The bagels have a very thin crust, with no more crisp than a dinner roll. Inside, the dough is light with a slight chew and some subtlety of flavor that develops during its rise. Unfortunately, it has very little structure and, as a result, it nearly fell apart while I ate a sandwich on it. 4.5 stars, very enjoyable. I got a bacon, egg, and cheese on an everything bagel, SPK. The first bite was great: everything held together and there was good flavor and texture. Bagel had a good chew, but also a good give. Eggs are scrambled instead of having a gooey yolk, which I don't mind. Everything bagel had good distribution of seasonings. The reason why it is not a perfect 5 stars is because the bacon wasn't all that great and didn't have enough crisp for my liking. You can definitely tell this is a well run bagel shop though. I never met I Bagel I didn't like, but there's something about Gabe's Bagels that I really Really Like. Maybe it's the fact that they're freshly baked and super soft where they should be but still crisp around the edges. Great NJ bagel spot near Drew University where we come when I'm visiting my daughter. Great service, fast and even if a line it moves quickly. I picked up two bagels and cream cheese for myself and a coworker, and discovered only one of them had cream cheese when I got to work. Grabbed a pre-5:30 a.m. spicy Taylor ham, egg, and cheese on an everything bagel from Gabe's Bagels and they nailed it. Called in the order and it was ready and waiting when I walked in five minutes later. The bagel was soft and warm with a nice shell, the cheese was perfectly melted over the Taylor ham and egg. My husband went in to pick it up - no other patrons in store. He brought the order home, it was a completely wrong order. I called and said we got the wrong order and the man on the phone said "it's very busy in here, we are out of that bagel". i said it is not busy, no one was there. why did you not say there was an item missing at pickup?" he said "like i said, it's been busy." i asked for a refund and he gave it to me, but i found it very disgusting they tried to get away with keeping my money for no product...are you kidding me????? strike one. placed an order months later hoping it was just a fluke. order a breakfast sandwich IN STORE, and waited. Good bagels, terrible attention to detail on delivery. They often forget items, but since they don't have in house delivery you need to take it up with GrubHub, UberEats, etc and it's more hassle than it's worth. Damn, this is a good turkey club bagel! Bagel purists would note that Gabe's version is slightly bread-y but this is more than offset by correct application of components (garlic, onion, poppy, salt, etc for an everything bagel) and the top-rate chewy-ness of said bagel. Also the staff is nice and it's cheap plus we're in NJ not Manhattan so I'm unaware of anything that even begins to approach the value-proposition offered by Gabe's. read more

Delish new bagel spot in hickory square. I thought the bagels tasted soft and fresh and had a great flavor. They were thick without being chewy or dense. They had a large indoor space with a pretty sizable kitchen and counter area, though i don't remember seeing any no indoor seating (but there were two tables outside in the sidewalk!). Masks not currently required indoors, and none of the employees were wearing masks either. They had a hot/cold coffee station, which I was a little disappointed in because some of the milks/creamers were crusty or chunky and the ice had melted into one large block so I ended up drinking room temp iced coffee. I would probably add Gabe's into my bagel store mix because the bagels were great, but I'd love to see some improvement with staff's attention to the details! read more

You can't go wrong with their Egg bagel or their Everything bagel. Gabe's also has a magical, unicorn-esqe bagel called the "Super Egg" - their perfect Egg bagel coated in everything seasoning. Like a left-hand turn on a highway in NJ: you just don't see it everywhere. Gabe's has an impressive menu outside of their bagel selection. A universe of schmears and salads are available to accompany any bagel or sandwich, as well as the classic array of breakfast sandwiches (and lunch options too). I hate writing something like this... I do not appreciate when someone lies to me. What is more annoying; the lie doesn't make sense! I realize this is not a major issue but it's the small things that matter to me. I do not appreciate an inexperienced cook lying & telling me I can't have the sandwich the way I want it. I asked them to make an egg sandwich with bacon crispy. I explained I did not want bacon well done & burnt... Instead of burning it on the grill; I asked them to deep fry it so it's crispy: not soggy & chewy. This cook told me she could not cook the bacon in the deep frier b/c it was pork. Why would pork cause problem for a deep fryer!!! Deep fryers are meant to cook chicken, meat, pork... This place has history of lying & maybe the employees have watched the owner lie so they lie. Prior to opening the Shunpike location; the owner actually worked at the bagel store on Main St in Chatham. While the Main St owner (Joe) was away; she was telling Main St customers about the Shunpike locations. She mis-lead customers telling them the new Shunpike locations was another store of the Main St owners. Actually the Main st location doesn't own Shunpike location. It's sad the while the owner of Shunpike was employed by Joe @ Main St location; she was plotting her move. This is terrible business etiquette. I am sure most people do not know what happened.
