Just before the long weekend ended, I went to an exclusive dining experience at Black Market Supper…read moreClub located in South Surrey. It is hosted and prepared by a world class chef with no identity being revealed. They wear black masks during the entire time cooking in the kitchen. Location and time stay as a mystery until 72 hours before the dinner. Each dinner is attached to a unique theme, and our night is to honor 25 years Anniversary of the French Laundry. 72 hours before the dinner, I received the email which includes a detailed instruction on how to get to the said location and a suggested wine list to pair with the meal. Given said that, the dinner doesn't include alcohol, but sparkling, still water, tonic, soda, and cola are complimentary. You are more than welcome to bring your own bottle to enjoy the meal. The dinner began at 7pm, and we were told to arrive at 6:45pm. Feel free to mingle and find your seat, while waiting for the dinner to start! Once everyone is arrived, we commenced our dinner with the bread service, featuring Dutch Cheese Charcoal Gougères with 3 type of butter. - Lemon shallot and herb - Brown butter, burnt onion - Everything bagel I love the gougères, crispy shell with a hollow inside. It tastes great with the butters, and my favorite is to pair with the Lemon Shallot & Herb Compound Butter. Our next course is the Lobster Pancakes with carrot brown butter emulsion. The pancake is stuffed with a generous amount of lobster, chives, and mascarpone. I really enjoy the simplicity of the dish, but I wonder if it is meant to be served lukewarm. Nevertheless, I still enjoyed having each bite with a touch of the purée. Compared to the previous dish, the White Truffle Custard is more flavorful and on a saltier side. The truffle custard is served with a black truffle ragout in a colorful egg shell. The aroma from the truffle is lingering in the mouth, while enjoying the silky custard. Yabba Dabba Do is the main dish for the night, and I was looking forward to this dish the most. There are multiple components on the dish, which includes wagyu beef, beef chop and bone marrow stuffed inside a potato. It is then garnished with chanterelle mushrooms and bordelaise sauce. This dish is rich and flavourful. The beef chop is tender, and the meat just fell off the bone. My slice of wagyu beef is delicious and melts in my mouth. The bone marrow just oozes out of the potato, and it tastes delightful to pair with the potato. Lastly, the chanterelle and bordelaise played an important role on the dish, which add flavours and ease the heaviness that may bring by the protein. We ended our meal with a dessert (of course!), Chocolate Veloute. It is layered with a Dutch caramel cookie and cinnamon stick ice cream, with 24 karat gold powder and edible flowers as garnish. The dessert can get heavy after few bites, and it is difficult to crack the cookie to enjoy with other components on plate. I also found it very sticky and too sweet to my liking, especially right after a flavourful dish. * Overall Impression * I really enjoyed this dining experience with Black Market Supper Club, as it is mysterious and fun. Though each dish may have some flaws, I enjoyed the presentation and each element on the dish. I really like the idea of disclosing address and time few days in advance, which makes me more excited and looking forward to the dinner. Although it is far from the city, it is worth to go and enjoy a private dinner with a group of friends or family for special occasions. They were blaring death metal the whole time, which is definitely up my alley. The beer list is just average, but I could enjoy a glass or two here. Food-wise, I got a veggie burger (a proper homemade bean-based patty, not a fake meat one), with a side caesar salad (~$20 + surcharges for vegan cheese). The burger was massive; I liked the patty, but it was otherwise a fairly low-effort, low-quality burger -- iceberg lettuce, lifeless white bun, etc. -- and quite pricey. After tax/tip, that was a ~$28 meal. Yikes. They also are able to do vegan nachos, but I'm not huge into junk food. Maybe I'll try them another time if I'm here with other vegans. Fun spot that beats most environments solely because of the music., but there's little else to lure me back given how many superior vegan food options there are in the area.

This all started from my significant other who deserves the credits for finding this place from a…read morecertain flyer which prompted us to go to their website, which then prompted us to make an order a few days prior to today, and also putting in an extra order for their house-made loaves of bread. This is the story of finding a better sandwich which most of you probably have not found yet, or you call that place... (Finch's, ahem) the place which you swear by, well I'm calling this out, shots fired, that you can forget about the one you know, cause the new kid is way better at sandwiches and it will be only a matter of time before I put in another order and go pick it up! Crumb does not have a store front, so you are going to have to put your order over the phone or on their website and go to their place of business which is a commissary where most of the food-trucks in this city produce food before they roll out like Transformers out to the city. When I arrived the food was already nicely packaged and bagged and ready to go. What you ask was ordered: Fried Chicken sandwich, Prociutto & Pear (both lunch box meals with salad) and an order of sourdough bread and focaccia for home munching. They guided me up to their workspace area as David took my order, and Trevor was cutting up onions probably for another sandwich order that was being placed. I was off with my huge two packages, ready to devour soon as I awaited my partner in crime for lunch. I did not waste too much time on not eating my meal, it is fried chicken in a sandwich after all, and it is very smart that they have stickers to identify which box is which sandwich, and when you open it, these guys know how to place and package, where it was nicely cut into even portions and wrapped in wax paper. The piece of buttermilk fried chicken was still crispy on the outside, and this was probably a good 20+ minutes since I removed it from when they cooked it, placed in between the milk & honey bread with a great balance of pea sprouts, radicchio, apple, cilantro and lime, every bite was hearty but not heavy, there was always a bite, yet there was always great balance where you didn't feel over-breaded, or over-meated and usually I am pretty done after a half a sandwich, where I could have eaten the other half, but wait I had another type of sandwich to gobble up, I can definitely recommend this sandwich, as I would order it again. Onto my second half of the lunch, which is the prociutto and pear, and anyone who has eaten artisan sandwiches in Vancouver swear by one place (which has been named already) and I have had it, I was not 'wowed' I enjoyed the combination of sweet and savory but I thought that the bread used was a stale white floured unmemorable holder of the in betweens of this package. Now comes this same creation with more a way higher premium package, to start off is the outsides, which is a fig and walnut bread, and then you have the onion jam, prociutto, caramelized pear, brie and arugula.... reaction, holy smokes, this is the crown winner for this sandwich, hands down with a slap in the face. You can actually taste everything from the fine crunch of the fresh bread to the mixture from all the different textures within this creation where I loved the addition of the onion jam, and the course feeling this provided to the smooth brie, and biting down on the pear which made this sandwich refreshing, all the way down to the meat, now in non-dirty words: now that's a package! I almost suffered food coma, my significant other... well you are going to have to ask her, all i know is she was still snacking on their house-made sour dough loaf tonight, where I tried a bite, and I have never had a loaf so fluffy fresh where I am beginning to think I'll make some sandwiches this week.... maybe not if we just polish off the bread. In the end if you want to 'one-up' the sandwich you might have just had, contact David and Trevor and make the effort as they have made the effort to use great ingredients to make a wicked sandwich, and if you want awesome bread, well either you are in trouble or you are in luck to get your stuff here as their loaves are not sold in store..... yet. Till next we meet for my next order, thanks for now screwing my expectations up of a good sandwich, let alone bread!

David was very nice and accommodating with my customization of the menu. I ordered the Prosciutto & Pear Combo with Salad ($14.50-4.5/5): Absolutely loved the combination of pear, prosciutto and brie. I did find a bit more difficult to tear apart the prosciutto between bites and since he used a fig & walnut bread without any vinaigrette it was a tad bit too sweet. The spinach & fennel salad was good. I loved the dressing. I think it was made with apples. Never heard back from him when I asked. Curried Pork & Grape with sesame seed braid instead of multigrain bread ($11.00-3/5): Chose this one 'cause it seemed a bit more different than the others. It had roasted pork loin, black currant, pea tendrils, caramelized grape, fennel and curry aioli. To be honest, I didn't exactly like the curry aioli and this sandwich got me thinking..maybe I should have gone with the fried chicken or the beef brisket even. The store is last lot down. When I went there was no sign for them as yet. So I called and David came down with the machine so I could pay with credit card.I liked how the sandwiches are nicely packaged in the box and cut in half so you can eat them conveniently.
