The potatoes were good with a nice spice mixture and a generous helping. The slaw was awesome! Lots of yummy sweet dressing that had a great celery seed flavor that complements coleslaw so well. I've had a lot of amazing fried chicken in my life. Dakota Broasted gives it all a run for its money. We were passing through Custer, saw this place on Yelp, and decided to give it a shot. The chicken was so good we went back to the window afterward to let them know. We ordered the multi-piece meal from the walk-up window, where a friendly woman helped us decide what to get. It was ready within a few minutes, and we devoured the entire thing at a picnic bench in the parking lot. The chicken is of course absurdly good - perfectly flavorful, crisp, tender - but every side was fantastic too. Opted for a meal at the cabin last night and chose Dakota Broasted carry out. First question was what is broasted and they defined it as pressure cooked with oil so that it cooks from the inside out vs. outside in. The chicken was tender and tasty. We got a bucket and for sides - slaw and potatoes. We also had to get the gizzards and were not disappointed with any of these choices. The person taking my order was nice, sweet, kind, and patient answering my questions. They work hard to fill the orders coming in right up to closing. We walked up to order, the people working were really sweet and helpful! They have a drive through and a couple picnic tables outside but we drove to Sylvian lake for an afternoon lunch. We were on vacation and had just arrived in South Dakota after 8 hrs of driving. We're staying at one of the hotels up the street. We know the area around Keystone but not Custer, so we didn't know of any good eating spots in the area. We had seen the Dakota Broasted sign as we arrived, so we decided to give it a shot. My watch was still on California time, so we thought we had time before they closed. As we approached the building we were met by an employee who told us they were closed. To our surprise, as we started walking back to our car, she invited us to put our order in even though they had just closed. We couldn't believe it. She genuinely wanted to help her customers! Being that they were closed she could only offer us a limited menu. We were appreciative and gladly made our choices, And we were not disappointed! The chicken, potatoes and rolls were great! The seasoned chicken was fantastic! We had intended to save some for the next day but we ended up finishing everything that night. Great place for chicken and sides! A unique local chicken shack. The chicken dinners come with potato wedges, rolls, and coleslaw or beans. The chicken was juicy and perfectly cooked. Potato wedges were a little too salty, but maybe that's just me. The coleslaw was the best I've ever tried. There was a long line in their version of a drive-thru when we came (Friday afternoon around 5:30), but you can park and order at the walk-up window. Service was friendly and very fast, even though everything is cooked fresh. Note that they are closed on Sundays and Mondays. read more
