Was staying at the Sheraton and looking for something to eat. Have never tried Malaysian food so decided to give it a try. I had recently gotten a foot canal so I was wanting to eat something soft. I got the fried eggplant and the Malaysian fried rice. The fried rice has a bit of a kick to it and they don't really ask how many stars, it's just kind of the set recipe. Of all the amazing restaurants we had the privilege of experiencing in YVR, this was the one that took me by surprise the most. We ordered the mussels in a very Thai-inspired broth and it turned out to be quite good. But the one dish that deserves special mention is the black cod (sablefish) that we paired with a side of jasmine rice. Most of the seafood we've had on our trip has been very good but the freshness and flavor of this piece of fish was noteworthy. They served a near perfect pan-seared steak in a light Malaysian broth with broccoli and green peppers that were just enough crunchy to complement the creaminess of the fish. Haven't been here for a long time, finally had the chance to swing by and left stuffed like a turkey. The ribs were tender and packed a punch of flavour. Loved this place - - I don't usually visit the same place twice when traveling, but my wife demanded we return. The first night we got the turmeric, coconut, spinach, and curry meat, the second time around we got the chicken and vegetables and the lamb. Walked by this place while staying in a hotel not too far off Davie street. Our server was great, really knew the menu and the area well. There were seven of us and I think half of us got the 7 course lunch sampler. You can't beat this special for the price and variety of food you get. The salads, roti and satay came out right away. I have never had roti before but others that have said it was the best they'd ever had. Our server almost on queue came out and asked if we wanted me roti sauce just as we ran out. The satay was done well, juicy and the seasoning and marinade were delicious. The remaining four courses were phenomenal, a meat dish and fish dish and then dessert. The fish was amazing, none of us could get enough! The marinade was a sweat sesame style and the fish was cooked well, tasted very fresh. Our server checked on us throughout of our filling our water and we had some great conversations with him throughout our meal. If we're back in the area for another trip in the future we will definitely be back for lunch. read more

On my last evening in Vancouver, I had my GPS coordinates set on Banana Leaf, a Malaysian restaurant, as the destination for dinner. The main reason for choosing this eatery was that it serves tasting menus and I was eyeing the top offering: the chef's 12-course degustation menu for the evening. There are 4 locations, and we visited the Davie branch because it was the closest to our hotel. Let the games begin. We were informed that the appetizers would come first, and once we were done with them, the main dishes would appear. First came out an Asian salad with pineapple & papaya and tom yum soup with mushrooms & prawns. Then crispy shrimp wontons and nyonya crispy calamari (unfortunately not crisp). This was immediately followed by satay lamb skewers and roti canai. After most of this was consumed, came the main dishes. Singapore chili lobster tails, caramelized ginger fish fillet and rendang beef curry. Also a vegetable dish containing sambal okra, eggplants & green beans and pineapple seafood chicken fried rice. For dessert it was pisang goreng (fried bananas) with vanilla ice cream. I have to admit that all the dishes were well prepared. One better than the other. The salad with pineapple was succulent and refreshing (however, I did not taste any papaya), while the Tom yum soup had a unique tomato base which was a first. Lamb satay was superb, shrimp wontons plump, beef rendang tender with dense flavor, fish tasty and the fried rice, with well balanced taste and textures. However, the major disappointment of the evening was the lobster tails. They were fried with batter to a crisp, difficult to bite into, and hardly had any meat. When asked how the dinner was going, I brought the matter up with one of the servers. She lacked empathy and was curt, stating that they only use small lobster tails. I told her that was fine, but there should be at least some meat on the tail. It is my feeling that this item should be removed from the high end presentation, if it cannot live up to its description. This restaurant brand also serves alternatives : a 7- course and 10-course tasting menus. Finally, if they had patience and brought out the dishes one by one, it would provide a better, relaxed, distinct and more memorable dining experience. read more

Just be wary when ordering the noodle soups; serving size is huge! I came in ravenous and was able to finish it, but on a normal day I would have definitely saved the other half for home. With so many choices on Davie St we decided to try Banana Leaf for some Malaysian food. We were seated at the window and our waitress was friendly and attentive. We had crispy spring rolls that were very hot and tasty. No mint, but maybe that's normal here. Then we followed that with a scallop curry and pineapple fried rice. I like that the curry came with a lot of fresh vegetables, such as peppers and green beans. The pineapple fried rice was presented in a hollowed out half pineapple, which was quite impressive. It was a huge serving as well. I like that there were pumpkin seeds and seafood in the rice. We had an enjoyable dinner with good service, and all in all it was a good experience. This used to be my favourite restaurant. It has gone down hill. I had Kung Pao Chicken yesterday and Mango Chili Prawns. Both were over cooked and it was way too salty. Great spot! The service was excellent--the server and food runner were both friendly and efficient. I got a cocktail (dark and stormy) and it was super tasty. My partner doesn't drink alcohol and appreciated the large selection of mocktails (got a passionfruit mango mocktail.) This was my first time having Malaysian food, so I can't compare it to anything, but I thought the food was great. We split an appetizer sampler for dinner (it was enough for two people who wanted a light meal.) It came with a small papaya & pineapple green salad, veggie spring rolls, calamari, satay skewers, and roti canai. All of it was really good. I wish the salad portion was bigger, (next time I would probably just order a full serving of the salad plus a couple of other things instead of the sampler.) We have always been fans of Banana Leaf. We love their affordable prices and their delicious Malaysian cuisine. Our favorite is the Rendang Beef, a beef stew in spicy coconut gravy, which goes very well with Roti Canai bread! They have also started doing Happy Hour as well! It's Monday to Sunday 3pm to 6pm, but they also have late night happy hour too. Their happy hour menu has great deals on wine and food. Be sure to try their Vegetarian Spring Roll and Nyonya Tofu Lettuce Wrap! A note about their decor: the place has a Asian-fusion decor but it probably needs a little bit of freshen up. read more

Came by for happy hour on a Friday afternoon, around 4:30, and I'm so glad we did! Happy hour is offered everyday 3-6 pm as well as 8:30 pm till close Sunday to Thursday. The hh menu includes both drink and food options. There's a small outdoor patio in addition to the indoor seating, but we opted for indoors as there was construction going on outside. It wasn't crowded at all, so it was easy to get a table far from the other diners. For my drink, I went with the daily special cocktail, the mango margarita ($8), and it didn't disappoint. I love that there was actual mango slush in the drink! They have some great drink specials such as half off all bottles of wine on Thursdays, and lychee mojitos on Saturdays. Definitely take advantage of it! Neither of us were super hungry, so we opted to share the English Bay Sunset Box ($20), which includes calamari, roti canai, Asian salad, and chicken satay.We also ordered wings from their hh menu for $8. The food was all delicious! The calamari was chewy with a nice crunch on the outside, and the roti canai with the curry dip was so good! The wings weren't spicy at all (thank goodness for my taste buds) and were fried perfectly. My only complaint was that the peanut sauce that accompanied the chicket satay was a little too sweet for my personal tastes. I would've preferred something on the saltier side. Luckily, these cravings are easily fulfilled the next afternoon...if only all dreams and desire fit so warm and snugly into a bowl. If you have never had Laksa before, this soup is a coconut base; spiced with Lemongrass, Garlic and Turmeric and Chilies. Oh, how I miss Malaysian food. Disclaimer: my parents are from Malaysia, and my relatives who live there make it a point to stuff me as full of food as humanly possible every time I visit. I got the nasi lemak, my favorite food of all time and the national dish of Malaysia. And let me tell you, it was ON POINT. The sambal was nicely spicy with perfect fishy essence. Ikan bilis and rendang were fantastic; so rich and hearty. The shrimp and fish curry were a nice touch as well, both very good. And the cherry on top was fried calamari rings with a savory sweet sauce! And best of all, the coconut rice had just enough pandan flavor and wasn't too heavy or sticky--perfect! Flavors were authentic. The only gripes I have is that I wish there was a whole hard boiled egg--they only gave half. But I digress. But I also noticed the food doesn't taste as good as the Kitsilano location or Oak Street location. Service was good. It was not busy when we went. The roti Canai is always my favorite dish. It was lacking at this location. The curry sauce tasted very different compared to the Kits location. It was less flavorful here. I was craving laksa soup and fried rice and my goodness, I found an amazing place to have those. As u see the photo, the noodle soup came with separate bowl (noodle + topping and soup). The flavour of the soup was sooo amazing. I find banana leaf food flavour is upscale(luxury) flavour on top of the good flavour. There was a lot of topping with noodle. Seafood fried rice had lots of seafood and pineapple pieces My one concern was the soup portion was little smaller than the portion they serve noodle+topping. Also, pineapple fried rice was a bit oily. (But very flavourful). I would like to try it in the restaurant to be more precise. All in all, I had a good meal. read more

Banana Leaf has been around for years though this is my first visit to this outlet. I usually go to the other outlets. I tried the Nasi campur which is an awesome way to try the various dishes. Most of the dishes were on point with some that could be better. Roti canai was crispy and fluffy, simply delicious with the curry dip given. The chicken satay was ok (not the same as in Malaysia/Singapore) but great with the peanut sauce. I would say the satay was more like what you get in Indonesia. What caught me by surprise was the gulai. It was so good. Creamy curry and flavorful. It was not as spicy as what you would get in Asia but the level of heat was perfect for me. Spring roll and eggplant fries were also nice. The Assam curry and beef rendang were ok. The beef could be more tender though. I also tried the pulot hitam (black glutinous rice) which was gorgeous. So good with the coconut cream. I will be back when I crave some singapore/Malaysia food. read more

Environment This was off Davie, in a nice part of the city. The interior looks nice. A number of tables, fits a party of 4 easily. I've been to all of their other locations in the past. The Davie one seemed smaller, darker, and in a need of a make over. I was here once previously and it wasn't great. As a matter of fact, it was so bad that they ended up comping our entire meal - drinks and all. However I do believe in giving second chances. I am glad I did. Instead of going with a fixed menu, we chose individual items to share. We started with cocktails. The frozen mango peach Bellini and the Lychee mojito. Both excellent. In fact they have so many delicious frozen cocktails to chose from, it took a bit to decide. For food we shared the roti,chicken skewers, the curry beef and the coconut rice. All so excellent, it's now what I order when I come here! I have also had the chicken lettuce wraps, which are ok ! They have daily specials, and the last visit was on a Sunday. The quantity is really big, so I would caution before ordering. Service was excellent, with the staff being nice, and sometimes tries to make you laugh. We asked our hotel concierge about a good Asian restaurant in Vancouver and Banana Leaf was recommended among the many, many choices in the area. We were not sure what Malaysian was compared to other regions, but we found familiar items that we were interested in ordering. Nice comfortable ambiance with an upscale feel. Note, I did not see any indication about a "bribe for a good review" at this restaurant as others have mentioned but being a serious Yelper I could never consider or approve of such an offer. We ordered the Roti and it was delicious with the slightly spicy dipping sauce. If it had come out earlier than our entrees we would have filled up on this. Since prices were a little steep, I selected the special of the evening Kung Pao chicken. It was delicious, packed with peppers, peanuts, perfectly cooked chicken in a sweet and spicy sauce. My husband ordered mango prawns and enjoyed the prawns but felt the mango was not ripe enough. We were surprised that entrees do not come with rice so you have to separate. If we would have realized the size of the rice portion, we would have just ordered one to share. The server suggested the coconut rice for me and this was served in a banana leaf. We came back here a few nights later to get only dessert - I was really craving sticky rice with mango. Their sticky rice is not like what is served in the US. it was pretty thick and SUPER sticky and chewy. I enjoyed it, even though it was different from the usual! We also ordered the fried banana sundae AND the durian with black rice tapioca (yes, we're fatties). The durian flavor was not AS pungent as usual, I think bc it came out frozen. Although next time I think I would pass on the black rice tapioca... it was a little too soupy and the texture of the rice not that appealing to me. We still ate a majority of it though ;) read more
