Sautéed king prawns with dried chilli and onion

Food was all really good! Pomegranate sweet and sour chicken was a standout and the wasabi prawn dumplings too. Service was excellent, plates were taken away immediately and tap water was refilled as we ate. The restaurant was quiet but the place was classy and clean.

Excellent variety of dim sum offered. Freshly prepared. Good service. Great quality food. Not very crowdwd on a Saturday afternoon. More upscale than Lonfon Chinatown dim sum

Beef with honey sauce

When we first walked in our expectations were high the place was beautiful and looked promising we were promptly told we only had 10 mins to order due to it being late so we quickly chose our dishes and than waited 45 min for our food. The food was ... to put it lightly not good . I ordered beef with chili sauce what I got was boiled beef swimming in oil water and chili it had no taste and was not good at all. My husband got the steak with honey sauce (I can't remember the names exactly ) and it tasted good but his portion was so small a toddler could eat it. We also got spring rolls that were so dry and tasteless a part of me feels because we came and hour before closing they rushed our food and that's why it was so bad but i won't be going back to find out

牛肉腸粉

While visiting London, I was trying to grab lunch before boarding train. This restaurant happened to be right next to the Paddington station and I figured, instead of getting a pastry from Costa why not try something different? I was a little hesitant before going in because their front door looks a whole lot like PF Cheng, one or those "Americanized Chinese food", but once I walked inside the restaurant I was consistently amazed by every little thing. 1. Fantastic decor, I haven't seen a bathroom this nice ever since I landed. 2. Great menu. Lots of food choices, beautiful menu design. 3. I was served with hot Chinese tea (菊普), not iced tap water. 4. The food price is wayyyyyyyyy lower than I expected it to be. 5. Food quality is super high. These people know how to do 腸粉 properly. I have very high bars for Chinese food and I'm seriously amazed by the food here as a Hong Kong local. Overall, I am extremely satisfied here. I don't understand how this restaurant isn't super packed, with the food quality they provide at this price point. I urge you to not be deceived by the Yelp 3 stars review and give this place a chance.

Soft shell crab

Husband loves the crispy duck at this place and since his office is nearby, they have had quite a few team lunches here. Last week, there were reindeer at Paddington Central, so he called to let us know - Yay Reindeer! and said we could grab quick lunch together. Pearl Liang was quite crowded and had a few Christmas parties on. We weren't too hungry, so we ordered half a crispy duck, the soft shell crab & spare ribs in paper. The crab was good, but I found the duck & the pancakes too dry. The spare ribs, weren't falling off the bone and were slightly harder/drier on the surface, not something I'd expect with this cooking technique. I'm not sure if the crowd was too much for them, but I found them quite expensive for the quality that we received. There are so many much better options a short stroll away in Queensway.

My first impressions of Pearl Liang were bad. After entering there wasn't any staff there to greet us, only a crowd of diners in the waiting area standing there confused like we were. In front of us were empty tables with dirty plates from previous diners. Never have I seen such an unorganised restaurant. They had the tables to seat people but no one to clean them or to greet the customer. They were obviously under staffed. After an 30mins wait with a reservation, a rude woman called us in and seated us. It took another 20mins to order. Strangely the kitchen seems to be coping as food were served quickly and the experience from then completely reversed We started with Tie Guan Yin tea in a cast iron teapot. Sadly as beautiful as it looks it wasn't good at keeping the heat in as it was designed to be placed on an open flame. Seafood crispy noodles These were cooked skilfully with a lovely balance of softer noodles and a crispier edge. The prawns were fresh and greens were stir fried perfectly. Flavours were nice too. Malaysian Kweitio with prawns. Full of wok energy, lovely seasoning and the noodles were cooked to al dente giving it good bite against the plump prawns. Delicious! Barbecued porky puff This had the perfect ratio of pastry to pork. The pork were juicy and generously filled. Flavours were perfect being sweet but not too sickly. Mince pork croquettes These came small but I really appreciate the thin pastry and the more even ratio of minced pork inside. It was greaseless too, crisp on the outside and doughy on the inside. Turnip cake These came deep fried, almost melting in my mouth. They were generous with the turnip, sausages and shrimps which gave it a nice depth of flavour Fried prawn ravioli with fruity salad Quite a forgettable dish. The pastrt was too thick masking the delicate texture of the prawn filling. The dip was almost impossible to use as there were too many large chunks of pineapple that got in the way. Scallop dumplings The filling was stuffed to the rim. The flavours were delicate allowing you to appreciate the freshness of the scallops. It was full of bounce, pastry al dente without being sticky. Tau mui canopy with prawn Such a refreshing dish. The earthiness of the pea shoot went well with the texture of the prawn. Pastry was perfect again, holding everything together. Yam croquette The pastry were slightly too thick and dense making it quite hard to appreciate the smoothness of the sweet yam inside. Fried dough Cheung fun A lovely addition. The rice pastry was thin and elastic. It's usually a bad idea to have it sitting in the dipping sauce but the dough inside still remained crisp and dry throughout. Char siu bun Quite disappointed. As milky, light and fluffy the bun was, there was too much of it so the taste of the char siu was somewhat lost. Shanghai dumplings Incredibly good! The pastry was al dente and held a good amount of stock that held well. The meat was fragrant and with a bit of the vinegar dip, the flavours were lifted and balanced. King's crabmeat with egg white dumpling Delightful! The addition of egg white added a nice touch of creaminess whilst the fish roe on top gave a burst of saltiness giving the dish depth and flavour. Chicken feet in black bean sauce Impressed with the size. Meat falling off the bone like it should be. They were also not as greasy as some I've had and were fatty enough to enjoy. Bamboo piths black bean sea bass roll Sadly I found the contrast of the hard crunchy bamboo far too much for the softer flakey seabass. The black bean was also too strong masking a lot of the delicate flavours of the fish itself. Bean pastry with prawn in abalone sauce One of the most generously filled ones I've had. The pastry was soft throughout being steamed perfectly. Lovely mix of textures inside and the sauce was lovely and thick to coat it. Prawn Cheung fun Thin layer of al dente rice pastry filled with the juiciest and sweetest of prawn. Topped over a lovely sweet soy dipping sauce. No complaints. Chrysanthemum custard bun. Best deep fried custard bun I've had. The outer layer was so thin it cracked as soon as you put your teeth into it to the softer fluffier bun. Inside was filled with creamy yolky custard that was so satisfyingly warm and sweet. Steamed sponge cake roll with custard yolk. These were so plush and soft it almost felt like they melted into a thick custard goo as soon as I ate it with a strong burst of thicker and sweeter custard flavour in between. Truly delightful. The quality of food really saved, what could have been a horrible experience. The service was somewhat worse than Chinatown. So the question is, does the higher prices justify itself here? And I can honestly say it does as nearly every dish was delicious, skilfully composed and with a touch of creativeness.

Well executed dim sum in a somewhat strange location. Service was great, and the service staff was on point on cleaning up empty steamer baskets and refilling the tea pot. Even though the restaurant was crowded on a Sunday, they weren't pushy about getting us out. Highlights included the fried chrysanthemum custard buns (炸菊花奶皇包) and the scallop siu mai (帶子燒賣). While this is one of the better places to get dim sum in London, I can't give it 5-stars since it feels like dim sum from the 90's. I'm a big fan of the "newer" dishes like XO daikon cake and the fusion pineapple bbq pork bun, which were nowhere to be found here. If, however, you're looking for your standard dim sum fare, Pearl Liang delivers.

Deep fried custard buns

We booked a table for 2 at this place during lunchtime as we wanted to have Dim Sum. We got there and got the impression this place wouldn't be authentic at all and started being very concerned. We sat, ordered our food, a very rude waitress took the order and then, after a little while, the food started arriving. What an amazing surprise it was. The food was trully incredible. The xiao long bao had a lot of soup inside and the deep fried custard buns were nothing like we've ever tasted before. The cheung fung was the best we ever had and the world literally became perfect for a while. The only reason this is a 4 star review is because the staff was really rude until we got to the bill part. The food makes it all worth it! Definitely a must!

Jorge M.

Warm welcome and immediate seating. Delicious Won Ton Soup. Pork dishes out of this world. Not too expensive but worth it to remove the Chinese food cravings.

Koji I.

Super. Yummy. This Chinese taste lightly flavoured, not so oily but healthy. Staffs are all attentive and kind.

Chris C.

The dim sum here is definitely above average, even well above average, compared to the ordinary dim sum in most Chinatown establishments (apart from Plum Valley). The atmosphere and decor is modern Asian and quite pleasant. Service is somewhat slow but then the place is very busy. The table management is somewhat flaky as we were made to wait even though there were empty tables all around. One would have thought reserved tables would be freed after 30 mins. Overall, I cannot say that this is the best dim sum in London, but it would be in the top 3 for sure, and price-wise, this place is absolutely fantastic value for money. If you want to come here, and I would recommend it highly, then please book in advance or else risk a long aimless wait.

Wasabi Har Gau (Prawn Dumplings)
Qype User (theku…)

I was surprised to see where Pearl Liang was all things considering. In Paddington Central and probably bustling during the week, over the weekend, its dark interior and the bright surroundings actually made me think this was shut. I still tried the doors and was pleasantly surprised stepping in to a much larger dining room than I thought it would hold. It's Chinese food with a twist, and although we didn't try anything from the normal menu, it's dim sum menu had plenty of different things to try including wasabi har gau (steamed prawn dumplings). Prices are, on average, more expensive than most other places in Chinatown and probably comparable to places like Royal China in Bayswater/Baker Street. Still, the quality is quite high and at average of £2.50, it's unlikely to break the bank. All dumplings tend to be decently sized and very flavourful. The cheung fun was fresh and the steamed dough literally melted in your mouth. The wasabi prawn dumplings impressed me the best with enough kick to leave a subtle taste, without too much of an overpowering sensation. Its bright green tint to the classic crystal white wrapper also makes a startling sight. I think they charged 12.5% service here, and although I'd go back if I was in the area, it wasn't anything to make a special trip out there for again.

Dim sum in London? Yes, absolutely! If you know where to go…read more.. Just like So Cal, the best Chinese restaurants in London are not located in Chinatown. Royal China is in the Hyde Park area, across from the northwest corner of the park (Princess Diana Memorial Playground). It is literally just steps away from two tube stations -- Queensway on the Central Line or Bayswater on the District or Circle Lines - so you can easily get there from almost anywhere in central London. The dim sum was legit and comparable to some of the top players in the San Gabriel Valley. I was particularly impressed by some of the dishes that are hard to find outside of Hong Kong. FRIED MINCED CUTTLEFISH BALLS: Even some of the best dim sum places in the SGV don't offer this or can't make it right. But this was perfectly 5 stars! The batter was light, and the minced cuttlefish filling had a good consistency and bounciness. The cuttlefish filling was mixed with some chopped water chestnuts which was the authentically correct Cantonese recipe. It was delicious and without even a hint of fishiness (GREAT!) PAPER WRAPPED PRAWNS WITH SESAME SEEDS: This is another bold and hard to find item. The wrapping tasted like bean curb wraps and it was deep fried. The prawn tasted fresh and again, without a hint of fishiness. A generous sprinkle of sesame seeds added the final touch to this delicious and creative dim sum plate. TURNIP CAKE: Pan-fried to a nice golden brown, these slices of turnip cakes were truly my cup of tea! Without the fishy dried shrimps that so many restaurants in the SGV tend to use, this dish was like a breadth of fresh air! Instead of dried shrimps, the cakes were mixed with small pieces of cured meat (Chinese sausage) that gave it a truly Cantonese flavor. The other dishes were good but not as impressive. SIU MAI was good and was comparable to those from an average SGV place. The black bean sauce of the PORK SPARERIBS was yummy but the dish was mostly bones with little meat. We also ordered a CHINESE SAUSAGE AND CHICKEN RICE which was topped with small pieces of thigh meat that were rather bland. The only flavor for the rice came from the Chinese sausage. Overall it was still a delightful and solid 4-star dim sum experience. I will definitely be back the next time I find myself in the streets of London.

I only discovered this place when I tried to have lunch at Hung Tao across the road only to be told that they were only serving a limited menu and to go across the road to their new restaurant. That is interesting in that Hung Tao has the atmosphere of a locals' cheap diner whereas Dim Sum Diner is probably aiming at a slightly more upmarket clientele with fresh clean tiles and primary colours though they do have canteen style bench seating Despite its name, the restaurant was only displaying the conventional menu on on the window outside, listing dishes as "Hung Tao @ Dim Sum Diner". Not sure if they're hedging their bets on the new venture However, nice to see that dim sum was available inside, otherwise the name would have been a bit redundant! The usual dim sum favourites are available though with some of them being given a novel twist. For example, the roast pork puffs are in a cylindrical shape rather than the usual triangles. I think this place is trying hard but is struggling to find its identity at the moment. I sense it's caught between wanting to be a traditional Chinese restaurant and a trendy dim sum joint. The food has potential but they have to make their minds up. My first tip would be to put a dim sum menu up in the window if your restaurant is named the Dim Sum Diner

With its red walls and pop art on the walls, it's a hip, cheerful place where you can select from a range of good quality dim sum and small Asian dishes as well as a couple of diner favourites made in a dim sum style (i.e. mini!) The Guinness crab meat dumpling was really lovely a house specialty, and the barbecued pork puff rolls were as nice if not better than the usual pork puffs you get in most other dim sum places. There are other more traditional offerings too. And the small dishes from noodles to rice dishes are pretty good value. The pricing is easy all dishes are £3.80 except sides which are £2.50. You can get in and out of there spending around £10-15 and leave pretty satisfied. It still in it's soft opening phase but I'll be back! I would highly recommend this place if you're looking for a fun, casual meal with mates. Go, go, go!!

My husband got the spicy vegetable dumplings, Sichuan chili oil vegetable dumping, tofu and miso soup as well as the spicy seitan and vegetable dumpling. I had the spicy seitan and vegetable dumpling, prawn and chives dumpling, orange and chicken dumpling and the potato and edamame pancakes. All the dumpling orders came in 3 dumplings. So 1 order is perfect for a person especially if you want to try a few dumplings. I LOVED the potato and edamame pancake. It was crispy on the outside, soft in the inside and the ginger sauce that came with it was the perfect compliment. The prawn dumpling was excellent but I didn't really care for the chicken and orange dumpling. It was a very strange taste that was not really orange but not sure what it was. The seitan was good but not as chewy as seitan usually is. Because if that, it was very mushy. My husband enjoyed his dumplings a lot but for both of us, they were a little too soft which ended up a bit mushy. Overall, recommend the place and will be back next time in our trip!

(The people in the kitchen were speaking Chinese, so that's definitely a good sign, in my opinion!) Unfortunately, most of the dishes come with just three portions, so it's tough to share with 4 people, especially when all the dishes are so good.
