Stopped by Balboa Steaks in Newark and was immediately greeted by a friendly young man at the counter--possibly the owner. That kind of warm welcome makes a great first impression. I ordered the sandwich called The Balboa, and it did not disappoint. Flavorful, hearty, and made with care. You can tell they take pride in what they serve. Definitely worth a visit if you're in the area and craving a great cheesesteak

Love a good Cheesesteak? If so, run to Balboa Steaks! Our first visit exceeded our already high expectations. Perfect perfect perfect roll - tasted, looked, and felt like a Sarcone roll, but did not confirm that it was. The most tender shaved ribeye, the perfect amount of copper sharp evenly throughout. One size - Based on the size we could have split one since it was lunch but can't say I'm sorry we didn't. Service was good and it looked spotless inside with a Philly theme. We cannot wait to go back!

Service was quick. Their roll was good. More than enough cheese. The steak itself should have been shaved better-Large chunks throughout were tough. Overall, disappointing for the cost. Parking was also a challenge. Nothing available in front of the shop.

Recently, my family got Balboa steak sandwiches for dinner and we were not disappointed. My husband got the beef cheesesteak and I got a chicken cheesesteak with sweet peppers and pickles; it was delicious! Growing up in Delaware County Pennsylvania we were used to Philly style cheesesteaks, which we thought were the best, and still are very good. However, my husband decided to try Balboa steaks for the first time and I must say these were the best steaks sandwiches, especially a chicken cheesesteak, that I have ever had. I was surprised that they come on a very nice sesame seed long roll and the flavor was wonderful, bursting with wonderful flavor and the perfect amount of yummy cheese you can see. This will definitely be our go to place for cheesesteaks now; thanks to all the folks at Balboa steaks; keep up the great work!

In the end it was good food, other than stale chips, but the service could have been better.. it's a cool place/vibe just kinda average overall given this..

The booth we originally sat at made us feel too squished & hot, so we changed to a table which made us feel a lot better (regarding the heat) Alyssa was our server and she was great, however the service was a bit slow (not her fault, seemed like the kitchen?) We dined in on a Friday but we arrived early around 4:30. We were the only people in the one dining area with two others at the bar so not sure why the food took so long. However, the timeliness (& the heat) was my only complaint. The beer was great as well as the food! We also had two different managers come to us to make sure we had everything we needed, which was great. Would recommend.

Also, if you've read my prior reviews, you know I always want my water glass filled and the waiter made sure that was the case. It's a small detail that added to the overall comfort of the meal. The ambiance of the restaurant was warm and inviting, creating a relaxed setting for dinner. The food was well-prepared and flavorful. The veal meatballs were tender, the olive oil and sun-dried tomato dip for the bread was unique and yummy, and the mushroom agnolotti stood out as especially delicious. In fact, I can't wait to go back and have it again. Also, since it was Valentines weekend they added a cute little lips design on top of my drink. Another memorable touch was the mini firework placed on the butterscotch custard to celebrate my birthday. It added a bit of fun to the end of the meal and made the occasion feel special. My partner had the cannoli for dessert and it was definitely enough for two! Overall, Taverna delivered a very enjoyable dining experience, and I would be happy to return.

They sell a lot of their own merch so that's what you first see when you walk in. They have a bar area as well. The dining area towards the back is very spacious. And they have seating to accommodate small-large groups. The dim lighting adds to the calm vibe of the restaurant. The service is so fast. I feel like every item came out so quickly. And the servers checked in pretty frequently to clear the table, ask you if you need another drink, dessert, etc. it did feel a bit rushed. As a starter they give you their Ciabatta bread and the sun-dried tomato oil. The oil was DELICIOUS. I literally bought a jar to take home. For my drink I got the Fresca. It was good, very refreshing. For my entree I got the Linguini & Clams. It was good, could've used a bit more salt but the sauce was good. For desert I got the boozy affogato and it was delish. Would definitely dine here again if I'm ever in the area.
