Before Dawn car selfie in need of a wash!
    Dawn S.

I used to live near this place so I could walk which was nice. They do not take appointments so be prepared to wait during certain hours. I just went for a wash and blow dry. My sweet stylist, Silas, was nice. I could tell that she was fairly new to working with clients. They take classes for about 8 weeks before coming into the floor. She told me she started in January. You do the math. (It's March) ;) I really wanted someone to wash my hair. I mean who doesn't love that! One of the things I have always liked about this place was that there are instructors all around. I saw three of them that day. Many of the girls were new and the instructors came out to teach and actually step in to show them a technique. An instructor will always come to check your hair before you leave so don't worry! Just for a reference, my wash and blow dry was 10 bucks!! They take tips but cash only!! I felt horrible as I only had 2 dollars to give my girl. The instructor made me feel just fine about it. She told me I didn't even need to leave a tip. The girls just love having the experience on the floor. So be prepared to bring cash if you would like to leave a tip. $$$

Jess did my hair, she did so good! She knew her stuff and was super friendly. The atmosphere was awesome in the building! I love love my hair :)

Absolutely loved my haircut as much as the work on it Jonathan's work is beautiful and excellent customer service they were able to get me in even that I was late because I ended up at the wrong location , the manager was also super nice and it was just overall finally a great experience in a salon and most importantly I got what I wanted in my hair

I swore I would never go to another beauty school but today I decided to go to Baldwin. The instructors were professional and knowledgeable. Doing hair isn't easy, color correcting is even harder. I came in w a huge challenge for Amy amd Haley. This is a school they are learning and growing everyday and today they really did an amazing job on my hair. I really wish them the best when they graduate they are off on a good start. I couldnt be happier.

This is their website today. Make sure you ask before getting a service.

The student that did my hair was great, but I unknowingly walked into a $65 hair color session. Prices online are not accurate.

I have had balayages and cuts here and honestly it's not much different than getting it done at a regular salon.

Guess what, my lashes didn't perm at all, not even a curve. I lay down and basically the student put on the perm solution too early or did it poorly, no worries the instructor comes in and fixes it because they don't want to overprocess my lashes they don't leave it on that long that's fine. The student proceeds to do a poor hand massage and poor neck massage, that's fine, again learning. She then takes forever to clean up my eyes why because she applied the dye very poorly which required so much clean up that when I got up I still looked like a raccoon, that's fine, learning. I get up, my lashes didn't even curve. Not even a little bit. I'm upset obviously because I just spent 1.5 hours on this table to look EXACTLY THE SAME. The instructor comes in too explain what happened and again I get it but you didn't give me this explanation before I laid down? No disclaimers no nothing. She said okay my advisor isn't here but we want to make this right we want you to come in again and fix this. So NICOLE calls me this morning and is like I'm so sorry blah blah blah I was like okay I'll schedule my next appt, the instructor had mentioned complimentary. She's like no most we can do is 20% off, I was like alright please kindly leave me alone than.

Haircut- i wanted to get a trim, long layers, and face framing strands. I loved my haircut but it took much longer than i expected. I saw the reviews and people have said it took long so I made sure to have an ample amount of time, I was just starving haha. I appreciated the students for being so diligent and careful with the service. Instructors definitely knew what they were doing and checking the haircut. Would I come back? Yes i would. For the price, its for a good cause, and close to where i live!

It's clear the instructors and management treat their staff well. Leadership experts say doing that makes your employees transfer that joy to the customers. I'm also glad for the sake of the staff themselves. I'm not sure if the students want to keep their names private, so I won't share my stylist here, but she did an A grade job. She not only made me feel welcome and put extraordinary effort on my cut, she fascinated me by telling me all about what beauty school is like Unfortunately they don't take tips from cards, so I couldn't give my excellent stylist a tip. So I apologized to her for not bringing along cash. Next time I need to remember cash. Better than the chain stores at half the price and get you a welcoming and fun environment that makes feel at ease and satisfied.

The ambience awesome and we were promptly taken to a station upon arrival. We both just got haircuts. Yes, it does take longer than a normal salon, but for $15, I was impressed by them using high quality, delicious smelling products and the attention to detail. Instructor came over frequently to see how things were going. Both our cuts turned out great and our hair was styled as well! Having completed a few guides, I realized that my ability to learn "how to code" was hindered simply by my style of learning. I love interactive q/a style learning, which is what led me to MakerSquare. Of the different programs out there, the one thing I would urge others to consider is that they place a heavy amount of weight onto prework completed (how much work you've done ahead of time) and community-fit. If you're a solo worker and not a fan of collaborative environments, you may want to consider other programs. Anyways, long story short, I would whole heartedly recommend this program. As classmates, I had former programmers, retail store workers, a professional photographer and even a former elementary teacher. Out of the program, each of the students were working as professional front-end engineers (junior developers) within weeks of graduating. So safe to say, MakerSquare has a great professional network, and they know how to teach code. The classroom environment (the location on Congress ave) was a bit cramped at times. But from what I've heard the class size is now capped at 18, vs. 30 or so when I went through. All the 'issues' I had (space constraints, less than ideal student:instructor ratio, and focus on advanced concepts (algorithms and data structures) has been completely addressed. According to the staff, Cohort 5 is operating on an almost night/day difference of curriculum than what I had. So not only do I give the program 5 stars, I would (and likely will) retake the course to take advantage of their newest curriculum.

In short, I'm very happy! Though I'm not programming on a daily basis, I was able to get into the…read moreSt. Louis startup scene which was my main goal before enrolling at MakerSquare. I've also built a really awesome network of programmers and startup gurus in St. Louis and I believe that's thanks to MakerSquare! :-) I joined in Winter 2013-2014 (Cohort 3 Represent!). My reason for joining originally was not initially to become a software/web developer. Rather, I wanted to be able to communicate better with programmers that I worked with. I wanted to gain better access to the startup network. And most importantly I have a lot of ideas that I wanted to explore on my own - I didn't want to have to rely on finding a developer to build my ideas and turn them into a reality. I came out of the program having learned web-development with a strong emphasis on solid software development skills. Here's what I loved about MakerSquare: Curriculum: I was impressed by how much I learned. I literally had no experience in programming and I can now build web applications that ACTUALLY work. Not just simple interactive sites, but fully dynamic applications that work heavily with javascript on top of a rails framework. Moreover, all of this was taught with a very clear emphasis on test driven development (from the beginning) and solid software development principles. Instructors & Culture: They actually cared about the students and our progress and they were just all-around cool people. The culture at MakerSquare was actually a huge focus in the organization. I think what I loved most was learning how to learn all over again. I gained a new confidence that I've never had. The energy was also great, everyone had awesome ideas - from students to staff. Feedback: I would have liked to have more experience with Ruby and really learning how to code w/algorithms and such vs. w/Rails which is just teaching you the framework. From what I gather, Rails is now being treated as a detail vs. a core of what we learned. When we learned rails, it was about utilizing the framework for its ActiveRecord and quick-to-web functionality. MakerSquare still teaches web development (rails/mvc, http, javascript, etc) but now only after teaching other concepts that are applicable not just to the web, but to all software (test-driven development, SOLID principles, application boundaries, decoupling, databases, interfaces, software architecture, etc). I would have loved a deeper problem-solving skillset through exposure to algorithms. Looks like I was one cohort shy of that. MakerSquare now integrates algorithms and algorithmic thinking from day 1. Finally, MakerSquare was split into two nearby locations (Congress & Brazos). The extra space was nice, but it felt disconnected and I think it kept our cohort from being as close as some other cohorts have been.
