There is nothing bad to say about Ball Square Cafe! Other than I wish I could get there more often. It is the cleanest restaurant aside from the best food you will ever eat. No matter what I have gotten in there was excellent!. If there is a line there are heaters above you to protect you from the cold and someone the owner is out there pouring you hot coffee. You can't co on. Check out the menu you can't go wrong! read more

Excellent service! Good was fantastic and again, service couldn't have been better. Highly recommend!

The hype is real! I found Ball Square on Yelp and had been meaning to try it on one of the times I visited my sister in college. The time came for my sister to graduate and I still hadn't eaten here--d'oh! As soon as my flight got in, I came straight here for a late lunch. I ate by myself and took a lot of pictures of my food and my server was fantastic! I ordered a waffle that was absolutely TOWERING with fruit and whipped cream. The fruit was all really fresh, and I was relieved it wasn't just a bunch of melon (my least favorite fruit). I hung out there for a little while after on my phone because I had to finish something, and they were very understanding. I was definitely never rushed. (Note that I did go during an off time, so there was no wait for a table.) Ball Square is a great brunch option and not to be missed if you're at Tufts or in the area! read more

Food is great, would definitely come here again and recommend it to people. The only thing I didn't like was that the service was a bit slow and some tables that came in after me got waited on before me. So it just needs to be a little more organized. read more

Everything you want in a brunch spot is here at Ball Square. The omelet I ordered was HUGE. The potatoes were yummy, plus service was great. Wish the place was bigger though because there was a wait and we had to stand outside when it was raining out so that wasn't super pleasant, but overall, great brunch spot if you have some time to potentially wait for a table. read more

I actually found this place off of a google search and it was the best decision I ever made! It's a pretty small place but it really packs a big punch! They hospitality is amazing, very warm and welcoming which made the experience that much more memorable! Now the food! I spent so much time contemplating on what to get because everything sounds so delicious and sure enough it was. No disappointment and the portions are hugeee! It's hard to leave this place without a smile! Thank you so much to the manager and the staff! Keep doing an amazing job! read more

I am sorry but they definitely don't know how to run a resturant. No attendants for those who come in, no list for those who are in line. They randomly pick parties that are easiest to arrange. Despite their years of running business, customer care is of their least priorities. At freezing temperatures, they freely waited people although they had tables available. You ask why? Because nobody cared! When we explained the situation to the waitress, she said that's how they do it!!! Disappointing read more

Ball Square does not earn five stars in my book, but TEN. I wanted to write this review as soon as possible so I don't miss any detail of the great experience I had. I was so stoked on coming because all of my friends kept saying how great the French Toast here was. Since it was my first time here, I was a little shocked and sad to see a wait outside Ball Square. My boyfriend and I didn't know whether you grab a number because it seemed like they were doing a "first come, first serve" seating basis. Anyways, as assumed, it was a first come, first serve system and we waited about 20-30 minutes in line, which is NOT bad compared to other places. While waiting, the owner, Mike, came out and told us the wait time and that drinks were self served. That's pretty neat that all of the coffees, teas, and water were self served. Once we were seated, we knew what we wanted to order. We ordered the coconut macaroon French Toast, the Tuscan omelet, and a side of fries. We also got a cup of iced coffee, which was very creamy. The food came out at a pretty good pace, which is always a plus in my book. But wow, let me tell you about the French Toast... It was AMAZING. Mike told us that it was the best seller at the restaurant and I can totally see why. The challah bread was soft and gooey on the inside, while the coconut flakes were charred on the outside, giving it a nice subtle crunch. The best of both worlds. Mike told us that we didn't even need syrup with the French Toast and we believed him!! It went so well with the three dollops of whipped cream that it came with. The whipped cream was dense, so it doesn't melt like usual ones. It had a nice vanilla flavor that paired nicely with the bread. On top of everything, it was finished off with some condensed milk and raspberry drizzle, which all went so well together. I love having both a savory and a sweet dish, so the Tuscan omelet was great to have to counteract all of the sweetness from the French Toast. It came with fresh mozzarella, mushrooms, basil, and roasted red bell peppers. I give mad props to places that serve mozzarella because I'm not a big fan of other cheeses. Everything was so flavorful by itself, that I barely needed ketchup, salt, or pepper. It also came with grilled mash, which was just a block of mashed potatoes, and 4 pieces of toast. We also ordered a side of French fries, which came out piping hot because they were freshly made. Overall, this was a 10/10 dining out experience. I'd also like to mention our server, Raul?, who was friendly, attentive, and always had a smile whenever he would come by our table. I haven't had a friendly server like him in a while. Mike also came by our table and had a small conversation, which really added to our dining experience. He's a great guy who makes everyone feel welcomed and as if we were apart of the family. Wish other restaurants would learn a thing or two from here. But I can't wait to be back to try other items because they all looked mouth watering! read more

Love that they open at 6:30 AM because I was starving and woke up hungry at 6, and was able to come here and fill that void in my stomach. At regular brunch hours there's always a line out the door, but at 6:30 AM, this place was empty. And the food is surprisingly good! It's nothing creative or new - just very solid renditions of eggs (and probably pancakes tho I didn't try it). I got the Moroccan eggs and added mushrooms - definitely do that because the mushrooms added a nice bit of umami to the sweet peppers and tomatoes (which are kind of flavorless). Personally found the peppers / tomatoes here more flavorful and less mushy than Sound bites but maybe it's just cuz I had the added mushrooms. They give you A LOT of eggs, and despite my ravenous hunger, I couldn't finish more than half the food. I subbed out fries for fruit and was surprised by the diversity of fruit they had! There were kiwis and mango and pineapple and strawberries and watermelon. read more

Brunch here was amazing! We had to wait in line for about 40 minutes at 11 am on a Saturday but they were efficient inside without making customers feel rushed while eating. The drinks were self serve (including water) and the atmosphere was a little bit tight between tables but it was worth it for the delicious food. The portions were really big and the food was all cooked to perfection. I also got an iced latte with my meal that was really good. Would highly recommend coming here for brunch, just be prepared to wait in line! read more

I try to visit Ball Square whenever Im in the Boston area. The food Ive tried is that good for me to return and there are so many things I want to try still! Service has always been friendly and I have to remind myself coffee and tea are self serve. They used to serve lobster benedicts many years ago, which was the first thing I tried here. They're known for their French toast and they make some of the best French toasts I've had. I'm not really a fan of shredded coconut either, but their signature French toast is the coconut macaroon flavor and I was amazed. It was delicious. They also serve a generous amount of housemade whipped cream. Next time, I hope I get to try their pear and goat cheese French toast. Come early or you're gonna be struggling to find parking and waiting in a long line. read more

Great breakfast menu,. Courteous service. Grilled Blueberry muffins to die for. Will be back.

Thank you Yelp for bringing me to Ball Square Cafe & Breakfast on my last morning in MA! Such a quaint little breakfast spot and I wish they had something reminiscent of this in NY. So everyone knows that Sunday brunch anywhere can be a dream and a nightmare. I ended up calling ahead just to see what the wait was like and they said about 30 minutes. When I got there the manager greeted me and the cafe was completely full and he ushered me two doors down to "stay warm" until there was an open table for my party-- which of course, I thought this was not only the sweetest but so thoughtful. After about 10 minutes we were brought over to the cafe and seated. Our waitress introduced herself and brought us the menus. They do things a little differently here and majority of their drinks are self serve -- which is super cool. So after a while I got up and proceeded to make my tea, grabbed an apple juice from the fridge and got a cup of ice water. They have a machine that squeezes the oranges for freshly squeezed orange juice but only the waiters can operate that. We ordered and within a few minutes large plates began to overtake our table. Every time I go out to eat I seem to get all the stares from everyone dining because I always look like a greedy butt but what it really is is that I am so tempted to try so many different items knowing I don't have enough room in my belly to put it. Oh well -- YOLO .. We had banana fosters brioche french toast which was to die for. Banana pancakes that were about the size of my head. My daughter wanted this waffle and it had about 15 servings of fresh fruit piled on covered with powdered sugar and whipped cream. Eggs, bacon, toast, bagels, you naamme it! lol Yummy yummy in my tummy .. I fell in love with this little place. I swear if you weren't so far we would have a standing brunch date every sunday morning :) read more

Was excited to see a Crab eggs Bene on the menu, my all time fav since so many places just heat up a crab cake and don't offer the fresh crab. BOY was I dissapointed....Betobd disappointed, I felt tricked!! The "crab" came either out of a cab from the 1960's or it was spoiled, either way, the ladies at the table closest to mine wrinkled their noses when the waiter passed by because of the heavy "fish" smell, a tell-tell sign seafood is not fresh. Best breakfast around.... Only thing is the wait is insane so get there early. There French toast and omelets are amazing 10/10

I had the Moroccan eggs and it was completely tasteless. Not only that, the veggies were soggy and I asked for my eggs over medium and got over easy eggs. If you are going to order it I would add mushrooms like the other reviews say, that was the only thing that made this plate edible. Besides that the server was nice and they do have a nice selection of fruit if you choose that as a side. read more

The breakfast here is BOMB. I came here early on a Monday (holiday) with my friend. He said that we would have to go early or there would be a line out the door, so we did and he was right! We both got lattes to drink and it was good. For food, I got the Shaved Steak Benedict with the diced potatoes and he got the Broadway Blues. We both devoured the food. The shaved steak was delicious and tender. Well seasoned and the hollandaise sauce was different then what I have tried from other places. I loved it! It was creamy and YUMMY. I will definitely come back here for breakfast/brunch in the future. Probably one of the top places I have been to and not overpriced. read more

I discovered this place while searching for somewhere to take my friend who was visiting from out of town. Going there for the first time it was definitely a little confusing figuring out the self-serve part of the restaurant but everyone was super informative and nice--not just our server. As far as the food--it was excellent! Their french toast might just be the best I've had! The portions were very large so both times I ate there I had to take food to go. I ordered a side of avocado and it was probably the biggest side of avocado I've ever seen at a restaurant! That being said, I'm giving them only four stars because while at non-peak times it is more relaxed, I visited when it was super busy once and didn't have the best experience we could have had. We were moved around from table to table and almost had too much interaction with the servers/host. When we were trying to get drinks we felt like we were cramped and in the way since servers were moving in and out of the kitchen, and it was just slightly stressful. I would recommend this place for a small group to grab breakfast or brunch. I wouldn't recommend it if you are looking for something super lowkey and quiet, because it is a small busy place. However, I'm almost positive they do takeout, if that interests you! read more

Come early for brunch! WAIT On a Saturday or Sunday, if you come around 9:00-9:30, you will wait less than 30 minutes. By the time we left around 11:00 AM the line was well down the block. The location is pretty small and diner style, so the line forms on the street. Mike, the owner, greets every new party, letting them know of the wait (which is very accurate) and tells guests they can self-serve coffee. However, it is not free! Hot coffee costs almost $4 (free refills), and iced coffee costs ~$2 (no refills). I wasn't aware of the prices beforehand. + COWBOY BENEDICT (SPECIAL) // This special eggs benedict came accompanied with bell peppers, onions, & bacon with grilled corn bread and the option for grilled hash browns or home fries. My boyfriend opted for the grilled hash browns and it was so good! I loved the combination of benedict, corn bread, and hash browns! + TRI BERRY WAFFLE // I asked for my waffle to come with their house made whipped cream, which made all the difference. They also do not skimp on the fruit here! I had plenty of strawberries, blueberries, blackberries, and raspberries with every bite of my waffle. I do wish the waffle was a little bit more crunchy! Because this place gets crazy busy, it is not a place where you want to linger and catch up with friends. Get in and get out so others can try the food here! read more

Sometimes you remember a place so deserving of an A+ rating that you have to come back to add a review four years later. This ain't no bull: this place is solid. I won't lie, moving to the Boston area after living in Chicago, Portland (Oregon), Portsmouth and a bunch of other awesome brunch places like Madison, WI, Detroit and KCMO, was...well...completely (f'ning) disappointing. :) I am not even joking -Boston your brunch game is kinda lacking, regardless of the pandemic. All that said, this brunch spot delivers. I imagine a time when the Boston area gets it's collective food game together. For inspiration- start here. And the fruit pancakes are highly recommended by my kids. read more

Cool little brunch restaurant. Quite small, and always crowded in the drink area. Self-serve coffee and tea for $3.50 unlimited refill was a very cool idea. They have great selection of teas. Coffee was only OK. I ordered the Mexican omelette, while my friend just got a breakfast platter with two eggs. However, they gave my friend's plate to another table, which caused us to wait a bit longer than necessary. I also found a avocado stem in my avocado inside the omelette, which I told the waitress immediately. I was slight disappointed at my experience as the restaurant has a very good review. read more

The service here is really magical. The owner, Mike, is well-loved and just seems like a genuinely great guy who tries to remember all of his customers and make them feel at home. Sarah G and I came here for breakfast last Thursday morning. It was about 8 a.m. and there were about three other tables. I went with the Western Omelette and Sarah had the corned beef hash. The Western omelette is basically a Denver omelette with ham and lots of bell peppers. It was nice they had red bell peppers and not just green bell peppers in it. I also enjoyed the onions in it. The egg was just so thin and pristine when we got it. They really know how to flip an egg! You have a choice of potatoes with the omelettes and I went with the brick of a mashed potatoes that's a bit garlicy and grilled. I know it's not mashed potatoes but man, it sure did taste like something I'd probably enjoy more for dinner. The waitress did check with me to make sure I knew it had garlic. I had to try it so yes, go for it if you love garlic mashed potatoes. I also ate a bit of Sarah's corned beef hash. Surveying the tables around us, this was definitely one of the more popular items. It was heavy and warming. Perfect for the cold brisk day ahead of me. She got it with grilled English muffins which were definitely different. The place looks newly renovated. You are allowed to server your own water and coffee. Iced coffee refills though cost extra. What I found fascinating about the place was the people in it. I guess this is a good breakfast date place. I saw a couple on what seemed to be on their "morning after" date complete with rumpled clothes from the night before. As well as a young single mom with a small toddler in tow on a date. The boy spent most of the morning running away and crying. The mom explained he wasn't used to strangers. Aw, hope love comes to both these couples. If not, there are always fluffy omelettes and wonderful corned beef hash! read more

This is a cute little cafe in Somerville that I discovered recently. It is a great place for weekend brunch! You know this place is good when you see the long line that goes out the door of people waiting to dine here. The owner of the restaurant is super friendly. He greeted each customer and even the ones who were waiting outside. The owner was very hospitable. He offered coffee to customers who were waiting for a table. Coffee at this restaurant is self served so you can grab a coffee before you get a table and just have your waiter put it on your bill later. I was craving something sweet for brunch that day. I ordered the banana and nutella french toasts. I also tried the chocolate chip pancakes. Both dishes were satisfying and delicious. The portion was also really big. They also have a lot of other items on their menu as well. I would definitely go back to try other delicious entrées! read more

Many years ago I left a five star review on Yelp of Ball Square Cafe. I have been back many times since then, always enjoyed great food and service, but never left another review until today. I took my mom to breakfast there this morning. The food was served promptly and was delicious. The thing that prompted me to write this review was our server. He was so polite, friendly, and personable. Before we left I asked him what his name was to let him know how pleased we were with him and thank him. He then said it was his first day working there! This is hands down my favorite brunch spot. There's always a wait, but it's totally worth it. All of their delight dishes (pancakes, French toast, Belgian waffles with mounds of fruit) are suuuuper good. They come with their homemade whipped cream, which is basically sweet butter and to die for. And I don't know how they do it, but their fruit is always impeccably ripe. You say pineapple/kiwi/watermelon is not in season? Ball square doesn't give a shit what you think. Expect to be wowed. Their savory dishes are also really good. I've had their eggs Benedict with turkey bacon on an English muffin - oh my god. And their mashed home fries!! They basically take mashed potatoes and grill the outside so that it has a crispy shell, and it is heavenly. Super flavorful - I could eat this all day. The owner Mike is this friendly Italian guy and he's very attentive to everyone, making sure they're all comfortable and has what they need. And if you come back often enough he'll remember you and make you feel cool and special. A lot of people compare this place to sound bites. I tried eating there once, the menu is pretty similar. I got a French toast dish and it was pretty good, but just doesn't compare. Stick with this place - you won't regret it. read more

Items Selected: Coffee Blueberry Scone Griddled Corn Muffin Whoopie Pie Pancakes Jelly Donut French Toast Coconut Macaroon French Toast Located along the main drag in Somerville, as 'locals only' a spot as one is likely to find in a metropolitan area the size of Boston, Ball Square Café was *the* surprise of a trip that saw forty-four stops throughout New England over the course of eight days, both as a result of the food and the service. Quite literally a place where "everybody knows your name," a Friday at 8:15 finding the spot slammed with locals and soon to generate a short queue, Ball Square Café has gained acclaim over recent years for offering a menu of signatures as well as specials that far outperform the typical café or diner while the serve yourself Coffee features no less than five flavors to go along with at least twice as many types of tea. Easily spotted as out of towners, the lack of a New England accent probably enough in this sort of place, it was with the assistance of a young man who grew up locally that decisions were made from a menu that offers no lack of variety, cooks in the semi-open kitchen no doubt underpaid given the tight quarters in which they operate with both skill and speed. Told that housemade Scones are "the best" by an elderly man near the door, a Blueberry version joined by a griddled Corn Muffin showing no sign that the fellow was false as both outperformed anything similar tasted in downtown Boston or Cambridge, those fancying flavored coffee are encouraged to explore French Vanilla or Hazelnut that are each well flavored without being overwhelming, the standard brew a good medium roast of which free refills are sure to leave patrons buzzing. Going all sweet on the menu, a small plate of late arriving bacon requested almost as a necessity to clear the palate, those interested in a true "signature" are encouraged to enjoy the Coconut Macaroon French Toast that bears an uncanny resemblance to the Italian Meringue Cookie, the Sugar Tossed Brioche lightly fried with Raspberry filling and Whipped Cream an equally diligent reminder of a classic Jelly Donut while the Dark Chocolate Pancakes are a truly over-the-top indulgence. read more

*Tips for newbies:* 1) If you're waiting to be seated or waiting in line, stay off of the black carpet (fire hazard I presume :) 2) As you're waiting to be seated, help yourself to drinks. The pumpkin spice coffee was absolutely superb. It is probably tastier than even my over-the-top Starbucks concoction. 3) Make sure that all members in your party are with you before requesting a seat. 4) If you get an omelet and have to choose between the chopped potato home fries or Omar's mashed and grilled hash brown... CHOOSE THE MASHED & GRILLED! It was herb-y in the best way...not aggressive, and extremely distinct and memorable. 5) If you're trying to decide between this place and its neighbor and rival, choose Ball Square Cafe! I found it to be cleaner, warmer, more welcoming, more fragrant, and more in tune with the little details (that matter)! Ball Square Cafe cares about the customer. I like that in a venue. If you're indifferent then feel free to go next door! 6) Whatever you planned on talking about with your party, will be null and void. For 2 hours, all my friends and I did was eat, talk about the food we were eating, and take pictures of food (ours and other folks') ---I haven't seen my friends in a while but we just too impressed with our overall dining experience and our plans to discuss NYE plans, never happened. *Pros:* 1) The owner, Mike, knows how he wants his business to run. He runs a tight ship! He has both customer and server/owner etiquette at the forefront of his mind. He was friendly and even brought my party a complimentary strawberry-shortcake Belgian waffle (just because) that we devoured! 2) The food is amazing! I am a stickler for ambiance, food presentation and food taste. Truth be told, I like food that gives a darn! I like food that does an additional mirror check before leaving the kitchen. Not only was the food at Ball Square Cafe delicious, but it was also beautiful! I took pictures of everything! 3) What we ordered: Nova Smoked Salmon Omelet, Artichoke Omelet, Celtic Omelet 5 stars for--- flavor, freshness, fragrance, friendliness, and the familial feel *The Only Con:* It's too late to add an additional door to keep out the inclement weather, but I wish there was some kind of partition or something to separate the diners from the elements (on such brisk days like today! 27 degrees F!) *I wonder if...* * ...they do outdoor seating in the summer time. I hope so. I will definitely be back to Mike's Ball Square Cafe! *... it was intentional to have the women busting the tables and the fellas taking the orders (I kind of liked the contrast as it ensured that every customer's attention was on the food and experience vs getting overly and inappropriately comfortable with the wait-staff) read more

My good deed did not go unnoticed today. While waking up at 5:30 am to scout for floral arrangements at a cement lot with a bride-to-be is not exactly my idea of sanity, I nonetheless found myself awake and ready to smell the flowers. After 20 minutes of pacing up and down aisles and looking for KK's perfect purple orchids, karma kicked in and I found myself at Somerville's Ball Square Cafe & Restaurant. This is not your typical cafe (as coffee is not their forte) ... or even breakfast joint for that matter. Unlike typical breakfast scenes, the exposed brick, granite tables, and understated decor at Ball Square has a welcoming effect. It gently suggests you sit down and ease into your morning as opposed to the hustle and bustle of most breakfast joints. The stainless steel self-serve coffee station in the corner was a minor eyesore but I easily overlooked it once our breakfast arrived. KK's Tri-berry Belgian Waffle was a sight to see. Sitting on top of a thick Belgian waffle were sliced strawberries, whole blackberries, raspberries and blueberries then topped off with homemade whipped cream and powdered sugar. The slight crunch of the waffle along with the tang of the fruits and sweetness of the whipped cream culminated and made food magic. I love when seemingly simple ingredients can make dishes aesthetically and gastronomically delicious. Always a sucker for french toast when Challah bread is involved, I did not think twice about ordering the French Toast with Caramelized Strawberries and homemade whipped cream. The toast was beautifully thick and soaked in Ball Square's secret sauce. There was a little too much sauce in my dish, threatening to overwhelm my "sweet" taste buds, but overall it managed to satisfy. Note to self: in the future ask for sauce on the side. We left the restaurant $25 poorer but full to the hilt and energized by our new find. For me, karma is rarely ever this delicious. read more

This was our first meal stop for our New England adventure weekend (except for Chik-Fil-A on the long drive lmao). We stayed with a friend in the area near Tufts and came here for brunch due to the MANY positive Yelp reviews. We were not disappointed. We found street parking very easily on a Friday morning pretty early. I assume it may be more tough on the weekends, but this little restaurant is in walking distance of the nearby neighborhoods. Our waiter was amazing. I loved him so much, enough so that we wanted to bring him along for the rest of our vacation. Lol. He was hilarious and friendly - wish I knew his name so I could give him a proper shout out. The food was delicious! My friend and I split the banana Nutella French toast. Incredible. And i got the eggs benny with the mashed potatoes. So delicious. It was also very affordable. I highly recommend this breakfast spot for out-of-towners and locals alike! read more
