It's an old school German restaurant that's been doing things the right way for a long time. They are cash only- no reservations so be prepared. This place gets busy, but they do have a bar area and patio to hangout on if you have to wait. We chose to eat here on a Tuesday and we were seated immediately. The dinner menu is simple (meat or vegetarian option) and I kind of loved it. However they do offer a wider variety of food for lunch. We shared a bottle of wine and ordered the 9oz steaks. Everything was simple yet delicious. For $19.95 it's a hell of a meal! Do not skip dessert here. The bread pudding is a standout 10/10 would eat again, but they have many options. Just charge an extra 3% and finally arrive in 2025 and accept card. Service was ok, she had a lot going on and the patio was full. I ordered a Schnitzel with sauce on the side, it ended up on the schnitzel making the breading soggy. The cheese spätzle, were really the highlight of the plate, I'm still unsure what sauerkraut was doing on a Schnitzel plate? It's usually served with sausages, but definitely not with schnitzel. The small salad with vegetables was also very minimalistic, not the mixed side salad I came to expect from European restaurants. Overall, it could be better, but it's a busy place and at least something else than burgers and sandwiches. We love Alpine Inn and often make the drive up from Rapid City just to get our filet mignon fix. I'm honestly baffled when people say it's expensive--you can't even buy a decent steak at the grocery store for under $20 these days! In my opinion, it's very reasonably priced, and the prices haven't changed in all the years we've been coming. The dinner menu is simple, with just two options, but I have no complaints--the quality speaks for itself. The lunch menu is much larger, though we usually stick to dinner. The desserts are absolutely delicious, but I almost always have to take mine to go because I'm so full! My son's friend, who's a foreign exchange student from Germany, even commented that the food felt very authentic. The vegetables on one meal were pretty good. The other meal, the baked potato wasn't baker well and the steak wasn't cooked to the right temperature. Ah, Alpine Inn, one of the most recommended restaurants in the Black Hills. Famous for their limited menu for dinner (only two entree choices) and being cash only in an old-timey spot - what could go wrong? On a Mid-October weekday, we decided to drop in for dinner. By 6:30PM, when we arrived, there was a huge number of people waiting outside for seats. We put our names in and an estimate of 30-40 minutes was given. Luckily we were in within about 10 minutes and since we had our orders picked out already, everything went quickly. No, seriously - since they have such a streamlined menu, everything goes quick here. Most of the food served at Alpine Inn is very efficiently batch cooked rather than made to order, so the waiters can bring out your food literally within a couple of minutes. All entrees come with a wedge salad. In this case, the laziest wedge salad I've ever seen. Literally a wedge of iceberg absolutely doused in the most generic tasting ranch imaginable. They say it's homemade, I say it's made from a powdered seasoning mix. They ladle on so much dressing that it feels like you might as well be drinking a cup of ranch. Not to mention that the iceberg lettuce itself is quite haphazardly chopped, resulting in scraggly bits of lettuce sticking out every which way. I completely regret eating this salad - the ranch taste permeated every bite I had for the rest of the meal. This wasn't helped by the fact that they don't give you new utensils when you get the main entree, so be prepared to have the ranch dressing infest your steak as well.(2/5) Bacon Wrapped Filet Mignon, 9oz ($17.95) - The filet itself is cooked medium rare, very tender with decent flavor. Less than $18 for this piece of meat, plus everything else, is an absolute steal. There's a piece of bacon wrapped around the meat, which I found totally unnecessary. Since the fat doesn't get rendered out much, the bacon is flabby and chewy. For some reason they had a random piece of lettuce trimming under the steak, like a sad piece of garnish. The filet comes with a baked potato - very typical, nothing special. In a cup on the side they give you a thick sour cream-like sauce that's quite herbaceous tasting, mixed with chives, that goes perfectly on top of the potato. Finally, they give you a piece of toast, which isn't fresh at all and instead is cold and soggy. (4/5) Kaes Spaetzle Primavera ($15.95) - This dish is pure butter. First a pool of butter on the bottom of the bowl, then chewy spaetzel, a layer of melted cheese, and finally steamed veggies on top including zucchini, squash, bell pepper, and carrot. It's a very simple dish that can be put together in minutes. A lot of chefs say "fat is flavor" but in this case, there's a ridiculous amount of fat drowning the dish out and yet it still tastes very bland. Again, there's a random piece of lettuce, this time underneath the spaetzle bowl, and a sad cold piece of toast on the side. I feel like this dish is a complete afterthought - like they originally only had filet mignon on the dinner menu but people complained about not having a vegetarian option so they begrudgingly added this dish. (2/5) Overall this meal felt like a child's concept of a fancy dinner with the exceptionally dim lighting, the way everything is served, the food selection, and the plate construction. Is Alpine Inn worth going to if you're in the area? Sure, given that it's a pretty good deal especially for the filet mignon and the fact that it's a Black Hills institution. Would I personally ever visit again? No way. Bathrooms: Two absolutely tiny restrooms near the entrance. I have no idea how they manage to fit multiple stalls/urinals in such a small space. read more

We really enjoyed the lunch we had here. We are going back today. I understand only German food is served at lunch and we wanted to try it. Our friend who is German liked it too. She said the potato salad was like her Moms( not like American potato salad ). We got the pork chop. It was tender and juicy. We are going to try the brats today. Someone at the table next to us said the Brats were good. I liked the sauerkraut also not as much the red. We ordered several deserts . We liked the bread pudding and Neapolitan the best. Ambiance: This is a really neat spot in the heart of Hill City. There are quite a few dining rooms and each one is beautiful. It's a cozy space and very inviting. When yo walk into the restaurant, there is a small bar area that serves beer, wine, and soft drinks. There is no liquor which of course is fine but worth mentioning. The entire restaurant is CASH ONLY (there is an ATM in the bar area). Food: The food was just fine. Since it was our first time, we had no idea there are only two things on the menu for dinner. Between a steak dinner and spaetzle primavera, the steak is the way to go. This was definitely not the best steak I've ever had, probably not even in the top 5. But $15.95 for a 6oz cut of meat is a great deal. The wedge was delicious and quite filling. The side cheese spaetzle was nothing special. Their dessert menu has over 20 options and the bread pudding was very good. Service: the lady working the front desk was pretty rude when I asked for a menu. Like I said, it was our first time here and I had no idea only two items were offered. They have the items listed on a chalk board-I asked if anything else was available and she snapped "well this is how we've done it for 40 years." My bad. The server was nice and professional BUT we felt very rushed during our meal. I was literally still eating and she wanted to take my plate. She then brought our dessert before we were done with the main course. I understand it's a busy spot but give people time to eat. High end looking place but overall felt a bit odd...only TWO menu items so you would think it would be outstanding...nope. The waitress was nice but not good. We are at the 1885 restaurant the night before and had better food and better service. Dinner is steak, always has been always will. There is a Primavera dish or a vegetarian dish option too. Almost every one is eating a perfectly cooked tender 9 oz filet wrapped in a soggy bacon wrap, just for flavor. Flavor is good, actually mine was cooked better and tasted better. They have this meal down to an art, you fix your potato garnish and the wedge is basically naked with a slathering of ranch. The desserts are tasty and they do two seasonal options. Well this place was recommended to us by the security team at the South Dakota State Capital. They were totally right! It was fantastic! I'll say upfront you'll need to pay for your meal with cash at the cashier station but no worries they have an ATM on site. The place was decorated for Christmas already and it was beautiful in there! We went later during their lunch hours but were seated without any issues. Note that they close between lunch and dinner so plan accordingly. Service was prompt. Nice selection of beer for the spouse and the ice tea was fresh and delicious. I ordered the Swedish meatball special while my spouse ordered off the menu. Both plates were graced with large, delicious, hot portions. Best meatballs I've had in a long time! Had to stop eating to make sure I had room for the delicious pumpkin strudel. My only regret is that I forgot to go back and tip the waitress! :-( read more

We come here out of tradition, but haven't been here for a few years. We won't be back, as the wait and even the ambience aren't worth the quality of the meal we ate (half of). The lettuce wedge was drenched in ranch, but the real disappointment were the filets - fatty, not cooked as ordered, and overall not tasty. The toast and baked potato were okay. I can't figure out if this is a 3-star or 4-star place, but I'm opting for 4 because it's just so unapologetically exactly what it is: old-fashioned. It's charming somehow. The decor is from some bygone era and just feels old world. Like your grandparents probably enjoyed a meal there when they were dating. Service is brisk but friendly, surely made all the easier by the fact that there are literally only two options for dinner: steak or spätzle. Even the food looks old. They are definitely not into gourmet ingredients or presentation. Having said that, the steak was surprisingly tasty and incredibly reasonably priced. A bargain, actually. The bread pudding dessert was also delicious. I don't know if we would come here again, but I do know that we're glad we tried it out. We ended up lingering and conversing quite a long while over a bottle of wine so that level of comfort probably says something in itself. We both chose the 6 oz filet, and included a wedge salad...a slice of iceberg lettuce...and a baked potato. The wedge salad was pretty good. That's where dinner went south. The filet? was terrible! I really question if it was a filet. I've never seen a filet that looked like this one. We had to send ours back because we ordered it medium and they both were clearly rare. The waitress took them back and and brought them back at a better temp ...but it really didn't matter...terrible cut of meat. We ordered dessert. There are 8 or more choices. Ours was ok. Delicious German cuisine and good wine list. Lovely ambiance. We say inside this overcast cook day and it was cozy, candlelit and intimate.. We stopped for lunch and we enjoy German food so we both ordered the sausage platter which had fresh and smoked bratwurst with purple cabbage, spaetzel, and sauerkraut, two delicately thin slices of rye bread, served with horseradish and mustard. My husband loves German more than I (he has travelled there a lot) and I thought this was the best sausage I have ever had. He agreed. He loved the sauerkraut (I found a unique flavor to it that I didn't love) but the purple cabbage was outstanding and it was the best spaetzel I have ever had. I had Gustav Adolph Schmitt Spatlese Riesling (light with hints of pear and stone fruit, ever so slightly acidic and medium bodied). He had a NA Athletic Golden Ale. We topped off our meal with the TK Chocolate cake with vanilla ice cream. The cake was hot and moist and oozing with chocolatey goodness. Our server was excellent. Try this place!
