I went to Bam Bam's for dinner on Sept. 14th, and I have to say that I am not impressed. I ordered a Brisket sandwich with potato salad and coleslaw on the side. The Brisket was ok, 3 out of 5 stars (3/5). The BBQ sauce was cold, and didn't taste very good. (1/5) The Potato Salad was decent, (3/5) The coleslaw was cold, disgustingly slimy and tasted somewhat indescribable, not for a place with women and children, that is. I have eaten the moss out of an irrigation ditch before, and that tastes better than the coleslaw (not that I want any, again, either of them). (1/5) Is it worth the money? I love the ambiance in this joint, laid back, chill, and serving you tons of meat on butcher paper, long picnic tables, an endless soda fountain with so many possibilities, and a bunch of BBQ sauces to choose from. But since I'm not a huge meat fan, it feels so heavy. My kids all love the meat options but I find myself craving a salad. The cole slaw is not enough greens, so if you're all about that meat dinner, this is definitely the place to go. And if you have kids, do yourself a favor and get the huge thing of mac n cheese, because thank goodness it's not Kraft mac n cheese (is that anyone else's pet peeve with mac n cheese kids meal options?!?!?!, anyone?!??!!?) and get the ribs and the brisket. I used to love the nachos, but they're not nachos. They're chips with meat and cheese. After being sick for almost a week, I finally felt like eating and wanted something good! Bam Bam's is very close to our home and their menu looks great. My son went to get takeout and when he came home we were very disappointed! He ordered the BBQ Swatchos and was shocked to find he had to pour everything over the chips! In addition, the beans were not fully cooked! Not much is worse than trying to eat a pinto bean that is hard and crunchynd getting that crappy yellow nacho cheese that gas stations serve! My meal was even worse! I love coleslaw and this looked like it was two weeks old and tasted that way, too! Needless to say, it went in the garbage. No one else would eat it... The mac and cheese was horrible and had Goldfish on top! Who in their right minds puts Goldfish on mac and cheese? I would love it if I was ten, but I'm not. There did not appear to be any cheese on it! I dumped it out and found some sort of grey mixture, which I am sure they meant as cheese sauce. I removed the Goldfish, added shredded cheese and mixed it and still could not eat it. Guess where it went? The pulled pork sandwich was tolerable, but only after I picked out all the pieces of fat and sinew. UGH Two out of the three sauces were ok, the third was SO vinegary that it could not be used. Some credit must be given to Bam Bam's because I did call and speak with someone who took my name and the $35 we spent on lunch will be gifted back anytime we want to go in. This place deserves an extra dollar sign ($$$). It is seriously about twice as expensive as any other barbecue place in town. It is a fast-food-style, picnic bench seating restaurant. We went there recently and ordered the equivalent of what we would order at another place (sides, drink, meat) and our charges were $30-$40 per person. Don't get me wrong, the barbecue is excellent. I would rate it slightly better than R&R barbecue or Smoking Apple. But not twice as good. If you go, forget the sides, drink a water, and be prepared to pay. read more

I eat here a couple times a week and always take clients and friends there. I get the turkey sandwich and eat it without any sauce. It has enough flavor in the meat. I've had brisket but love the turkey. For the side, I've gotten the beans and it's good, but prefer the Mac & Cheese. There are a few single tables or you can find a seat next to someone on a larger table. The restaurant is always clean, the food is awesome and the staff is always really nice. It's about $10 for a meal and very much worth it. I recently ate at the newly opened Spanish Fork location. The food and staff are exactly the same. The problem with the nachos is that they are expensive-$12 and they get cold in about 10 mins. I had another plate with just meat and a couple of sides- possibly baked beans. I have been to Rudy's, Terry Black's, The Salt Lick, and even Franklin's in Austin, TX, and Bam Bam's is by far the closest thing to Texas BBQ you will find in Utah. The ribs are smoked to perfection. The smoked turkey is full of flavor. The sausage is juicy and spicy. But man oh man, the brisket the brisket is what makes Bam Bam's great. The fifth Yelp star is being withheld because of the coleslaw, which is just not that good at all. And the place seems a little run down and sometimes dirty inside. Bam Bam, you did not disappoint! Been meaning to get down to UT Valley for a while to try this place out, and finally managed to have a reason to be down that way. I like the look and layout of the restaurant, very much like more of the BBQ places down south, with just a bunch of picnic tables, and the menu options and style of service. Basically you just order everything by the pound, no 1-2-3 meat combo plates, the only combos are with the sandwiches, so you just order the exact amount you want of each meat, and side, and call that good! I tried the Brisket, Pork, and Sausage. The Brisket and sausage were top notch, and the pork was decent, but nothing special. This is probably the best Brisket in Utah or at least tied for first. It was meaty, slices thick, and tasted like good beefy brisket, not like an overpowering rub or injection. Everything was pretty light on the smoke flavor, so if you are more of a smoky BBQ person, you may not love Bam Bams. The sausage was very unique and very very tasty. Whether you are a sausage person or not, I would recommend giving theirs a try. I just want to add that I dint care for either of the sides that I got. The potato salad was pretty bland, and the main strong flavor was one I didn't care for, which comes from the type of potatoes they use rather than seasonings. The coleslaw looked great, and was really promising at first, but again it lacked any real flavor or inspiration. Service was friendly, and you can tell the people that work there really love their job, love BBQ, and want to make a good impression on their customers. They keep the restaurant clean despite the TONS of customers they attract, and aren't afraid to ditch some of the real "traditional" BBQ, and BBQ restaurant mainstays in exchange for a better customer experience. Having the great big new pepsi machines, and a cleaner larger dining area, are a nice addition to the dingy hole in the wall type of place they are mimicking. Bam Bams is certainly making a play, and trying real hard to be the best BBQ spot in Utah, and I would have to say that they are doing a pretty darn good job of it. Just so long as they continue to stay true to the good, high quality, meticulously prepared food they are turning out at the moment, ad they continue to grow and expand, I think they will keep a comfortable place in the pinnacles of BBQ not just in Utah, but in the surrounding areas as well. I own a Traeger grill and often smoke my own briskets at home. I think I do a pretty good job and am happy with the flavor vs what I can get at a restaurant. Until now... Work brought in Bam Bam's for lunch this week and I was blown away. The brisket was tender, had a fantastic flavor and doesn't really need any sauce. My only regret is that there wasn't more. Pork Swatchos were delicious. Big portion too! Tortilla chips covered in a yummy cheese sauce, beans, and sweet pork. I put extra bbq sauce on top (plenty of sauce on each table), and pickles. I also added a few bites with jalapeño for extra kick. You can add as many pickles, onions, and jalapeños as you want - they are right next to the soda machine. Also had a side of Mac n' Cheese. Our first time so we opted to get a little of everything (paid by weight) plus two small sides ($1.99/side). The lean beef brisket is OFF THE HOOK (that's a compliment) tender, juicy, and smoked just right for a Texas-style mouthful. Pulled pork is soft and tasty, doesn't need sauce (5 stars). The sausage is drier than most, spicy, and virtually greaseless. The meat slides off the ribs (I'd buy at least one)'. The turkey surprised us... it's perfectly cooked and slightly smokey, leaving you with tasting turkey instead of how other BBQ joints meat all taste the same. They offer full turkey breasts for Thanksgiving if you want to impress your guests ($30). Coleslaw can be drippy with juice and too zippy, but Bam Bam's BBQ has a fresh balance of veggies to flavoring in theirs. Their baked beans are NOT the soft, sweet, bacon kind. Instead, the pinto beans are cooked al dente with cilantro and have a savory flavor. I like less bite to my pinto, kidney, and black beans. Your meal is served sloppily on a waxed paper atop a plastic tray; practical with less waste. It didn't bother us, but it bothers some, so just letting you know. I'd like them to add fried cauliflower to the menu and have butter pats for the cheap white bread. Pepsi products are on tap, so you Diet Coke addicts might want to bring your own drink. read more

Uh... I would say Bam Bams is overall a 3-star restaurant. I had heard many good things about it so I was very eager to try it. Here is the rundown. 1) The food itself was pretty good. If I had to rate just the meat I would give it 4-stars. I got a brisket sandwich and it was yummy. It was a tad bit greasy and fatty but not over the top so I was fine with that. The BBQ sauces were Delicous. My favorite was the spicy one. The Mac and cheese was alright. I enjoyed the crushed goldfish crackers on the top, but I had to pay extra for the Mac. The Pepsi freestyle machines were pretty cool too. I enjoyed my vanilla Dr Pepper. 2) I didn't like the price at all. I am not a fan of restaurants that charge you for every little thing. For example it was 35 cents to add cheese to my sandwich. Mac and cheese was a side but cost extra. Overall I got a brisket sandwich with cheese and the Mac and cheese and my total was close to $14. I could have eaten three more sandwiches before I was full. So you know the portions aren't huge. 3) the place wasn't super clean. The only place to put dirty trays once done eating was on a chair with a paper sign saying, "place trays here." Average BBQ. Of course this is a review after eating at 7:00 at night, and I know that it has been sitting for a while. But here goes. Brisket was extremely over cooked. Fall-apart is just too much, and it turns dry. This was no exception. Flavorful, but dry. Ribs were also extremely overcooked. Also dry. Best part of the meal was the spicy sausage. Juicy, very flavorful, and spicy the way I like it. The sides were also not very impressive. Baked beans were trying to be chili beans, not baked beans. Too much chili powder. Ok. On my series of BBQ reviews I have visited Bam Bam's BBQ. During this visit I sampled 3 items. The pulled pork sandwich, the turkey sandwich and the brisket sandwich. For the choices of sides I sampled the potato salad, macaroni cheese, beans and coleslaw. This BBQ joint serves the meat sans-sauce.there are 3 options on the table. A vinegar based sauce familiar to the central NC region of NC. A second sauce option dark and sweet with a little heat and a heavy molasses option as the third. All three stand alone as well prepared and balanced options. The meat was all well prepared, moist and well presented. The pulled pork was smoked but not overly. The best sauce paring iMHO was the carolina vinegar. The turkey which I expected to be dry was not and was the surprise of the day. Cooked thoughtless and sliced for the sandwich it really didn't need any sauce as the smoke was slight but flavorful. The brisket was well prepared and was a great balance of meat and fat I ate this with and without the sweet brown sauce. Each sandwich was presented on a freshly baked bun that was soft, light and was a compliment to the sandwich and didn't overpower the meat. The sides choices were plentiful with a few listed as premium. I found that the Mac n Cheese was the forerunner being creamy with a cheddar cracker topping. The potato salad is mustard based and tasty. The beans were not in my preferred taste range however did introduce me to a regional style that I will have explore further. The coleslaw is a rough chop cabbage white. It Was good and had a standard coleslaw profile. Recommendations would be the turkey or brisket combos with Mac n Cheese and potato salad. Wow. Best brisket I have ever had from a restaurant. There is a beautiful bark on the outside of it and the smoke taste goes beyond just the outside of the meat. They asked us if we wanted fattier brisket (uh, yes!!) and i thought it was great they checked what type. The Mac and cheese is pretty good, too. The goldfish crackers are surprisingly yummy in it. I've eaten at a lot of BBQ restaurants, particularly along the Wasatch Front. I would rate Bam Bam's in the middle of the pack. I don't dislike it, but I wouldn't go out of my way to eat here either. We walked right up to order without a wait on a Friday night (usually not a good sign for a restaurant). The restaurant employees were helpful, but didn't seem particularly knowledgeable (I actually LOVE strong opinions when I ask "what is your favorite dish"... I hate the answer "oh I don't know, they're all good - translated, "I don't care, just order") We ordered a 1/4 pound of turkey (better than most, but not as good as Big Al's smoked turkey down the road in Provo), 1/4 pound of brisket (our favorite meat choice), and a pulled pork sandwich (decent pork, but even the employees said that they usually don't like the pork). They only had 2 side choices (they were out of the 3rd choice of beans), the coleslaw (not my favorite), and potato salad (waaaay too much mustard for our taste). The food is served on paper on a school tray--points for being unique, but kind of a strange way to eat meat just thrown on paper (see my picture). In my opinion, the sauces are what turned me off with this place. I've eaten meat before that was so juicy and flavorful that you don't need bbq sauce, but most meat flavors are enhanced by a good sauce. Bam Bam's sauces (tangy and sweet) are essentially 98% vinegar with some stuff thrown in. Seriously, I didn't even have to squeeze the bottle... it just poured out all over the paper on the tray (another reason I didn't love the way the food is served... too difficult to pour a little sauce and dip the meat like you would fries in ketchup). Granted, I'm not a fan of vinegar, but even my wife who loves vinegar was turned off by the sauces. We ended up eating our meats mostly without any sauce (luckily they were moist... points for that). Overall, I think this place has room to improve. The atmosphere is great, the smell not as bad as other smokey bbq joints (although my coworkers went for lunch and smelled a little like bbq back at the office), the service is reasonable, the sauces are sub-par, and the food is just average. I love bbq so I might stop in again if I'm driving past with my window open, but I'll wait a while to give them time to improve. read more

Meh. Oh, do I need to say more or can I leave it at that? This place is fine. It's got bbq nachos, which is certainly a novelty. It's exactly what it sounds like: chips, cheese sauce, baked beans, your choice of barbecued meat and sour cream (for an additional charge). I had the chopped beef, which was certainly flavorful and tender enough, but was nothing particularly special. It wasn't bad, other than perhaps a little more expensive than the typical bbq of this caliber, but the service was fairly fast, even during the lunch rush. Our group of 12 was completely served in about 10 - 15 minutes. Let's see... other things. There are a lot of long tables, so there's a chance you'll sit next to a stranger if it's a busy day and the map on the wall is pretty cool, especially since Utah has so many pins in it that it seems like it's been destroyed. Sauces lack flavor, the meat (turkey and pulled pork) tasted like they'd been boiled. The mac n'cheese had goldfish crackers on it--maybe to cover the lackluster flavor of the dish itself. If you read my reviews, you may notice that I tend to order Mac and Cheese if it is an option. The Mac and Cheese was a little subpar compared to other places. It seemed like it was a generic cheese sauce they put on some noodles, topped with crushed gold fish. The sandwich was good sized but I felt that the portion size was a little less than I expected and compared to other BBQ joints. The flavor was good and I enjoyed the sauce options they had on the tables. I kind of hated their parking lot. I parked in front and backing out was a bit of a joke, due to some vehicles parking on the street behind us. I was in town for a funeral and had been told Bam Bam's was "best in Utah" so decided to check it out. The services at the counter was awful. There were two guys, both were rude to me and my wife. They seemed grumpy and impatient. It was pretty slow at the time, past the weekday lunch rush, so I don't know why they felt the need to rush us through. Their meat was ok. Not great, not bad, just ok. The sauces were fine, also just ok. But the portion sizes and value were flat-out terrible. They sell by the half-pound. We got a half pound of brisket and a half pound of ribs, which we paid almost ten dollars for, each. At any other BBQ place (with better tasting meat), I could get more meat on a two-meat plate for $15. Then we had to pay extra for sides, which come with your meal anywhere else. All together, we paid $30 for tiny portions of mediocre meat and two sides. I won't be going back. R&R is better by far. read more

This is a place that depending on your palette you will either love or dislike. I would have give it a five if there was a better variety on sides. The sides are all very vinegary in taste, and there are only three choices; potato salad, coleslaw, baked beans. They were all very ehhhh (i did not hate them or love them it was just decent).
