Flavourful, hearty, and- wait, did someone say mango sticky rice? Banana leaf is a love of mine that I always return to. Infrequently, like once every couple years, but I come back nonetheless. Mango sticky rice is pretty good but mangos are usually a tad sour for my preference but coconut sauce, on the other hand, I could eat by the bucketful. Our table ordered the 7 course meal which was served family style. Pineapple papaya salad - I like acidic and sour foods but this salad was waaaayyyy too sour especially towards the end. It's possible we got the bottom end of the bowl but it was almost inedible. Chicken satay - The chicken was juicy and tender. The satay sauce it came with was okay but a bit on the sweet side for my taste Roti - super flakey and tasty! Loved the curry sauce Ginger glazed fish - cooked to perfection and one of the favourites of the night Beef curry - didn't like this dish too much. Went here for my early birthday tonight with my family and partner and the interior decor is so nice and very spacious. Staff were extremely helpful and the food came out so fast. The quality of the dishes are much better compared to the other Banana Leaf locations. We got the chicken satay skewers, roti canai, and calamari to start and it was sooo delicious. For the mains we shared the pineapple chicken fried rice, seafood gulai with coconut rice and sambal green beans and shrimp. Portions were plenty and alot to go around for everyone and we were very full. To finish we had the fried banana and ice cream dessert and it was made to order and perfect. It's nice there are windows in there to the main dining room, not low enough to see the other diners, but it makes the room feel less crowded. We weren't offered any baby/toddler accommodations, but it was fine having a baby and a couple young toddlers there. Came by for lunch during Dine Out Vancouver. Hard to go wrong with their 7 course tasting menu for $25. Secured a table by the window. Our server was pleasant and attentive. Now for the food....I loved the taste and presentation of all the dishes...would not change a thing. Started with an asian salad with pineapple and yellow peppers, then onto the chicken satay and roti canai. Love their roti. For the record: 0 Stars. This is the first time I felt like I was breaking into someone's house wanting to be fed. I'll tell you why. Walking through the door, the host was like a deer in headlights, "Oh crap, what are you doing here?." That was the energy right from the start. No hello, nothing.....just walked over to a table, placed the menus down and walked away. There was only one other table with two people, now I know why....the place was completely empty. Our server came over, again no welcome, no...do you have any questions....just kinda glared at us like we were holding the place hostage wanting curry. Odd. I asked him, well what do you recommend?......"everything", he said......very helpful, thank you. I asked for Guinness from tap. He brought me a glass full of foam, completely butchered a well-respected glass of beer (See pic.) If I were the manager or owner I would've fired him on the spot, but again I never would've hired someone as a waiter who couldn't pour beer. That's like for a hospital hiring a cardiologist who doesn't know where the heart valves are. Anyhoo.....the food was honestly disgusting and that's putting it nicely. The beef/lamb curry was more like canned soup with low grade fatty beef chunks. The Lamb Satay Skewers came with this wanna-be dip covered in grease and tasted even worse. Didn't realize there was a Banana Leaf in Kitsilano (W. Broadway passed MacDonald St). We came for early dinner after walking around Jericho Beach (eastside). We ordered the calamari, mee goreng and green beans. The calamari was tender and their cilantro, coconut lime dipping sauce was different than the usual sauce, but it was refreshing with today hot weather. The mee goreng was flavorful with the blend of different ingredients such as beef, shrimp, egg, tofu, and tomato. I've been to the other locations and the one here seemed to be better. The green beans had a little spice to it, the greens beans had a nice cruspy crunch and just the right amount of shrimp paste. I haven't gone to Banana Leaf in a long time, but happy that it is still here. The staff was friendly and the tables followed safety protocols with tables spread apart with a plastic divider in between. Bonus that they also have some patio tables at the front and back. My two favourite dishes were the crispy Baba's wings and the Roti Canal with curry sauce. The satay beef was okay, though I think I prefer the chicken one bettwer. The Spring rolls and Mee Goreng was a nice complement to the other dishes. A nice thing to try during lunch hour is their 7 course taster menu for $25. They had an "appetizer sampler" which consists of quite a variety, my other foodie-in-crime (little sister) also ordered laksa and I got a Mai tai; foods/drinks that I've been wanting to try So to start, the Singapore laksa was deeeeeeelish! I was worried it would be spicy but it was so mild, it was perfect The appetizer sampler was such a good deal; $15/person for 5 items. There were two of us and we still couldn't finish all of the food! The roti canai would be my absolute favourite but honestly, the rest were so good that I can't pick a second favourite. The Asian salad was definitely something different; I think there were also a hint of spice I was a bit worried about the spring rolls having beansprouts/onions but luckily, there was none so I devoured the rest immediately the calamari was nicely fried and I enjoyed the sauce it came with! Last but not least, the chicken satay skewers! They were served last so it was very nice and hot to eat. The chicken came off the skewers nicely and the sauce was perfect pairing! In fact, all the sauces that they paired the dishes with was excellent! Great food comes with great services! The service was absolutely wonderful, they constantly checked on us to make sure we're doing well and answered any questions we had! It's my first time trying Malaysian food and definitely not going to be my last! So I've been to Banana Leaf dozens of times over the years & I just realized - no review! What!?! Ok so here goes. I would often hit up BL at this location (BL has 5 locations so check Google Maps for a location that suits you) every time I went to Greek Day. Several blocks of Broadway are shut down on a Sunday in June in this area. While with family & friends enjoying the festivities of Greek Day, we just could not keep ourselves from the divine tasting food at BL!!! So we would break here for lunch then continue on walking around the festival! A friend from Toronto (who used to live here) was visiting for 2 nights & craving Asian food for dinner = BL was due for a visit! I really do like this location a lot & it definitely did not disappoint tonight for sure! We ordered the usual hits - Roti Canai, Sambal Green Bean, Pineapple Fried Rice, Caramalised Black Cod & the much missed (I love this dessert!) Pisang Goreng! Allergy alert - comes with peanuts! A Malaysian restaurant, one of four locations in Vancouver. Walking into the restaurant, we are greeted by a friendly host carefully checking for covid passports. There is hand sanitizer at every table and at the check in at the door. Plexi glass is between all tables and less than 6 seated at the tables. There is a fresh, pleasant feeling here. The host and servers are all polite and respectful. The food and drink delicious. There was just enough food to satisfy plus a little extra to take away. The bathrooms are also clean. The way Banana Leaf makes it is refreshing and great way to cleanse your palate. CALAMARI - Great appetizer. I've never had a more terrible dining experience. All eaters should beware of this place, and be prepared for extremely poor service - STAY AWAY, ESPECIALLY if you are looking for veggie / vegan / vegetarian / plant-based options. Something must have changed since reviews from the past said they used to be very accommodating. We chose this restaurant to celebrate a special occasion because the reviews said that Banana Leaf has lots of plant-based options. When I asked for recommendations, our waiter made me feel awful for asking and said the only thing I can eat is "the spinach dish" and a side salad. He was IMPATIENT, RUDE and down right MEAN about it, he made no attempt to help me find an alternative. For a restaurant that advertises a "plant-based menu", I felt BULLIED into ordering the spinach dish, which is a pile of plain stir fried spinach. It was so demeaning that I kept being told that there was nothing else the restaurant can offer for someone looking for a plant-based option. I also ordered a side of plain rice and shared a "black rice pudding" which was a horrible tasting pile of mush (how can you get sticky rice and coconut milk so wrong?) The service for our group was also the absolute worst, when the dishes were delivered to our table, no one knew what the dishes were, and when they went to ask, they never came back. No water refills and just an awful experience overall. My "spinach dish" was $15, the same as my friends' chicken curries and beef noodles. It was a plate full of plain spinach. It's not right. Singaporean laksa - too much coconut milk, too thick/creamy, spiciness was on point, but the fish cake, chicken & shrimp was below mediocre. The chicken and shrimp weren't flavourful and the fish cake was limp and felt like it was made of a lot of fillers. Seating was spacious (we were seated in booths) and tables were wide enough to accommodate a fair amount of plates. The furnishing and decoration was also well chosen. However, it was pretty dim in there; the lack of lighting made it pretty hard to A) take photos and B) read the menu. Service: Service was honestly a disappointment. Our water was only refilled when we were about to pay our bill, and when our waiter was taking our order, he didn't say anything, just wrote down our orders and left without a word. When servers dropped our food off at the table, they would quietly announce the name of the dish and leave straight after. No hospitality here, unfortunately. Food: Now, the food was the star of the night. Oooh, this Banana Leaf is so much better than the one in Los Angeles! The location is very spacious, comfortable, and decorated in a way that gives it a nice Southeastern vibe. We came here as a large group, so we were able to share a couple things. We got the fried calamari and roti pratas to share. Each person ordered a version of curry or fried rice, all which were good. I ordered the Singaporean Laksa (as always). The broth was rich with coconut milk, which I like a lot. Apparently authentic laksa doesn't is more seafoody and less coconutty - but I prefer the more Westernized version. There were a LOT of noodles in my dish, which made less room for soup. Sad :( The nasi goreng was more tomato-y than usual. Not sure if it's supposed to taste like that, but my friends liked it so I guess that's good! I personally loved the roti and calamari. Recently had their curry laksa here for lunch. It was quite good, the soup is nicely flavoured with coconut milk, turmeric and other spices. The bean sprouts was not cooked which is perfect because by the time I start eating my soup, it was somewhat crunchy and slightly cooked. There were some boneless chicken bits along with half an egg. They used vermicelli although generally a type of yellow noodle (skinnier than Shanghai noodle) is also used. The level of spiciness was mild to medium and the overall flavour was decent. And is still always my favorite Malay Restaurant I usually order the Hainanese Chicken, Roti Canai, Skewers, Pineapple fried rice. This location recently reopened after renovating. I have been eating here for several years when I'm in Vancouver for seminars. It is consistently excellent food, with good service and reasonable prices. They do very well when we take a group of 8-12 for dinner too. Growing up in Malaysia, we couldn't pass up the opportunity to eat here. We ordered beef rendang, gado gado salad (this salad is actually of Indonesian origins) and 'sambal okra, brinjal, green beans and shrimps' (all in one dish). The beef cubes/chunks were nicely marinated, and the rendang sauce was more curry in texture (in Malaysia, the rendang sauce is much thicker, as one needs to cook it several hours). Despite this, the rendang curry was just as flavorful. I use the curry label to describe the constituency, rather than the flavor. The bowl was spooned clean. The kaffir lime leaves added to the flavor. Gado gado salad has steamed bean sprouts, slices of hard boiled eggs, green beans and small chunks of potatoes. Peanut sauce is poured over all these. The key is peanut sauce. This was done just right, and it help pull the salad altogether. The last dish must be a chef's special creation, as this was the first time we ate a mix of these three vegetables. It was a hit for us. The shrimps in this dish provided some nice meaty texture, though we enjoyed the vegetables by themselves in the sambal sauce just as much. I do not pass on any Malaysian dessert with gula melaka (coconut sugar). Unfortunately, there wasn't that much gula melaka in the two desserts we chose, which is a shame. I chose the sticky rice with mango. What makes or breaks this dessert (besides the gula melaka sauce) is the sweetness of the mango slices. That was the case last night, as the mango slices were a bit tart. My wife had the kuih dadar, which is flour wrapping with shredded coconut stuffings, soaked with his melaka. This was much better. We've been to this location a couple of times now for weekend lunch. The menu has something for everyone, and the portion sizes are adequate. The staff is efficient, and the restaurant has a relaxed atmosphere. I had the hot and sour soup and roti cani, both were delicious. The soup was actually spicy which I really appreciate. Wow I think I just found the best Malaysian cuisine in Vancouver.. I really enjoyed the whole experience here. The restaurant name "Banana Leaf" caught my attention and I was feeling famished so when I unhesitatingly entered the restaurant I definitely got more than I asked for. From the outside it looks like an everyday casual restaurant but you'd be amazed by how many awards they have won. (check pic!) and the colorful interior design is superb. The waitors wear these ethnic aprons and of course not to mention the people love us on Yelp in the front :p The waitor greeted us very warmly and every single staff was so accommodating and really made sure we were enjoying every minute of our dining experience. I was rather overwhelmed by the abundant menu choices so we ordered the 9 course dinner ($28/person) I especially enjoyed the green beans, seafood curry and curry mussels! They were all cooked to absolute perfection. The satay with dipping sauces were heavenly as well. Just be aware, that the 9 course dinner is really filling so you might have to to take some home because you cannot go home without eating dessert. Last but not least the Fried banana with ice cream was scrumptious and a good way to end dinner. Presentation was great as well. I would not say this is fine dining but definitely not so casual either, somewhere in between is right. Needless to say for the comment card I ticked Excellent for pretty much every criteria.
