Unfortunately I think we simply ordered the wrong thing.... we went for a cup size of the limited edition "Yuzu" Banan specialty creation. For $10 it was on the smaller side (good for 2 less hungry people to share). But the flavors did not meld well. The yuzu was extremely sharp and pithy, with strong bitter undertones that did not go well with the already subtle and not sweet banana. The coconut whip, mochi, and strawberries were all sweet elements intended to help offset this but they didn't do much to help. I think the chocolate or peanut butter creations would have offered richer and sweeter pairings so I'll try that next time. We could barely finish this one, unfortunately. read more

So good! Banan has locations in Waikiki and Kaimuki, with the Waikiki location being a window and the Kaimuki location being a small shop. There is some seating outside but not much. Especially after going to the beach or being outside for a while, Banan has always been a solid option. This time, we went to the Kaimuki location. There was not a line, which there is sometimes. However, there were some people eating outside. The service was quick and the people working seemed nice and relaxed. We got a cup with acai, honey, granola, and strawberries. We also got the Chunkadelic bowl, which is a favorite of mine. I love the mac nut honey butter. The bowl always feels pretty decent in size and will either leave me full or last for another meal or snack. We felt the cup was a good size as well and not overwhelming. The acai was good and the fruits were pretty sweet. The chunkadelic was yummy and has been consistently good. We will definitely be back when our next Banan craving hits! read more

I have had Banan's soft serve in the past... it's made out of banana... so, it's dairy-free! Past locations include the University of Hawaii area and Kahala Mall. Those two stores closed. A cute little spot accessible by street parking (if you can get it) or the little parking lot just a couple hundred feet away in between the buildings. I love that it's a nice sweet treat without making you feel super unhealthy. The range of flavors is diverse and I think there's something for everyone. Went to Banan the other week to pick up a variety of cups/bowls. I always pick up my usual Locals Only (toppings of mac nut honey butter, papaya, pineapple, sliced bananas, and honey) for myself. Before the girl started to make my bowl, I did ask her about the toppings because when my other half previously picked up a bowl for me it had a tartness that I did not like. When she read off the list of toppings, they swapped out the honey with lilikoi. The old-time workers know it's honey and the newbies will follow the list posted and put the lilikoi. She kindly went with the original recipe and swapped out the lilikoi with honey for me. I found a menu from the old Banan University location that shows the original toppings. I will have to say that my experience here has been 99% positive. Tried many times to attach photo but it just wouldn't work. read more

I'll definitely check out their location in the Bay Area to compare with. Parking in the area is difficult, but there's a paid lot within a couple blocks. The storefront is really small, it can really only fit one group to order at a time, and there's two benches out in the front for seating. We got three different flavors: açaí, matcha, and chocolate. They all tasted like banana, there's no doubt about it! The açaí had the strongest flavor compared to the others. The matcha has a beautiful green color but you really couldn't discern the matcha flavor from the bananas unfortunately. Banan is my absolute FAVORITE! I've been a devotee since the original food truck on Monserrat and I'm thrilled there's one right in Kaimuki now. The product is just bananas- so delicious and nutritious and local to boot! They're always coming up with amazing new flavors and my currrent fave is the matcha, especially in the Matcha mood sundae. The service is always wonderful too- I'm convinced they only hire the kindest people on island. It's such a great vibe and my son and I go at least once a week. I've been going to Banan since they opened near UH like 10 years ago?! Omg wow I'm getting old. Anyway... they recently opened in kaimuki near sprout! They started off with just banana flavor and have increased the flavors on the menu to include some unique options for a healthy frozen treat. I was excited to see the matcha float on the menu. I like strawberry and matcha so what would I not like about a strawberry banana in matcha float!!? There were a few other people enjoying their banan outside the store, but there was no line and a very short wait for my order. It was a quick process: order at the cash register, pay and wait for my beautiful float to be made. The girl working the store was nice and smiley. It's nice visiting a business where the workers seem to like their jobs. The float was a little pricey, but kind of expected. It wasn't too sweet and I liked the strawberry and matcha combination. Ok... so I absolutely love Banan. Been taking my family there for maybe the past 8-10 years , since Monserrat was open. Been to all the locations and it's our go to "treat " spot. I so want to give you all 5 stars but right now I just cannot. Even over my disappointment with consistency , I will still keep going back. We now frequent the Kaimuki location. Seriously over the last several months the quantity given (for all sizes) keeps getting smaller & smaller. My husband's bowl looked like half the size than the picture and my son's cup size was the same amount as little sis keiki cup. Let me just say, back in the day, the bowls were so big I could share one with 2 of my kids. The flavors lately don't seem to be consistent either. We eat Banan more often than we should, so I know. I did mention it a few times, the worker said something about the mix. It wasn't horrible, but not the same, and noticeable to me. I also just read some comment reply about "creation or custom pricing" What's that? Because now we spend quite a bit more adding in our own topping, because we're not into the set creations on the menu. AMAZING!!!! THE UNIVERSE HAS LISTENED, and opened up a location walking distance from where we live!! I love the Waikiki Shack location, as you can eat your Banan on the beach, but it was always a pain to get to since parking is just annoying in Waikiki. I can literally eat this everyday. The Chunkadelic is hands down the best. The macadamia nut butter is definitely the star. They had a seasonal Black Sesame flavor that was also really delicious, but just be aware that it turns your mouth something like from a horror movie LOL. I love how simple this location is. Portions are generous, quality is fresh AF. The workers are very welcoming always, and I am so happy that Kaimuki now has one of my favorite places. TL:DR - Great flavor, refreshing on a hot day, now easier to get to. Banan has humble beginnings as a food truck next to a Coffee Bean and Tea Leaf. Since then, they've grown into a juggernaut within the food/snack scene in Honolulu. What Banan is, is mushed up bananas turned into a soft serve texture. (They have other flavors other than banana, but that's what they started out as.) This banana soft serve is then paired with different local toppings ranging from macadamia nut butter, coconut milk whip cream, honey, chocolate, granola, etc. You can get it in 3 sizes: kids, cup, and bowl. They also offer a version of it in a papaya if that's your jam. There are a couple locations that you can visit, but for the longest time they were hard to get to if you weren't staying in Waikiki, BUT NOW, there's one readily accessible. This has been a game changer. Located next to the Crack Seed Store just off of Waialae, in a little nook of a space is Banan. It's pretty much a counter. I don't think many people know about this place yet, because the last 3 times we've gone we were the only ones there. But give it time and you'll start to find yourself waiting in line more. I went with the chunkadelic: banana soft serve, mac butter, chocolate, and honey. Maybe it's because it's been a couple of months since I had this, or maybe because it's actually better, but the Kaimuki Banan killed it. The portions were generous, the flavor and textures were on point, and it was just the perfect pick me up. I'll probably be visiting this Banan from now on, due to the close proximity and the parking lot in the back. Overall, I'm so happy that Banan opened up a Kaimuki location. When we first walked in we realized there are no seats, but there were two benches the store next to this. I think they both related somehow so they are okay for us to sit at their benches. I highly recommend check out Bead it, which is right next to Banan, and custom made some jewelry. Then in the meantime you can go to banan and enjoy the ice cream while you wait. Apparently their ice cream were made with banana and no added sugar. My friend and I shared the matcha and strawberry and uncle mango. We both like the mango one more, it tasted more refreshing. And they have many sides for one cup of ice cream, like coconut chips, dragonfruits, mango and strawberries. The matcha tasted like oat milk more than matcha, so that one was okay.
