This place is wonderful. It's family owned. The food is great. The service is great. And the environment is great. Every year, we make it a priority to come here and eat. We always visit this place while we're in Sturgis. Normally, we would always come for lunch. We keep telling ourselves we need to come here for breakfast sometime. So this year, we decided to come through Custer for breakfast on our way into Sturgis. It's wonderful as always and still as busy as always. That tells you how great this place is. Got breakfast here several times while staying in Custer. They have a link on their website that you can order for takeout which is convenient with covid. The donuts are a must try when eating here- they are made fresh and not like anything you will have anywhere else. The frosting is amazing. Greeted promptly as we walked in. Water was brought before we even settled into the booth and coffee immediately after that! Service was friendly and food came out fast. Maybe because we were here early (6:30) but my coffee was never empty, Loray (sorry if I misspelled that)I was very attentive. Bakery items are made here and the Apple fritter is fabulous! I got avocado toast which was delicious. Fresh avocado and egg cooked to perfection. The fresh fruit was actually quite fresh . Hubby ordered the meat omelette which had a thin layer of egg (which he likes) and lots of filling. Debated on taking a pastry to go but felt it would be better fresh. They are closed on Tuesday and close for the season at the end of September so if you're here other than that be sure to stop by! read more

Overall, a great little cafe. All their buns, breads, and rolls are homemade. The wife and I went for breakfast on July 4th and it was busy. We only had to wait for 5 mins to be seated. On our way out of town we were looking for a breakfast that was going to sustain us an 8-hour roadtrip and we knew that fast food wasn't going to cut it. On a Sunday morning not many places were open but it was pretty obvious that the majority of the cars were parked outside of Baker's Cafe. The place was PACKED. I have never seen a hostess slash server slash busboy work so hard in her darn life, this woman greeted every guest and let you know it was going to be a wait but that she hadn't forgotten about you and your turn was coming. I will wait for HOURS if need be if someone gives me that kind of service, I was really impressed. The baked goods by the cash register looked amazing. Cinnamon buns twice the size as that chain place in the mall. Quick tip - you may want to pre-order any to-go items or they could be sold out by the time you're done with breakfast, we were left with donuts and turnovers that, while exceptional, couldn't replace the cinnamon buns. Breakfast was hot, flavorful, and the green chile was spicy just like I like it. They will not win any awards for decor or spelling on their menu but those tidbits are easily forgiven with the good food, fresh baked goodies and terrific service. PS - if the other patrons tipped like we tipped that day (and they should have) that one lone server taking care of a packed house went home with full pockets. And well deserved. read more

My husband I discovered this place last year while vacationing and we looked forward to visiting again during this year's vacation. This place is a cafe and bakery but we were really just interested in the bakery portion of it. Last year when the bill came to eight bucks and some change for two pastries my husband almost choked. When we got down the road with our two pieces of gold, and took our first bites, we discovered why they were priced so high. It's also what got us to return this year. The price went up though and those same two items were at least a buck more. I'm usually pretty frugal so when I'm willing to spend that much for two treats it says a lot about how good it is. One of the treats was layered with chocolate and peanut butter and had caramel and peanuts on top. One of the layers had something krispy in it (rice krispies?) and was amazing. The other treat was also layered and was kind of like a granola bar on steroids. If we ever get out that way again we will probably return to this particular bakery and maybe we'll even eat at the cafe too. read more

My husband and I ate there 2. First time was lunch. I asked for the southwest chicken wrap with no fresh tomatoes. Unfortunately it has them and the wrap was disgusting. My husband had the burger and that was awful as well. The meat was tasteless. The next morning we both had the breakfast burrito and they were both dry and over cooked. The Owner was the greeter and when we discovered that the person in our group miscounted our group, she was very rude with her tone and scolded us for miscounting telling us she needed to re-arrange tables to seat 7 and we'd have to wait. We did wait and tried to calm our group down from her being so rude to us over an honest mistake. There was no kindness in this interaction at all. When she re-called us she said 'Party of SEVEN' with an absolutely unnecessary and unprofessional sarcastic tone and attitude. When I asked to talk to the manager or owner I was shocked to discover the greeter was the owner. I wanted to try to have a calm conversation business owner to business owner about the tone she talked to us with. She was not interested in listening, being calm, and told us no one is making us stay here and eat. She kept interrupting me as I tried to speak to her and then walked off during this conversation. She then radioed a waitress to rush us out if we weren't going to stay so she could quickly seat another party. Instead of deescalating everyone being upset, the disrespectful tone and words were continued so we finally left. On our way out, another of our party tried to speak kindly to her about how disrespectful she was talking to people. She blamed her bad attitude toward us on others who treat her badly all day in the food industry. We tried to explain that that does not mean you take it out on others. Every point we tried to make about how service industry workers should treat people, she twisted back and blamed others for the reason she was treating people this way and that unless we've worked in the industry we wouldn't understand. We left telling her almost all of our party has worked in the service industry and we DO know how unprofessional she is being. read more

Really solid spot to grab a bite to eat in Custer. Pros -Great breakfast food (both in selection and quality) but they also offer lunch and pastry options. -Seriously, their home made pastries are very good. Apple Fritters, Cinnamon Roles, Donuts, 7 layer bar - you name it, they have it. -Lots of seating indoors (I think they said they sit 100) -Very friendly and quick service - think we could have been in and out in 30 minutes for breakfast service if we wanted to -Ordered the breakfast sandwich on the home made role - the scrambled eggs were cooked perfectly and the roll itself was very tasty. Wish they had other options for the eggs (I am sure they would accommodate you - I just didn't ask since the menu listed them as scrambies). -Reasonable prices across the board for items they served Cons -No outdoor seating that I was aware -Not dog friendly (wouldn't expect it to be, but worth noting) -Wish the home fries were a bit more crispy - IE maybe cooked 2/3 minutes longer to get that nice brown crust. This could be a personal preference... Overall, Baker's was a great spot for breakfast and one I would absolutely revisit. read more

First thing is I worked in the hospitality industry for long enough that I'm pretty forgiving about small stuff. However, I visited this cafe on two separate occasions and hostess (owner maybe?) is the rudest "hostess" I've ever had the displeasure of encountering. She's not remotely friendly. She's basically there to encourage people to leave from what I can gather. The food is decent, not amazing, but decent. It's certainly not good enough to overcome the attitude of the "hostess." I gave it two trips because I thought maybe she was just having a bad day the first time. Nope. She was just as hideous the second time. Really a shame because our waitress was as cute and friendly as she could be but it's really not worth putting up with attitude when there are other better, friendlier options available. If she hates customers, she really should go find something else to do. read more

I'll preface this review by saying that we ate here twice during our short visit to Custer, SD. The menu is basic but pretty good and they don't skimp on portions. The pastries and bread are baked fresh in-house and nothing short of amazing. Our server, Lauren, was quick to take our order on both visits and provided excellent service with just enough attitude to be warm but spunky. We liked her very much. That being said, we would happily give Baker's Bakery & Cafe a 5-star review if not for the owner/manager(?) who seated us both days. I worked in many restaurants through college and I know what great or even good customer service looks like and she's not it. She's basically everything you don't want to experience upon walking through the door. On our first visit, we had a brief wait at the front of the restaurant and were well within earshot of this person's comments and demeanor. I overheard her complaining that a 2 top suddenly turned into a 10 top. Letting them know at 9:45 that breakfast would be over at 10:30 and they may have to order lunch, rudely. (I mean, how hard is it for a place that only serves breakfast and lunch to extend a little courtesy???) One would think that more business would be a good thing for a business owner, but not this one. As most reasonable people will do, I simply chalked her attitude up to someone just having a bad day. However, upon our second visit, we found her right back where we left her, with the same demeanor and resting scowl face that she had on our prior visit... as if she's doing us all a favor by allowing us to eat here. Sorry, are we putting you out? Keeping you from an important meeting? Overall, I'm giving this place 4 stars, but deducting a point for the awful woman who doesn't value her customers as her livelihood. I'm hoping she'll read this review and change her attitude. We stopped in for breakfast and although there was a line it did not take long to get seated and the meal was quite good. The bread is made locally on site and the breakfast sandwich was quite good. For me the breakfast burrito with its green chili sauce was excellent and I would highly recommend it. It was so good the next day as we were driving through I waited till we got to customer so I could have that burrito again..Service is good and the waitresses were quite friendly and willing to help. read more

My college friends and I recently took a trip to South Dakotah; and, found ourselves desperate for a good meal, after exploring the caverns connected to Jewel Cave National Monument. We were driving through Custer, Sd on our way back to Hill City; and, parked along Mr. Rusjmore Street. Looking at Yelp, we were perplexed as which to choose; but, since Bakers Bakery was right across the street, we decided proximity would rule! We were quickly seated in the dining room furthest in the back, which was fine; and, were seated at a comfortable table. Lauren Y was our server; and, she proved herself quite remarkable. We chatted about local places; her move to SD and our visit; and, took her advice on a few items. Two of us had the Buffalo Burger (100% buffalo meat); and, we asked to "Make it a MIke's" with grilled onions, special sauce, and cheese! Our other diner had a West Burger, which featured avocado among other toppings. Two iced teas, a lemonade, and two orders of fries rounded out our orders. Lauren Y brought out the food, cooked to order and piping hot; and, refilled our drinks as necessary. After receiving cold coffee and waiting about another 15 minutes another service came over and asked if I was ready to order. This was an awesome place for breakfast this morning. Came in about 9am on a Thursday morning and was immediately seated with no waiting. The front of the store is a functioning bakery that you can smell from a block away. Everything looked so good but we were there for a hot breakfast. Looks are deceiving from the front. They have a ton more tables in the back. We quickly had some really good brewed coffee but n front of us and placed our order. I had the Breakfast Burrito smothered in homemade green chili and my wife had the American Breakfast with eggs, bacon, hash browns, and toast. We also wanted to try the biscuits and sausage gravy so we shared a small side of that. The burrito was outstanding and I could barely finish it. My wife said her eggs were cooked perfectly and her entire meal was good. The biscuit and gravy was average but okay. Service was excellent and a neat environment. We stopped in after spending a few hours at Jewel Cave down the road and came with a healthy appetite. Karma blessed us as we arrived just a few minutes before they were closing up, yet they graciously welcomed us to stay. I probably won't turn down a salmon blt very often and seeing as they served one, that's the route I went. Great choice..the cut of salmon was tasty and I inhaled the sandwich in record time. Baker's Bakery is a quaint spot within Custer, perfectly encapsulating the feel of diner from an earlier era. The food arrived possibly *too quickly*, and I suspect lead to some quality control issues. For instance: the famous breakfast burrito's meat was primarily on the top half, which lead to a rather disappointing bottom half. The Avocado toast was about the size of an appetizer, and the side of fruit was unfortunately passed it's prime. The dining room was not busy, so there was plenty of time to get it right which would've certainly lead to better quality food. Though tables are a bit close together, there's still room for somewhat private conversation. The service was kind, attentive, and knowledgeable. .. just slow down on the food. 2/5 Side note: The pastries looked delicious, though I didn't have time to partake in them. read more

The people are friendly and attentive and the food is pretty good. Apparently in the summer, the breakfast burrito and omelettes are premade and just reheated? We could not substitute or remove ingredients (like no hash browns in the burrito). However, the food was still pretty good anyway. Everything was pretty great but we paid cash and ended up $5 short when the waiter brought the change, but we didn't notice until after it had been sitting on the table for a minute, so didn't feel like if we said anything that it would be worth it because we have no proof really? We wanted something to go and I came across this gem. They got my order ready in about 10 minutes or less. The grilled chicken sandwich was smile and exactly what I wanted; the homemade bun it came on was AMAZING! Husband had their carnitas wrap, which was great on a hot day. They had some kids menu options, which was perfect for our family. But the best part was their bakery. The owner is very disrespectful not only to her customers but her employees. I went there on a Friday, and they where at about 50% capacity. I am not from around here, so when I was picking out my doughnuts I picked a couple cinnamon twists. before the guy could even inform me that those are not included, she came charging in and with a rude tone of voice said "Those are not part of the deal". Then she turned to her worker and said "you should know better than that." Then on top of it, when I asked for dry toast with no butter, they still buttered my toast. The young people behind the pastry counter need to focus in on the customer they are taking care of and listen to the order. The prices reflect the lack of interest in local support as does the fact that they can't stay open as soon as they think the Tourists are gone. Very clearly ordered maple, Bavarian Cream long johns and got something totally different and then because no one looked in the bag that she THREW them in until on the way out of town it was too late to fix since they were sold out! She should have given us what we ordered in the first place and cared about the way she packaged them too.
