The food was a 4. The service was a 3, not exactly friendly but usually there when I needed them. The ambiance was a 3. The no alcohol surprise was unwelcome after a long day and I'm knocking them down a star for it (i.e., they no longer sell alcohol of any kind, including just beer and wine). Their dim sum here reminded me of home (: I felt that their dishes possessed the authentic Cantonese flavors and I had a great overall experience. I really enjoyed how their shrimp across various dim sums including the har gow 虾饺 and rice rolls 肠粉 were jumbo and juicy. Their other pastries were pretty solid, especially their taro ones 芋角. Its hard to find these in Hong Kong now but I love how theirs were super super crispy on the outside and the taro aroma was strong but not too overpowering. The meat filling was also well seasoned and I just very much appreciated how nicely done they were. Their char siu pastry 叉烧酥 was pretty decent; loved the fluffiness of the pastry but the sauce of their char siu filling was a little too sweet for my liking. Its original Baker Street branch and has other successful restaurants across the city. We came to the original location on a Sunday lunch with some friends living in London. The pro tips: come at 11am (when the restaurant opens) to avoid long wait. We kicked things off with a half portion of crispy aromatic roast duck. Just from picking up a piece with chopsticks, I could tell how amazingly juicy it was: the glorious dripping oozed out. To accompany, we ordered some Chinese greens in crispy garlic bits, which provided a healthy, crunchy counterpoint to the fatty, succulent meat. The dim sum are traditionally prepared, all came out steaming hot and fresh. The Har Gaw shrimp dumplings were bite sized, consistent chewy texture of the exterior with fresh crunchy prawns inside: heavenly. Food was ffffantastic! The pork dumplings were prob the best I've ever eaten and the chicken with vegetables I know sound zzzzzzzz but it too was so dang good. It wasn't overpowered with soy sauce or garlic but had a nuanced flavor that let the vegetables and chicken shine through. The veggies were crisp and omg. Just around the corner from our crib on Thayer Street. This was very good. For 87 squid we got some top notch food. Three dim sum dishes; Scallop Dumpling (3) Cheung Fun (4 pieces) Crispy Garlic Spring Rolls (4) We then upped our game to the a la carte Dover Sole in creamy corn sauce at $35 and added some Chinese Broccoli with garlic. Everything was super fresh and top notch. Good clean cooking. We got there at 11.10, ten mins after opening and got one of the last tables. When we left the line was down the street. All washed down with far too much Chinese Tea. We usually go to the ChinaTown places but this has now become our fave. Royal China Club is further down the street in a fancy room with fish tanks. I love everything about this place - authentic Hong Kong style dim sum, roast meats (char Siu and roast duck!!!), and attentive Cantonese speaking waiters. Please don't try to invite too many friends. I'd suggest 4. Then you can order a lot of dishes to share. Strangely, some dim sum dishes come in 3 pieces, so you have to fight. Order about 6 dim sum starters for 4 people, then 2-3 mains. Their duck comes in two types. PLEASE DO NOT order crispy duck. Or Peking duck. These are so 1990's. What is it with Baker Street? It's either a chain or ridiculously overpriced - either way the quality of food is pretty sub-standard. Popped in for a lunch meeting and had a variety of dim sum. It was ok - it was no Drunken Monkey. It seemed very popular for work lunches and a couple of large groups came in on an office lunchtime jolly. The service wasn't particularly friendly... in fact it was downright frosty. Brrr! I'm no vegetarian but I felt sorry for the fish and lobsters in the tank on the way in. They looked sad. I won't be hurrying back. I disagree with previous reviews, you CAN get fantastic Chinese cuisine in London. While I still prefer the dim sum at New World (because they do the traditional cart service), I also have come to like Royal China...mostly because it feels a little more luxurious and who doesn't want to be pampered every once in a while. A few tips on this location though: - Especially on weekends, be prepared to wait for quite a while. When you arrive at the restaurant, they will probably give you a number. (Don't be surprised if they call a number that is greater than yours - they probably had not the right table-size ready yet.) - Don't order too much at once, but I suggest you order in small batches. That way, you can order according to your group's appetite and you also won't have all 12 dishes at once. - Make sure you order the Xiao Long Bao, as they do them really well here. We've been going to Royal China for years, as their dim sum has been consistently good. There's usually a wait on the weekends, so that's always a good sign that this place is popular. During our most recent visit, we ordered all the usual dim sum fare which included our favorites; sticky rice in lotus leaf, shu mai, har gow, chicken feet, pork bao, etc. However, the reason why I took one star off is that a restaurant this size and this popular only has ONE high chair. Royal China is a family type restaurant as everything you eat is served family style. However, it's appalling that a restaurant like this only has a single high chair. Only until we were over halfway done, did the high chair become available and even though one of the workers was not happy that his colleague gave it to us. Please invest in more high chairs! Like the original on Queensway, this Royal China is one or two notches above all its competitors in SoHo (in terms of food, décor, and service); it's also more authentic than the Mich-* Chinese in London (like Hakkasan or Yauatcha). However, it is at least one notch below its branch in Singapore: the menu here is shorter, the dishes less refined, and there is much less innovation. Proof that standards for Chinese restaurants (Asian in general) are much higher in HK and Singapore than in London. Some classic dim sum dishes are surprisingly sub-par (eg. liao long bao, cheung fun); there is too much rice at the bottom of the FuKien fried rice below the thin layer of proteins and sauces; meatballs stuffed with crabmeat are excellent, though. What better food to eat after a night of partying (well actually two nights connected by day partying) than some solid dim sum? The wait on a Sunday at 1pm was insane, but after what seemed like an eternity, our group of 6 were finally ushered to a table that could have seated 12. Generally a long wait makes me think the place was a good choice, and Royal China was no exception. Tea and waters were served promptly and we asked our server if they could rapidly bring us a large plate of fried noodles while we perused the dim sum menu as we were all on the brink of starvation (2 slices of pizza the day before apparently does not sustain me very well...). They followed through and within 5 minutes there were delicious green onion & garlic noodles for the table. Royal China does not do traditional dim sum cart service, so you get to peruse the menu and pick your favorites rather than selecting items off of a cart and having no idea what you're about to consume. I started with some shrimp and scallion dumplings, which were amazing. The dumpling skin was the perfect amount of gooey but not chewy and the shrimp were barely cooked through, rendering some amazing texture. I followed with a hot & sour soup, which was decent, but nothing special. It had lots of veggies, tofu, egg, and meat in it, but the soup could have been a lot spicier. Lastly I went with the roasted pork buns, which were absolutely foodgasmic! Plenty of filling on the inside and hot steamy bun on the outside, I devoured all three in record time. I also tried some of the Chinese broccoli and the sweet & sour prawns one of my friends ordered. For dessert we ordered custard buns for everyone, which had a really light but lovely sweetness to them and finished off the meal well. For the bowl of soup, dumplings (3), buns (3), and tea my total came to be 15 GBP (including a 13% enforced service charge), which I found very reasonable for the quality of food that Royal China delivered. A nice place for a Chinese banquet in Marylebone. Great large tables that are perfect for big groups (10-12 people at a huge circle table with an equally huge lazy susan). The tables can be comically big if you have less than 10 people, which was the case for us last Friday night. The food was great---some of the best Chinese you can get in London. I suggest getting the set menus (minimum of 2 people). It's a bit pricey but you get tons of food---like 4 or 5 dishes. The aromatic duck pancakes were great as was this spicy shrimp stir-fry. So why not 5 stars, well the service is horrible...not very friendly or attentive. We sat down at 930, and they were very very eager to rush us out before closing time. It only took me a year to get here, but we finally stopped by this past Sunday morning. And I'm very happy we did! My mantra as always: go early. They open at 11 on Sunday. We were there about 11:30; it filled up within the next fifteen minutes, and by the time we left, the queue was easily thirty-people deep. Their classics are spot on. We tried our usuals: har gao, char siu bao, lo pak ko, etc. However, we tried a braised pork and noodle dish that was underseasoned. The pork was also cooked within an inch of its life -- very tough. Faves include the delicious sesame paper prawns, steamed prawn dumplings (plain version and its tasty sisters with chives or coriander). I always finish with the divine fluffy lotus seed bao! 10 portions of dim sum are ample for three adults. If you're really hungry include noodles in your order. So good (and popular amongst the expat mumbai Desi crowd) that they've even opened a branch in Mumbai, India! I've been here for dinner too and it's also very good, but a tad expensive. read more

What a superbly delightful place this is. Always packed at evenings so a tip is to call there for 6:30 for an almost guaranteed booking. The staff are respectful and humble as they are eager. If you had a game to see whether you could empty your teacup without someone filling it straight back up again... you would lose. Very reasonably priced for such high quality food. Soft shelled crab is a particular favourite of mine. They sort the food and environment, you have to the job of grabbing some good company. Literally imagine below average messy chinese food coming from a fancy pricy menu on the table. We ordered the roast duck which was over cooked Lemon chicken which was very dry and beyond sweet. Beef and ginger which was very smelly and chewy. And the starter which was fried squid was cold and again not fresh, we paid 150£ which was absolute waste of money and literally left the food on the table and will never come back or recommend that place. read more

Went again on Saturday and it was extremely average. I was also very hungover and this tends to do weird things to my tastebuds. That being said, my friend who was in a very lucid state backed me up re the mediocrity. I guess the dim sum here can be inconsistent which is weird because I feel that insofar as a category of food goes, this is something they should be able to replicate without minimal difficulty. I suspect it has to do with the fact that last time I came the place was packed so everything had to be continually made fresh.
