    Goldberg'S Famous Deli

Millburn has no shortage of delis, but Goldberg's Famous Deli is definitely at the top of the list…read more Goldberg's offers deli traditional favorites like fresh-baked bagels, lox, and sandwiches piled high with deli meats, as well as healthier options like salads when you want something lighter in an unapologetically casual ambiance. Goldberg's has been a local staple in Millburn since Tina and Marty Goldberg first opened the doors back in July 1977. The current owners took over in December 2022 and have done a fantastic job keeping the soulful and "old-school" Jewish-style deli spirit alive while making many subtle but meaningful improvements that today's diners expect and appreciate. However, it still has that authentic, "old-school deli" ambiance where you order at the counter then grab a table to wait for your meal and could end up with mismatched silverware. It's charmingly low-key and with a focus entirely on the food. The deli sandwiches are massive and the quality of the ingredients is consistently high. Unfortunately, that also means that the prices are somewhat higher than you might expect. A single deli sandwich served with a small bag of potato chips is in the $20-$22 range, which feels like a bit of a splurge for a casual lunch. That said.. You definitely won't leave hungry and the portion sizes encourage sharing or taking half of your dish home for a second meal. My dining companion and I split the West Orange sandwich, made with corned beef, turkey, russian dression, and cole slaw, on rye bread, which was excellent. We'll definitely be back. PRO TIP #1: Bring your wallet. I do feel obligated to point out that Goldberg's should be rated as a $$ / moderate price range (indicating $11 to $30 per person) rather than a $ / inexpensive price range (indicating under $10 per person). PRO TIP #2: While they don't have a private lot, there is plenty of on-street parking and municipal lots nearby. Use the mPay2Park app for the pay-by-plate meters ($0.50 per hour). Meters operate Monday through Saturday from 8am to 7pm; all street meters are free after 7 pm and all day Sunday. If the street is full, the Essex Street parking deck (24 Lackawanna Place) is a reliable backup.

Even so, being in the area, seeking a high protein meal, I stop in to the Millburn Deli. The establishment seems set for efficiency from the door, even with a quick seemingly (random assortment) ready-to-go refrigerator, for a quick passerby perhaps, like I become when the order I seek to buy is already in the fridge area (at the register). The establishment offers a variety of seating options. This is my first time eating a cold Sloppy Joe sandwich though not my first time eating a cold Roast Beef sandwich. The cole slaw is somewhat tasty, though the mayonnaise-y-ness is not preferable, to me, especially considering sweeter bits are present without the mayonnaise-y-ness. The cheese (Provolone-ish) adds a consistent pleasant flavor in the current mix of cold sloppiness. I prefer Roast Beef with lettuce, tomatoes, purplish-skin onions, Swiss Cheese, horse radish, pepper, oil, vinegar, and on firm wheat bread/a good firm exterior though softer chewy interior wheat-like roll. The establishment accepts different forms of payment.
