I've been looking for a really good pistachio sans rival for a while, and Bakes & Pastes absolutely nailed it. Their Pistachio Sans Rival is so good, and I'm just happy it's something I can get regularly instead of only for special occasions. If you don't want to commit to a whole cake, their Silvanas are basically smaller portions of the sans rival. The pistachio is my favorite, but the cookies and cream flavor is just as delicious. They also sell individual cake slices, and I always end up getting the ube. It's consistently moist, flavorful, and the perfect portion when I'm craving something sweet. If you're a fan of Filipino desserts, Bakes & Pastes is definitely worth a visit. read more

I am not exaggerating when I say that the Zion cake here is the best chocolate cake I have ever had in my entire life. The cake itself is super rich and moist and the chocolate cream on top is so decadent and high quality - but at the same time it's not too sweet. I definitely will be getting future birthday cakes here. The silvanas are really delicious too! We ordered an assorted box which comes with cookies and cream, pistachio, and cashew. The cookies are nice and buttery with wafery like texture. Everything here is so delicious and highly recommend!!! read more

Whenever I crave a moist chocolate cake, Red Ribbon or this place is my go-to. Their crinkle cookie is the best I've ever had. Every item is so moist and not overly sweet, especially their double chocolate cookie with a hint of saltiness. The prices are a bit much ($3~ for a single cookie ) but honestly, they have the best cakes and cookies. ‍ Their online ordering might be a bit backed up because they almost never have same-day or next-day pick up, so I suggest just going there early. read more

Bakes and Pastes is in a small shopping center with parking in the front and back of the building. It's cute little shop. There's no place to sit and eat. The AC was on blast and it felt really good because it was a hot day. I ordered assorted Silvanas, Dubai chocolate bar and Zion cake. They were all delicious and not too sweet for me. It was my first time having Dubai chocolate and it was different, but good and crunchy. The only thing is that it is pricey, but these are premium products. Even the packaging looks really cool. Hands down the BEST Silvanas and Sans Rival I've ever had. The Silvanas have the perfect texture: crunchy, light, and airy meringue with a rich buttercream filling that's not overly sweet. The Sans Rival is equally amazing. They definitely don't skimp on the cashews, and every bite is loaded with that delicious nutty flavor. You can tell they use quality ingredients and take pride in what they make. We bought a dozen of the Assorted Silvanas planning to keep them in the freezer and enjoy them over a few days. That plan didn't last long. We ended up finishing the entire box on the drive home! We loved the Classic and Pistachio Silvanas! I've already been telling friends and family about this place because good Silvanas and Sans Rival are hard to find, and these are exceptional. You can really taste the love and care that goes into every batch. We are looking forward to coming back soon! read more

History

Established in 2020.

Born Out of Cravings We are a husband and wife duo. We started our business during the pandemic, it was an unplanned business, but we prayed for it. I, myself, Zarah is a certified sweet tooth. During the lockdown, I was craving for desserts, but I couldn't go anywhere, so we tried to experiment on our own. All our products were just pandemic cravings. It started with Silvanas, Yema Cake, Dream Cake, Sans Rival. We did not intend to sell for business as it was just a simple craving and experiment! Until my sister posted it on her Instagram story and people got curious and have been trying to order. We were hesitant to accept orders at that time but eventually we gave in. And since then, we have not stopped in making new recipes and as the saying goes, the rest is history. TONS of credits go to Mark for his sleepless nights to fulfill all orders. We give all Glory to Jesus! “For we walk by faith, not by sight.” 2 Cor 5:7

There's a discount section for older bread and pastries, but I am not sure when they get put out. Also to note, if you want a box, you're going to have to buy at least 15 pieces. I bought 10 and asked for a box and the lady flat out told me no. I can understand if it was the policy, but there was a little bit of attitude in the response. And for a place that supposedly pumps these things out, it kind took her a while to get some from the back and come back with them. So docking a star for service, but still coming back.

Knead closes at 1pm on weekdays (Monday closed, till 9pm Sat & Sun), and being approximately 30 minutes to close, two boxes of assorted donuts were left to choose from. Knead's Dubai Chocolate donut was a whopping $8! I tried to haggle the price down, both individually or with another donut, to no avail. No way was I planning to buy a whole box, either. Prices vary around $6-$8. Aware prices have gone up everywhere, that's still too much, in my summation, for donuts. In addition, not being a big donut guy, I don't foresee being a frequent customer. Knead Donuts does sell beautifully crafted donuts, which would satisfy even the most critical sugar junkie, but with premium pricing attached to each donut, can't justify the money spent, for my needs.

I have never bought a whole Black Forest cake in the past and the first one I buy happens to be eggless. So cool! And this was my very first time eating an eggless cake. Even cooler! They are closed on Mondays so I had to pick up the cake on Sunday. It was perfect because I was coming home from Carlsbad so it was on my way.
