I would skip the lunch tasting course. It was a bit misleading since it says multiple courses, but everything just comes out on one plate. I didn't really enjoy most of the items, and the dessert was only okay. That said, their chicken and rice is absolutely delicious and worth coming back for. While doing some shopping in South Surrey, B.C. we happened upon a cute restaurant, Banana Leaf Malaysian Cuisine. In addition to South Surrey, they have 4 other locations the greater Vancouver area (Robson, Broadway & Oak, Kitsilano, and Davie). Up until this point, I had never tried Malaysian Cuisine, was always curious, but it just never happened. On a side note, I remember the first time I tried Thai food, back in Nashville when I was in my mid 30s. Odd that it took me that long and even odder considering I grew up in Brooklyn and New York City, the melting pot of the country. I didn't really have a concept of the distinction between different types of Asian food, my only point of reference was Chinese food. I remember being blown away upon that first time trying Thai food (and hooked ever since) and the experience was quite the same with my experience with Malaysian cuisine. We meant to order two appetizers but through a miscommunication, actually ordered three, oops! It was a good problem to have. Between the appetizers and the main dishes, while each course was a generous serving, nothing was heavy or made me feel bloated in any way. At the same time, the flavors just seemed to burst, with very distinct and pleasing tastes while combined with beautifully decorative touches that were aesthetically appetizing! The Eggplant Fries were really interesting. Personally, I find eggplant can be challenging to work, to get flavored just right and get cooked enough so it's not rough to eat but not cooked so much that it becomes mushy. Maybe it's just me but I do struggle with that at times. I found the fries to be a perfect balance between firm enough to warrant being called "fries" with just the right amount of chew, not too mushy. The Spring Roll Lettuce Wraps were beautiful, creative and imaginative. You place the spring roll inside the lettuce along with the vibrant red cabbage, fold the lettuce and dip into the sauce *chef's kiss* Both the Tofu Goreng appetizer and Tumeric Coconut Spinach were bursting with flavor. The Pineapple Fried Rice also had an amazing depth of flavor along with the beautiful presentation inside the pineapple. Last, but definitely not least .. I've never had anything like their Mango Margarita. As clear to see in the picture, it's filled with fresh ripe whole mango pieces which really helped elevate this drink to the next stratosphere lol. If this is what I can expect when eating Malaysian Cuisine, count me in for a repeat performance! read more

This restaurants is located right off of Highway 99 across from the Cactus Club Cafe. They have plenty of free parking spots around the establishment. We went on a Thursday for dinner around 6 PM and the place was about half full. Upon entering, our group was prompted seated. Service was efficient and friendly. The food came out roughly 15 minutes after ordering, which is quite reasonable. Their prices are a tad on the higher end for Asian cuisine, but the food tastes fantastic. read more

I love Malaysian cooking and hubby suggested B Leaf in Surrey so we went for lunch. I have always loved the Char Kuay Teow (flat rice noodles) at their Broadway location. What a bright airy restaurant with floor to ceiling windows and a modern decor! Hostess greeted us warmly, brought us to a table by the window. So many different menus to choose from...took us awhile to decide. Ordered: Fried eggplants-- lightly breaded, not too greasy $8 Mango salad-- there's green mango, carrots and jicama thinly sliced w a tangy dressing, refreshing $12 Hainan chicken rice (lunch menu)-- 5 thin pcs of boneless chic., not much 'chicken' taste. $19 Nasi Goreng-- a lot of fried rice but not much flavour and no egg on top! I had better in other parts of the world :-) $19 Char Kuey Teow-- great flavour but no wok hei, noodles a lil mushy. 1 pc of squid, 2 little shrimps and 11/2 pcs of thinly sliced fish cake that's all! Maybe from the "cheaper" Lunch menu? $19 Quite disappointed with the Char Kuey Teow which I came for, there was no Chinese sausages and scrambled eggs in there neither. Definitely back to John316 in Rmd for this noodle dish. All in all, the seasonings/ spices used are quite authentic and we are glad that Surrey has a Banana Leaf which is a lot closer to us than our favoured Broadway location. We stopped here to use the Tesla super charger and walked in to try this place. This was A great decision as everything here was just perfect. The dining room is airy and bright with a cute but tasteful jungle jungle theme. Service was quick and efficient. We tried the three layer milk tea, the tofu curry, and the coconut rice. The milk tea was perfectly not - to-sweet. The curry was a perfect blend of veggies and tofu swimming in a flavorful broth flavored with coconut, ginger, lime leaf, and tamarind. They didn't ask for spice preference and as a result it was a zero star spice level but tasty none the less. The coconut rice is steamed in a banana leaf which leaves a savory touch. Next time I'd try the ginger and garlic rice, though I did enjoy the coconut version. Highly recommend! read more

I love this restaurant! We have to stop in every time we come up to Canada. Glad there's on in Surrey. This one is just minutes from the boarder crossing so we don't have to drive up to Vancouver. Can't t go to Banana Leaf and not order the Roti Canai. It's to die for! We also got the kung pao cauliflower and Sambal green beans and okra, with shrimp, eggplant,and tomatoes. Delicious! I haven't been to this location before and decided to try it out. There's plenty of parking for the patrons and it wasn't busy during my visit. I ordered a bunch of dishes off the menu as recommended by the waiter. It came promptly and it was fresh. The portions were good as well. We usually go to Banana Leaf on Broadway and Willow but decided to try the new location in South Surrey as it is closer to home for us. Parking is plentiful since the restaurant is located in Surrey Mall right across from Cactus Club. We did not make reservations. I understand that they charge a fee for reservations. The restaurant is very modern and has high ceilings. It is a beautiful modern restaurant but I prefer the Broadway location. To me the location Surrey felt cold and sterile. The Broadway location has more of a warmth and welcoming feel to it. The service was very good. At the Broadway we were given nice spicy peanuts when we sat down. They were so good. When I asked for peanuts here we were give a dish of stale peanuts. I guess they don't do the peanuts like the Broadway location does. For dinner we had the bbq chui sue pork lettuce wrap, carmelized ginger sable fish with vegetables and rice, mango chili prawns and sticky rice with mango for dessert. The sable fish was delicious. The skin was nice and crisp but the fish itself was nice and moist. All the food was very well prepared and it came out hot and the main dishes were served together. They have a good selection of exotic drinks and the wine prices are reasonable. We would probably alternate between here and the Broadway location. I really like the feel of the Broadway location more but my husband prefers the Surrey location. read more

To me Banana Leaf has always been kinda like the Cactus Club of Malaysian cuisine . Do they serve the most authentic / homey dishes ? Maybe not , BUT they're always dependable , predictable and one for sure won't leave in disappointment . Note they've only opened for a couple months at this location and the interior is absolutely gorgeous , borderline stunning . Also the attention to details when it comes to their service quite simply put is unmatched . Case in point - when we couldn't finish their signature hainanese chicken ($26) and asked for a container , they actually gave us a new set of three sauces to go with it . Due to its (somewhat remote for us) location we probably won't be frequenting here as often as we'd like but we're already looking forward to our next visit : ) read more

Not very good. Slow service --even though not busy. Portions were very small vs price, i.e. the steak sate skewers were extremely small, something more fitting for a child. Everything was flavourless, not one item was good --maybe the drinks? I'm not sure why the high praise from some reviewers, most likely they never had good Malaysia/Asian food. Had a fantastic meal with friends at Banana Leaf's South Surrey location. The ambience is beautiful and warm, like a tropical getaway feel. My friends and I had the 12 course tasting menu for $69. At first, we were hesitant about the portion sizes, thinking they would be tiny morsels, but we were so wrong! So many dishes came out and each and everyone one of them delicious. I cannot recall the past times I went to Banana Leaf, but this one was memorable especially because of the food! The portions were more than we could handle, so we ended up taking some dishes home. It also came with dessert! Service was pleasant and fast. They kind of leave you to focus on your conversations, which I really appreciated. I recently tried the city restaurant of this name and this one. While I was not very impressed with either, I did like this location more. However, it was just not good enough to justify finding parking and dealing with the busy restaurant for such average food that lacks the delicious tastes i seek. I find it very toned down from flavors I have experienced at restaurants that serve this cuisine in other locations and other cities. The interior design of this restaurant is nice, and the service was commendable. The mediocre tasting food at such a high price was the issue that drives the two star review. Maybe sometime I'll try it again, but I'm not in any hurry to do so anytime soon read more

Had the tasting menu, it was not very good. We were very disappointed. The portions could have been better. Salad was nice. The flavors weren't complementary to each other. Calamari was not bad.
