First of all the name of the restaurant has changed to China Modern. Since I found it on Yelp as…read moreShanghai Modern it was difficult to find. I called the restaurant to make sure they offered Peking Duck which they confirmed. When my order of Peking Duck came it was not good. The duck seemed like it was made then frozen then steamed or microwaved. The skin was loose and floppy not at all crispy. I didn't order Crispy Duck but Peking Duck is not supposed to come with loose and floppy skin. I complained and sent it back. I just ended up ordering cha shu bao instead. My husband ordered a Mapu Tofu. The food tasted fine but we both ended up needing a toilet before too long.

We…read morearrived in China Town a little later then we had planned around 10pm and started looking around to find a great spot. We came up to Shanghai Modern and after a quick glance of their giant menu (I mean literally giant it's huge and outside of the restaurant) this had to be the place we were going to go to. They had pretty much everything we were looking for. We sat down and the staff was quick to come check in on us. We of course had to start off with some Dim Sum and of course half a Peking Duck. For Dim Sum we got the Wonton In Garlic And Chilli Oil and the Signature Pork Xiao Long Bao (Soup Dumplings) The dumplings were fresh and amazing. I really could have kept them coming all night but there was more food that we had to get. The Peking Duck was also great. Crispy, juicy, and full of flavor. I was a little bummed that it was served with Chinese Pancakes and not Bao Buns but it was still amazing. Now to the main event as we got a lot... We went with the: Fried Chicken With Dried Chilli Spicy Szechuan Beef Broth Kung Po Chicken Shanghai Fried Noodles With Shredded Pork Crispy Chilli Shredded Beef Fried Chicken With Dried Chilli - This was tied for my favorite dish. It's always one of my go-tos. I sounds like it's just fried pieces of chicken with chili but it's so much more then that. Just so much flavor. It you have never had it it's a must. Crispy Chilli Shredded Beef - This was also tied for my favorite. I love a good crispy beef dish. The sauce was great and the beef was still so tender. Kung Po Chicken - This is just a classic that is always going to be good and is a crowd pleaser Shanghai Fried Noodles With Shredded Pork - Did you really get Chinese of you don't get noodles? Of course not. These noodles we so fresh and the sauce was great. We didn't even realize we were getting pork in it when we ordered so that was a nice surprise. Spicy Szechuan Beef Broth - This was for sure our wild card dish. The beef was great but this is a true Szechuan dish. You could tell by the fresh peppers and how peppery it was. If you're not ready if it that flavor blast is going to get you. We had an amazing time and of course meal at Shanghai Modern. If you are in London and want some amazing Chinese with all of the offerings this is the place to come to.

Prices are definitely a bit high for the portions. However, the food was really delicious, and it's hard to pick just one or two dishes that were the best. The pumpkin and mouli dumpling is unique and scrumptious for being a gourd. We also really liked the chicken and black truffle shui mai as well as sichuan style dumplings. For hot dishes, get the duck spring roll, black sesame prawn toast, and Singapore vermicelli with prawn and egg. (The people in the kitchen were speaking Chinese, so that's definitely a good sign, in my opinion!) Unfortunately, most of the dishes come with just three portions, so it's tough to share with 4 people, especially when all the dishes are so good. Oh, and how can I forget my Monkey Jump Over the Moon cocktail. It was definitely tropical and the largest volume - biggest bang for your buck when you're spending money on dim sum!

We also noticed that most of the guests that are eating here are very well dressed so, I must say that this place is considered somewhat, "high-end" or trendy. Food: I reserved the vegetarian tasting menu. It was very good. Each plate was tasty, but admittedly a little forgetful. I know I enjoyed my meal, but I could not tell you which dish was my favorite. Every thing was well plated and pleasing to the eye though. Service: Service was generally good. I was seated at the bar area, understandable as a solo reservation. However, given how the dishes came out, I didn't have enough space most of the time for the dishes. The servers and such were all nice and knowledgeable. They were trained well. My main server did stand uncomfortably close to me a few times to describe my meal. He also asked pointedly why I chose the vegetarian option that evening. He seemed bothered when I said it was because I was vegetarian. However, even with these minor details, it was still good service overall. TL;DR - a michelin take on Chinese food that was tasty with decent service.

I loved their bento boxes because you can do many variety of options and pick and choose as you wish. In my case I had all proteins and few vegetables. Our office has avocados and fruits so I didn't feel that I needed that extra layer of veggies. For 9 £, or under 12 bucks, one can get a whole lot more lunch than one would get, say from San Francisco. I also found the decor surprisingly pan Asia which is neat. This is one of the approachable places you could get by Westminster Abbey, and given how sad and limited the food choices are around here, I would give it a four star - simply it's within walking distance from work and it's what you'd expect from an Asian fusion restaurant.

So, we just decided to eat at places based on where we were at. Since we were around Westminster Abbey, I looked on Yelp and saw Firecracker. It was a few blocks down from where we were, but since I was planning on going to the Tesco Superstore later, it was actually on the way. We found the door to the restaurant and walked in. The restaurant was actually down the stairs. We walked downstairs and saw more than enough seating. The place was pretty clean, albeit a little darker than expected. Not good for the Yelper who likes to take pictures. LOL! We were greeted and seated promptly. They took our order and we waited for our food. While waiting for our food, we noticed there was a room next to us that had a karaoke party going on. Being the only Filipino on earth that doesn't do karaoke, this wasn't a big deal to me. I do, however, like watching people have fun doing karaoke and it looked like everyone was having a blast. They picked some really good karaoke songs (Living On A Prayer by Bon Jovi, anyone?). The food started coming out now. We started off with some Salt And Pepper Tofu. It came on a bed of veggies and was topped with fried garlic and slice peppers. We devoured everything. In fact, it might have been our favorite dish. For our main course, we essentially had a dim sum meal with some noodles throw in. We had Har Gau, Pork and Shrimp Siu Mai, Pork Belly Bao, Char Siu Bun, and Gyoza. We added a little bit more with noodles, corn soup, and Kai Lan with ginger sauce. The Pork Belly was super good and it probably wouldn't been better to order a few more. The other dim sum items were good, but living in the Bay Area, I've come accustomed to eating really good Chinese food. The noodles, soup, and Kai Lan were all good, too. The entire meal, as a whole, was extremely enjoyable. Service here is a great. We didn't have a regular waitress assigned to our table as a few people checked in on us. They were all great though. Being in London, of course they had an English accent. My daughter's loved it! They kept trying to copy them. I guess they channeled their inner Peppa Pig!

We waited about 20 mins to order but once we did, the buns came out right away which was nice. The kaya toast took an extra 15 mins but the timing actually worked out perfectly because we finished our buns right when it was ready. It's a small spot in Chinatown with a cool retro Hong Kong feel to it. There are a few tables inside but we got the 3 buns combo deal which is takeaway only, so we were just standing outside the shop eating our buns. Honestly it kind of adds to the experience. I got the pig bun, chicken bun, custard bun, and kaya toast. The chicken was easily my favorite, coconut curry filling with lemongrass that was super aromatic. I've never had anything like it in a steamed bun before and I'd get it again every time. The pig bun was solid but felt like something you could get at a regular dim sum spot, nothing that really set it apart. The custard bun was good but based on the menu photo I was expecting a much runnier filling and it didn't quite deliver on that. Kaya toast was a nice way to finish things off. Service is straightforward counter ordering. Nothing over the top but efficient and friendly. No complaints. Would I come back? Yeah, specifically for that chicken bun. I think next time I'd try the lamb and maybe one of the sides. A solid spot if you're in Chinatown and want something quick and satisfying.
