We've craved this place many nights and could fill up a stamp card if they had one. Our friend introduced us to Bakenstein after he found it on DoorDash. When we ordered for pickup the first time, we didn't realize it was a ghost kitchen, and cautiously approached the front door. The owner seems very chill and has helped us when we had an issue with DoorDash delivery. They only have 3 flavors: white chocolate pecan, chocolate chip pecan, and snickerdoodle. Initially, I enjoyed the white chocolate pecan, but after my sweet cravings subsided, I found myself enjoying the chocolate chip pecan more. My fiancé always gets the snickerdoodle. As a self proclaimed cookie connoisseur I have to say Bakenstein makes the best cookies I've ever had. My bf found them via google search and placed an order online. Cookies are made to order and you do have to wait for a bit. We picked them up from the home kitchen and they just smelled divine. We ordered the monster mash online in advance, pack of 4 monster cookies (a combination of chocolate chip pecan and snickerdoodle). Our quoted wait time was about 30-35 minutes. When we arrived, we weren't sure we were at the right location. The place looks like a residential home, without any identifiable decor or signage (or it was hidden behind a large bush). You pick up at the front porch, there's pacman game on the left, a QR code to order on the right, and a small buzzer/bell to ring for service or to pickup. The guy came out after I rang the bell, he was friendly and efficient in bringing out our order which was ready upon arrival, served hot and nicely packaged. Omg, these cookies were really good, we were pleasantly surprised. The snickerdoodle was quite delicious, freshly baked, nice texture, plenty of cinnamon. The chocolate chip pecan blew me away, chunky with lots of melted chocolate in every bite, and it wasn't too sweet, which made it even better. I may have a new favorite cookie, for chocolate chip flavor at least... they'll have to make other flavors like peanut butter or oatmeal to truly win me over. read more

My husband and I had a late night craving for cookies! We wanted something local but decadent. We saw the stellar reviews for Bakenstein and gave it a shot. I placed my order online through a very easy process for a chocolate pecan cookie. We were given a pick up time and headed out. When we arrived we noticed it was actually a house- not a bakery but it was marked clearly. We rang the bell on the table, and we were given our cookie right away! We took our hot cookie home and it smelled divine. It was pretty big in size (see my photo with a quarter for reference). There was a ton of chocolate and pecans nestled in cookie batter. Oh and it's just excellent with milk- especially when it's warm. You can tell these are homemade. In fact, we ordered a half dozen a week later and they were phenomenal too! I highly recommend Bakenstein for all your cookie cravings! read more

These are best cookies I've ever had, I've ordered from them twice already and will keep ordering even though it's a 20 minute drive. My favorite is the strawberries and cream and my boyfriend loves the cookies and cream one. All the flavors are delicious though. The quality is great and service is amazing. So, honestly I was looking forward to the big cookies. They ended up not being the standout of the order though. First, they had a Pacman game outside to play while you wait for your order to be freshly baked and cooled. Second, they have a limited time (hopefully permanent addition), the Strawberry chocolate chip cookies! The big cookies have a pretty thick putter crust that while easy to get through makes them pretty thick and more bite than I was looking for, when compared to the thinner strawberry cookies we got. Wow, that light crisp shell with the light strawberry flavor was fantastic! The porch area was a safe location to be on a well lit and waiting area. read more

The cookies were very good and warm! From what I read they use good ingredients. You can see them on their website. The only issue I had which wasn't a big one is that you have to order them at least a half hour before you pick them up. But they do bring them to your car, which is nice. They also are open till 11 PM. read more

Located right by SCU, parking is limited and spots are few. Ordering is done online. You can also call them which is what I did since I had a price issue with ordering online. Your order does take a while though since they do make it from scratch. They do have a pacman arcade machine while you wait though. Snickerdoodle (5/5): The edges were crispy while still holding a chewy and gooey interior. It was also generously coated with a layer of cinnamon sugar. Do note they are on the sweeter side. Overall, Bakenstein is a great place to fix your sweet tooth. SCU students and nearby residents don't overlook this place! Their cookies are phenomenal aside from the unconventional hours and location. read more

I came here on a Saturday night on the hunt for the best cookies closest to me. I pulled up to what looks like a house and there's a Pac-Man and a doorbell thing where you can order. I would suggest ordering ahead so you don't have to wait like I did but honestly it was fun to play Pac-Man and wait for the the yummiest cookies ever. Literally so warm, perfectly toasted, and freshly made, def recommend the snickerdoodle and the chocolate chip pecan. Delicious cookies that are easy to order! I placed my order online and was able to quickly pick it up within 20 mins. The location is a bit hard to find but Waze will easily take you there. On the way home from Santa Cruz my partner and I wanted something sweet, so I took a gamble with a small place and chose Bakenstein. A lot of people really enjoyed this small (literally - I think it's in their house!) baker on Yelp so it was promising. There was a little quirk with the website (on mobile, I was unable to pick out which of the three cookie varieties I wanted) but this was promptly addressed by a text afterwards asking me how many of each flavor I wanted in my batch order. Service was very prompt, polite, and considerate via text and when we received the cookies (they even let us know how long it would take to cool down so we could time our arrival). The cookies were great! The brown butter is delicious and I'm not usually a snickerdoodle fan, but I really enjoyed their snickerdoodle. The added nuts to the chocolate chip cookie was also fantastic (but I'd be hesitant to recommend a person with a nut allergy to this place since most of the flavors have nuts). I'm happy with the cookies we received, and I'd like to see more cookies on their menu in the future. read more

These cookies are really solid. I can't even choose a favorite! I got them as a gift for my friends, and they all enjoyed them too. I ordered over phone/text and it was super easy. They have iMessage hahaha. I ordered a dozen with their three flavors (snickerdoodle, white chocolate pecan, chocolate chip pecan), four of each. Total was $19.99, $10 of which was due at time of booking to confirm the order. They were sweet enough to even give me a monster cookie when I picked up! So I found Bakenstein thanks to Yelp! I was craving some chocolate chip cookies, they had really good reviews, and they were nearby. Yelp showed their hours as 8pm-11pm so it was right after dinner too, figured we'd swing on by after dinner and satisfy our sweet tooth. We pulled up in front of their place (they are baked in a home kitchen, gotta support small businesses!) and figured maybe they had some cookies pre-made for sale? NOPE! Everything is baked to order but wasn't a problem as we were asked what we'd like and how many minutes it would be for them to freshly bake them. About 20 minutes later and we had our warm monster chocolate chip pecan cookies. Couldn't wait to get home and try them, they were delicious. Not too thin, not too thick and a perfect blend of crispy and soft. I love nuts with my chocolate chips and wasn't disappointed! I will for sure be back and this time will order a few of each and place my order ahead of time. Not that they had a problem with it, they were very welcoming and accommodating, but more so they wouldn't have to fire up an oven just for our order. Thank you Bakenstein, we're fans! P.S: Whoever wrote that these are just Toll House cookies, that is quite an imagination and a discredit to this business. These are no mall cookies. read more

3.5/5 The cookies were delivered and still fresh which was great. The snickerdoodle was probably the favorite of my friend and I. The two other white and regular chocolate chip cookies were good too but probably too sweet (I get the nestle comment in regards to the chocolate chips used). If the sugar was cut down and Guittards semisweet chocolate chips were used I think they'd be more enjoyable overall. Still, happy with them. read more

Yummy cookies and amazing customer service! I texted to place an order for the next morning and they responded quickly and were very accommodating - I was able to pick up the cookies at 8am (an hour before opening). On top of that, I requested chocolate chip cookies with no pecans and they were happy to accommodate. They also included two extra cookies, so sweet of them :) The cookies were the perfect texture and sweetness - slightly crispy on the outside and soft & chewy on the inside. These are the perfect cookies for me- soft and chewy on the inside and the pecans add the perfect textural difference to keep things interesting. This was such an awesome discovery! Less than a mile from my house, this home-kitchen bakery has some of the best late night cookies you're going to find. Definitely order ahead on their site since they'll be freshly baked and take about a half hour. I strolled around in the meantime and it was very much worth the wait. Bakenstein is AMAZING and you absolutely have to try it! I am not exaggerating when I say that the cookies are some of the best cookies I've ever had. Literally, the first time I tried their monster cookies, I turned to my partner and said, "these are the best cookies I've had in my life." They have just 3 flavors that they do VERY well (chocolate chip, white chocolate chip, and snickerdoodle). I recommend the larger monster cookies over the minion ones (even though the minion cookies are also still very good) as although the flavors are the same, the larger quantity of dough in the monster cookie creates a different and extremely satisfying texture, and it's with the monster cookie that you can really appreciate just how much filling of chocolate chips and nuts (pecans?) the cookie is PACKED with. There is so much chocolate, and all of it is melted and oozing. They absolutely do not skimp out on the chocolate chips or nuts. Although there are a lot of other cookie shops/franchises out there, Bakenstein is the only one I've had recently that I felt was worth the cost. Something to be noted is that both the white and regular chocolate chip cookies are not standard chocolate chip cookies; they've got a prominent brown sugar flavor and taste like pecan pie married chocolate chip/white chocolate chip cookie. I don't typically like white chocolate too much, as I prefer dark chocolate that isn't too sweet. Despite that, I was surprised to find white chocolate chip to be their best flavor. The mellow white chocolate just pairs so well with the pecan pie-like flavor of the cookie. If you have to try just one, I highly recommend the white chocolate chip monster cookie. The customer service is also excellent. I recently ordered a couple boxes of their smaller minion cookies for a Friendsgiving. The event was planned to start before his hours of operation started so I called to ask if it might be possible to pick up before open time. The owner was really nice, and was willing to accommodate pick-up outside normal business hours, saying that he wanted people to have the cookies while they were fresh. These are some of the best cookies I've ever had - I'm now ruined because I know I'll keep craving these cookies. Highly highly recommend! read more

The chocolate chip and pecan cookies were very tasty, but a hair too sweet for me. However, I didn't notice when I paired my cookies with a cold glass of milk. I really appreciated that I could order one or a dozen. I also loved that I could choose regular 3" cookies or the giant ones. That simple fact puts this place above the other chocolate chip cookies place in San Jose which only sells the giant cookies and only in packs of four or more. Oh, I forgot to mention that my cookies were baked fresh when I ordered. Can't get better than that! One more thing, this place is located in a house with no signage that I noticed. I'd your looking for some fresh baked yummy cookies, give this place a try. read more

I'd love the decor. You can also order off of a menu, but we were too enamored with the actual pastries to even glance at it. I took photos but made sure to not take photos of the staff. I let the staff know that I wouldn't include their faces without their permission. they were very friendly and very appreciative. At the same time, I give a lot of credit to the staff who are always friendly and helpful with indecisive patrons who are always asking questions and unsure of what to get. Somehow, they keep the lines moving at a good clip. The inside has lots of seating but it fills up fast. And it gets pretty loud. There isn't really anyone cleaning up the tables as it is self busing so it can get a bit crazy and messy by midday. Somehow, I keep coming back to drop $60-80 at a time everytime I visit.

The bake shop is small, clean, with simple black wall decor. When you walk in there is an oven area to your left and the cashier is in-front of a small counter straight ahead. All orders are to go as there are no tables or chairs inside. We ordered their popular $10.00 Tuesday special which includes 4 chocolate chip cookies. The cookies were huge and plump in the center. They were soft, chewy, and delicious. The center was gooey with plenty of big chucks of chocolate. Overall we enjoyed our experience at Choc Cookies. The staff were nice and helpful. The cozy environment was family friendly. Thier $10.00 Tuesday special is a great value. I definitely want to come back to try the other cookie flavors.

The cake is on the slightly denser side, so was super filling. While on the pricier side, the flavors are super unique and the craft that goes into crepe cakes is commendable. It was covered with lots of cream and the cake layer was soft and moist, but it was still slightly too sweet for me and I felt that it lacked the tofu kind of soy flavor. Then, I spotted on their menu that they have a black sesame matcha box cake, and black sesame is always my favorite, so I asked for it. They had the last one left! The staff said she had never tried it so she couldn't tell me if it is less sweet than the soy milk cake. Since it was the last one available and I already sampled the soy cake, I decided to give it a try. I am happy that I did. The cake was filled with matcha mousse and tasted light and aromatic with the jasmine kind of matcha flavor. It is definitely less sweet. Unfortunately, it doesn't have as much black sesame as I'd like. But overall, the cake flavor is the kind that I like, subtle, moist, and not too sweet. $38 for a box cake of 4x4 is a bit pricey, but I'm glad that I gave it a try. The cakes were freshly made and tasted best the same day of purchase. They also recommend refrigerating the cake and consuming it within a day or two.

However, we had a specific taste profile in mind and asked if they could custom make the samples for us - they said yes without hesitation and didn't charge us extra! The samples were delicious and the pickup process was easy. We went with a ribbon cake (chocolate and vanilla) with fresh strawberries, whipped cream filling, and vanilla buttercream frosting. I also had a very specific vision for my wedding cake - I wanted a detailed three-tier cake with buttercream vintage flowers. We also ordered a plain sheet cake with the same flavors to ensure that we had enough slices for our guests. I worked with Fariba during the ordering process and they were great. It's a small bakery with lots of trays of individually packaged cakes and pastries. The smell was very pleasant and comforting. Using a flat basket (or tray) I grabbed a few selections. I picked 2 "Heart Pies" that resembled my favorite French Butterfly Cookies. Also 2 pound cakes. The total rang up to just over $21. There's some small tables for enjoying your purchases there, but I took my items to go. The icy cold fruit smoothie was very good and very cold! Not too sweet, it had a natural strawberry taste. The Heart Pies were good and fresh. But the Pound Cakes were probably "day old." I noticed there's no dates or "best by" tags on the packages. It's a nice place to visit, and I will return again. Free parking in plaza lot.

It had a sour, fermented smell and was completely inedible. Selling spoiled dairy products is a serious food safety issue and completely unacceptable. Given my positive experiences in the past, it's alarming to see quality control decline so dramatically. Management needs to address this before someone gets sick.
