The quest for great Chinese Food in the Rogue Valley continues...but the detours along the way are proving delicious. When you hear that a restaurant is "Asian Fusion" what comes to mind? For me it is a certainty that this restaurant will NOT be Chinese Food. I was once again proven right in my assumption when my wife and I dined at Bambu in Medford today for lunch. If you remember in my last post recommending the Mongolian Beef at Umami in Ashland Plaza, someone commented on that thread that I should try Bambu; Actually, several people suggested several places, and I'd eaten at most of them and they were decidedly not Chinese Food. Imagine my surprise today when we showed up at Bambu and the first thing I notice is Asian Fusion on the sign and VERY surprisingly a ¾ full restaurant. That's highly unusual in my quest experience, so much so that I'd given up pre-judging a place based on its lunchtime crowd. Even MORE surprising, both of the Asian people who live in Southern Oregon were eating there today. This must be the real deal! Sadly, it is not. Happily the food was FANTASTIC, not Chinese Food, but really delicious. We started out with a Dim Sum appetizer that while limited in selections, the three items in it where spot on Dimlicious and I'd go there again just for that. Side note, best Dim Sum in the Rogue Valley? My wife had garlic chicken legs and spring rolls off the lunch combo menu, they were both very tasty. I had a special beef dish they were serving that day and it was sweet and tangy and a little spicy with peanuts on top. So, you can see, not classic Chinese but I can't wait to go back and eat my way through the rest of the menu. They have several promising Chinese Food hopefuls on the menu including Stir Fried Green Beans, Cashew Chicken, Sweet & Sour Prawns, Garlic Pork and others. Another plus is that while the address is Medord it's really close Medford. Just passed the Home Depot exit around and over the hill a little to the first strip mall and you're there. Close enough for take out to Ashland in my opinion. Give it a shot, you won't be disappointed. One last thing, they kept walking by with a particular dish that we couldn't quite make out, but it went by at least three times. When we asked, low and behold it was potato chips cut in what looked like a really thin waffled style. Come to find out they are only listed on their take out menu but they were a big hit in house at lunch today. read more

Everything about this restaurant is 5 stars to us. The food is DELICIOUS and creative, the ambiance is relaxing, the servers are always polite, the wine list is extensive and well sourced, honestly can't say enough great things about it. LOVE the Siam seven flavored beef, the Cantonese salmon, the chicken katsu is a yummy staple and of course - TIGER ROLLS - best version we've had anywhere. We always try to go out to new restaurants but always wind up at Bambu...like 3-4 times a week if we can. For anyone complaining about food not coming out at the same time as their table mates - that's called fresh. If you want all your food at the exact same time go back to Olive Garden or get over yourselves, you're not the only table in any given restaurant. read more

My daughter took me to this beautiful restaurant in a shopping center. The outside patio felt like an oasis with fountains and gorgeous pots of flowers everywhere. Service was enthusiastic. The food not so much. We ordered the spring rolls and they were very good. The vegetable pad Thai didn't come close to anything I ever had before. It had a very strange flavor and the noodles were like thin strands of spaghetti. I will probably give it another try because of the fabulous ambiance. Went back on 5/2 and it was so much better! Worst chicken coconut soup I have ever had. My mom went with her friend and brought it home for me. I had to put it on the stove and re-season it because it had no flavor. It was unbelievably creamy to the point where it sat lopsided in my bowl even before I tried to fix it. This is the second time I have had food from this restaurant and both times have been just as bad. You can get better Asian food in The Valley, don't settle for this. Some of the best food I've ever had in my life! They are pretty expensive, but the quality is top notch. It can be hard to get a table if you walk in, so making a reservation is really recommended. Revelations, things I thought not possible are happening right now in the tiny neighborhood of east Medford. Flavors I thought inconceivable, ideas that you or I would laugh, taste. Who wants to expect taste, instead wow your senses into something that will shame yourself for having that premonition that you're some expert, perhaps even knowing what your taste buds want. All my life I've been told what flavors go with what, as a society, we're taught to maintain, accept. Last night and on a previous visit earlier this year I noticed the quality of food and service at Bambu has slipped. The cashew vegetable chicken dish had so much sauce covering the bottom of the dish that when rice was added (It comes in a separate bowl.), it soaked up the sauce and fell apart, plus I don't like sauce-soaked rice. The 1/2 inch cubes of chicken were VERY firm and the amount wast not generous as compared to the chicken and noodle dish that is covered by moist, tender slices of chicken. None of the staff offered refills of our drinks and we waited a long time for the check. read more

I ordered to go Pad Thai with tofu from Bambu yesterday and it went something like this. I called my order in at 5:55pm and the friendly person answering the phone listened to everything I requested, even explaining the spice level in detail. I was told my order would be ready at 6:30pm and the total bill was $18.85. I called back to verify that I wasn't being charged $5 extra just for tofu (as I saw from a couple of yelp reviews). The woman patiently explained that there is a 5% to go charge and that the dinner portion is in fact $17.95. I wasn't totally surprised at the price so I agreed, but feel like the extra charge should be explained when ordering. There are signs in front of the restaurant asking that they be reserved for to go orderers, but no instructions were given regarding waiting in the car so I decided to go inside to pay for my food right at 6:30pm. The dining room was dimly lit and looked like a nice place for a good dinner. They appeared to be very busy - I overheard them telling a guest that they're serving at half capacity and accepting reservations in advance. After paying, I was told that my food wasn't ready yet. I waited in my car and they brought it out to me at 6:44pm. The order comes with an extra side of rice, that I feel like is not necessary. I ordered a spice level of 3/4 and thought they did a good job of balancing the spice. I was not a fan of the Pad Thai flavor. I thought it tasted more like a soy sauce noodle stir fry instead of the standard Pad Thai flavors I'm always looking for. I would give Bambu another try, but would not order the Pad Thai and I feel like they could do a better job of explaining their processes and charges up front to cause less confusion. read more

First of all, change your menu. The same exact menu for like ten years or more. I do appreciate this place existing but I quit going here as often after the same boring menu year after year. Also they put dairy in their coconut cream and pretty much everything with coconut milk which doesn't make any sense. It might be my diet and how I can't eat foods that cause inflammation or dairy and almost everything causes inflammation or has dairy here so it would be a good place for someone that can eat whatever they want. It's just disappointing considering how the restaurants majorly lack in Medford in quantity and quality. There are only a handful or less of nice places to eat and this one is right by my house. So it's just ughhh annoying. Do better, change your menu. Dont put dairy in items that can be used with coconut milk. read more

Our friends Sue and Bill recommended this place. It's right next to Honeysuckle Café, where we had brunch Wednesday. We decided to try it for dinner last night and Sue strongly recommended we make reservations so I did, for 5:45 so we'd have plenty of time to make it back to Ashland for our 8:00 play. We arrived about 10 minutes early and were seated right away. We sat inside, though the patio is protected by umbrellas and is large and attractive, surrounded by bamboo and a metal fence. Out of window by our table I could see a lovely, rustic metal fountain. Our server was Zach and he reeled off the specials w/ aplomb. There were several of them, mostly seafood, one beef, in addition to the regular menu. He didn't give us the prices so I asked and they were reasonable, $30-32. The appetizer special was lobster pot stickers, 6 to an order for $15.95. We ordered those. The special that interested Nina was a basil crusted Alaskan halibut w/ baby bok choy, cherry tomatoes and I forget what else topped w/ a coconut curry sauce. What interested me was a special called Javanese Salmon, Columbia River salmon topped w/ a soy, chili sauce served w/ asparagus and shiitaki mushrooms. I asked for the sauce on the side because I wasn't sure how spicy it would be. We stayed w/ water to drink. The pot stickers arrived and they were fabulous. They were popular as well. The couple at the table next to us had them, as did the people at the table next to them. By about 7:15 they had run out of them. After a wait we were brought a bowl of fragrant rice. Then we waited and waited and waited. Eventually Zach came over to report that Nina's halibut had been given away as a to-go order and that more was being made. He took away the bowl of rice that had grown cold. Nina reminded him that we had a play in Ashland. Our dishes did arrive, along w/ another bowl of rice, and they were fabulous, well worth the wait. The pieces of fish were generous and were beautifully cooked. The bite I had of Nina's halibut was sumptuous. My salmon and the accompanying vegetables were marvelous and I was glad I had the sauce on the side because I didn't like it that much and the fish was lovely on its own Zach came over and offered us a complimentary dessert to make up for the wait. We couldn't decide between a creme brulee and a sorbet, so he gave us a creme brulee and one scoop of the sorbet, both of which were delicious. Nina and I talked about bringing the guys here when we return in October. Then I saw the sign in the bathroom stating that as of July they would no longer be open on Saturdays and Sundays to allow their staff and them to spend more time w/ their families, so unless we make it to the area in time for dinner Friday night that's unlikely to happen. We will discuss as the time gets closer. For the record, we made it back to Ashland in time to find parking and make it to the play. read more

You can't just douse ground chicken (?!) and noodles in lime juice, top with a fistful of crushed peanuts and call it pad Thai. Unless you're Bambu, in which case you charge $16 for it. Also, who uses ground chicken? I'm still not sure if I'm more annoyed by the wild overpricing or the aggressive bitter lime flavor. Either way, I am filled with despair that Erawan isn't open on Mondays, because then I could have avoided this tragedy. read more

Watched the next people at that table order and start eating before we even got our order. The waitress forgot to put our order in. That happens, but we got no acknowledgement or apologies. I recently decided to try this place due to high ratings and people saying that their foods is good. I got their pad Thai, something that I normally get from Asian restaurant but it was awful. Compared to other places this place has the worst Pad Thai out of all of them. There is a pool of sauce, and just overall not that good in my opinion. *Follow up* Well we decided to try again after our last few visits have been increasingly more and more off-putting. We got dressed up, drove down very early on a Saturday night to get a table (or even sit at the bar which has always worked for us). Only to find out this time and I'm not kidding THEY ARE NOW CLOSED ON SATURDAY NIGHTS. Yes a restaurant purposely choosing to be closed on Saturday nights. We called the following Monday to find out if it was just a special occasion and they said they now close everything down, every Saturday. Not sure if ownership changed or what has led to this hilariously bad decision but we were disappointed to say the least again, just this time for a brand new reason. My husband took me here for my birthday dinner. It's always been a favorite of ours. We were disappointed to be seated at a sticky, dirty table. When I asked to have it cleaned, I was left with a wet table instead. Food was delicious as always! But - the couple that was seated beside us left, their table was cleaned but their napkins were both left on the floor and never picked up. Bambu is still one of our favorite restaurants but I hope they will take a closer look at their cleanliness --it's important for a diner to be confident their food was prepared in a clean environment. read more

I waited at the hostess stand 10 minutes before I became tired of being ignored and left. No one ever greeted or seated me. The kitchen staff glanced at me then went back to chatting with each other. A waitress passing a nearby table looked at me then ignored me. I hope the food is better than the staff. We had tried this place a few years ago and Loved it . Went a second time and felt like a red headed step child. After sufficient time had gone by for us to forget a less than exciting experience we went again last night. We made reservations and knew it would be better this time, they even knew we were coming! When we walked in the restaurant the hostess station was deserted and we did not see anyone for a few minutes. The shabbily dresses hostess finally showed up offering us water of all things instead of seating us in a the less than crowded restaurant. She told us the people where leaving and when our table was finally ready we noticed that no one had left! We were finally seated in the middle of the the room which is very uncomfortable and hoped our location would improve the responsiveness of the staff. The second hostess seemed much better when she noticed an empty table next to us and offered a move to a table suitable for dinners that include many plates. For more than 20 minutes we were walked by and ignored. We did not even get eye contact from a single server in the restaurant. There seemed to be more staff than customers. And we still had not been offered a chance to make a drink order. When the server finally arrived I was flabbergasted when she said she would be back soon instead of offering us any service! We did not see her again for 10 minutes. We finally got our order in and thought we were going to get this dinner on track. Not so! Again after waiting far to long we grabbed the second hostess and told her we still did not have drinks and she went and started them. I noticed our server saw her and thanked her since she had obviously forgotten. I know this is a lot to happen even before the dinner came. The dinner was adequate with mostly fish as choices. The tables are to small for the oversize plates they use trying to make you think the portions are much larger than they are. There is nothing unique or special about the food. We never saw the waitress again until she brought our ticket. We were handled by a bus boy that left his personality at home. We were never asked if we were happy with our meal, our drinks were never refreshed and we sat for 10 minutes stacking our own dirty dishes hoping someone would notice we were ready to leave. We spent 100.00 dollars for 2 and did not even order alcohol or dessert. The restaurant is worn, dark and dingy and showing signs of use with lack of attention to detail. There are far too may eateries that deserve my money to ever go back to this place. It's time management took a hard look at their reviews, menu, staff, and restaurant if they hope to keep a clientele worth keeping! read more

This place rocks!!! When we first walked in the place looked so fancy I was concerned that my t-shirt and jeans would be too informal. Pretty quickly we were asked very cheerfully if we had a reservation. That question concerned me that we wouldn't get to eat here. They were however quite happy to seat us at the bar. My attire concerns were abated. My husband and I started with 3 appetizers. We got the Tiger Roll that was similar to a crab Rangoon filling in a thin fried wrapper like a fried spring roll. It was delicious and served with house made chili sauce. Our second was the crab cake dish. It was good although not as wonderful as the aforementioned Tiger Roll. Our third app was from the specials, a steamed pot-sticker in a wonderfully mild broth with sesame oil. I can't remember the name of the dish, but it was probably the best dish of our meal. Next course was salad. We had the Thai Lime Salad with steak. It came with a mango chutney on the side. We tried it with a squeeze of the lime that was on the side of the plate. My husband and I both thought once the chutney was evenly distributed it tasted way better. The steak was perfectly pink in the center and seared on the outside. For dinner we had the Curry Basil Salmon. The curry sauce was lovely. It balanced with the salmon very nicely! We got the fried banana roll desert. It was yummy but there was more chocolate and caramel sauce than was necessary. The banana would have stood alone nicely. It definitely wasn't our favorite desert. Our waitress was very nice and so were all of the servers. Since we were sitting at the bar we had a great view of the chefs at work. They were mesmerizing to watch!! They were all very professional and ran the place like a well-oiled machine!! We found a wonderful place in Medford. If we are through Medford again we will surely stop in. read more

I've been here twice; both times for business meetings. It would get a solid 3.5 if half stars were an option. They have a large menu with a variety of choices (poultry, meat, veggie) spanning many different cooking styles. The first time there, I had the beef salad and it was pretty tasty, a little bit less flavorful than I have had at traditional Vietnamese restaurants, but still quality. The cucumber salad was very refreshing. The second time, I had a rice dish and I asked them to make it a spicy curry rice dish which was a little different than how they listed it on the menu; and they were happy to do it. Their Spicy 5 was more like a 3.5. I enjoyed my meal here, as did my business companions. It is a bit on the spendy side. The service is good but felt a bit rushed. It can be a little noisy. I would go back, it's a good place with lots of options for varied palates. read more

Been here a few times, it seems each time the experience gets worse and worse. Made dinner reservations at 1710 as their hours say they open at 5. Get there and there are many tables already with food!!! Many on their main or final course. Now how does that work. I have worked in kitchens and there is no way, unless they actualy open at 430, or let patrons in early. Glad I made reservations as it started filling up, and fast. There have been times when i did not make a reservation, and had to sit there for over an hour waiting for tables to clear/people to leave. Was offered water, yet a quarter of my glass ended up on the table, and the busser/hostess made no notice, as she did not say anything. So I wiped it up [aka smeared it around table with non absorbent table linens they offer] until it sort of dried. Got to have wet linen all through dinner. Server arrived and read through specials so fast it was difficult to remember everything (this night they offered 5, typically have only had 3). Good thing we knew what we wanted. Siam beef and pistachio crusted halibut. Beef was amazing. Cooked perfectly, not rubbery nor chewy. Sauteed vegetables had the perfect amount of char on them. The fish however; ... Fish itself was a beautifully sized portion, and had a good amount ot thickness to it, not some flat pounded out piece of fish made to look larger. The sauce was NOT good. I suppose it was meant to be a creamy, coconutty enhancement to the vegetables and halibut, but it was not. It had a cloyingly thick feel to it, and at the same time tasted reminiscent of a hollandaise made from a packet. There was a slight coconut flavor, and at the same time a plastic undertone, like some coconut milk can acquire. I literally had to avoid the sauce as I feel it did not compliment the fish at all. This rotating fish special is usually really good!!! Sometimes it has pistachos, others macadamia nuts or hazelnuts. The sauce needs some attention, though. Also, this place needs a dress code. All in all, i will probably return, well, maybe. read more

For a Medford restaurant, I was pretty impressed with this place. It's just not the sort of thing I'd expect to find here, given how popular far less savory places such as Silver Dragon are. But boy, am I ever glad a restaurant like Bambu is around. It's Asian fusion, so it's not exactly the most authentic ethnic food around, but that's not why you're coming here. But it's still eons better than the doughy deep-fried mess over at Silver Dragon. I feel Bambu successfully accomplishes what places like Asian Grill attempt to do. I also appreciate the slightly more dressed-up feel of the place. It's not a formal dining restaurant, but at the same time. I don't expect some dude in waders and camo to come sauntering in either. The food is quite savory. We had a number of dishes, as we came in and both had three-item lunch specials (shortrib, teriyaki chicken skewer, potstickers) -- which were quite affordable at $10 each. As others have mentioned, it is a very small restaurant, so expect a wait if you come in during obvious busy hours. It's also not a huge space, so if you're a little claustrophobic, this may not be up your alley. Probably not the caliber of restaurant you'd think was four-star in Portland or San Francisco. If it were in a big city, it'd be a three, tops. But being this out-of-the-norm in Medford, and doing it well earns them the extra star. read more
