It's been such a long time since I've been able to visit one of my favourite authentic Malaysian food restaurants. When I'm in the neighbourhood, I order my favourite noodles from Auntie Irene. They don't have these all the time but when they do, it's always so delicious! Loh shi fun is the name and they are cooked perfectly with minced pork, bbq pork in a beautifully balanced sauce. It's equally good with their regular lo mee noodles! And make sure you add their pickled chilies for a nice spicy and vinegary kick. I can't wait to come back here again! read more

This is a small restaurant with just 3 tables. When you see it from the outside it looks a bit sketchy but the food is very good. We ordered the roti and satay for appies. The roti was $10, expensive for what it is but it was delicious. The chicken satays came with 3 skewers were also expensive (I think $16?), they were quite salty but the meat had a good texture. The value comes from the mains. We had the Mee goreng, presentation and taste was excellent. The Hainan chicken was very flavourful, the rice excellent and it even came with the soup ($16). We had the FBI for dessert. It was freshly made and delicious. We were the only table there in a Sunday night. Hope more people get to try their food! read more

I can't believe I have never been here till recently, and it has been around for 20+ years. It is pretty much a hole in a wall place, and it is a blink and you will miss it thing. Located along the main road, set in a tiny plaza with a few other shops, there are parking spots available in front of the shops. The lady boss was friendly and readily made suggestions when I asked for recommendations. Note: Satay is not made the traditional way, over the charcoal grill thing, so do not get your expectation up if you order that. I was tempted to get the kolo mee and the sarawak laksa. In the end, I had the sarawak laksa (since owner is from there) and pulut panggang. Both were so good. The gravy for the sarawak laksa had a more herby taste, reminded me of the herby food found in Cambodia or Vietnam. I could not tell what it was. Googling the recipe, I discovered it had galangal and lemongrass and maybe star anise, clove, nutmeg in it, so could be that? That pre flight take out!! Had a take out from here for my flight to Toronto. Normally, I'd go all the way to Vancouver/ downtown for food but I was short on time. And this place looked good. Located in a small strip plaza, it's tiny. Calling for orders was a little difficult since if they don't pick up, you have to leave a voicemail and wait till they call back. But I didn't wanna wait and kept trying! Got a hold of them eventually. The lady on the phone was so nice! Turns out it's a one woman show. She was so warm and sweet in person too. I walked into a place full of tables and 1 lady doing it all for everyone. She answered, she cook, she pack and she serves! The lady alone was 4 stars for me! She was so nice. Now the food! I got 3 things. They were all a ok for me. The Nasi goreng was interesting/ different. A lot of black peppers. The Nasi lamek: she packed it nice but it still spilled. Missing some flavors. **WE CHECKED IN FOR TAKEOUT** This precious gem is located close to where we are staying in Surrey, B.C. I had heard from people in the area that this Malaysian place was worth a try. And oh yes! Came here and decided to get a takeout so i can get more items. Well first of all, the name says it all that it is cash only so make sure you bring your cash. I met with the lovely owner lady and she was very nice. She recommended to get the nasi lemak, the penang char kway teow and the lo mee. Mannn i dont normally give 5 star but i got it takeaway and they were still amazing. The portion was super worth it too for the price. The lo mee definitely reminded with mie ayam, and it was just extremely good. The moment she said her nasi lemak was the best in town, ive had my doubts, but i guess she wasnt wrong. The nasi lemak was simply the best, the spice, the spicyness level, the mixture of everything, they were all just perfect. I've been hitting Malaysian restaurants around the lower mainland on a laksa kick and had flagged Malaysian Hut for when I was in the area. Today I demolished a bowl of their Sarawak Laksa and while I can't call any one restaurant as #1, I can say this is in the top for me. The broth was lovely and the people running the restaurant were lovely too. The bowl isn't meant for just one person and at ~$14 including taxes, the best price I've seen for the quality. It's one of the few Malaysian restaurants in town that serves its food authentically and truly representative of the dishes I eat whenever I travel back to Malaysia. Many times, I invite friends who have never tried Malaysian food and take care of all the ordering. Every time, they leave satisfied and rave about the food for days and weeks after. However, it took another 30 minutes for our lukewarm/cold Mee Goreng to arrive. It was underwhelming. There was not much meat. Portion was small for the price compared to other restaurants. I bit into cold pieces of tomatoes. By then, we just finished our meal quickly and did not bother to order dessert as originally planned. Overall, not worth visiting for awhile. Told my brother who lives here and what a huge mistake. Their so called Hainan Chicken Rice with roast chicken is made Brunei style???? It was NOT roasted. It seemed more like steamed chicken with soy sauce. Wth!!! The rice wasnt cooked Hainan style and was dry. Their satay tasted like rubber. Asked for sambal belachan and we got some salty prawn paste! Malaysian Hut is a cute little family restaurant that serves extremely delicious Malaysian food that is very reasonably-priced. I've eaten here 3-4 times now, and have always had consistently tasty food. Our most recent visit, we (boyfriend and I) had: Satay appetizer - chicken was juicy and very flavorful, though the peanut sauce didn't seem super authentic (was still yummy though!) Curry mee - holy mouth on fire! This was an awesome dish that was extremely spicy (there was a layer of chili oil on the surface of the soup noodles) but authentic and very flavorful. (Sriracha tastes like ketchup compared to this heat level for comparison's sake). There were large pieces of chicken, fish cake, tofu and egg served with the noodles, which had a very nice mouth feel. Definitely not a case of heat just for heat's sake, and the taste was totally worth the sinus-clearing and fire-breathing. Hainan Chicken - Very tender, well-cooked chicken served with tasty ginger rice and a soup. The spicy sauce it was served with was an excellent complement - spicy (though not as spicy as the curry mee) and a bit tart. FBI - (Fried banana and ice cream) YUMMY. Tempura-battered and deep fried bananas served with vanilla ice cream and a sprig of mint. The heat from the bananas and the cold from the ice cream made for a surprising combination that was very good and not too heavy. We also were served water with mint and lime, which was a nice touch (though it seems they may forgo this when the restaurant starts to get busy). However, since we visited when the chef/owner was also acting as the sous-chef *and* the waitress, this seems totally understandable. 4.5/5 stars overall. Arrived at Malaysian Hut around 8:35pm (closing at 9pm) they allowed us to sit and order with no qualms. The meal: My mother ordered the Curry Mee, dad ordered Penang Char Kway Teow and I ordered the Hainanese Chicken Rice. We ordered a Rojak to share as an appetizer. All of the food was authentic and super delicious. My family is from Singapore so we know good Singapore/ Malaysian food. The owner, Irene- She is always so humble and polite. It was around 9:20pm when we finished our meal. We were the last ones in the restaurant. She stayed back and chatted with us for about 30mins and did not rush us out. The presentation of the various dishes is upstaged only by the fantastic flavours. We took my mom to this place..it was our first time and we were disappointed. Firstly, a younger hostess while friendly, an older lady served us. My mom was asking if the peanut sauce was spicy and the hostess kept going on about it being served on the side of the sate. This went on for a few minutes and then this server asked my mom if she's never had sate...like wtf! I had to ask her point blank if the peanut sauce also came not spicy and she finally answered no...good grief...finally!! The sate was a bit overdone and not a lot of flavour. While the toppings were about 3 prawns, eggs, tofu, chicken, underneath it was all noodles and again I found it lacked flavour. I've visited Malaysia several times and have tried various hawker centers in Singapore as well. This place is pretty authentic. Ive tried the char kway teow, mee goreng, roti prata, gado gado, laksa, and beef rendeng. The best dishes are the noodle dishes, however they do tend to have very similar flavor profiles between one another. The laksa is good, but the broth could use a bit more flavor and thickness. The gado gado was wonderfully refreshing and had a strong peanut flavor. The roti prata had a perfect fluffy, flakey, and airy quality to it. My least favorite was the beef rendeng, which was dry and quite hard, but the sauce is solid. read more

I heard about this place from a Malaysian colleague who just moved here from KL that this was the best and most authentic Malaysian restaurant in the Lower Mainland, even better than Banana Leaf or Tropika. Even though it was quite a drive to Surrey from Vancouver, I went there with my family to check it out for a late lunch on a Saturday afternoon. The restaurant was a little hard to find so bring a GPS! We ordered the rojak salad, chicken satay, and roti canai to start, followed by the laksa noodle soup, and the hainanese chicken. All the dishes were very flavourful and the laksa was piping hot and spicy with really good rice noodles in the soup. The roti canai was fluffy and crispy and the curry dipping sauce it came with was delicious. The hainanese chicken was tender and served with a fragrant white rice. The rojak salad was very authentic with chunks of pineapple, cucumber, and other pieces of fruit/vegetable tossed together in a delicious sweet and spicy sauce. We had no room for any dessert, but next time I must order their kueh dadar as I love coconut desserts. Service was very pleasant - each dish took a little while to come as everything was made fresh to order. Prices were quite reasonable (entrees were around $7-$9).
