I had been to Toast in Montclair several times but finally tried their Cranford location - consistent experience! Cranford location is airier and brighter - doesn't feel as cramped! Our waitress was great with timely service and great recommendations off the menu. I went with the California Scramble - good but wish there were more eggs than the huge portion of potatoes (although they were delicious!) Our table also split the pancake flight - we subbed out the Lemon Poppyseed for the seasonal pumpkin pancake and holy cow were the good! We called that we had a party of 8 coming about 5 mins before we got there, and they indicated the wait would be 5-10 mins but could not guarantee. When we got there, they quoted us 30 mins. The menu is excellent - my personal favorite is the gluten-free waffle and the corned beef hash, although I have yet to experience a bad meal. My only criticism is that each time I have eaten here, I always feel kind of rushed out at the end. The check usually comes right as I'm finishing eating, and I've never had a server offer to bring more coffee at the end of the meal so I can relax for a minute and digest my food. We had a great experience here at Toast today. What a wonderful new addition to Cranford. I was able to put our name on the waitlist here on Yelp before we took the 5 min drive and we were 5th on the list, not too bad. When we arrived I told the hostess and she informed me that there were a few people ahead of us which I knew. We were able to sit off to the side in an empty dining area to peruse the menu. I couldn't decide if I wanted breakfast or lunch. Such a dilemma with great menu choices. We were sat in less than 10 minutes and greeted right away by our server taking our drink orders. We opted for just water with lemon and took a few more minutes to check out the menu. I decided on the Thai chicken wrap and requested breakfast potatoes in place of French fries. The wrap was sooo good. The vegetables in it were crisp and there was a perfect amount of suave with the chicken. Even the wrap itself had a nice crisp to it from their grill. Definitely glad with that choice. My date had the sausage and peppers omelette which he likes as well. He told me "good choice" on the place for breakfast today. Very disappointed with our first visit to Toast. My wife and I visited on a very busy Wednesday morning (Juneteenth) and had to wait 10 minutes for a table. That is no problem. We have waited longer. We wife ordered the broccoli, cheese, and bacon scramble, substituted fruit for the potatoes, and a piece of sourdough toast. I ordered the challah French toast with strawberries and blueberries, and a side of turkey sausage. Of course, a cup of joe. Toast warns substitutions will cost you and are very clear about their pricing. It took a long time to get our food. We noticed several tables were waiting and realized we must have been in a Que. We waited approximately 30 minutes. My wife said her eggs came out just barely above room temperature. Did she eat it? Yes. Toast was soggy with much to much butter. My meal consisted of two thin slices of bread. I've had challah bread French toast many times before and this was not even close to what I can make at home, which I have done dozens of times. This did not appear to be challah bread. If it was, shame on Toast. two thin slices? The turkey sausage was three links that were shriveled up which means it had been cooked a while ago. The amount of blueberries and strawberries on top was nice. I also ordered the real maple syrup for an upcharge. As coffee snobs, I would say the coffee was very good. Our waitress was excellent and friendly. There is a public parking lot close to the restaurant and ample street parking. Other people who visited before us warned about the wait for food, including our own daughter. If the staff is going to make tips, they need to turn the tables over much faster, which means there is a deeper issue somewhere. I want to go back but there is competition in the area. However, while we waited for food, we were entertained by the small children misbehaving and licking knives with their tongues. Scary indeed but worse yet, the great parents did not say a word. read more

3.5 stars but rounding up since they're new in town. Cranford was truly in need of a proper brunch spot and I hope Toast flourishes here. Menu has something for everyone which is great. The execution can be better - for example, pancakes come with breakfast syrup rather than maple. The bananas foster sauce was grainy because the sugar wasn't properly dissolved. Food came out lukewarm rather than hot (even after a long-ish wait) which leads me to believe our food was sitting out for a while before it was brought to us. Otherwise my omelette ($15) and coffee were solid. If I can make a recommendation to management - it's going to be a challenge in the winter if people have to come in person to get on the waitlist and have no place indoors to wait - please open up the waitlist online. Your staff repeatedly had to ask people to clear the area by the door (sometimes not so nicely) because there was nowhere to wait and it was cold and windy outside. Not ideal.
