It's a little old-fashioned, very affordable, and serves delicious meals--either with or on their homemade bread. Deciding what to eat was no easy task because the menu offerings all sounded delicious. My wife and I visited from Texas on Friday, July 14, 2023. We were promptly greeted by Lauren who told us about their delicious pastries. My wife had the cherry turnover and I had the orange/cranberry muffin. Without asking, Lauren warmed up our order and brought it to our table. DELICIOUS! We stopped at BB twice, once for a dozen mixed donuts and the second time to get breakfast for the road. Excellent both times. The donuts were fresh and tasty. Breakfast sandwiches are very good, my breakfast burrito was tasty with the green chili sauce on the side. Bakers Bakery is almost a home away from home. My husband and I are in the process of moving/retiring to Custer and hence eat breakfast or lunch at Bakers at least a few times a week when in town. We've made multiple trips over the last couple of years and will continue to visit Bakers just as often. Their food is filling and if you leave hungry its because you didn't partake of a pastry which are all fresh and tasty. The service from the girls is spot on and they're friendly to boot. Well worth the wait if its full to overflowing with tourists...just be patient. read more

Cute, small, local bakery. We went early on a Sunday and it was not crowded. We got donuts, coffee, and a 7 layer bar. Everything was very tasty! Their donuts were soft, pillowy, and very fresh. They were much better than your typical donut shop donuts. They 7 layer bar was of course really good too: coconut, chocolate chips, and a strong maple flavor. It's served cold and has really nice texture. There coffee is comparable to any craft coffee place and better than Starbucks! Overall we would definitely come back when in the area! read more

Not many breakfast choices in Custer but you don't need any more than Bakers Bakery and Cafe. I had a ham and cheese omelette that was very big and very delicious. Came with hash brown potatoes and I had sourdough toast. But don't over eat because the bakery part of this establishment is over the top awesome. Cinnamon buns as big as a plate, sticky buns to match. Donuts, eclairs, bear claws all made fresh. Unfortunately I couldn't try them all but the sticky buns are amazing. read more

Not sure where to begin. We arrived at 10:45am on a Saturday looking to get breakfast. We were told they stop serving breakfast at 11am and they seemed really put out that people were still wanting breakfast. In fact, several customers left when they were told that breakfast service was over. Even more customers left when they came in to get fresh pastries, caramel rolls, cinnamon rolls, etc and were told that they had run out. The owner or manager was really abrupt with customers even telling them that they should get up earlier if they wanted those items, or if they wanted breakfast. She also told people that no one in Custer serves breakfast past 11am. That may be true, in which case, this would seem like a great time to cater to people who like breakfast a little later on the weekends instead of being rude to them. Many restaurants have brunch hours that extend until 2pm on the weekends because people don't HAVE to "get up earlier" on the weekends... especially when they are on vacation in a tourist town. Anyway, it is a missed opportunity to have such a short breakfast service, and to not make enough pastries for the weekend crowd, and then to have such a rude demeanor towards guests. I've never seen such crabby customer service. In the hour that we sat there, this woman lost as many customers as she gained... meaning she could have doubled her profit instead of chasing customers away. Anyway... the food was good. The waitress was great, though obviously stressed out. I would eat there again if not for the bad vibe. read more

This was our first and last visit. We came in at 2:30 in the afternoon for a late lunch (they close at 3:30). The entire staff was obviously ready to be done for the day, and that's fine as I'm sure their days are long but I still expect good service. I would not be writing this review but my first bite into my burger I found a bread bag twisty tie. Waitress never checked to see how our food was. She just dropped the ticket on our table. When I placed my credit card on the table she finally returned and I had to tell her about the twisty tie. She processed the transaction and as I signed the receipt the hostess came to halfway apologize and offered to rerun the transaction and comp the burger. (I did finish eating the meal so I didn't really care and didn't want to waste my time.) Someone else who seemed a bit higher up tried to apologize as well and offered some desserts and explain why the foreign body landed in my burger (they assured me it wasn't IN the burger or off the floor). And also explained how it has happened before and I guess the cooks just don't listen. Anyway, I was not looking for a free meal but at least a teachable moment and some type of assurance they would change their practices to ENSURE it would not happen again. But what do they care or really what do I care since I'm just passing through town and won't be going back. We arrived at Baker's Bakery & Cafe in the late afternoon for lunch. It was our last day in the area. We were immediately seated and the service was very friendly. I had the Jalapeño Ranch Burger, which was amazing. It was cooked perfectly, had a good selection of toppings, and not to mention their homemade buns! Our group also had the burger and fries along with fish & chips. Everything we had was perfection, by far the best food on our trip. If we had only known, we would have made the drive to this place regularly! When preparing to leave we ordered pastries. Of course at this time most of the best breakfast ones, like caramel rolls, were gone. But what we did have was all incredible. The cookie was plate-sized and very moist. The other delights were all perfect. If I lived any closer, this would be a dangerously regular spot for me. I feel like I could move to this town and be happy. Perfect example of a small town diner! We just missed breakfast, which we were pretty excited for but we settled for their wraps and burgers which were also good 7/10. Service was fast and friendly and best part of this dining experience is they welcomed my dog inside!!! He's pretty well behaved so doesn't beg or jump around- just chases flies, but it is as awesome to be able to dine inside with him there since it's pretty hot out and there's no dining outdoor option. Baker's Bakery is our favorite breakfast spot in Custer. But today we tried it for lunch and were not disappointed at all. Their burgers are great especially since they are served on their homemade hamburger buns. Their slogan is You'll Love Our Buns. They are right. Wife had the Philly Cheese steak with fries. It was huge. I keep trying to get the owner to add grits to the breakfast menu and she laughs and asks if I wanted sweet tea as well. Sure would be nice but just got a chuckle. This is a great eatery in Custer for breakfast and lunch. Food comes out in a reasonable time and it's hot. Staff are friendly and keep checking to make sure you have everything you need. Oh they are a bakery but once the doors open the showcase full of baked goodies don't last long. Love their cinnamon rolls, caramel rolls and Apple fritters. Will be back soon. read more

The service and food was very good. The owner was so rude to her employee who was trying to do so many things at once. Poor girl was so flustered and almost in tears. This lady is definitely not a people person and should go to anger management. Just so rude. We will probably never go back because of this reason. We are in Custer for the 2022 Tesla Rally. Met up with some friends and I ordered the Mushroom and Swiss Burger well done with fries. My burger was perfect! The most flavorful tasting burger on their homemade buns! The seasoned fries were also done perfectly! The have the best tasting Ranch dressing! Cute setting. Everyone was super friendly! We stopped in quickly on our way into Custer State Park. The coffee wasn't the best. It almost tasted like dirty water, but the caramel roll was worth it. It was actually the size of my head. We enjoyed every bite of it on our road trip. They also have a case full of pastries that you can order for dine in or takeout. They do have a sign that states their business will be slow because of new laws about their employees. The girls at the counter had to have been all of 12, but I assume someone in their family owns this place. Emily our waitress was top notch! Service was great. Had a cream cheese cinnamon roll, caramel cinnamon roll and breakfast sandwich. Food came out very quick and was delicious. Only negative things I have to say is the eggs on the sandwich tasted like an egg patty and not freshly scrambled eggs. Salivatingly Scrumptious! I can see why Rachel Ray said it was the best breakfast in South Dakota. Be forewarned- there is ZERO social distancing or mask wearing going on here. For us, it was worth the risk. The food is out of this world fantastic! We couldn't finish it all, but we are happy we even had the chance to sample a few bites! Over the few days my group ate here, we ordered the breakfast burrito with green chiles, pancakes, biscuits and gravy, meat & cheese omelette, western omelette, caramel roll, and a couple seven layer bars. Breakfast Burrito w/ green chili: 7/10 not the best breakfast burrito I've had but still decent. Beware that the green chilis are pretty spicy! Pancakes: 8/10 served with a choice of meat (got bacon and sausage) all around an ok pancake, both meat options were fantastic. Biscuits & Gravy: 6/10 nothing about them seemed like they were homemade. They were still delicious but the gravy seemed canned and there wasn't nearly enough sausage. Omelettes: (?/10) both people who ate them said they were good! Served with hashbrowns. Caramel Roll: (4/10) the topping on the roll was tasty. The roll itself was dry/not fresh. I wouldn't order again. 7 layer bar: (9/10) didn't beat my all time favorite one but it was still damn good! Has some nice height to it as well. Edit: Forgot to mention the fantastic service!
