We had a ground of 15 so we reserved a table. We came around 4:430pm and they gave us a beeper. When our group was all here at 5pm, we were seated promptly with a table prepared. It was already completely filled in the bar with wait times until 6:30pm at that point. Come early or reserve if you have a big group! There are two dinner options for adults - bacon wrapped steak and a German noodles dish. The bacon wrapped steak was great and also came with a wedge salad. The prices were incredible at about $20 per entree. It does have a strong bacon flavor so you have to be sure to enjoy that flavor. There was a hotdog option for kids and a vegetarian menu. The dessert menu was extension with more than 10 items. I had the napoleon and it was light, airy, and flaky. Everyone was happy with their desserts and the price was around $7 per item. Suckered in by all the touristy advertising. If you want to get in with the first seating be there at least an hour before opening, check in and sit on the porch. Or just come when you want and hope to get in with only an hour wait. Regardless of some of the advertising there is nothing German about the place except the name. I'm from Chicago where we have a long history of real German food. But nobody comes for that anyway because the menu had like 3 things. 2 sizes of filet mignon which they promote being the cheapest which they are or pasta primavera which was a huge serving and looked decent. Should've opted for the larger one but as we age we just aren't eating that much. The meat was dry and overcooked, Easily the worst filet mignon either of us has ever had. The waitress was not rude though not welcoming or friendly but mostly just slow, both mentally and physically. Something about the area in general is they don't offer much if anything in the way of vegetables with meals. A problem for some health issues. While visiting the Custer South Dakota area we decided to try Alpine Inn our family have been going there for years so today we did. They serve German Food for lunch 11:30-2:30. Dinner is steaks I guess. We went for lunch. I got the schnitzel with spatzel and sauerkraut. It was good. Would have liked more kraut instead of the red cabbage but I forgot to ask for that. My husband got the German Plate. It is two brats one fresh and one smoked with spatzel and sauerkraut. He also got the German potato salad. Both dishes were good. Alpine Inn was a very nice spot in Hill City SD. We had about an hour- hour 15 minute wait to get in, but we were glad to wait. Once inside, the service was good and food came out quick. We got the 9 oz Bacon wrapped filet mignon and the German primavera dumplings. Both were great options with good portion sizes and really fair price. The restaurant opens at 5:00 but the lounge opens at 4:00. Nice place to unwind after a day of exploring the area. The star here is the bacon wrapped filet mignon. It was tender and cooked perfectly. We always make sure to eat at the Inn while visiting this beautiful part of the country. We were there the night of the restaurant reopening after their winters break. The staff is always super nice, friendly and efficient. The bacon wrapped filet is always cooked perfectly (medium rare, any other way is blasphemy;)) and you must save room for dessert! We visited for dinner before heading to Mount Rushmore for the evening. The streamlined dinner menu offers a filet or a vegetarian spaetzle dish which are value priced and a really good value for the meals. It's also a great change from the typical burger and sandwich restaurants which are popular in the area. The restaurant itself is in a historical building that is nicely decorated however the dining experience is rushed so it's difficult to enjoy the ambiance. The dessert menu features about 25 homemade options and we shared the bread pudding which was a delicious treat to finish off the meal. The lunch menu looks really good and if we find ourselves back here we will try to be in Hill city at lunchtime to try the lunch menu. The cheese spätzle, were really the highlight of the plate, I'm still unsure what sauerkraut was doing on a Schnitzel plate? It's usually served with sausages, but definitely not with schnitzel. The small salad with vegetables was also very minimalistic, not the mixed side salad I came to expect from European restaurants. I'm honestly baffled when people say it's expensive--you can't even buy a decent steak at the grocery store for under $20 these days! Ah, Alpine Inn, one of the most recommended restaurants in the Black Hills. Famous for their limited menu for dinner (only two entree choices) and being cash only in an old-timey spot - what could go wrong? On a Mid-October weekday, we decided to drop in for dinner. By 6:30PM, when we arrived, there was a huge number of people waiting outside for seats. We put our names in and an estimate of 30-40 minutes was given. Luckily we were in within about 10 minutes and since we had our orders picked out already, everything went quickly. No, seriously - since they have such a streamlined menu, everything goes quick here. Most of the food served at Alpine Inn is very efficiently batch cooked rather than made to order, so the waiters can bring out your food literally within a couple of minutes. All entrees come with a wedge salad. In this case, the laziest wedge salad I've ever seen. Literally a wedge of iceberg absolutely doused in the most generic tasting ranch imaginable. They say it's homemade, I say it's made from a powdered seasoning mix. They ladle on so much dressing that it feels like you might as well be drinking a cup of ranch. Not to mention that the iceberg lettuce itself is quite haphazardly chopped, resulting in scraggly bits of lettuce sticking out every which way. I completely regret eating this salad - the ranch taste permeated every bite I had for the rest of the meal. This wasn't helped by the fact that they don't give you new utensils when you get the main entree, so be prepared to have the ranch dressing infest your steak as well.(2/5) Bacon Wrapped Filet Mignon, 9oz ($17.95) - The filet itself is cooked medium rare, very tender with decent flavor. Less than $18 for this piece of meat, plus everything else, is an absolute steal. There's a piece of bacon wrapped around the meat, which I found totally unnecessary. Since the fat doesn't get rendered out much, the bacon is flabby and chewy. For some reason they had a random piece of lettuce trimming under the steak, like a sad piece of garnish. The filet comes with a baked potato - very typical, nothing special. In a cup on the side they give you a thick sour cream-like sauce that's quite herbaceous tasting, mixed with chives, that goes perfectly on top of the potato. Finally, they give you a piece of toast, which isn't fresh at all and instead is cold and soggy. (4/5) Kaes Spaetzle Primavera ($15.95) - This dish is pure butter. First a pool of butter on the bottom of the bowl, then chewy spaetzel, a layer of melted cheese, and finally steamed veggies on top including zucchini, squash, bell pepper, and carrot. It's a very simple dish that can be put together in minutes. A lot of chefs say "fat is flavor" but in this case, there's a ridiculous amount of fat drowning the dish out and yet it still tastes very bland. Again, there's a random piece of lettuce, this time underneath the spaetzle bowl, and a sad cold piece of toast on the side. I feel like this dish is a complete afterthought - like they originally only had filet mignon on the dinner menu but people complained about not having a vegetarian option so they begrudgingly added this dish. (2/5) Overall this meal felt like a child's concept of a fancy dinner with the exceptionally dim lighting, the way everything is served, the food selection, and the plate construction. Is Alpine Inn worth going to if you're in the area? Sure, given that it's a pretty good deal especially for the filet mignon and the fact that it's a Black Hills institution. Would I personally ever visit again? No way. Bathrooms: Two absolutely tiny restrooms near the entrance. I have no idea how they manage to fit multiple stalls/urinals in such a small space. read more

We really enjoyed the lunch we had here. We are going back today. I understand only German food is served at lunch and we wanted to try it. Our friend who is German liked it too. She said the potato salad was like her Moms( not like American potato salad ). We got the pork chop. It was tender and juicy. We are going to try the brats today. But $15.95 for a 6oz cut of meat is a great deal. The wedge was delicious and quite filling. The side cheese spaetzle was nothing special. Their dessert menu has over 20 options and the bread pudding was very good. Service: the lady working the front desk was pretty rude when I asked for a menu. Like I said, it was our first time here and I had no idea only two items were offered. They have the items listed on a chalk board-I asked if anything else was available and she snapped "well this is how we've done it for 40 years." My bad. The server was nice and professional BUT we felt very rushed during our meal. I was literally still eating and she wanted to take my plate. She then brought our dessert before we were done with the main course. I understand it's a busy spot but give people time to eat.
