From the ambiance (modern chic meets rustic charming, perfect lighting, lovely room flow) with nice jazzy music playing in the background - to the food (lovely selections [elk medallions, flatbread pizza fresh salads); we truly enjoyed our experience at the Mercantile! (But if you're looking for only bison, don't have any kids with you and willing to wait a hot minute, check out my review for Buffalo Dreamer.) If you do have kids with you, are willing to work your way around the crazy construction, or just want to try the coolest tap room around in addition to a bite to eat, the Mercantile & Taproom is your place! Firstly, I went there for the kombucha. It did not disappoint! Ask for the kombucha flight... it was incredible! Second, we each had the bison-elk burger and the cranberry stuff on it was... Oh. My. Word. I can't say what my tastebuds were doing to the food in my mouth and keep this review PG. The gluten-free bison/elk burger could have featured a GF bun, but I just wasn't feeling the extra bread so I got it without. The cheese sauce on top was just oh-so creamy delightful. And while broccoli salad may sound weird, it was actually freaking delish! The only issue I had with the burger was since I didn't get a bun to soak up all the juices, they disintegrated the paper lining in the basket. Pretty sure I ate a little extra fiber. Hubs got a non-alcoholic Margherita (although they can make it fully loaded if you wish), the bison-elk burger with all its gluteny-bun goodness, and the soup of the day, which he said was easily hands-down the best soup he's every had in a restaurant. (That's high praise considering the potato soup experience we had in Knoxville!) If you're in Hot Springs, passing through, or just want somewhere awesome to eat dinner, go here. Go early, as other reviewers have noted they may run out of ingredients. That tends to happen when a restaurant makes everything from fresh ingredients.

We were visiting from North Carolina and celebrating our anniversary, and the entire experience made the evening incredibly memorable. From the moment we arrived, the host team was warm and welcoming. Although we were about 15 minutes early, our table was already prepared--a small detail that showed genuine care and attention. Our wonderful server, Teagahn, was full of smiles and positive energy. She took exceptional care of us throughout the evening and made us feel completely at home. The food was spectacular and far exceeded our expectations. We've experienced everything from hole-in-the-wall gems to high-end restaurants such as Michael Mina, and Skogen ranks very high on our list--honestly, even better than Hell's Kitchen. Every plate placed in front of us was thoughtfully prepared, beautifully presented, and full of flavor. The lobster salad and lobster bun were delightful starters. Our swordfish and filet were cooked perfectly, with balanced flavors and well-proportioned servings. What elevated the experience even further was watching Skogen's remarkably talented young kitchen team--mostly in their late teens and early twenties--handle a very busy dinner service like seasoned professionals. They were focused and polished, yet still friendly and personable. A special shoutout to Dominic, Teagahn, Rosalinda, Lance, and Joseph, the executive chef and owner. The combination of amazing food, genuine hospitality, and an outstanding team made our anniversary dinner one we will not forget. Our entire experience at Skogen was exceptional. It is highly recommended and absolutely worth planning your visit around!

They constantly check in on you, and provide a very positive environment, 10/10 service. The interior is fun, they have plenty of seating indoors and outdoors, there are random climbing decor, trinkets, paintings, and it's just a fun atmosphere. We ordered the fish and chips, fried green beans, pub sandwich with smashed potatoes and bread pudding. The fish was perfectly battered, it was crispy, light and the sauce they served with it was perfect. We absolutely loved the fried green beans, they were crispy and tasted amazing with their housemade garlic parmesan and spicy ukranian sauce. The spicy ukranian is a slightly tangy and creamy sauce. The pub sandwich had a good crunch from the citrus slaw, good tang from the pepperoncini and the bread was so soft. They also have 1990 rootbeer and it is amazing. The real star of the show was the bread pudding. I have never really been a fan of bread pudding but this one is a must. It is warm, soft, and just the perfect texture. The top is sugary with a little crunch and topped with whipped cream. They don't put nuts or raisins. I absolutely loved it. Definitely will be back for the amazing service, rootbeer, fried green beans and of course the bread pudding!

Glad we did Our hostess wasn't as friendly as I'd have liked but everyone has an off day. Our server was attentive and kept us feeling important. Food. The ribeye was tender and flavorful. There was a fair amount of fat but ribeye does. The chili is very good and pairs well with the red potato smashers. The Cuban was also a good choice. My wife loved it as did my son who had to finish it for her. Portions are on point with the price. No complaints. We sat outdoors and other than the flys which no real way to stop them it was a nice setting. This stop was on a long distance family vacation and was on our highlights.

If I could, I would give Powder House 6 out of 5 stars. My wife and I had an amazing time there tonight. Our server was Emily and she was an absolute gem. She suggested all the right meals and we were both blown away by the quality and taste of everything. I went in planning to get a steak, but at Emily's suggestion, I ordered the bacon-wrapped buffalo filet mignon. It was cooked to absolute perfection--every bite was tender and juicy. It ranks among the best steaks I've ever had, so you can take that for what that's worth. My wife had the chicken alfredo and said it was one of the best she's ever had, too. I would highly recommend getting reservations if you plan on coming. This was a meal and experience we will talk about for many years to come. If we ever make it back to the Black Hills, we will most definitely be stopping by.

The ham tasted like cooked in brown sugar and honey which complemented the more savory slightly salty bacon bits. The bacon had a drier texture and more like crumbles vs chopped bacon pieces but worked well with the other ingredients. Mushroom was grilled and added an earthy flavor which balanced the heavier meat ingredients. The side of potatoes was really good, too. It was cut in cubes, lightly coated with some kind of starch and fried. The coating has the flavor of seasoned curly fries. Lightly crispy on the outside but soft on the inside. I chose rye from the bread options. The french toast was also yummy; cinnamonny and eggy flavor but without being overly soaked in custard nor soggy. This was a side order for additional cost. The pancakes tasted like it had sweet cream and had a nutty hint of flavor. More dense than fluffy but was good. Reasonable prices for the quality and amount of the food. Staff were nice and friendly. Great ambiance, too. The restaurant has a very cozy homey feel with the country style decor. Windows wrapped around most of the dining area. Plenty of parking. Highly recommend if you're around Keystone South Dakota or nearby area.
