We bought a couple day-old loaves of bread and a couple of fresh cinnamon buns. The bread was OK...dry...needed butter when consumed. The cinnamon buns were off-the-chain good...I mean run through a wall, silly-good. Staff was pleasant during our visit. read more

First time visit. Got some croissants that were SO good! Staff was friendly and despite being super busy, the girl who helped me took the time to answer my questions. I'll be coming back to try out some pastries and their espresso machine, heard it's good coffee. read more

Went here just yesterday to inquire about a birthday cake for my sisters upcoming 50th. Their selection from the cake books is somewhat lacking and uninspiring. When I saw the price of a quarter sheet cake starting at 37 dollars just for the cake and additional for decorating I about fell over. I actually know how to decorate cakes as my mom used to be a cake decorator many years ago at Kwast Bakeries in Lansing so I said "ya know what I will just fit in the time to make and decorate one myself and it won't cost me a fortune either. I have most of the ingredients in my cupboards already". The cake that we were thinking of was 37 for just the cake and an additional 30+ dollars for the decorating. Really almost 70 dollars for a quarter sheet cake. I am surprised with these prices that they are still in business. Don't waste your time... read more

Since there are so many reviews on here about poor customer service, I wanted to provide a review on the customer service specifically. I ordered a torte last night for delivery. The woman on the phone provided FANTASTIC customer service! She was very friendly, helpful, informative, and patient. She was very thorough and went over every detail. I just can't say enough about how pleasantly surprised and satisfied I was. I will update this review about the quality of the product after the torte is delivered. UPDATE: The delivery arrived on time and special instructions were followed very well. Recipient loved the torte! Will definitely bring my business here again! read more

Do not try their smoothies. I was there 6 times within a two week period and only twice were the smoothies worthy enough to be called smoothies. The other 4 times I could have gone to Speedway and bought a slushie for 99 cents. However, their flaws made me try Tropical Smoothie and they have hit it on the mark EVERYTIME I've gone! Very much worth the money! read more

I had a horrible experience at Bake N' Cakes. My order was supposed to be ready for pickup at 10am and I showed up at 10:40 to pick it up. They could not find my order and had to go make it, I waited an extra 30 minutes. After I received the cupcakes I realized they made them incorrectly so we then had to wait another 30 minutes. In total I spent an hour waiting for my cupcakes while arriving after the designated pickup time. After argument all they could offer was either a free cupcake or a 10% discount on the order and did not offer any more after they made them incorrectly. While we were waiting another woman came in and was picking up her order she placed, they could not find it either and made it incorrectly. I was very displeased with the manager Mya's willingness to correct their wrongdoing and her poor attitude. She stated she remembered taking the order and that we must have placed the order wrong. We even clarified on the phone the difference between white and vanilla and yet we got chocolate? Also if she remembered taking the order why weren't they ready on time? Horrible customer service and mediocre cupcakes. read more

Cost, Service and product were very bad. I don't usually write posts, but this one had to be known. I brought all my information for a full size cake for an Installation we were hosting on Saturday. I placed the order 5 days ahead of the event. The cost was $170.00 for a full size, decorated cake. I called that Wed to make sure everything was alright. At first they told me my information was missing, but after 15 minutes they found everything to include my pictures. I called again the day I was suppose to pick my cake up and was told they had no pictures again. Once again, they found it after 15min of searching. I was told my cake would be ready that night. When I went over to pick the cake up at 6:30pm. It looked bad, rushed and misspelled. I asked the store to fix the decoration and spell "Grand Ledge" properly and I would pick it up in the morning. I was told "Either you take the cake as is or you leave it". I would be embarrassed too serve such a mess, so for $170.00, I left it. Luckily Kroger on MLK took care of me the next morning. They made me 5 lovely cakes and was $60.00 cheaper. I will never go back to Bake n Cakes and I will tell my friends the same. read more

I've never ordered a cake from here so this review is just for single items. There is a pretty good selection. The cupcakes are pretty good, but nothing to write home about. Sometimes they're fresh and moist and sometimes they taste a bit stale. Chocolate covered strawberries are always good though. read more

It may be more expensive, but that's ok considering quality. You get what you pay for, and it's obviously fresh and tastes better than homemade. Staff is always friendly, which seems hard to come by these days. read more

I ordered some dinner rolls for Easter dinner and picked them up on the day before. They were in a plastic bag - didn't look right but I took them home. Later on my son looked at them and said they weren't baked - they were a little larger than golf balls and were very greasy to the touch. It appeared as if we were to let them rise and bake them ourselves. However there were no instructions. I ended up throwing them out. I went back today and explained the situation. The manager showed me a bag of dinner rolls and they looked nothing like what I was given. These were not greasy and were normal size. I asked for a refund but the manager declined because I threw the defective ones away. I won't go there again. read more

I recently tried to place an order for my sister's baby shower with this bakery, but was refused service because I live out of state. The communication was incredibly poor--the various employees I spoke to didn't know how or "weren't allowed" to place orders; I didn't get an e-mail response for nearly a week, but when I did I was quoted a price only to be refused service later. The manager, Halle, was intransigent and unwilling to problem-solve so as to secure my business despite my willingness to work via e-mail and sign a contract. I cannot say enough how incredibly frustrated I am with their inept and inconsiderate staff and the poor business model. read more

Got a birthday cake for my youngest first birthday. They were very helpful over the phone explaining what they had and what they could do. I ended up getting her smash cake for free because of a deal they had. It was pink with yellow writing and pink and yellow flowers on it. I called several days ahead of time to order a dozen Cherry Cheesecake cupcakes. The woman that I spoke to on the phone was very friendly and helpful. F@ck this place. No seriously, they can go to hell. My fiancee and I drove all the way up from Chicago to do a "cake tasting" and to meet with a design person for our upcoming wedding. We arrived on time and they gave us four cakes to try(which we had to pay for btw). After figuring out which cake we liked best, we asked about pricing and if we could talk to their design person. It was at this point that we were informed by the rude staff that the cake person "is much to busy to meet with you today". WTF? Seriously, if you were to busy, why the hell did you schedule and appointment and why the hell did we drive all the way up to EL for this garbage? All in all, the cake is bland and the frosting is meh, the staff is rude both on the phone and in person. There are far better choices around that one could select for a wedding. read more

We bought delicious sounding and looking cupcakes today for our daughters birthday dessert. We purchased 6. The cake was so dry and the cake directly under the frosting was hard/stale. I ordered a 2 tier cake for my parent's 65th (Sapphire) anniversary. I brought in a color swatch to match, and they were able to turn basic white flowers into a pretty Sapphire-like color. Kudos to the baker and decorator. The cake was absolutely beautiful. When we brought it into the restaurant, all of the customers inside turned their heads to look at it. Our guests not only commented on how beautiful the cake was, but also on how moist and tasty the yellow and carrot cake layers were. It was a smashing success! The only downside which could have been a smashing disaster was that to save a Sunday delivery fee that would have amounted to 40% of the cost of the cake, I picked it up myself. Staff wisely took it out to the car for me, and cautioned me not to make any sudden stops or sharp turns. Common sense I thought. Just drive like a little old lady. What they didn't tell me however, was that the board the cake came on was very slippery. So you guessed it, putting it into the refrigerator caused one slip and a small finger hole. Setting it on the buffet table caused a second slip and some more finger licking. Fortunately, I had turned the cake around in the frig so that the ornate decorations were towards the back and the plain frosting in the front. So nobody ended up seeing the finger holes on the back side of the cake. When I returned the cake posts for my 8.00 credit, I asked staff how does one safely transport a cake on such a slippery board? I was advised to put it on a large cutting board. Duh....great idea! Wish she would have told me that when I picked the cake up. It doesn't come in a box. It comes on a cake board. A very slippery cake board at that. I asked when I ordered it if I should bring a box and she said no. So buyer beware. If your cake is more than 2 tiers...don't be stupid or cheap. Have it delivered. If it's smaller, and you plan on transporting it yourself, bring a large cutting board so you can pick it up and put it down with lots of space between the frosting and you. And drive carefully, especially though constructions zones. read more

Hugely disappointing on multiple visits. Their cakes and cupcakes are extremely dry, and that is the biggest complaint I have, especially since cakes are their namesake. They are very slow, although pleasant, behind the counter, and the atmosphere is pretty dreary. On one visit, we had a Swiss roll and my husband and I thought the creme was sour tasting. I've had much better boxed mixed cakes, and even better cakes from a grocery store, let alone all the other local bakery specialty stores who offer more variety and freshness than Bake N Cakes. It's strange to me how they've stayed in business. read more

Fans of local businesses, take note. This is one of the good ones. Today I bought one of their cherry coffee cakes for an office party. It was moist, dense and flavorful. I also bought some cute butterfly cookies because I couldn't resist. Those cookies were ok. I've had others from this bakery that were outstanding. Another fun option are the filled muffins and cupcakes. This bakery is a long-standing supporter of the MSU Museum Chocolate party and the first time I had the filled cupcakes was at that event. The most bland dry cupcake ever. Totally dissatisfied. Also the monkey bread.....woof. Never going back.

I live in California and my sister lives in North Carolina. We threw my mother a surprise 60th birthday party in Feb, and we needed a cake. As my sister and I were born and raised in the Lansing area, she recommended this bakery as she has ate their cakes before and they were very good. Well I called and made an order. I explained that it was a very special day as my mom's surprise 60th birthday. I am not the cake expert by any means, so when on the phone I was not 100% sure what I wanted. I went through with the lady on the phone what my mom's interests are as well as some of her favorite colors. I explained that I was not 100% sure what I wanted the cake to look like, but I did trust I was in good hands seems how they are a bakery. Well when my sister stopped to pick up the cake, the first problem was they could not find our cake. She called me frantically asking again who's name it was under. Finally they found our cake, but it wasn't in the computer system. The cake was a joke!!!! I would have not served it to a child. The decorations made the cake look like a child's cake. And to top it off, the colors were horrible together. There was huge RED writing saying Happy 60th Birthday, but it did not fit the cake at all. To top it all off they charged us over $50, for a cake that was worth $20!! I personally could have decorated the cake better than this place. Sadly enough we had to take the cake, as my mom's party was starting in just hours. If I owned a bakery, I would have never allowed a cake to walk out my doors looking so horrible!!!!! You should be ashamed you put your name on that cake!!!!!! read more

My wife went in recently to speak with a cake decorator. As my wife was sitting down, the decorator showed up and just stood hovering over her. I've ordered from Bake and Cakes a few times as well as stopped in for treats occassionally. Most recently I hosted a baby shower and I ordered a large cake and several dozen cookies. My experience today makes me see why they have low ratings. I wish I had paid attention to this before ordering my daughter's birthday cake. They made a mistake on a frosting decoration--not a big deal, it happens. But instead of owning the mistake of making amends they insisted on charging me seven dollars for a director ration it would take no more than a minute to create. After reading the reviews here, I had to look twice to see if this was the same bakery I have come to love. Seriously, these reviews don't make any sense to me at all. I have bought cakes and cookies here for over 10 years. Every cake we have for any treasured event has come from Bake n' Cakes. Their key lime is to die for - the death by cheesecake is right up there too! Their products are consistently excellent. Granted, not the cheapest in town but worth the dollar and the time traveled. The only issue I have ever had was with their lemon meringue torte. The lemon filling sometimes "melts" into the cake. When the torte was brought back and shown to their staff, they not only replaced it, but replaced it with the next larger size. Awesome customer service. I have tried to replicate their incredible buttercream frosting, but so far no such luck! I guess I'll just have to continue being a faithful customer :) read more

I really like cake, so when I won the gift card for Bake n Cakes I was pretty pumped. Bake n Cakes has all manner of confections including cookies, cupcakes, and brownies. I had already tried Bake n Cakes' cupcakes and judged them inferior to Sugar Shack, so I ordered two cakes for Valentines Day to try some of their other wares. They had a wide variety of cake and frosting flavors, which I enjoyed. I took the opportunity to order pineapple cake with pineapple frosting. Where else are you gonna get pineapple cake? The staff was friendly and efficient. When I went to pick up my cakes the store was very busy, but they seemed to get people in and out at a good pace. One of my two cakes had the wrong frosting, but the staff was cool about it and corrected the issue. The correction only took about ten minutes extra. Overall it was good cake and a good bakery. read more

I have no problem with the product or cost, however the service sucks. I called last night to see if they had any large plain cheese cakes. I'm not sure I'd even give this bakery a 1 star ratings! I was in Cake N'Bakes on Friday 4/13/18 wanting to order a cake & cookies for my daughters RN graduation celebration, In my opinion l was treated like I was wasting their time!!! asking simple questions as to what they had to offer for a specialty cake, flavors & decorating ideas. The "Head" decorator as she referred to herself was the individual who finally waited on me. There were only a couple of customers in the store at that time & I waited patiently for a approximately 5 minuets when I was approached by a gentleman who then went to get me some assistants. To my surprise I was directed to their computer only to look a a few cakes & was handed a brochure with pricing & that was it! Nothing more, nothing less. I called on 4/14/18 to speak to the owner or manager & was told the owner was not available, so the store manager took my call & the only thing she said was " sorry" I asked her when he would be available & was told next Wednesday! Lol! What a joke! I left feeling like,If your not spending the big bucks$$$ I guess your not important enough! I won't be back folks! read more

Husband visited this bakery this am for the first. We were eager to try their coffee, and a sweet treat! Unfortunately the customer service was poor. Barista lacked basic knowledge of the products sold. Barista did not know what type of coffee they sold....couldn't tell me the type of coffee or flavor or bean. Was very rude while we're making a our coffee, as if she thought we couldn't afford it. The cinnamon rolls were also a disappointment! First and last time! I love Bake N Cakes and have been going there since I moved to Lansing back in 2006. Their gourmet cupcakes are wonderful and the cheesecake is to die for. Several years ago (before I knew about Yelp) we custom ordered a cake for a birthday party - a Halloween themed cake in March. It was a strawberry cake with cream cheese frosting and it was delicious. I have always joked with the staff there and have never had a problem with their service. I plan to continue to frequent Bake N Cakes for years to come! read more

I grew up down the road from this place, and it's been in lansing for a long time. i've given them chance after chance, and time again i am disappointed by their products and pricing. their frosting is always odd, you can literally taste the crunch of the sugar in between your teeth - but somehow the frosting tastes bland! we've done maybe 3 or 4 birthday cakes with them. i keep giving them more chances because so many locals love the place, and it could have been just one bad person i had dealt with. but unfortunately, the majority of staff members i have dealt with were rude (i remember one woman arguing with me about how i wanted fondant on my cake!) - and the cakes themselves were never impressive. they even expect you to go to michaels down the road and buy the decorations for your cakes.. i stopped in tonight after quite some time, for some cookies, hoping they hired some friendlier staff. paid around $11 for a few cookies and was very disappointed in the quality; they were so stale and crunchy! the staff didn't seem happy to see me either. i REALLY wanted to like this place; i love supporting local businesses. won't be back, though. read more
