Really yummy Chinese food and boba! Came here for a casual dinner and for a friend to try boba for the very first time. Service was friendly and quick and the food and boba drinks were very well priced and the portions were large and filing.
Bambao Asian Fusion offers a delightful blend of flavors, with an inviting atmosphere and exceptional customer service that made our visit a pleasant experience. Bonus it was in walking distance of our hotel. The vodka fruit tea is an absolute must-try--refreshing, flavorful, and perfectly balanced with a hint of zest that elevated the meal. I highly recommend giving them a try, especially if you're looking to explore a unique fusion of Asian-inspired dishes with a modern twist.
I kept passing this place and was excited to try it, so we stepped in to order a snack. I saw that the menu listed a few different types of Bao for $11, so I asked how many come in the order.... Just 1. $11 for a single bun? That's worse than NYC prices. My husband ordered the popcorn chicken which was pretty good, and we both ordered bubble tea. I got milk tea, he got passionfruit tea. We were the only customers in the shop, yet we waited a good 15 minutes for our tea because the guy behind the counter didn't know what he was doing and kept fumbling with the machine. You can see in my pics how the covers looked when he finally got it done. We were hoping that the tea was worth the wait, but I can honestly say that it was the worst bubble tea I've ever had. It just tasted like water, and maybe that's because it took so long to make the tea that all of the ice melted before we even got it? I'm glad that the other reviews were more positive, hopefully mine was a one off.
I was excited to try this place and it could've been better in my opinion. I got the crispy mushroom bao and the Xiao Long Bao. The crispy mushroom bao could've been so good. The mushrooms were hard to chew through. I feel like they could've been cooked through better. I did however LOVE the pickled veggies you got on the side. They were so good! The Xiao Long Bao was also just okay. There were little slits in the bao so none of the liquid stayed in the bao, which beats the whole purpose of the Xiao Long Bao.
This is a bit of a hole in the wall place but there's a decent sized space to sit upstairs. I ordered the general tso's chicken and the portion was decent. I have never seen or had an alcoholic boba drink before. It was very good but I didn't taste the alcohol really. This is a great place for takeout (I was eating in but they packaged it to go regardless) or lunch I would say.
This was ok. It was a bit too salty and they burnt my chicken. I got the lemon grass chicken Bao and tasted no lemon grass. Good service though. But that is about it.
The food was good, and the service was quick. My only complaint is that the place could use some cleaning. I ordered the Mongolian Beef combo. It was a bit salty, but I loved the crispness of the meat. The rice was also soft and sticky, just the way I like it. The food portion was more than I could finish. The crab rangoon could be better. The place looks small when you walk in, but there is more seating on the second floor. I want to come back and try their boozy bubble tea!
Sadly, my rating is so low primarily due to very poor customer service, as well as a refusal to describe ingredients in their food (I am GF due to celiac disease). I was really excited to try this place and am very disappointed. On their menu, they have GF labels next to certain items. However, the cashier informed me that they have a "cheat sheet" that they use, which does not match up with what is GF/not GF on their menu. For example, the menu in the store says the dumplings are GF, but their "cheat sheet" says wheat is in the ingredients and that they are not GF. (Weird, but I was still interested in ordering them.) To clear this up, I asked to simply look at the ingredient list on the back of the bag for the dumplings. The employee said, "sorry, the bag is in the freezer." I asked politely to review the ingredients, or if he would mind reviewing them, and he then sassily said, "sorry, I realized we are out of dumplings right now." (AKA, he did not want to look or was bothered by me asking.) I have no idea why he was so rude when I'm simply trying to make sure I can dine somewhere safely. Also, the weird inconsistencies with the menu and the "cheat sheet" labeling are a red flag. (I then went to a restaurant right across the street, had a question about a menu item, they quickly checked the ingredient list and it was cleared up and I was so appreciative. Not hard.)
3.5 stars. The prices are good and the menu has some fun items, but the food that I tried was just okay (still enjoyable and tasty overall). In my opinion, it doesn't really compare to Ekiben which remains my favorite but this place offers a bigger item with some different items. I got the Sambal honey fried chicken baos. I love that they give two in an order given that each one is smaller than Ekiben's both with the chicken size and the thickness/plumpness of the bao. The bao itself is thin and not as fluffy as I expected but still pretty good. The chicken was cooked well and crispy with a little hit of heat from the sambal, but the sandwich was a little dry without a sauce and I didn't taste much honey. I was disappointed with the slaw - it tasted like plain raw veggies bc it was not mixed well with the vinegar. I think the whole sandwich just needed more flavor and I wasn't getting it from the plain lettuce or accompanying slaw. I wouldn't have liked more sauce or a more acidic element. Crab Rangoons were pretty good. The filling is less sweet and more savory than I am used to - I think I prefer it to be sweeter and seasoned a bit differently but it was still good and my friends definitely liked it. I'm curious about their other flavor baos but overall underwhelmed by the honey sambal chicken.
I found this place by accident. I was smoking a cigar and walking to my hotel when I saw Bambao. The interior has positive messages though out: kindness in words creates confidence I want coffee first then, let's hug it out! Something very interesting I noticed on the menu, iced Vietnamese coffee with boba. Reading about this mash up is like healing words to me. Now I read they also make rice pudding? Here's kind words from the great artist Pete Townsheand: Love... reign o'er me The Vietnamese iced coffee, they made it really good! To have it with boba always makes me a happy pappy. The small rice pudding cup, another sweet treat that was fun to eat. I left feeling good, the iced coffee was made perfectly and the rice pudding cup was a nice dessert. Keep rockin' Bam!
This place is ok. I've had several items from their menu and have liked some better than others. This time I got their Kung Pao Chicken combo which was good and the side crab Rangoon which was fine as well. Do not get their spring rolls. It has zero flavor and the inside is bare with some veggies but is just mushy and flavorless. Also, their bubble tea is a hit or miss here as well. Their Thai iced tea is ok but I have liked their Taro which have all been good. The staff are nice. It is a decent quick Asian/Chinese food restaurant that's not too bad if you're craving Chinese food.
Bambao is a solid spot for decent bowls, baos and bubble tea. I like that there are lots of vegetarian options, and they can make almost anything on the menu with tofu instead of meat. They also have non-dairy options for the milk teas. All the entrees I've tried so far have been pretty good, and some of their bubble teas are also decent, although not as good as what you would get from an actual boba shop. The service is friendly, although they have made mistakes with my order a couple of times. There are 10 minute street parking spots nearby which makes picking up your order to-go much easier.
This review is a part of my Baltimore fried chicken sandwich championship of 32 sandwiches (round 1 vs Ekiben). The Honey Sambal Fried Chicken Sandwich was ok. The Bao was a little thin and too soggy to eat on the bottom of one of the chicken baos. The chicken is a single thin piece placed over the top of two buns. The sauce was good but a little too cloyingly sweet by the end. The chicken was perfectly crispy! The mushroom bao could have benefited from more mushrooms, especially to deserve the moniker. The mushroom bao was delicious!!!

I've regularly frequented Bambao since it's opening and overall, I like the food. It can be hit or miss at times but more consistent than not. My review is in response to an encounter with "Steve" --after an attempt to return food that had hair in it. To skip all the other offenses like Steve not offering a refund, walking away without asking my name, or telling me he'd be breaking protocol but was open to make an exception; I believe it was the "trust" response I received that most threw me off when I asked for a receipt. Literally he said "trust" and followed with "trust me, trust God..." after I expressed that I don't understand how the refund would be processed when he didn't take my name, contact information, nor provided anything in exchange for me returning the food. The attitude was weird and I walked away with nothing. No receipt. No refund. read more

Ordered chicken bao and pork cauliflower bowl. Bao was nice n soft n fluffy. The chicken was crispy but could of had more meat. You can also get beer, soda, bubble tea...or boozy bubble tea--did not get to try that out yet. Nice tables upstairs. Masks were worn by staff. read more

Bubble tea update: I usually don't go the classic route when getting boba, but there's such a comfort in a great milk-tea-sugar combo, whether you're enjoying hot or cold. I found Bambao's classic milk tea really good, with the right amount of sugar to balance it all out. The pearls were just the right amount of chewy, not too soft or strong in taste. I'm on a not-really-declared-or-announced-because-no-one-cares mission to try all the local bubble tea places in the DMV. I've found that I prefer different styles (slush, milk tea, tea combos, pea, etc.) at different places. Bambao is my 'classic milk tea' shop of choice! read more

Stephanie, We appreciate that you stopped in and gave Bambao a try.…
While it was a rocky start with a significant delay in my pick up order, the food certainly made up for it! I ordered the Crispy Mushroom bun with a side of edamame. Let's talk bun. Light, just the right amount of chew, and the perfect touch of sweetness to balance out the filling. Also, A+ on soaking up the good to the last drop sauce, which added a nice pop of tangy vinegar meets honey peanut sweetness. The mushrooms were generous in portion, well cooked and complimented the crispy tofu well. The edamame was perfectly cooked and not overly salted. Would definitely recommend checking Bamboa out! read more

Thanks to a Yes! Meal promotion, I was able to try a meal at Bambao. Before I even arrived, I was impressed. I ordered my meal online. I received an update that the bubbles for the tea wouldn't be ready for my scheduled pickup time. I was offered another option. Because, I was able to wait the extra minutes for the bubbles, I opted to wait. Walking in, I was impressed with the decor and signage. From the inside mural near the entrance to the sanitizing stations. I received my meal and wasn't disappointed. The chicken was crisp and had a sauce that gave the chicken a bit of heat. The crab rangoon was crisp, as well. The iced Vietnamese coffee was tasty, too. I was impressed that I was able to select my sweetness level. Being able to have bubbles (chewy, tapioca pearls sometime called boba) added to my iced coffee was a nice treat. I will definitely go back for another meal. read more
I went back for dinner tonite - they closed at 9. Preordered via yelp app. I ordered the Sambal Honey Fried Chicken bowl with daikon radish, and sambal sauce. The basil was missing also ordered a strawberry fruit tea with kiwi bursting boba. So good. I definitely like this place. Since it was so late and I was running in - I illegally parked and ran to door to get item. read more
surprise stumble! this place has booooooze bubble tea!! I didn't get it, but will do next time when it isn't 11am. I got strawberry black tea + bubbles. fantastic! It wasn't too sweet and the strawberry flavor was delish! didn't taste that artificial. Bubbles were soft and chewy, almost perfect! I'd go back to try the food... have to give asian food a shot in bmore. Wait for me! read more
I really enjoyed the bulgolgi bowl, meat was flavorful and tender and the pickled cabbage was a nice compliment to the entire bowl. I was also a huge fan of the sambal honey fried chicken bun. Absolutely delicious - flavor wise and crispiness/taste of the batter. The bun while delicious was not the softest I've had before but it works very well with the dish. I wasn't too much of a fan of the taro milk tea. I ordered it hot but came lukewarm. The flavor also tasted artificial. Looking forward to returning and trying the other things on the menu. 6/19/2020 update- this place never fails me! I've had a chance to try their Mongolian beef fried rice and it is so flavorful and delicious! Must try! The bulgolgi bowl is still perfect, YUM! read more

Honest Moment: I was not privy to this place before, and it hadn't been bookmarked as one of my restaurants to visit (I have about 100 places I'm still trying to get to ). Yet still, when I found out about it and started craving Asian flavors, I knew this was where I needed to be. And right I was. The food is really good here! I read through a few reviews and not long after decided to order the sambal honey fried chicken bowl with half rice and half super greens (I do this at CAVA and at be.bim.bop so figured I'd carry over the tradition). I placed the order online, and to my surprise, there was a code to receive 15% off your first order. Jackpot! I also ordered the blueberry tarragon bubble tea/juice with strawberry bubbles. You get to choose the amount of sweetness. I suggest the tad sweet (or not sweet at all if you're going to add fruity bubble bursts. Otherwise, it'll be too sweet.) Ordering online was easy. The hardest part of the night was finding a parking spot. It's located right on the corner of Aliceanna and Central. I drove around twice before I found a spot. I've had worse parking nightmares, so this wasn't too bad. Picking up was easy. My food was hot... and ready (sorry Little Ceasar's - I had to do it). I decided (for the first time since the start of the global health crisis) to eat at one of the little tables set up outside. I was a little nervous to sit and eat and at the same time, too eager to wait to get back home to try it. I'm glad I sat and had the opportunity to enjoy it fresh! The chicken thighs were crispy, and the combo of sweet with a little kick after was good. The rice was cooked perfectly. The super"greens weren't my favorite. Included was a large piece of bok choy (which was really watery), shredded carrots, pieces of pickled daikon, and lettuce. Even though I didn't care much for the super greens, that didn't take away from how good the food was/is. Also, next time (because there will be a next time) I might ask for extra sauce in the side to dip it all in. The food also came with a dressing. It was really tasty but the food was too good to use it on. Honestly, one side note: I couldn't help but think I was cheating on Ekiben by going here, but I think this place offers something different. Plus, they have bubble tea! So going here, isn't like cheating on Ekiben. It's like deciding to go see one cousin and still loving your other cousin knowing you'll visit them soon. Anyways, I say give it a try (before or after you go to Ekiben - in no particular order). read more
Everything was pretty good. I ordered the popcorn chicken and beef bulgogi bao. The sauces that came with the popcorn chicken were very good, spicy and savory. The chicken had the right amount of crunchiness to it. I have only had bao once before so I don't have much to compare it too, but the beef and sauce had a good flavor. I would go back to try more of the menu options. read more

Had been craving boba and was delighted to see that all drinks are 50% off right now! My bf and I got the taro milk tea and the salted caramel oolong milk tea, with boba. The drink menu is limited, particularly their milk tea section which features two ginger options out of the 4 milk tea flavors so not very many classic flavors to choose. The taro milk tea was fine and the tapioca pearls themselves were chewy but without flavor/sweet taste. However, my drink (the salted caramel oolong) was not what I was expecting at all. First, the salted caramel at the top had tiny chunks in it and two, the tea did not taste like oolong at all - rather it just tasted like their lemongrass ginger milk tea instead. I had stepped out of the store already when I had my first sip but was so surprised by this that I went back in to ask and the staff said she was sure she made the salted caramel oolong. She offered to make me another but I took her word for it. Perhaps they add lemon ginger to their oolong tea here. It was sort of refreshing though, but just not what I wanted. In terms of social distancing, don't worry, I kept my 6 ft distance from the counter and the staff immediately put on gloves when she started making our drinks. Gonna ride the ability to do takeout until it gets taken away during #quarantine season. Happy to support Asian businesses at this time too. Not too excited about the bubble tea I had today but maybe different flavors would be better. read more

We apologize that your bubble tea experience at BAMBAO was not as you…
I ordered their popcorn chicken one year ago and their quality seems to have gone down since then. The breading this time was crispy, but too heavy on the cornstarch and lacked the five spice flavor I was looking for. I let the chicken sit in the dipping sauce for a few seconds to soften up the outer coating. It was a decent amount of food for a small lunch, considering I wasn't too hungry. The napa salad on the side was quite tasty though! I also ordered the blueberry terragon tea with no additional sugar and felt the balance of sweetness and tanginess was perfect. I could definitely taste the blueberries! My friend ordered the Sambal Honey Fried Chicken Bowl and seemed to really enjoy it. I would order take out for lunch from here again, but would try their other menu options. read more
Ordered from here for delivery because I was craving something new and wanted to give Bambao a try. I got the Sambal Honey Fried Chicken Bun and the Popcorn Chicken. By the time I got my food it wasn't hot, instead it was barely lukewarm. I have a hard time believing it was made fresh because of this. Instead the popcorn chicken was soggy and almost cold like it had been sitting out for awhile, and the Sambal Honey Fried Chicken Bun was barely any better. Taste-wise I found myself really disappointed. The sauce that came with the popcorn chicken was decent. But without the sauce I did not taste any of the thai basil or spice salt... only salt, and lots of it. The Sambal Honey Fried Chicken bun had a similar issue, with the saltiness of it all overwhelming even the sambal sauce that was on the chicken. The piece of chicken was pretty thin too, and I found several bites of it just being salty breading. I will say though that the bun was pretty good, and one of the redeeming factors of my experience. However, even a few hours later the saltiness of everything I ate still lingers in my mouth. Overall I'd give Bambao, 2 or maybe 2.5 stars at most. I'm not sure if I'd ever order or eat from here again though, or recommend a friend to either unless drastic changes were made in the taste and quality of their food. read more
Great location! It's really close to Whole Foods. I had extremely high expectation for this place and they completely under delivered. They served me raw chicken... Yuck! I ordered a Classic Milk Tea ($4.50 for medium) with bubbles, no ice, less sweet and lactose free milk. As soon as I get my order, the top plastic burst open and I spill my tea everywhere. Fantastic -_- The tea was nice and strong but way too sweet, I did see them pouring condensed milk... and the bubbles were too hard. Overall, not the best milk tea I've had. In terms of food, I ordered Sambal Honey Fried Chicken Bao ($10.75) and Lemongrass Grilled Chicken Bao ($10.75). The fried chicken was great, juicy and crunchy. The Bao was a little cold so I wish that they heated that up but it was not a concern. It comes with Napa cabbage salad, the cabbage salad was bland and raw, I did not enjoy it. Here is the worst part: the grilled chicken... was raw. Please see the attached photo. I called them back and they said that they steam the chicken and then grill it for 45 mins. They ensured me that the chicken was not raw but... UMMM CHICKEN DOES NOT STAY THAT PINK IF ITS BEEN GRILLED FOR 45 MINS!!! I was thoroughly disgusted. However, they get 2 stars because Daniel (not sure if he was the owner) was nice enough to refund me my money and give me 15% discount for my next purchase but I don't think I will be getting the grilled chicken bao again... In terms of service, it was their first day so it was pretty chaotic. I saw them mess up orders, serve me raw chicken and slow food preparation. But I am sure this will improve with time. read more

Ate here again with friends but got take-out this time. I ordered the Bulgogi buns and they were really good! It came with a surprisingly generous portion of flavorful, tender bulgogi beef. The bun is also larger than the ones you get at Ekiben so I feel like I definitely got more food. I found the sliced pear that they sandwiched between the buns to be a fun addition-- the soft crunch and sweetness went well with the rest of the ingredients. The sliced carrots and radishes served on the side were dressed in a light vinegrette that was nice to cleanse the pallet after the savoriness of the bulgogi. Also got the coconut pudding and it was very refreshing! My only complaint is that there wasn't enough! It came in a small container (about the size of the guac-sides you can get at Chipotle). The pudding wasn't too sweet and had a nice coconut flavor that was accented by subtle hints of basil. read more

Stopped in today to try out this conveniently located restaurant at the corner of Aliceanna & central. I picked up an order of the amazing sambal honey fried chicken over white rice, crab rangoon and blueberry terragon tea. Ordering online was super easy and was ready at the time I requested. Only downside is parking can be a tad bit challenging. As far as the foods taste and quality. It was superb. I can't say enough good things about this chicken OhEmGeeee, it's the perfect crispy ness. The sauce is out of this world. A perfect balance of spicy and sweetness to offset the spice. The Rangoon was really really fresh. Crispy flaky outside warm cheesy crabby goodness. And the tea, out of this world good. Perfect blend of blueberry and terragon read more

Checked out this cute place with a couple of coworkers! We ordered a lot of food and shared it. MANGO FRUIT TEA: Delicious! It wasn't too sweet and the fruit flavor was very strong and fresh. POPCORN CHICKEN: A++++. I am Taiwanese, and this popcorn chicken was amazing. It's better than some of the places in Rockville, which is saying a lot. I can't eat spicy things, but my coworkers say that the sauce for it was also delicious. BULGOGI BAO: The bulgogi was marinated to the perfect flavor, the bao was a nice consistency, and it tasted great. Would definitely order this again, though they went a little overboard with the garlic. MUSHROOM BAO: Tasty, but the flavor was a lot more savory and heavy than expected. The mushrooms were a nice crispy texture. CRAB FRIED RICE: This one was a little disappointing. It wasn't really much to write home about. They also used imitation crab instead of real crab, which wasn't what we expected. SERVICE: We waited about ten-fifteen minutes for our food, which wasn't too long of a wait. You clean up after yourself so not much to comment on here. DECOR: I really liked how well-lit Bambao was. The upstairs seating area was cute and cozy, and was a great place to just hang out. The murals on the walls were also really cool, and the music was nice. CONCLUSION: Cute and hip new place for Asian eats. Would 100% come back for the popcorn chicken, but not sure about some of the other food. read more

Was very excited to check this place out with a friend. Overall, everything was very tasty and I'll visit again, but overpriced enough that I wont be a frequent visitor. I ordered the sambal honey fried chicken bao which came with cabbage tossed with a tasty dressing. Decent serving size. A friend ordered the same chicken, but as a bowl. It was $3 more expensive, but the serving size was not much larger. The oolong tea was very tasty. A previous reviewer commented about the plastic cover instead of a lid - this is standard for bubble tea. They also had a sample of the apple tea out which was sweet but very good. The crab rangoon were tasty, shaped like spring rolls, but $6 for just 3. Glad I ordered them, but won't be adding these to my order regularly. I guess it's also not much of a shock but they (appear to) have imitation crab inside rather than real crab meat. read more

Happened to catch this place while on work trip. Looks like it's their first day (11/4) so I recognize service staff is still trying to get acclimated. Came around 7pm to a decent crowd waiting for their orders. Food (boba included) took a while to get out but it wasn't a red flag or anything. Lemongrass Ginger Milk Tea - I got the less sweet version with non-lactose milk. Drink wasn't too milky, but I also only detected hints of lemongrass and ginger. For some reason the tea felt like it was Jasmine but I have horrible taste buds so you probably shouldn't trust me. I do wish there was a stronger tea flavor, but maybe I over customized. The boba itself was a bit al dente. Imo it could stand to be a bit chewier. As it stands it was aite, but I am glad that my request for low sugar actually resulted in something not too sweet though. Coconut pudding: this is like what panna cotta would be if you made it out of coconut milk. The size of it was... Well, there's a reason why it's 2.25. Crab Cake Bowl - I'm basic as hell so I ordered it with cauliflower rice. And it was pretty good! Cauliflower wasn't too mushy, the crab cake portions were decent, and there was some heat to the dish. I do kinda feel like the crab cake itself kinda felt more mayo-y as opposed to being curry flavored, but again my taste buds are broken and you shouldn't listen to me. I will say - I might tone down the salt in the crab cake a tad and I would've liked a tad more sauce overall, but it was pretty good. Overall, it wasn't bad! For a day one effort no balls were dropped and the food was pretty decent. Would probably visit again if I need a quick bite next time I'm in town read more

This was my first time trying Bambao and I was able to get 15% off my first order using a code given on their website! I got the sambal honey fried chicken bao with the mango fruit tea. I would definitely come back for more bao buns and possibly to try their boozy boba! read more
Hello, I got there a little after they open. And it was worth walking over there. The front counter person was great. I didn't know they had even opened till I googled boba locations. I will being coming here a lot more; friendly staff great loaction, not to small. Great natural lighting. Menu isn't expensive. Everything is made to order. Well everything that is not in the small case at the front. So be prepare for a wait but nothing to bad. If you don't want to wait which is of course your right. Do an order ahead of time. Bambao has a really good menu going but not executed that well. For the Taiwanese fried chicken, it was not seasoned and the outer batter isn't what I usually expect from this dish. However, the fried rice and the sambal rice dish are better food choices they are well seasoned and big portions. For a boba place, the boba was not good. It was hard and the drink was so sweet even after ordering less sugar. Overall, it's a cute place for a snack/ coffee break but I wouldn't sit down for a meal. read more

I ordered fried chicken Bao and beef bowl. Both are not bad. Especially the chicken Bao, I Loved it, the chicken was crispy and the side dishes are sour which decrease the feeling of fatness. Really fresh taste for the side dishes. The beef bowl was ok it was too much sauce for me. I gave four star only because the milk tea there is not as good as expected. The milk tea is just like the milk tea I bought in Asian grocery store. Not taste like hand made milk tea. Other than that, the food and people who worked there are good and nice. read more
