I hadn't been to Banana Leaf (Original) on Broadway in over ten years, so I decided it was time to give it another try. I'm happy to report the food has improved -- my taste buds were dancing with the flavors and textures. The mussels were fantastic and easily one of the top dishes; I couldn't stop scooping up the sauce with whatever I could find. The green beans were crispy and fragrantly stir-fried. The Singapore laksa was creamy with a pleasant heat. The only miss for me was the roti canai -- it wasn't as flaky as I prefer. Service was good and will likely be returning. No parking on Broadway due to the SkyTrain expansion. Seeking side street for metered or free parking and expect to walk a few block. read more

It had been awhile since I went to Banana Leaf on W Broadway. I specifically decided to go here because i was craving their roti canai which is a flaky soft flat bread that comes with a curry on the side and it is the most delicious thing. I would highly recommend it! For drinks I got their fresh young coconut water which came in an actual coconut and had coconut meat inside. The coconut water was so sweet and refreshing. The coconut meat was very hard to eat and peel off but it was pretty good. We also tried their passionfruit mango mocktail which was pretty good, not too sweet. In food, I would say their assam curry tofu was the highlight. It had a tamrind flavour and was not too spicy but the right amount. It paired very well with their coconut rice. For dessert I had to get their mango sticky rice, it never disappoints. I'll be back here soon! read more

My friend came from Japan for a visit, and she wanted to meet me for lunch at Banana Leaf since we had had a really good memory from our previous visit. The restaurant was filled with greenery, giving a vibe of Mother Nature enveloping you. After having a difficult time choosing just one dish from the extensive menu, I opted for the solo adventure platter to try a little bit of everything. All the components on the platter, except roti canai, were tasty. Roti canai, on the other hand, was cold and not flaky. I was surprised because Banana Leaf had never failed to put out warm, flaky roti canai before. Thankfully, my friend really liked her Hainanese chicken and mango papaya salad. It came with wide range of food for three people we had we could get to try 7 dishes and every single one of them are very tasty. We had originally planned to try John 3:16 on Broadway but for whatever reason they are closed today. So we ended up here at Banana Leaf. I haven't been to a BF for a significant amount time and probably for good reasons just at the moment I didn't recall why. We were greeted by a robust humourless man. No small talk, asked us how many, I replied 2 and the people behind us are not with us. The man frowned with disdain. Okee. He must be the manager or owner with such sour demeanour. Then he went away for a long time. The people came after us have already ordered and nearly finished before our food even arrived. FYI, the restaurant just opened so cannot blame the "crowd" for lack of service considering there are only 5ish tables. We ordered 3 dishes; beef rengdang, a rice dish with fried chicken and a seafood curry. First of all the portions are all on the small side. The beef rengdang was superdry. Sign of excess overcooking or reheating. 1/5. The curry seafood contained 2 prawns, 2 scallops, 6 mussels with 2 empty shells so 4, some squid and fish, but majority was fillers comprised of string beans and carrots. 1/5 Finally the lasi nemak, the rice dish is the only passable dish. Steam rice with some dried fish and a few pieces of fried chicken. It was not spectacularly tasty or difficult to make. 3/5 Overall foodwise it was lacklustre, bland and water down comparing to authentic Malaysian cuisine. So the restaurant is so unassuming but yet so charming and cute. It is full of plants and creates a calming atmosphere. Now the food is AMAZING!! We had chicken satay as an appetizer and the peanut sauce was one of the best. For dinner we shared the ginger garlic rice. I could eat just that so flavorful and perfect. We have loved Banana Leaf and have used it for business lunches, working at the hospital, it's always a bit pricey but the food is always top notch. However, after covid, the prices have gotten so much higher and the quality has gone down. When we order a basic shrimp and noodle dish for $25 dollars, that fits in a super small take out box, I expect it to be perfect. And the last couple of times it has not. The shrimp are never cleaned of the poo and they are usually small and over cooked. I'm sad to give this review because we love this place, but we may start to look for other places with similar food and cheaper prices. Went here for the 4th time in the past few nights, and it 2as awesome. We've tried over half the menu and every dish is fantastic. Although, I was a little disappointed with the size and flavour of the Otak Otak Fish. It was smaller than I had seen when others order it. But it's the service that won us over. Regine was professional and polite, accommodating and helpful. Joanna is simply awesome. She's the perfect server; polite and professional, but is also a lot of fun if that is the vibe you give off. The owner always stops by to thank you for your business. We love this place and can't wait to go back. PS. My wife surprised me with a cake to celebrate an achievement, but when they brought it out they sang Happy Birthday. This place hasn't changed over the years and I'm glad it hasn't. I came here with a friend for their lunch menu and was pleasantly surprised that we were in time for happy hour too! The lunch menu is everyday from 11:30 am to 2pm. We ordered the Mee Goreng $16 (egg noodle, beef, shrimp, egg, tomato, tofu etc). It was super flavourful and a bit on the hot side! We also ordered the classic Hainanese boneless chicken which comes with the rice and soup $16. You can never go wrong with a classic. We were lucky to also be there for happy hour (2pm to 5:30pm) and ordered the papaya pineapple green salad for $5 and nyonya fried calamari for $8. These were great sharing items! Service was fast, courteous, and friendly. The only down side was that parking was metered, however I didn't mind because the food was amazing and so was the price point. One of my favourite places to dine in and it is mostly because of the decor of the restaurant. I just love how its all decked up with real live plants . Food is great as well with enough quality and amazing flavours. Sable fish is sunday special and it is worth a try. Will greeted me the second I walked in and had me seated in a jiffy - as it was almost 5 PM and the end of happy hour was nigh, he gave me the happy hour menu and told me to order very quickly so I could get the special prices - of course roti canal was my favorite and I ordered two along with Hainanese chicken rice - both of these dishes were absolutely yummy. Will did the right thing and really wanted me to order another beer and a dessert, but there was no way I could eat or drink anymore for fear I wouldn't be able to walk back to the hotel only one block away (!) - it was a great meal with great service- And very competitive pricing! Anyone that knows Malaysian food knows than Banana Leaf is one of the go to places. 4 stars only because I know how beef rendang is supposed to taste and I felt it could have used a bit more "saltiness". * Singapore laksa * mai tai * appetizer sampler: papaya & pineapple green Asian salad, spring rolls, roti canai, calamari, satay chicken skewers* I was fortunate to be able to try various cuisines on this trip but this is one of my absolute favourite: Malaysian I ate so much I had difficulty walking afterward that I waddled like a penguin (no joke; I was in pain haha). They had an "appetizer sampler" which consists of quite a variety, my other foodie-in-crime (little sister) also ordered laksa and I got a Mai tai; foods/drinks that I've been wanting to try So to start, the Singapore laksa was deeeeeeelish! I was worried it would be spicy but it was so mild, it was perfect The appetizer sampler was such a good deal; $15/person for 5 items. There were two of us and we still couldn't finish all of the food! The roti canai would be my absolute favourite but honestly, the rest were so good that I can't pick a second favourite. The Asian salad was definitely something different; I think there were also a hint of spice I was a bit worried about the spring rolls having beansprouts/onions but luckily, there was none so I devoured the rest immediately the calamari was nicely fried and I enjoyed the sauce it came with! Last but not least, the chicken satay skewers! They were served last so it was very nice and hot to eat. The chicken came off the skewers nicely and the sauce was perfect pairing! In fact, all the sauces that they paired the dishes with was excellent! Great food comes with great services! The service was absolutely wonderful, they constantly checked on us to make sure we're doing well and answered any questions we had! I've been here many times. I have always loved their food.... all of it, except okra, that is not food XD The wait staff are attentive and lovely, the dishes are beautifully presented and delicious. The roti is always my favourite dish, closely followed by the chicken kung pao. We have had the tasting menu several times and while it is absolutely wonderful... it is a LOT of food! I often wonder, when peeps write that portion sizes are too small, if they come from the US or places that simply serve bigger portions. This place is pricey but you get what you pay for folks and if we are talking value of an excellently prepared meal with great service in a lovely atmosphere? This place is a definite go to! We were seated right away upon arrival, and server instantly let us know that shell pacific oyster is available for that day, apparently we already planned ahead what to order. We had their famous pineapple seafood fried rice, which is served in a pineapple peel and it was indeed delicious with plenty of veggie and seafoods mixed into it. The tom yum goong has a savory aroma and pungent hot and sour taste. I was satisfied with the two dishes except for the pineapple papaya green salad, as the papaya was quite bitter, wrong choice of fruit I believe as the papaya taste like it was ripened artificially, which affected the taste of the salad as a whole. A popular spot for malaysian cuisine in Vancouver. The curry chicken is one of my favourites here when it is paired with the coconut rice. You cannot skip on the coconut rice! The singapore laksa is another must get here and I enjoy having it with the roti canai if I need some extra sauce with it. Update: I was criticized for leaving my opinion about the restaurant. I will not change my review or rating but definitely do not appreciate someone trying to justify mediocre food because I don't work in the food industry. The decor in the restaurant is pretty nice. Lots of plants and greenery. The staff was also friendly and helpful. The food was disappointing though. The roti canai was under done and probably one of the worse I've tried to date - tasted doughy. The satay skewers and hainan chicken was decent, similar to most other places. Doesn't really stand out from other restaurants. The lamb stew was definite not worth getting. It was mostly vegetables and not many pieces of lamb. We did not finish this dish. The char kuey teow was the star of the meal. It was done well and had lots of seafood. The noodles was the perfect texture and seasoned just right. Overall, would not be back. Maybe fried noodles are their specialty. Definitely order those rather than other dishes. read more

Visited their Broadway location for a birthday on a Saturday, not really that packed considering it was a weekend. Ordered a ton of things: Roti Canai, Nyona Calamari, Satay Skewers, Rendang Beef Curry, and Nasi Goreng. It was okay, the only standout for me was the Roti Canai (flatbread with a coconut curry sauce) which is a pretty hard dish to mess up on and everything else felt pretty lack lustre. The calamari, skewers, curry, and rice dish just felt like it didn't have enough flavour or the spice was too overpowering and the price of the items ($15-$23) were disappointing for the portion size. read more
