First time, I had, get this: BRISKET CARAMELO Grilled crisp caramelos stuffed with shredded brisket, tomatoes, chorizo, cheddar and Jack cheese. Topped with two strips corn husk smoked bacon, fire roasted diced green chile and two poached eggs. The place is very small and extremely loud -- between the music and the overall noise level, it was hard to hear the person sitting across from me, the food took forever to be served as well. Unfortunately, the food was disappointing. The eggs were very pale, which usually indicates lower-quality eggs, and both the sausage and hash browns were overly salty. On the positive side, our waitress was great -- friendly and attentive, which we really appreciated. Baja Café never disappoints - it's one of our favorite Tucson places for breakfast because the food is delicious and flavorful, the portions are huge, coffee is smooth, and the staff is lovely. They have an extensive menu that it's so hard to choose what to get because you'll want to try everything. Our go-tos are their specialty pancakes and the benedicts which can easily be shared or you can leave with leftovers. The strawberry pancake is my favorite of the pancakes - slices of strawberries in the pancake gives it a freshness and the caramelized crunch adds a sugary texture to the pancake; no syrup necessary! If you want some protein/something savory, recommend making it a common - you get 2 eggs, choice of bacon/sausage/chorizo, and crispy but not greasy hashbrowns. Second favorite of the sweet treats is the cinnamon roll brioche fresh toast - thick fluffy brioche with swirls of cinnamon. In terms of the benedicts, my husband always tries their specials and always enjoys them. Of the standard menu ones, the brisket caramelo is great - especially if you're looking for a big savory breakfast. My wife and I first tried to eat here early on our trip to Tucson, and the line was far out the door, and we were in a rush that day, so decided to eat elsewhere. We came back on a weekday day at 11:00 and there was no wait, but after eating here realize why this place is so busy. This is by far one of the best breakfast places we have ever been to. The menu has so many delicious sounding dishes, it was difficult to decide, but we ended up getting the Two Pan Sam Lemon Blueberry pancakes and the Wyatt Earp Benedict to share, and were blown away by both dishes. I don't normally like pancakes much, but could not stop eating this dish. It was sweet, but tangy and there was this carmelizaiton on top that provided a little sweet crunch which was so good. It was great though to have the Wyatt Earp for a savory dish and the green chiles in it and the tender pulled pork with cheese tamale pie and tomatillo sauce was a perfect complimentary plate to have, and I loved going back and forth between the two dishes. To top it off, I decided to try one of their spicy Bloody Mary's. I think I've only tried a Bloody Mary a couple of times in the past so am no expert at how this compares, but just seeing what it looked like, I had to try one, and was not disappointed. It had a spicy rim and spicy a collection of items to go with it such as spicy bacon, cheese, a Jalapeño which were delicious and a great way to top off this over-the-top breakfast. Alright, heads up. Was not expecting this place to impress as much as it did. From waking in, we were greeted with warm smiles and a great welcome in this beautifully quaint Cafe. Took us 15 min to get sat, as expected. Times quoted were accurate. Colby ( I think that was his name) came and sat us, he was also our server. Colby was extremely knowledgeable, he explained with precision. Listed the special of the day and answered any questions we had. I had the Southwest Benedict. I had asked for the line to make the dish with a little heat and was executed flawlessly. The food took about 15 min to come out. For brisket, bacon, perfectly poached over easy eggs, bell peppers and identically sized chopped onions; the timing was on par and worth the wait. The plate was cool and the food was warm. (meaning it was NOT sitting waiting to be ran. Huge points for amazing time management by the team.) I gave my complements to Colby to give the cooks on the line. Turns out the Owner was on the line making the amazing food we just ate! I am a restaurant manager in Cali and I can say with a humble competitive spirit that after eating the food here at Baja, I am inspired to step up my game. Found this on Yelp after a stressful trip down to the Western Passport Center and it was just what I needed to calm my nerves :) AMAZING breakfast - the short rib with eggs was incredible and my 10yo stole most of it. Her Liege waffle was excellent as well and true to form. (It's a different kind of waffle, yeasty and chewy and definitely worth a try!) Portions are large and filling. Service was efficient and friendly. We were lucky to get an open tiny table for two but larger parties were waiting outside for a while. Today I have the Eggs and French Toast Combo for $18.25 with a cup of coffee for $2.75. I got a side of bacon with my eggs which were done over medium. They were perfectly runny and bacon crispy, its too bad that they do not come with toast or hashbrowns to soak up the egg yolk. The French toast was thick and sweet, a little too sweet. The FT came out sitting in a liquid, covered in berries, whip cream, and a thick layer of frosting. I had to remove a lot of the frosting in order to not get sick from the sugar. I think the coffee is a little overpriced but that is just me being nitpicky. The place looks small but it has a patio out back and a room to the side. It can seat a sizable group is needed. Baja Café is one of the best breakfast restaurants I have ever visited. There is a reason why it is included on Yelp's Top 100 Restaurant of 2024 list. The menu is extensive featuring eggs, pancakes, omelets, breakfast tacos, French toast, liege waffles, benedicts and many other mouthwatering breakfast options. I went with the Classic Rancheros with Chorizo. OMG these were some of the best huevos rancheros I have ever had. Perfectly crisp tortillas were topped with flavorful meaty chorizo, rich yolky fried eggs, melty cheese, flavorful green chile tomatilla and red chile salsa, creamy black bean sauce, and creamy avocado. The side of hashbrowns were soft, savory and perfectly crisp on the outside. Outside of the perfect meal, the service was some of the best I have ever experienced. Always courteous and making sure we always had coffee. My wife ordered Liege Waffles which looked delicious to us, were slightly overcooked according to our server. He immediately put in another order and let us have the "slightly overcooked" one in the meantime. It tasted good but when we got the fixed version, oh yeah, it was spectacular. Chose to try the thunder and lightning. It's a Benedict I'd call it southwestern style. It came with a habanero chicken sausage which was amazing, 2 eggs bene style, peppers, bacon, all on a plain pancake accompanied by hash browns. The eggs were perfectly cooked. Runny. Just as they should be. The portion was huge. I'd say enough to share for sure. For the pancakes I chose a two pan Sam. This is a blueberry pancake with lemon curd and whipped cream. Wow. Worth the wait! This Tuscon institution serves up traditional and southwest inspired eggs benedicts as well as traditional breakfast and lunch staples. On our most recent visit, I had the prickly pear margarita and breakfast tacos with chorizo. I opted for corn tortillas which were made from scratch in house. Two tacos with pureed black beans and cheesy potatoes were more than I could finish. Our server was very sweet and attentive. We were seated immediately on the patio and very comfortable with our own propane heater. Facebook memories let me know I had dined at Baja Cafe on the same day five years earlier. Still holds up! I've been coming here for years, but it fell out of my regular rotation for some reason. Now I've been back 2 days in a row, and I'm wondering to myself why it took so long to revisit?! Today, I had the Wyatt Earp Benedict ($18.50): Grilled green chile and cheese tamale pie placed over a green chile tomatillo sauce topped with seared pulled pork, two strips of corn husk smoked bacon, fire roasted green chilies, onion, tomatoes, melted ched- dar and Jack cheese. Topped with two poached eggs, avocado hollandaise, pico de gallo and cotija. Just amazing. The portion is so big, once again, I could not finish, but my taste buds were singing with each bite. My companions got the Southwest Smoked Brisket Tots Benedict ($19.50) and the Smoked Brisket Enchiladas ($19.00) and a side of tater tots ($4.50.) All of us were thrilled with our selections. We also split the Snickerdoodle pancakes. No joke, this was some of the best any of us had ever had. One hiccup was we sort of fell through the cracks when first seated. However, Cameron and Gordy more than made up for it, and we hope they are available when we return for our next visits.
