Dear Ball Square Cafe, I like you. Do you like me? Check one: [ ] Yes, and I therefore give you every possible delicious permutation of breakfast meat, egg, vegetable, and starch, often mixed together, always extremely fresh and stuffed to the gills with high-quality ingredients. I even have that amazing protein sandwich of egg, lox, and veggies, so you won't lose the rest of your day to a brunch-induced coma. Also, I give you fruit. TONS of fruit. A HEAPING BOWLFUL of fruit. And not that crappy loser fruit. Mangoes and raspberries and strawberries and melon. Let's run away together. [ ] No, which I demonstrate weekly by making you wait outside in line if you dare to snooze that alarm one time too many and show up even a minute after 8:45am. On a weekend. Sucker. [ ] Maybe. I mean, there are heaters outside so you don't get too cold. This might be how I tell you I like like you. Or it might be how I let you down easy. I mean, how emotionally astute can I be? I'm a restaurant. Please return to my locker. Thanks for reals, mean it! Love and kisses, Tamar read more

This place is everything! I've also had the pleasure of dining next door at Soundbites, but Ball Sq is definitely my favorite. During my first visit I popped over with my God Father to celebrate my birthday with waffles. I ordered the "Delight" and after seeing its presentation and consuming the amazingly fresh fruit I'm convinced they've shortened the name from "Delightfully OMG Melt in your mouth waffle with every fruit you can think of on top." That was definitely the original name. Their whipped cream is homemade and THICK. A little goes a long way. The waffle, itself, was perfect and only needed a hint of syrup for the "hmmmmm" effect. We also had omelets, I had the Mexican and the GF had the Tunisian (with artichokes). The eggs were fluffy, the veggies were cooked to perfection (neither under nor over). I almost forgot the most important part: the portions! It was massive! Of course, due to the ton of fruit on the waffle, I was unable to eat my Mexican which was chock full of goodness and fresh avocado with sour cream on top. My GF was also unable to finish his. Coffee, tea, water, and bottled juices are self-serve. One caveat is the price of the java. I was unhappy there. If you have your coffee in a mug it's $3.99 vs $3.49 in a to-go cup. Not sure I understand the concept. The long and short of it: Ball sq IS your restaurant hot spot. read more

Unique, friendly, yummy breakfast place! I came here for the first time the other day and left stuffed and satisfied. My gf has been driving by this place and always telling me how there's a line out the door- so we made it a point to go this weekend. Of course we had to wait outside but believe me, it is worth the wait. We get seated and the waitress was very friendly and explained how they work. Mostly all the drink are self serve which is different than what I'm used to. But it worked well and you can refill your water or coffee without waiting. There are a wide range of drinks in the fridge like bottled water, V8, and kombuca. A guy who seems to be in charge was constantly checking to make sure we could find everything. As for the food- considering how crowded it is- our food came out pretty quick. We split the tri berry Belgium waffle and the crab Benedict. BOTH were amazing. The waffle was the perfect dessertish plate , made with homemade whipped cream which was thick. The fruit was all fresh. As for the Benedict - YES!!! The hollandaise sauce must be freshly made. And the crab was thick pieces and just the meat. The English muffin was a little tough to cut into but it might have just been that one order. It was all around great. I highly recommend waiting in the line and giving t a try. Great food! They also have lunch menu too which sounded yummy but we haven't tried it yet. Definitely planning to go back. read more

This place always have a line outside, but my friend and I did not have to wait long. I went on a Sunday morning and the restaurant next door allows Ball Cafe to use some of their tables on the weekends when it gets busy. Same food and service. All the food here looks amazing and everything comes in really large portions!! I wanted to try everything. I finally decided on the Tri Berry French Toast. It was delicious and the fruit was very fresh. My friend got the Grill Special which he said was good too. I was looking at the other plates as they were coming out and they all looked so good! I really need to go back and try their other stuff. There were so many options! read more

This place is a great option for brunch, but not if you're in any sort of a hurry. When we arrived, it was raining and the wait list is done through a physical line outside. There's an awning with heaters, so we were tucked out of the weather a little, but if you leave the line- you're out. The line moved moderately quickly, but not so speedy. Once inside, it's bustling and homey with slightly cramped tables. The beverages are a self-serve system for coffee and tea and such in the back of the restaurant, but I ordered one of the few drinks that isn't self-serve, the hot chocolate, and I recommend it highly! They top it with real, homemade whipped cream which makes all the difference. As for the rest of the food, we had, between us, regular pancakes, an omelet (meat lover's), the coconut macaroon french toast, and a side of turkey sausage. The pancakes were good, but they lacked that butter-crisped edge like the ones at The Paramount downtown Boston (my other brunch in Boston on my weekend trip there) that really set above a GOOD set of pancakes, for me. The sausage was good, nothing extra-ordinary. The omelet was much better, in comparison to the Paramount, as it had that fluffy, incorporated texture that comes from a good technique and getting air into it. Then, the french toast really was delightful. The coconut macaroon element is a sprinkling of gently toasted coconut crust over it with a raspberry drizzle and lots of that homemade whipped cream. It was really quite delicious it you have a sweet tooth. I liked that the french toast didn't fall into that soggy, all-soft no texture fallacy of french toast sometimes. This was a well done dish. The service wasn't 100%, there was a lag between seating and getting to put our order and asking for the check and getting it, which in such a small space with a self-service element, I felt shouldn't have happened, but it didn't hinder the experience. I'd check it out if one was interested! read more

Ball Square Cafe has delicious breakfast foods! Their omelets have been the most enjoyable.

AMAZING french toast - but I have a lot of work to do - they have Seven different kinds of french toast! Not to mention pancake and waffle sections The SEVEN: 1.Omar's Favorite With powdered sugar 2. Caramelized Banana 3. Caramelized Banana and Strawberries 4. Banana Stuffed with cream cheese 5. Caramelized Strawberry 6. Caramelized Apple-Cinnamon 7. Tri-Berry I will make it my duty to try all 7 of course. The Caramelized Banana and strawberries (or just bananas or just strawberries) was fantabulous - don't get the extra real maple syrup, there's plenty of wonderful liquid sugar to dip it in already. The banana and cream cheese stuffed french toast had just the right amount of cream cheese but I would go with the caramelized hands down. The caramelized apple cinnamon was also great, especially if you like apple over banana, the soft cooked slices of caramelized apple are nicely arranged atop the french toast. The banana and walnut pancakes were not as good as the french toast but still amazing; one of the omelets I tired was cooked just perfectly, the veggies inside seem so fresh, and the grilled mashed potatoes are to die for. Also, the fruit bowls are fabulous with melon, kiwi, mango, papaya...yum, the waitstaff is great and friendly, the drinks are self-serve, you're going to wait in line but a good tactic is to hang out in True Grounds across the street until you see the line die down and then go jump right in (or go earlier - they open at 7 or 7:30 I think)! Mike is (one of?) the owner and he makes it his duty to introduce himself and remember you - it's adds a lot to the place and I adore him! read more

Busy busy busy!!! This place has a line. A long line. Very long. We legit waited for roughly an hour before we got seated, but there was a person (Mike?) conducting the line go make sure the customers waiting outside were happy and reassured that they would get seated soon. The other nice thing was the fact that they let us go inside go get coffee! I think you pay a small amount for limitless coffee. So you could go in, grab a cup, make your coffee and get back in line and stay warm while waiting! It was definitely nice. And mike was a charmer! Service: our server was super funny and very helpful. She was swift and took very good care of us even though she was literally flying through the restaurant, serving multiple tables Food: portions. Are. Huge. I honestly can't remember everything we got, but we should've just shared bc 4 plates of food was enough to feed 6!!! But no complaints there! It was delicious and well worth my money! Overall, amazing service, great food, kind workers. Highly recommend this place! read more

An amazing breakfast experience! I told my sister I wanted to take a visiting friend to brunch, and she and her husband insisted we all go to Ball Square Cafe. The food was so fantastic that when my friend's flight was cancelled this morning, she asked if we could go back for breakfast. Yesterday we got there around 10:15, and had to wait in line, as expected. However, the owner came outside and served us complimentary hot chocolate (with real whipped cream!) to drink while we waited. We were also told that we could go inside and get our coffee/tea before being seated, as the beverages are self-serve. Once we were seated, the service was fast and friendly. The food came out very quickly, and all our meals were awesome. I had one of the specials; challah french toast stuffed with bananas and nutella. When we returned today, my friend got that same special, but added carmelized strawberries and whipped cream to it. I had the asparagus and prosciutto omelet, which was also fantastic, as were the grilled mashed potatoes it came with. The coffee was fresh and delicious, and the bathroom was spotless. I will be back as often as I can afford it. read more

I've been wanting to try this place out and finally got the chance to on a Wednesday morning. I ordered the caramelized strawberry and banana Belgium waffle with a side of eggs and bacon. The timing of food and presentation was amazing but I was a bit disappointed with the food. The bacon was overcooked and literally broke into pieces once the fork touched it. The Belgium waffle and the berries were so soggy, probably due to the fact that I left it sitting for a while. But overall it is a pricey place and in my opinion, not worth going a second time. read more

I feel it is safe to write a review now that I have had the pleasure to have breakfast in this fine establishment quite a few times. Service: from the moment you arrive you are greeted and invited to seat to either where ever you'd like to seat or they'll show you the table you may occupy depending on how busy it is. Coffee and juices or soda are self served. The servers are very energetic and have great attitudes and disposition. Thy will accommodate your every need. I came in once with a very hungover friend, the server went next door, bought a Ginger Ale for her since they didn't have that soda in their restaurant.... Who does that? The servers at Ball Square Café. More over, In one occasion I dropped half of my English muffin, a minute later the server arrived to my table with a whole nicely toasted in replacement. Food: OMG, I have had the best strawberry waffles in my life, Their french toast are amazing and their eggs Benedict with avocado and tomato are just ridiculously great, their Asparagus and prosciutto omelet is so yum... As I said I have been there many times. I recommend this place with out reservation, hands down the best for breakfast place in Medford read more

Hot damn! Went here for brunch and arrived around 1 PM. We were dismayed to see a huge line, but then realized half of it was really for Soundbites. We were greeted by someone I think is the owner, Mike, who told us we could help ourselves to beverages b/c those were self serve and we should wait in line. The peeps in front had been waiting 30 mins and so we settled in for a wait. However, there was a table for four (we were a party of 5) so we got in before them. Score!! The food was AMAZING. The options are ridiculous and everyone's food looked so good. I shared a mushroom omelette with homefries and a bagel with a friend and a side order of the deluxe pancakes. The pancake "side" was HUUUUUGE - two pancakes and piles of fruit. When it came, my friend was like, that's not ours. I'm all, yes it is. He's like, no it's not. I'm all, YES IT IS - that's the side. He's like, WHAT?! That's the SIDE?! Yes, yes it is. Other friends got the yogurt and fruit (counted the fruit - 14 in total: pineapple, cantaloupe, honey dew, strawberries, bananas, orange, blueberries, blackberries, apple, kiwi, grapes, papaya . . . I can't even remember the rest), another omelette, and the belgian waffle with caramelized bananas. That was DIVINE OMG. So yes, I would highly recommend this place and be prepared to wait, though we definitely lucked out. I also read about the war between the two places, and knowing the history now, I'm a lil appalled at Ball Square Cafe's tactics. I guess business is business ya know. But daaaamn, food war fo shoooo. I might have to try the place next door now . . . PS they're only open till 3 PM. read more

The French toast was delicious, although they forgot our whip cream and powdered sugar. I definitely recommend the marinated steak tip plate with mashed potatoes instead of the diced, scrambled cheese eggs and toast. I would suggest customers to pass on the crab meat eggs Benedict I found lots of crab shells in my meal while eating which made my breakfast terrible. Otherwise not a bad place to eat, just wouldn't suggest the crab meat eggs Benedict. read more

BEST BRUNCH PLACE IN TOWN! I absolutely love love LOVE Ball Square Cafe. The food is amazing, the service is great, and the staff are incredibly friendly. I used to live in Boston and came here all the time for brunch on weekends. There's usually a line no matter how early you go, but the wait's not too bad. Typically it's a 15-20 minute wait but it varies. I've gone at 11am on a Saturday before and was seated almost immediately. Either way, it's worth the wait. Their waffle delight or French toast delight is always HEAPED with fresh fruit. And not just some store-bought berries and melons like some other places. The fresh fruit here includes mangoes, kiwis, all types of berries, grapes, bananas, pineapples, and more. Also their grilled mash is absolute heaven, perfectly crispy on the outside and smooth on the inside. The owner Mike is very accommodating and always makes an effort to keep everyone in line happy. He makes sure to update everyone on how long the wait is and also has a really good memory considering how many customers he greets each day. He remembered my friend the second time we came here! In summary, I love this place. I come here every time I'm in the mood for brunch. Even after I've moved away, I still come here every time I visit Boston. read more

I understand that some people appreciate variety but I value quality over quantity. It would be much nicer if they did a few breakfast items well then to do tons of not particularly well, especially for the prices charged. It's rather ridiculous to have a $14 "meat lovers omelette" that only comes with one meat & every additional meet costing extra. That being said customer service could also be improved. We called in advance letting them know we had a large party coming in. However we ended up waiting over 20 minutes while several other groups got seated in tables that could've been pushed together for our group. I don't want to say there was a racial aspect to it but it seemed to me like there was, since we were the only people of color in the restaurant besides the staff. In short, Yelp reviews lead us astray on this one. read more

I went to this place because the amazing reviews from other customers and because I saw they had gluten free pancakes and Belgian waffles. The service was great, and they have self serve coffee and tea for while you wait and while you are eating which I really appreciate. The wait was not long-- my boyfriend and I were seated within 5 minutes on a Saturday morning. We ordered the strawberry shortcake Belgian waffle and the corned beef hash with two over easy eggs. I HIGHLY recommend the gluten free Belgian waffles here. They are crispy, yet fluffy and absolutely delicious. Although I asked for whipped cream on the side, I got it on top of the waffle. But the whipped cream is very dense so I could just scrape it off to the side. The corned beef hash was a HUGE disappointment. The corned beef was mush with very little flavor and there was very little potatoes in the "hash". The meat had a metallic taste which makes me think it came from a can. I was very letdown by this dish because after looking at other customers omelettes, Benedicts, French toasts, and breakfast sandwiches I think we just ordered wrong. The corned beef hash seemed like an anomaly in the standard product of this restaurant. I recommend this place, but DO NOT get the corned beef hash. read more

I was excited to eat here this morning based on the great reviews and was a bit disappointed. We were seated quickly but it took a while for anyone to come back to take our order. I ordered two eggs with toast and homefries and a chocolate chip pancake on the side. The pancake was just okay, I wouldn't come back for it. The homefries, which are grilled mashed potatoes, had potential but were cold when I got them. Overall, it was a mediocre meal. read more

From the breakfast to the service this restaurant is a must! The owner Mike personally came to introduce himself. He then took the time to personally meet us after he learned we are new to town. This place was a 5 star experience! Honestly one of the best breakfast experiences I've ever had. If you are coming here expect a line. However they have even managed to make waiting in line enjoyable. There's cool jazz music playing, with warm heaters over your head, and coffee! You can get your self serve coffee and head back out until they have your table ready. We had almost an hour wait but it was worth it! We came in ordered or food and had thee most friendly and attentive service! This definitely goes down as some of the best customer service I've ever had! Now the food! My goodness the food is good! Their menu is big without being overwhelming! You will surely find something to suit your taste and your hunger level! I got the Fit for a Queen! Dad had the Broadway blues, and my mom had the Off the griddle! He loves blueberry muffins, and she loves corn muffins! It was perfect and the fact that they cut the muffins and grill them, served with butter! Geez! The grilled mashed are Devine, the French toast is so delicious! Oh and the portions are HUGE! This place! Just flat out scrumptious I tell ya. The hubby and I grabbed some brunch after dropping the kiddos off for the day. As soon as we stepped in, Mike, one of the owners, greeted us with a welcoming smile and firm handshake. We had about a five minute wait, and this was while they cleaned off the table. The place was full, but there wasn't a line, so we didn't feel rushed while eating our food. We went around 11:00~11:30 on a Friday. I had the Mexican omelet with a half portion of Coconut Macaroon French toast. My hubby had a cheese omelet with a half portion of Apple Caramel Cinnamon French toast. Okay, WAY too much food. The portions are extremely generous. We would have done well to split an omelet and a half portion of whichever French toast. I ended up bringing half the omelet and the sides home. A common mistake for Ball Square Cafe first timers. They have a nice selection of Mighty Leaf Tea flavors. The hubby was super thrilled about that. It's a self-serve set up for the beverages, but I kinda like it. With the size of the place, getting our own beverage was never a bother or inconvenience. The servers are very busy. I'm sure this helps them attend to customers and provide great service. Jason, Ryan Reynolds' twin (LOL), was great. He never left us wondering where he was. Great music, cozy decor, yummy food, solid customer service and smiling faces all around. We'll be back! read more

Hands down, one of my all time favorite brunches and I'm from Philadelphia where there are a handful of really great places, too. I had the Tri-Berry French toast and it was amazing. The berries were fresh, whipped cream was so good, and the portion was huge. Boyfriend had the crab meat benedict that came with GRILLED mashed potatoes and I'm not an egg kind of person but I loved it. It was perfectly seasoned and was so filling. Prices were so reasonable. I love Ball Square cafe. only downside is the wait!

Ball Square is a solid brunch spot, but doesn't live up to the hype or merit the wait. There's a full brunch menu, with everything you expect in the way of pancakes, waffles, omelettes, egg sandwiches, etc. Plenty of good vegetarian and low carb options. Nothing was stand-out, but nothing was bad. We didn't feel hurried to finish/leave, and the service was super friendly and laid back in general, which we appreciated. I can see how it might be frustrating if you're in a rush, since the server wasn't constantly checking in, but it was perfect for a chill catch-up brunch. One gripe was that we were offered coffee while we waited in line (~30min on a Saturday afternoon), and then charged for it with our meal. Plenty of other popular, no-reservation brunch spots (like Neighborhood) offer free coffee while you wait -- and have it out on the sidewalk so you don't have to walk into the restaurant to get it, plus sometimes cut up some bread or muffins to taste while you wait. We were surprised to have been charged for three coffees (at nearly $4 each), but were in a hurry and didn't want to cause a scene. It just felt petty! Not a big deal, but certainly worth being clear about when you let people know they can drink coffee while they wait. read more

I hate to give this place two stars, since I really do appreciate the place - serve yourself coffee, attentive (if abrupt) waitstaff, and a big menu. But I ordered a breakfast sandwich and I hated it, so I have to do what I have to do with the star rating. I ordered the "Pure Protein" sandwich. Sounds good from the description, right: Egg Whites, Grilled Tomato, Sautéed Fresh Baby Spinach, Salmon and Fresh Mozzarella Cheese Unfortunately, the salmon was in two small globs that fell out of the sandwich while it was sitting on the plate. The spinach wasn't wilted enough, so that also took on glob-like characteristics and slivered out of the sandwich the second I bit into it. The sandwich would've be better texturally if it was blended and served as a smoothie. I'll certainly be going back. I just won't order this sandwich again. read more

Rarely do I go to a restaurant and feel like I ate delicious home cooked food. This place does it right in terms of portions, taste, service, everything. There was this guy (owner?) who was very friendly and making sure the people waiting + the people eating were happy and made sure to tell us that the beverages are self serve in the back. The menu is huge with very reasonable prices and I couldn't choose at first. Finally we got: +Crab Benedict with nom nom grilled mashed potatoes yumm +Breakfast plate with 2 perfectly over easy eggs, amazing diced potatoes, more than enough toast and pork sausage +Tri-berry waffle (wow the fruit was so fresh and sweet) Everything was DELICIOUS. I came here for brunch with a friend on a Sunday morning, and somehow we were seated immediately, which was amazing, so I guess it pays off to be a party of 2 when there are several large parties waiting. First off, I loved that iced coffee was a menu offering. I'm glad that places are catching on and including that on the menu these days. My friend and I decided that we were going all-out for brunch, and boy did we ever! We each got a breakfast sandwich, a side of potatoes, and a side order of one of the specialty French Toasts. We also got a side of hollandaise to throw onto our food because, at that point, why not?!? OMG, it was delicious! I was in a food coma for hours after leaving the restaurant. It was also my first visit, so I was unaware that a "side" of French Toast was basically a full order. Don't get me wrong, I'm very grateful for the three meals I basically consumed for breakfast, but I just didn't expect it. The food was delicious, and it was a great value for what you get.
