, and giant sesame rice crackers made this a gorgeous and tasty dish. Both soups were full of flavor, though there was a film of orange fat that clung to the spoons. But I didn't mind too much. You know where the flavor is coming from. On my last visit I ordered the bun rieu. It was just okay and a bit bland. It didn't have the great marriage of flavors I enjoy in this dish. It wasn't served with shrimp paste. Side items here are available such as pork rolls, quiche, meal balls, and even fried rice. We ordered the tau hu ky - tofu wrapped over shrimp paste as our appetizer. They were very nice and crisp, though they brought out and charged us for two servings even though I specifically and clearly asked for one serving. I didn't realize we had two servings because it was my first time ordering it, and it was all brought out on the same plate. I only discovered it was two servings when I got up and paid and was charged double. I will probably be back again even though the service leaves a bit to be desired, and charging someone for something they didn't order is a bit sketchy. Will have to pay extra close attention next time. Unfortunately the service really affected the stars I gave them despite having some really incredibly delicious food. *update* On my last visit they didn't have something that was listed on the menu and they brought out something that I didn't order. I really dislike to give a restaurant a 1 one star review but what happened here to me should of been called in to the health department!!! This was my fourth visit. I sat down and wanted water. The same waiter that has waited on me previously said they had no water. I know that was a lie because I had water before. So I ordered their weak ice tea. I received what seemed to be an extra thick yam with one shrimp fried on it BUT ON THE BOTTOM OF THE YAM THERE WERE ABOUT 7 SHRIMP TAILS FRIED TOGETHER. SOMEONE ELSE HAD OBVIOUSLY EATEN THE WHOLE SHRIMP AND LEFT THE TAILS. These tail remnants had BEEN FRIED TOGETHER ON THE BOTTOM OF MY YAM!!! This is the original Banh Cuon Hoa location on Veterans Memorial. They are closed on sundays. When I walked in, the restaurant was kept pretty clean. It wasn't very crowded so the waitress approached us right away. As an appetizer, we ordered the Banh Beo because they were out of Banh Bot Loc. Banh Beo is in the small round plates. It wasn't bad, the flour was a little too much and too thick, but we finished the whole thing I ordered the Banh Cuon Dac Biet which is a mixture of everything: shrimp, ground pork, bbq pork. I come here pretty frequently whenever I crave for Banh Cuon and it's like down the street from my house. At first I just stuck w/ their specialty, Banh Cuon Dac Biet. It's pretty good! You get a combination of Shrimp Banh Cuon & Beef Banh Cuon, with Pork Ham, Sour Pork & fried shrimp cake. It was really good & you can tell they hand make the Banh Cuon everyday and is fresh. best way to describe their service: CHEAP the service was abysmal. if you want a drink beyond water, don't expect much because they'll give you too much ice and 3/4 of the cup filled of drink. We had a large party and most our drinks were an embarrassing amount, or they didn't have it in stock at all. they might not have ran out of water, but they might as well because they didn't supply enough water at our table and when we asked for more, they still didn't give us enough. they were also missing a lot of the items in the menu as well. They have a lot of disposable things which is really bad for the environment, but i had to use them because the spoons and forks they supplied looked dirty. they did not check on us once and it looked like they cheap out on a lot of stuff too so i won't be surprised if they cheap out on cleaning too. if cleanliness isn't your main concern, the food is pretty good but Bellaire has better food if you're willing to travel. read more

This wasn't my first time coming here but I haven't visited in a while. Since the last time I've been her they have downgraded by so much. We ordered our drinks and some of us had drinks other than water. The drinks came and we got multiple cups that had an overload of ice and not even filled to the top drink! We paid $4 for many drinks that was half filled! When getting spoons and forks for our meal, they had stains on them and did not look sanitary so we stuck to the chopsticks. Our service was not the best and had to ask multiply times for extra water or napkins for them to finally bring it to us. This only thing that makes this a two star is their food.
