It's not that often that you can find bakeries offering Japanese-style cheesecakes and castella cakes. Cheesetella is a spot that offers both of these unique and fluffy desserts. I recently got to try two of their popular desserts: the Original Cheesetella and the Chocotella. I personally liked the Original Cheesetella best. It was light, fluffy, and airy with a soft melt in your mouth texture. I loved the delicate, spongy texture. The Chocotella had a nice chocolate flavor, but the texture was a bit drier and overall not as good as the Original Cheesetella. Was walking around the source and noticed this cheesecake place on the first floor. I saw they had the burnt basque cheese cake and wanted to try it out. I was expecting it to be similar in price as the other cheese cakes at 17 but it was $24. But oh wells. I liked that it was soft and fluffly. I didnt even need to chew too much. It also isnt very cheesy which was probably the best part. I saw the other ones had cheese cheese in it and that wouldve sent me to the toilet. I've seen this shop a few times I've been to this plaza and today I've decided to try it. I was expecting something more like Uncle Testsu and was surprised to see that they only have 3 stars. I decided to bite the bullet and try it out. After reading few reviews, I opted for the creamtella and thank god I did. The Castella itself is soft and fluffy since it is a sponge cake but I can imagine by itself would be not enough flavor and maybe a bit dry. The creamtella alleviates this by shoving a cream between a horizontally cut castella. The cream makes it better but overall, the meal is too heavy for me with not enough flavor. If the cream was milkier, it would've been a different story. Also the sizing is huge! It's practically a cake made for 4-6 people which makes sense since it costs $13. I would've preferred a smaller portion size for cheaper but there were no other option. Needless to say, I would save my calories for something else next time. read more

My friend hyped up this place so we stopped by. It's a small place, grab and go, not really any seating but it's in the Source so it's easy enough to find seating nearby. It was a little pricey, but it's a relatively large loaf so it's understandable. However, it was pretty dry and lacked in flavor. It tasted like it was maybe sitting out for a while. I was intrigued by the Castella Cakes, so got one original ($11). The cake itself isn't really big, approximately 8x5inches. It's good for about 2-3 people as a snack. Once I bit into it, I realized how plain the cake was. It's basically a sponge cake --that's it. It was so dry and plain that we immediately went back to get a cup of cream on the side for $2. The cream really helped and it even had a milk flavor to it. Overall, it's pricey for a simple sponge cake. The more popular item is their cheesecake, so that's probably the better choice here. Tried their most famous Cheesetella, for me, it's basically a lightly sweetened sponge cake. Over the years I had bought Uber cheesetella for a friend's birthday, it's definitely more photogenic but taste wise, I wasn't impressed. Then one day I was really craving dessert and they happened to have only original cheesetella and cheesecake so I gratefully took the cheesecake. This location is kind of strange with its setup. You order and never see the person inside throughout the whole process. There is a lot of signage up covering the plastic so you just pay and get your baked good under the glass. Something felt kinda weird and impersonal about this to me. But anywayssssssssss, this is a grab and go place so it's mostly about the eats. I've had their chocolate at another location & loved it. But this time, I came for the name sake Castella with cheese in it...THE Cheesetella. I actually enjoyed this quite a bit. It might not sound great putting cheese into this light & fluffy dessert, but it worked really well. You get a huge (imho) block of the baked good which I actually divide and freeze into small portions. Loved the flavor and would get the cheesetella again...but I still like the chocolate best! This place is honestly a disappointment every time I have been. I always have hopes when coming here but this is probably it for me at Cheesetella. The last time I came was with my in laws because we wanted to introduce them to something new. After having dinner upstairs we walked here to split a cheesecake. We got their seasonal Ube Cheesecake, which was $15. The cheesecake ended up being very small. We asked for an extra box which they said would cost an additional $1. We also asked for forks and napkins but they they were out of napkins and only would give us 2 forks. The cheesecake ended up tasting dry, old and the ube flavor tasted artifical. There's only one employee working. Such disappointment. It is definitely not worth it to drive all the way to the Source, find parking, and walk to this place. Barely worth it if you are already there having dinner. Also, the place is really just a stand. You walk up to order and they just package your item. Aside from some areas with chocolate chips that were decent, most of the cake was fairly dry. I liked the chocolate flavor, but had to use whipped cream to make it more enjoyable. The size was decent and fed 2 people over the course of a few days as dessert. From now on, I will just stick to ordering the creamtella, or making sure that I have whipped cream at home. Sadly, my recent experiences have been nothing short of disappointing, and it's clear the quality has plummeted. The last time I visited, they handed me a corner piece from the baking tray that was noticeably 10-15% smaller than usual. I decided to give them another chance, but this time I got the cheese version of their cake. Big mistake. The cake was served cold and dry, and the cheese wasn't even melted, as you can see from the photo. Not worth it for $12! It looked unappetizing and tasted just as bad. Honestly, you can get a regular cake from the grocery store and eat it with three slices of cheese--it will taste the same. The location is a small booth with several signs, and there are premade, preboxed cheesecakes at the location. You can walk up to the counter and make your order, but I had to squat down to somewhat see the person behind the register. We got a strawberry cheesecake since it was the special of the day and it was immediately handed over to us. We walked to another location since it didn't seem like there was any seating, and we took at a bit. The cheesecake was extremely light and fluffy, almost with a milky consistency. Cheestella is one of my favorite dessert cake. Light, fluffy, not too sweet, with a layer of savory American cheese. They increased the price to $11 (used to be $9,then $10), shrunk in size ( cake used to fit the entire box but now there's a whole empty part of the box in the height AND width of the box. Cheese used to be 2 strips of thick chunk of cheese in the cake. Now it's only 1 very thin line. Just compare my pics of the cakes. Why I said that because if it's airy it's when they use many egg whites and not eggs with cream cheese as much.
