If you're visiting Mount Rushmore and looking for a place to eat before or after your visit, I can't say enough about the Powder House restaurant. It is a must stop. Service was really good from the time I called to be added to the waitlist to our hostess all the way to our server. The food came out at a reasonable time. Ordered: -Kids spaghetti -Kids cheeseburger and fries -Ribeye- a little chewier but still a great cut. -Prime rib made perfectly very flavorful I was super surprise and highly recommend prime rib if you are a prime rib fan. It comes with two sides which I got to pay extra and ordered the garlic fries. Overall, I highly recommend stopping by here to dine. I have no complaints whatsoever. It was actually the best meal I have had during my visit to this state. When my sister in law recommended this spot, I did not think that I would have enjoyed it as much as I did. Just because there is not much food options in the area and I didn't think that this spot could produce really good food since I am from California and am a foodie. And well Powder House is kinda in the middle of no where. Well, 2 thumbs up from this Yelper. Add this spot to your bookmark and make sure you go! Let me start by saying that the service was OUTSTANDING and I feel badly leaving a negative review, but I think future guests need to know: we left our meal completely confused by the overwhelming positive reviews. Nothing was outstanding; at best, the mozzarella sticks were "fine" and the fries were "good." All of the food could have been improved. The chicken Alfredo was not just bland; it was actually so "off" in flavor and the chicken seemed like it was pre-packaged processed meat. My daughter barely touched it and I agreed with her. The bison burger was rather dry and the only thing saving it was the cheddar and bacon on top. None of the food seemed to be fresh. We've heard ownership recently changed and this might be part of the issue. Hopefully they can figure things out because it has potential and the staff is lovely. read more

We occasionally go there for dinner. I had the 8 oz. prime rib -- perfect size for me with a baked potato and a salad. All of it was excellent. The service was very good and friendly and professional. It's worth the 1/2-hour drive from our house. Expensive, but competitively priced for similar restaurants. We will definitely go there again if we are in that area and looking for a good place to eat. Definitely recommend. read more

Why, oh why is this restaurant in South Dakota, 1500 miles from my home? I guess I'm better off. If it was up the street, I would be broke and my doctor would be yelling at me about all the red meat I was eating. I love game meats and this menu has an entire section devoted to this. First night I had the Elk and Buffalo medallions. Game meat can be dicey to cook because it has no fat at all so if cooked wrong it can be dry. No so here. They were both so tender and juicy. My husband had the ribeye. It was WOW! So tender. We are only here for two nights so we came back and had the quail. Also delicious! And for this quality of food, it was VERY reasonably priced. The country fried steak is one of the best ones my husband's said he's had. Our waitress for dinner could have been better with checking on us. Breakfast came fast but our waitress was good. Awful, awful, awful!!! Our burgers elk and buffalo were so over done they were not edible!!! When we came in we were told they could not seat me without my brother!!! I asked why and the woman said she'd have to walk him out to show him where i was!! Really!!! We are people in our 60s and wouldn't be able to find him? This place is charming and great food! We had dinner here three times this week and today they opened for the season for lunch. We decided to go again! I had a delicious BLT salad. My husband had a "Brotherly Love Burger" with a side of coleslaw. He said it was outstanding. The burger sported Swiss cheese, peppers and mushrooms. My husband had the pork shank which almost looked like it could compete with my 8 ounce prime rib for sheer deliciousness. Charming waitstaff and nice drinks round out the evening. There aren't many highly rated eateries among the cluster that is close to the Mount Rushmore landmark, however this place is just a mile or two outside of that--totally worth it. Powder House (also their lodging) has been around for decades and the patio views are breathtaking. Our server was adorable, energetic and helpful (forgot her name, sorry!). I ordered the Queso burger, subbing a side salad (a little small perhaps) for fries, which was crisp and delicious with (I'm guessing) homemade ranch dressing. The burger's attention to detail included crispy crumbled bacon, crunchy dill pickles, Queso (could have used more imo), jalapenos, and the ever sublime toasted Brioche bun. My powder house steak tasted pretty dry for medium doneness, it's just very underwhelming. My husband had the Buffalo and it came out medium rare, wait staff didn't ask how he wanted it cooked so we assumed it was all 1 type of temp, my husband had to send it back. The night special ribeye came out nice according to my daughter but she said it's "average good" . We got curious of the high rating, we tried it.
