I asked the receptionist at my hotel to recommend a pub for supper ... she sent me to Bailey's Restaurant & Bar which is within walking distance to my hotel. When you go through the door, you can go upstairs to the "dining room" or stay on the main level for the "lounge" ... I chose the lounge and sat on a cozy comfy loveseat and read my book. I found Bailey's a conflict ... it definitely has a pub feel to it (but not all that exciting draft selection) and pub grub but it also has a fine dining menu too. There are gambling machines in this area too. My server was Dorota. While she was attentive, she wasn't overly warm. My meal came with Southwestern Chicken Soup, which was good and hearty. I was hungry so ordered prime rib. I ordered it as well-done as possible but it was fairly rare. It came with lemon roasted potatoes which were good but not very lemony. The Yorkshire pudding was good. This restaurant was just okay, not great. I'll be checking out other places during my stay here rather than going back. read more

I wanted to love this place but the execution is lacking. Sat in the lounge which was cozy in a good way. But the service was mediocre at best and the food has some issues. Strong wine and drinks list. But server had no knowledge of menu, kept trying to clear plates people were still eating from, and was basically clueless. Food was eh. Pretty good appetizers. Salad was meh. Prime rib got good reviews. But the fish which was described as fried to a tender perfection instead was cooked to shoe leather dryness and was actually burnt on the bottom. But after waiting over 1/2 and hour for the food to out it didn't seem worth it to send it back. Anyway they have their work cut out for them. read more

From the outside, it looks like a regular bar. However, you enter into a restaurant, you have a choice of the upstairs restaurant or the more casual setting on the main floor. Main floor is a comfortable bar but the servers wear white gloves. Decor is somewhat dated but there were plenty of people. The place was close to my hotel as I was working late with my colleague. I wanted to try their lamb while my colleague decided a steak. We both enjoyed the dinner but the clientele is older. For the upstairs, I went with my boss and co-workers for a fancier dinner. The place was empty as if we book the who restaurant to ourselves. I decided to order steak and was pleasantly surprised. Although this was a business trip, the mean was reasonable and the appetizers were good. There are probably other restaurants nearby before I return. read more

This is my second visit to Baileys in about 20 years. The location of the restaurant of course is impeccable and the stately old building with its rich paneled walls and beams is an elegant setting for a meal or a celebration. The service was very good with no hickups and the staff all very professional in their manner. I selected the 6 oz ribeye with prawns served with lemon potatoes and sauteed vegetables. One problem I had with the meal is that the steak was only offered in rare medium or well. This was because we were in a group and their intention I suppose was to streamline the kitchen operation. I don't think this type of restriction is suitable considering they charged $35. The meal did come with a very average but acceptable salad and coffee and hot buns and butter. I ordered my steak rare but I really wanted medium rare. It came rare but was full of sinewy bits that made it difficult to cut and to chew. The flavor was excellent as were the potatoes and the vegetables. Overall a very pleasant experience but somewhat overpriced. read more

I was just at Bailey's tonight for the first time for my Uncle's retirement dinner. I was very impressed with everything. The waiters were professional, attentive, and funny! They kept us laughing all night. Thanks Patrick, Steven and Ovi (I'm sorry if I spelled your name wrong!) you were all wonderful! The food was excellent as well. I had the chicken breast rolled in a puff pastry and stuffed with capers, olives, herbs and feta cheese. Delicious lemon potatoes and seasonal vegetables. "Meh. I've experienced better" is the perfect statement for this place. I got a chance to return here for a work lunch after trying this place many years ago. I wasn't impressed back then and not much has changed with this recent visit. It's a very traditional looking restaurant, almost in a gaudy way. I like traditional decor but this place is too dark to dine in unless you're in the dining room on the second floor with the windows. Lunch items range from $10-$15 on average so it's about the same as many places in that area. The menu is a mix of really passe items that would be considered to be happening items at the "Paddlewheel" along with some regular run of the mill stuff you see on many lunch menus. There's chicken finger and fries; denver sandwich, steak sandwich, burger, beef teriyaki stir fry, clubhouse etc. Personally, I think if you have a big appetite, I'd order an appetizer to go with your lunch meal. I ordered the chicken souvlaki for $11.50 - one chicken skewer with a choice of fries, rice or our house-roasted potatoes and veggies. Now I don't normally eat a large lunch portion cause I like to be alert in the afternoon. But this plate didn't do it for me, thankfully my coworker shared some of her garlic toast from her order with me! It was a small skewer of chicken, I wish they'd bump up this meal to $15 or $16 and just add another skewer. But granted, the chicken was very tender but quite heavily seasoned. The tzatziki sauce had no real flavour and tasted like mayo instead of cucumber and yogurt. The chicken was served on a very small bed of rice that didn't have much flavour to it. I ordered the roasted potatoes - two halved potatoes that had a nice lemony taste to it. And the veggies were a mixed green bean and carrot variety - seems like it was microwaved too long and came from the Green Giant bag. My friends seemed to enjoy their ribeye steak sandwich though - too bad I chose the souvlaki over the steak sandwich! Food service was a tad slow. Our server was okay, I mean he didn't seem like he enjoyed being there. He wasn't rude but he wasn't nice either. And he had a volume issue - he tended to shout really loud even though we were a quiet group and the restaurant felt like a library. The service isn't as polished as you would expect. And the music is atrocious...it's like really bad elevator or department store music from the 80's. I would not go back to this place because for roughly the same price or a few dollars more, I can have a much better meal from a variety of restaurants within a 3 block radius of Portage and Main! read more

Wow! The food was Absolutely amazing. I'm currently sitting finishing my meal and I had to write a review. Everything's home made and made fresh to order. I had the homemade beef & lentil soup .. I'm a huge soup person and that was literally BOMB ! Followed by the Chicken Souvlaki with lemon roasted potatoes and steamed fresh veggiesWhich were cooked perfectly I must say, the perfect al dente bite. . The service was good ,she didn't top up our waters and didn't really pay a whole lot of attention to us , but that's ok Because the food was so on point lol . It's jst a tad more expensive than most, but absolutely worth it. Chicken was cooked perfectly. The entire menu looked amazing, too bad I'm only passing through Winnipeg or else I'd be here all the time!! . I jst learned that the cooks name is Jerry, thank you Jerry I am leaving so satisfied, your cooking was so on point . The atmosphere is nice too, the building is 115 years old!!! Just happened to find this place while looking for another. I'm so happy that we were lucky and ended up here. We were greeted by a wonderful man that has worked there for 21 years who offered us dining downstairs (lounge/bar) or upstairs to the restaurant. We opted for upstairs. The place is beautiful and elegant, but not in an intimidating way. Perhaps that was due to the exceptional waiter that provided us outstanding service from start to finish. The food was AWESOME. The potato soup and house salad (with cucumber dressing) was the perfect start. My husband's steak was cooked and seasoned to perfection and I had the cajun seafood curry pasta that was out of this world delicious. It had plenty of large prawns, scallops and smoked salmon. WOW!!! The price was unbelievably affordable. This was a Great dinner experience. I'll definitely go again if I'm in Winnipeg. read more

I went with a group and was shocked to discover that for groups they simply refuse to cook steak medium rare. Rare, medium well, or well. That is all folks. So I moved down one notch down, to rare, but found my ribeye anything but tasty and more gristle than the norm. Fat is of course what gives the flavour but it didn't shine through at all. More people eat steak medium rare than any other single style- why on earth would it be the one they eliminate? Disappointing enough that I would choose any hamburger joint over a return here ... And if steak is what's called for this would never make the list long list, let alone the short list. read more

Went with some coworkers, a friend and I ordered the beer cheese soup, and and a beef brisket sandwich: soup was ok but nothing to brag about. They brought us what tasted like corned beef instead of brisket. The decor was pompous and wants to be high class, but was a bit worn and shabby. The room felt crowded at best. Some of our coworkers had to leave early and left us a bill, and the task getting their change. The waitress took it all, and tried to cover somebody who was short with another guys cash, instead of just taking ours. She became very haughty when we asked for change, and was angry at the fact that she couldn't keep the change from the people who had left. I can not even give this place 1 star....after our experience there today for a Mothers Day brunch. They were 45 minutes late in seating us, and several other groups of customers. One customer waiting for a table was told by the manager, Patrick, that there was several people who had been waiting a lot longer for a table than her and she would just have to wait. Finally being seated; after waiting for someone to take our drink order ( or at least water) which never happened, we decided to start our meal as we were all very hungry by this point. The buffet consisted of 2 medium size tables and a fellow preparing crepes on a small, very slow moving table. The first table was 95% empty, with several people standing around waiting for food to be brought to the table. The choices were very limited, if there had been food on the serving trays. A few items were brought out after approx. 10 minutes, the fellow behind the table was embarrassed about the empty table and said he did not know why he was even there as he was a server and knew nothing of the buffet itself. Giving up on that table we moved on to the next which had some lovely looking desserts if we were at that point of our meal but very little else. They did not have any of the staples of a buffet, no pancakes, French toast or waffles, no scrambled eggs, omelets, hash browns or potato's, no bacon, chicken, roast or ham, no seafood etc etc. There were 2 or 3 types of melons but that was it. I think you get the idea!! After waiting inline for crepes for another 10 minutes we gave up and returned to our table with a very empty plate. Some of the chairs from our table had been taken away leaving no where for everyone to sit. Only a couple glasses of waters, no coffee etc., a couple of us had punch in a small glass but they ran out of glasses for that. At this point I asked to speak to the manager, he came over to our table with an exasperated look on his face. I politely explained how disappointed we were in the wait for a table, the food not being prepared and the lack of any selection. I have never been treated so rudely as I was by the manager, Patrick! He basically, in a loud and patronizing voice, told us that maybe we should go to the Gates where we would pay more for our brunch, my 6 yr old granddaughter had very little to choose from and by this time was extremely hungry, Patrick said that he and his staff were hungry too, after a few more rude comments to us, we got up to leave and he told us to go ahead and leave. We just had my sisters Bachelorette there last night and everything was so completely amazing! From the time I booked I had amazing customer service. Better than anywhere else. The person booking me in suggested the perfect area in the restaurant for us because we weren't sure if we were going to be 15 or even 30 people. He set the Upper lounge aside for us and even allowed time for me to come in to decorate. When I did come in to decorate, I had the BEST server come and help me set everything up and she moved tables for me. Her service alone was amazing and perfect for our rowdy group! She was HILARIOUS! She definitely kept us entertained and the food was absolutely AMAZING! I had the beef rib and it was so tender. it was falling off the bone! I honestly can't say enough good things because it was the best restaurant experience I've ever had. In the lounge, you can have a blast and if you want a romantic sit down dinner you can eat upstairs and it's super classy. I think they also have private rooms you can book. Our servers name was Jess and if you are a rowdy group for a stagette and looking for entertainment, definitely ask for her. We were all blown away with how amazing everyone was to us. I know that 5 starts is really outstanding, but this is the place you need to go for chicken fingers! omg. these are the best in the world! They are the crunchy ones that are all sizes and shapes. Does that make sense? lol. and with the honeydill sauce...lordy lordy its heaven on earth! I used to go here once a week when i worked in the building next door. Never have i ever found anywhere else that has the same tasting chicken fingers as here! Though the food is good, the service is lacking. My party of nine received the coldest, rudest, and most disrespectful treatment by the lounge staff during our visit. To begin, we ate dinner in the main room which was very good, great service, and no complains. However after dinner we went down the the lounge for drinks and we were met with a very unpleasant experience. First, it was not a terribly busy night, many tables were open, however while trying to arrange a table we were scolded by staff members for being "in the way". However no one had helped up arrange a table large enough for us, even though it wasn't busy. Then, two of our party members went to the bar to order drinks and the bartender once again curtly told them (after they waited for over 10 minutes for service) that they were an inconvience for ordering at the bar instead of a table. To be frank, we were a big party and spent a lot of money, left ample tips, and I would expect that a place with such warm dining staff would have semi-decent lounge staff. However I have to say the lounge staff's obvious glares, curt remarks, and eye rolling was uncalled for. If you want a nice dining experience, I'd recommend it, but the disrespectful and obvious judgement from the lounge staff ruined the whole experience. read more
