Heard quite a bit of hype about this place. Parking is plentiful in the strip mall parking lot. The interior is classy and clean. Staff were friendly. The food here is a wee bit on the pricey side at $12-15 for a dish. Honestly the portion is rather lacking, as half the dish is some salad. I could probably eat 4 trays worth of food. I tried both the brisket and Hainan chicken. Taste was decent but nothing special. The one thing that really turned me off though was the absolutely INSANE amount of garbage this place generates. All of the food is served in disposable plastic trays. There is no recycling or anything. Utensils are disposable too. I would imagine that 10-15 used trays are enough to completely fill a trash bag. Knock 1 star off. The world already has enough of a problem with excess plastics, and this really does not help. Just thinking about this makes me kind of sick. If management is reading this, for the sake of the planet PLEASE move to non-disposable stuff. I can't in good conscience return here until I hear this is fixed. read more

Fresh and Juicy Hainan chicken that's really quite delicious and makes for a great meal when you are too lazy to cook. Food is vibrant with flavourful ginger and tangy hot sauce on the side. The place is also clean and uplifting. An enjoyable meal and definitely above average hainan chicken. If you're going to get a drink I recommend the mango pineapple one with real pineapple chunks inside :) read more

I don't get what is the hype about this place. This place is food court style. No water for customers. No service. They only have 3 items on the menu. My friend got the beef brisket and chicken curry. He told me both the curry were disgusting. The beef brisket is the low end beef brisket with lots of fat and super chewy. Don't recommend getting it. I got the Hainanese chicken. First off the chicken was hot to warm. I have had Hainan chicken before and it should not be hot or warm. The chicken should be cooked at the right temperature and then place in ice to cool so it is not over cooked inside. The chicken at Hainan kitchen was over cooked. Skin was not smooth but rough and somewhat dry. The color of the chicken was off with areas lightly shaded grey. Not good at all. Their quality tasted worse than the cheap hong kong cafe that offers Hainan chicken but way cheaper. Portion is not wow and price for the taste is not wow either. I suggest going to Mama Lee, Penang Delight, Kaya, City 1 Cafe and you know what is good Hainanese chicken. Sauce is not the traditional sauce as well. Rice is not rich in flavor but is rich in food coloring. Super yellow rice. Honestly, even Banana leaf Hainanese chicken has beat them off the scale. Also note this place is not recycle friendly. They only serve 3 dishes - Hainanese chicken rice, beef brisket curry and chicken curry. I'm not really sure if it's Singapore Hainanese chicken rice they are trying to re-create. In any case, you will never find such yellow rice for Hainanese chicken rice in Singapore. It seemed common in Vancouver. I asked other restaurants about that yellow rice before and was told it was due to chicken fats. I don't buy that story since you can probably find more chicken rice stalls in Singapore per square feet than in any other places, and I have never seen that kind of rice. The chicken is not the traditional Hainanese style where the chicken is poached and then dipped in an ice bath to prevent over cooking. It will also create a cold chicken meat with slippery skin. Personally I do not like cold chicken so I am ok with warm chicken meat. I prefer the roast chicken version which cannot be found here. Chili sauce makes or breaks the dish in Singapore and this is not the best. Then again, all the sauces here are never similar to those in Singapore. For Vancouver, I think this is an average dish but definitely not worth driving out to Richmond for. Maybe that explained the empty restaurant when we were there. Located in the busy Garden City Plaza. Parking could be hard to find depending on the time of the day. Small but clean restaurant. Seating was rather limited; however. We ordered a half-Hainanese chicken for take out @ $15.98. It came with sauce, salad, and rice. The chicken wasn't bad and it was completely deboned. The texture of the meat was also good. I've had Hainanese chicken where the meat was way too soft in a disgusting kind of way. Overall, the dish was "ok" - it was yummy but nothing about it screamed "wow" - exactly a 3 star in my mind. What I didn't like was that even when you dine in, they used those plastic bento box containers and utensils. The service was also extremely slow. It appeared that they were quite understaffed. The cashier was also not very friendly. Essentially, it was basically higher-priced food served in food court style setting. As you can see from my photo, the menu selection is rather small. A solid 3.5 stars for me, but I'd round it up to 4. We have been ordering take out and Uber Eats for a while from this store. While the owners are not all smiles, they are gruffly polite and that's good enough for me. For $11.90, you can get a serving of Hainanese chicken rice. It comes with a chicken leg's worth of chicken, a decent portion of rice, and a side salad, plus soy sauce, ginger green onion oil and spicy sauce. Good stuff and a decent lunch set. You can add a drink for $2.50. I got the milk tea today and while it was a bit too sweet, hit the spot and gave me the nice caffeine kick I needed. We've also ordered the whole chicken set for $35. It comes with a huge box of rice and salad. It's big enough for a filling meal for two, plus another portion for lunch tomorrow. The half chicken set for $18 also is a good satisfactory lunch for two people. Overall I find the quality of the food decent and the price to portion ratio is good too. read more

Terrible customer experience. Went to pick up fantuan customer order and showed my phone order number to the owner, older gentleman bald and glasses. He was rude, aggressive and condescendingly told me I should read my order without exchanging any eye contact. I don't understand how some simple decorum and initiative from this type of business owner can run a customer-oriented, food service business like this. Hai there Hainan Kitchen! I always love welcoming new restaurants with a different twist on classics. Their main dish is Hainanese Chicken but I have to say it's not like the typical super smooth, slippery marinated chicken I'm used to when I think of Hainanese chicken. Their chicken is still top-notch with it being tender but it's not a silky smooth texture - it's just tender chicken. Regardless, the flavours are there to create that harmonious and delicious Hainanese taste. Dipping the chicken that's already been bathing in the sweet soy sauce into the crisp spicy chili sauce and the savoury garlic/green onion sauce is a perfect combination! Then add in the not too oily rice that has been steamed in the chicken broth and it's protein and carb deliciousness! The salad that came with it was crisp and the dressing was a sweet, tangy compliment. The seating area is clean and simple. The menu is straight-forward and not overwhelming - with other menu items like a beef curry and specialty drinks like HK Style drinks like milk tea and lemon tea. Free parking at the complex. As the name says this is a specialty restaurant for Hainanese Chicken, recently opened, simple decor and its set up is like a food fair stall; you order and pay and pick up for either take out or eat in. Tried their Chicken and Curry Beef, the Chicken is average. The Chili and Green Onion/Ginger sauce is not bad. Chicken is boneless, tender. The Chicken Rice pilaf was done just right; flavourful and not oily! The other dish is Curry but there is not a hint of curry spice in the dish! This is more like Beef Ragout/Stew, if that's what it really is then it's good, but it's supposed to be Curry Beef!? Kitchen service is slow as there is only one staff, plus the cashier, as I was waiting for my order more and more customers arrive I can clearly see that the kitchen is overwhelmed! Hope they will have more staff so that they won't have customers waiting for too long, as the place is set up as a fast food joint! This restaurant has a very small menu which makes ordering fairly straight forward. I really like hainanese chicken so I made it a point to try this place when I was in Richmond. My date ordered the beef brisket curry. Food is served food court style. The chicken was good. The chicken rice was alright. I was expecting the rice to be more aromatic, oily and flavourful. The sauces were great. The salad was average. The lemon honey drink tasted as expected. I tried a bite of the beef brisket. The beef was tender and flavourful with a strong coconut milk undertone. My main complaint is that they can be a bit more environmentally friendly by using less disposable items. Everything is geared towards take out style. The restaurant accepts credit card which is a plus. There is ample plaza parking available. They should also try to clean their restrooms daily as I only used the restroom to wash my hands. I can tell by looking at the sink and toilet, it has not been cleaned in weeks. There was no paper towels to dry hands. It is probably a good idea to skip the restroom unless you desperately need to use it. read more

Little to my surprise, the restaurant layout was more like a fast food restaurant, although bright and comfortable. There were only three main courses on the menu - sorry to those who don't eat beef or chicken. You would have to order at the cashier, take a number, and take your food at the counter. They serve their food in disposable container (not very environmentally friendly).... Any way, let's move on to the food - Hainan Chicken - average - I've had better. Flavour of the chicken rice and the chicken itself was quite weak. Portion size of the half chicken is good enough to share (it comes with two portions of rice). I mixed all three sauces at the end as instructed by the cartoons on the wall and it's not bad. The milk tea is ok. It's a bit sweet at first but once you let the ice melt a little, it's not bad. We ordered a half chicken (~$16), which came with rice and salad enough to share between two people. Price was reasonable given the amount of food we got, however, the chicken didn't taste like Hainanese chicken. It tasted like chicken with a soy sauce. Hainanese chicken is usually very soft with almost a "slippery" texture. Texture of the chicken here is more firm. It also doesn't have that aroma other Hainanese chicken I've tried has. Although we ordered a half chicken, the meat was all chicken breast (not bone in). I don't think I'll be back because although price is right, the meal wasn't memorable. read more

The chicken was bland and the accompanying sauces did not help. White meat was dry and overall the chicken meat lacked flavor. Rice was just acceptable. Curry brisket was tough and hard to chew. The entire meal was unforgettable. Decor is too casual and seems more like a food court than restaurant. Maybe that's their intention. Space was also not kept clean, especially the entrance area (needs sweeping). Service is lacking and yet customers are expected to tip when dining in. Bad experience across all metrics. Amazing Hainanese chicken. Deboned too, which is so convenient. The chicken flavoured rice is soft, fluffy (not mushy), and so flavourful. The condiments are the best part. There's the usual ginger onion sauce and sweet chili sauce, but they also make this green onion pesto like sauce that's so addictive. Tastes like everything is homemade. Full chicken rice is only $30, which is huge value for the quality. You get a full deboned chicken, two boxes of rice (choice of regular or chicken rice), and the three condiments. read more

My chicken is a bit over cooked, beef is somehow over cooked (?) as there are parts that are solid as rock, could not chew or swallow at all. Not too flavorable as well. Brought the beef up to express our concern, but staff explained it is because they baked the beef so that's why they are rock hard (!). No apology. I also ordered iced lemon tea, size is decent for $3, not sweet at all so it would be nice for those people who don't like sweet drinks. This is to rate how bad their customer service is. They are open at 11am with the door unlocked and when I walked in at 11:06am the lady in the kitchen yelled at me saying that they are not open (literally yelling, sounding like she wanted me to F off). I asked when they will be open since the business hour is 11am and the door is unlocked with lights on but she said she does not know has to wait for the cashier so I left a message saying that she didn't have to be that rude to a customer. There is bubble waffle across from the parking lot that also offers Hainanese chicken so I figured they didn't want my business. Also, I didn't know if they lady was cutting all the frozen chickens (on the metal table)when I went in and saw the kitchen door right open. Went in at 8:15pm ordered 1 whole hainan chicken and beef curry. Beef curry was sold out, got chicken but need they to thaw out the chicken. Waited 30 min for our chicken. Was dry and tasteless, chicken oil rice was not fully cooked as well. Ended up tossing out the whole thing, will not come back. read more

Great Hainan chicken at an affordable price. I've had many Hainan chicken dishes in Richmond and I would put this in my top 3. This place serves only 2 dishes: Hainan chicken and Singaporean-style chicken/beef curry. I mainly come here for the Hainan chicken, however. Each serving of the Hainan chicken dish comes with your choice of plain white rice or flavourful yellow rice, salad, the usual dipping sauces, and either a quarter, half, or whole bird. They also serve half the chicken as white meat and the other half as dark meat. When I first tried the chicken, I expected the white meat to be dry, but to my surprise it was actually juicy. Normally, I would prefer dark meat because it is always tender and flavourful, but this restaurant makes white meat Hainan chicken extremely satisfying. The restaurant is set up mainly as a fast food joint, so don't expect staff to serve you while you're seated. However, do expect to enjoy some great food dining-in or taking-out! read more
