Hoinan Chicken Rice

I love the chicken rice here, and I could eat if everyday if I could! Do yourself a favor and try one, or 10!

Curry beef brisket

I was super pumped to visit this restaurant because a co worker of mine hyped it up. We ordered a large hainanese chicken, expecting it was large enough to share. But it wasn't. Chicken was just cut up smaller, to make more pieces. The flavour was good, the ginger sauce made up for it. Tbh, for the $16.50 and with how much it came with. I wouldn't order it again So we also ordered the curry beef brisket. That was a good portion, flavourful. Asked for extra spicy- but it was mild. So if you don't like it too spicy, don't worry. Restaurant was kinda full, we got the last table but yet there was a puddle of water under it. All in all, I wouldn't order the chicken again. Maybe I'll try the laska.

Delicious Hainanese Chicken rice. Dined here years ago and irdered takeout this time. Still as delicious as I remember.

We don't really have any Singaporean/Malaysian food back in Hawaii so whenever I travel, I try to keep a look out for these types of cuisine and savor it as much as I can. My friend (Tingting W.) was on a hunt for some good Laksa and she came upon this place! Their pictures were super enticing so we decided to come here for dinner. It's a really small place that takes CASH or DEBIT CARD only, so plan accordingly. We didn't have to wait too long and they let us order while we waited to help speed things along. We decided to get: Roti Canai: Absolutely loved this; I only had Roti once in my life and this hit the right spot. It comes with a curry dipping sauce that was pretty light in flavor Hainan Chicken Rice: Plump, juicy pieces of chicken and the rice was really flavorful Fishball Laksa: This was good but it needed more curry flavor and the spice does hit you Malay Spicy Pan Mee: We were able to adjust the spiciness to mild and it was perfect. It reminded me of chow funn but better They also have a variety of drinks; I feel like there's something for everyone on the menu. Definitely put this on your itinerary if you're in the Vancouver area. Oh how I wish Hawaii had more Southeast Asian dishes but I guess until then, I'll just keep on traveling for these good eats

To be honest the chicken rice was just okay. The chicken was good, but I wish there was more soy sauce on it. It was kind of pricey around $14-15 for the portion size. The chili sauce was really good - it's kind of sweet though. There wasn't any soup included if you do takeout. My friend ordered Pan Mi and she recommended that one too.

Mamalee is offering COVID friendly takeout right now- you can order ahead online and choose your pickup time! Sooo convenient :) My order was ready when I got there for the time I set it for. I was ordering for myself on the weekend and I got the following: -Regular Hainanese chicken + rice $13.50- I thought this was a little pricey for what you get (the portion size was smaller than I hoped for, no leftovers for me). The chicken is super well done and the sauces that come with it were on point! I wasn't too fond of the rice- I was hoping for more flavor from it. Comes with some slices of cucumber as well. -Roti Canai $8 (also a little pricey imo) - comes with dipping sauce. This was INCREDIBLE! Loved how flaky and buttery the roti was and the dipping sauce really topped this off perfectly. The BEST ROTI dipping combo I've had so far and I cannot wait to come back and get this again!! Food was overall great but I was not too impressed with the pricing. But for how much I enjoyed the roti, I wouldn't mind paying $8 just to get it again xD

Chicken Laksa noodles (11.95$)

I love Malaysian food! My personl favoriets are Malaysian Laksa noodles and Hainanese chicken & rice. When I first heard about Mama Lee, I had to visit the place as they were known for their Hainanese chicken & rice. Mama Lee is located on W Broadway near The Eatery and is about a 17 minute bus ride from UBC. The restaurant is quite small - about 5-7 tables and as you can imagine, gets filled up quickly around meal times. We arrived at around 6:30 pm and got one of the last few tables. The kitchen seemed to be very busy for a small restaurant and there were 3-4 servers standing and eating dinner hastily at the counter. They close pretty early (8-9pm), so make sure to arrive early. We ordered a bowl of hot laksa noodles and platter of hainanese chicken & rice (half chicken). Read more here: https://postsizedbites.wordpress.com/2019/02/05/mama-lee/

Chili pan mee. So yummy.
Carolyn L.

We tried a few dishes and they were hit and miss. The good: - spicy (chili) pan mee. This was really good and reminded me of the chili pan mee in KL (Malaysia) and Singapore. The ikan bilis (deep fried dried anchovies) were crispy and nicely salted. It was not too spicy and the egg could have runnier yolk. The noodle was al dente and tasted like ban mian (hand made noodles). - Hainanese chicken rice. This was pretty legit. I like how the chicken was plated like in Soup Restaurant in Singapore. Only the green onion or ginger (?) sauce was different. The rice was good too. The not so good: - Hainanese chicken laksa. This was so-so. The laksa gravy was quite tasteless, and lacked the rich lemak of the coconut milk. It seemed to be missing some spices too. Banana Leaf (on Denman) has a better version. - Iced chendol. Total fail. How could it not have gula melaka? Gula melaka (palm sugar) is the backbone of the chendol. I could not finish it as it was just like drinking coconut milk. A waste of the $5+ for this dessert drink - Iced bubur cha cha was also average. Not as bad as the chendol. I will come back again, just for the chili pan mee and maybe chicken rice. There were many people waiting outside when we got there. Just write your name on the wait list board by the door and wait. Note: this was Cafe D'light before the renaming to Mamalee.

Someone online said that Mamalee Malaysian Delight have the best Hainan Chicken in the area, so I decided to come try it out for myself. According to my spoiled tastebuds, the Hainan Chicken was good, but was not something that can rock my world. Small restaurant with a simple menu, my mind was fixed on Hainan Chicken upon arrival, and I also ordered the Laksa to share. The Hainan Chicken was lean and moist, but I didn't care for their rice too much. The rice of most Hainan Chicken I had in the past were more moist and flavorful. Perhaps Mamalee is more health conscience, and didn't pour all the chicken jus and oil into the rice. Laksa was average, and certainly welcoming on a cold winter day. Note: They do not take credit cards here. Cash or Debit Card Payment only.

It may not seem like the most fancy or amazing restaurant but their food is absolutely delicious. They are most famous for their Hainanese chicken which is always consistently cooked perfectly. The chicken is always super tender. It comes with a small chicken broth soup. I got the regular portion (pictured) but recommend large for chicken lovers. Their laksa is also delicious, being light enough to drink yet still has the creamy coconut tastes. If you don't feel like a full laska, you can opt for their roti canai, which is crispy, softy, and savoury. The food is great for the pricy. One thing though, they are cash only or debit. It also does get pretty busy during lunch and dinner hours. However, you can always order take out - which normally takes around 20 mins

Reasonably priced and fresh taste hainanese chicken rice. The sauce is good too. This place reminds me of home cooked meals.

Boneless Hainanese Chicken
Sandy Y.

Mamalee Malaysian Delight is located in Kitsilano, and it is more closer to UBC area. This place is pretty small. We ordered half Boneless Hainanese Chicken. It was nice and soft, but it was in a quite small portion size. We also ordered a Laksa Noodle Soup. It was ok, but it was not the best we have have though. Totally don't recommend the Chee Chong Fen. Food: Can Try! 3/5 Service: ‍‍‍ 3/5 Price: $30-$50 for two Presentation: 2/5 Parking: Street Parking Would I Return: No Explore the Menu: Boneless Hainanese Chicken, Laksa Noodle Soup , Roti Canai, Chee Chong Fen Tips: *Accept Cash or Debit Card only *Charge extra for dipping sauce *Charge extra for container

tenderest chicken i've ever had - definitely! the already marinated chicken, rice, and the hot sauce is the perfect combination. it's different from what we had at home (ginger sauce on the side), but after the first bite - you really don't need it! (we tried to ask for extra but was told they'll charge for additional sauces). cash only, and you could place order through an app. i'd say to give it a try definitely when you are in town!

If you have ever had Peranakan food in Singapore and wish there is a place selling it in Vancouver,…read morelook no further. Bibik's is a true blue authentic Peranakan pop up kitchen. Unfortunately it is not a full fledged restaurant (Covid has scuttled the plan) but luckily we can still get to have our Nonya food fix via the commissary kitchen. The challenge is actually placing an order. It is a pre-ordering system where you have to stalk their IG account. The call to order is usually on Sunday and you place the order online and make payment. Then you wait a week for the pick up at YVR Prep on Saturday (90 mins window). I am lucky to get my order in as it sells out very quickly. They have a limited quantity per week. It is usually 3 items which are available each week (appetizer/snack/dessert, entree and a drink) I think I have tried almost all the dishes they offer over the months. Everything is good. My absolute favorite is the Mee Siam. I liken it to Violet Oon (or typical Bibik household) standard in Singapore. You could taste the spices in the rempah. The aromatic is more pronounced. I just feel there is pride in the dishes made, to introduce what real Peranakan food is. For me that is really Singapore food, food that I miss. Now if only there is Ayam buah keluak too, that will make my life complete. Haha. I also wish for itek tim, hee peow soup and Babi pongteh. I was so glad I managed to try the Tok Panjang which was available during the holidays. That was really a feast with plenty of dishes -- itek sio, sambal prawns, chap chye, ngoh hiang, achar, pulot hitam and the nonya Kuehs. I love the design and packaging too. It is all very simple yet pretty and great care has been taken in the products. They are very friendly too. Follow their IG if you have a hankering for Singapore food. They usually post pictures of Singapore and the food. But that may not be a great idea now since traveling is restricted and it may make the cravings even worse.

Pickup was easy from their commissary kitchen. As you can see in the photo, the portions are very generous and it was very flavourful! There are actually a lot of prawns hidden under the fried egg, arranged artfully in a spiral. The fried egg was perfectly cooked with a soft runny yolk (just the way I like it!) Apparently they sell out very fast so if you want to order, best to do so on their instagram on the day the release the menu for the week. Only comment I have is I wish it was hotter as I picked it up during lunch hour and brought it home immediately to eat. I was too hungry this time, but next time I'd probably heat it up more. Still delicious lukewarm!

During my first visit I ordered the monthly special, which was a Burmese burger with mala spiced fries . The Burmese burger featured tea leaf aioli that I could honestly bathe as it was swimmingly delicious. I wish the fries had a little bit more spice, but we a good accompaniment.. After reading some reviews on yelp I came back a second time and ordered what seemed to be a local favorite which were the salted egg yolk chicken wings, which were honestly to die for especially with the chili crisp sauce . New favorite dish alert !!!!! Super crispy , salty , flaky and unique chicken wings . First time I ever tried salted egg anything despite seeing it as an option a few times in the past at Chinese restaurants in San Francisco, as well as in Singapore. I'm grateful that this place put "salted egg "on my radar. I've since had several dreams about those chicken wings and was a little sad two weeks later that the place was remodeling. It was literally my first stop after getting my rental car. I'm glad though that this place is only a temporary closed due to remodeling as I highly recommend this place.

Usually we could eat those dishes in Singapore and Malaysia as street food but we were lucky that we could eat them here in Canada. I recommended reserving a table if you haven't tried more than four guests. When we placed an order, we had to go to the counter, ordered the food and paid. The service was good. Servers were friendly. We could find street parking but I would recommend parking in the residential area and walking to the restaurant.
