    Almond croissant

I didn't know this was a pre order hyped up type of place. I showed up to the hotel, there was a coffee shop and they had some left over croissants. The girl at the coffee place suggested to go online and pre order. I guess the stuff sells out fast weeks in advance. This isn't an actual bakery and you won't be able to just come here and buy some pastries like you would at a traditional bakery. It's more of a pop up. Not really for me. The croissant I took home was good though.

Bad Butter is a fabulous addition to Bucktown! Given the long lines I've seen - and the volume of pastries people are buying - I decided to arrive extra early on a Sunday. I was third in line at 7:10 am. By 7:30, the line had gotten fairly long. The baker-owner Dan opened the door to welcome us into the beautiful, modern storefront filled with his friendly staff. One of the baristas had little cups of drip coffee for the customers. I ordered a cinnamon knot, mango coconut cruffin, and ham and cheese croissant from the gorgeous array of pastries and cookies, plus an iced latte. As I waited for my latte, I watched as person after person checked out with multiple large boxes of pastries. If you want your pick of items, would definitely come early because of this. Each of the pastries was phenomenal. The ham and cheese croissant had the right amount of ham and cheese while still enabling you to enjoy the flaky, crispy croissant around it. Nicely filling, too. The cinnamon knot was a lot more complex than it looked. It was filled with a vanilla pastry cream with orange zest, was perfectly laminated, and dusted with just enough cinnamon to enjoy all the flavors. Finally, the cruffin: wow! So much fresh mango filling alongside pastry cream in its lovingly crafted croissant exterior. The iced latte was also very nice, and the baristas here are friendly. Dan said they're trying to get set up with a window for just coffee orders so you don't have to wait in the pastry line. Worth the wait. Pastry prices are higher than average for Chicago, but the quality and creativity makes them fair.

Got there at 7:40AM (they open at 8), got inside around 8:20, and was out by 8:30 with everything. Honestly a smooth experience and worth the hype!! The pastries are insane. The fancy chocolate croissant is literally a dream. Super flaky, crispy, and the chocolate tastes really high quality with a nice crunch. 9.5/10. The chocolate gochujang & marmalade danish was even more unique. Flaky layers with that citrusy sweetness and a slight spicy kick that works so well together. 9.7/10. The ham & cheese croissant was solid and crispy 8/10, and the chocolate sourdough banana bread was also really good 8.5/10. The space is modern, and you can tell they really care about what they're doing. Staff were all smiling, and even saw Dan there at the register which was cool. Overall just a really great experience!!

Bad Butter in Chicago was really good! We arrived right before they opened, and the wait was only about 15 minutes. It's a limited menu, but they perfect every item. I had their ham and cheese croissant, and it was so good. The flavors balanced perfectly, and the layers were just incredible. Another favorite was the miso salted caramel butter cookie, absolutely divine! The monkey bread was just okay for me, it was tasty, but I felt like it needed some protein to really round it out. The milk chocolate chip cookie was fine as well. Overall, a fantastic spot for baked goods in the morning and definitely worth a visit!

Went on their grand opening day expecting at least a 1.5-hour wait - and yes, it did take that long haha. The bakery was definitely a little underprepared for the amount of support, but I got lucky and was still able to grab some of their classic options: the basic croissant, danish, ham and cheese croissant, almond croissant, and chocolate cookie. I didn't get coffee this time, and honestly, I think I'll probably stick to the baked goods here. Overall, a fun grand opening experience, and great to see Chef Dan in person after years of just picking up from Emily Hotel haha.

Wow I get the hype. We finally scored some pastries and loved trying each one. For the savory options, we had the pretzel roll and the monkey bread as well as the focaccia. The pretzel roll was simple but good while the monkey bread was tasty all the way through. However, the focaccia was just underwhelming. For the sweet options, we had the mango croissant, chocolate orange gochujang pastry, and the chocolate chip cookie. Somehow every single one was incredible and worked so well with the flavors.

Holy moly! One day I hope to wake up early enough to get my hands on their full menu, but even coming later, everything I tried was delicious, but the mango cruffin was my favorite by far! Very solid coffee too. I hope the line gets more manageable soon or they kick up production to not sell out so fast, but I'll definitely be back! (No seating, take out only, just a heads up)

First things first: make sure you order ahead on their website and pick up at the Emily Hotel. It's not a walk-in-and-browse kind of place, and trust me, you don't want to miss out because they sell out fast. The selection is insane -- so many pastries, croissants, and seasonal baked goods that it's honestly hard to choose. Every single thing we tried was next-level. The sourdough banana bread was hands down the best I've ever had. Perfectly moist, deep flavor, not overly sweet -- just unreal. The chocolate chip cookies? AMAZING. I'm not exaggerating when I say I can't stop thinking about them. They were perfectly sweet but with that rich, dark chocolate depth that makes them feel elevated and not basic at all. The moneybread with garlic and rosemary was the only savory option we got -- and we made a huge mistake only ordering one. We should've ordered ten. It was beyond delicious. Flaky, crispy, insanely flavorful. That buttery, herby crunch... OMFG. It might've been my favorite bite of the day. The chocolate croissant was also excellent -- beautifully flaky with rich chocolate inside. This place is hyped for a reason. It's worth it. I cannot wait to go back and order more (and definitely stocking up on that moneybread next time).

Have been buying pastries from Bad Butter when it was called Dan the Baker. The stuff is still consistently good, but my only complaint is now you need to physically wait in line to get them

I saw Bad Butter on tik tok and made my brother bring me some to Milwaukee from Chicago. We tried the s'mores croissant, apple custard danish, and the eggnog and caramel cruffin. We enjoyed trying each but both agreed that the apple danish was amazing and both of our favorites. I would definitely return and get it again. As far as ordering, they make it easy with text messages to remind you of the drop if you sign up, and I messaged them and asked a question on pick up day and they were responsive and helpful. I definitely recommend.

I've been trying to get my hands on some Bad Butter treats forever, so finally snagging a drop felt like winning a pastry lottery. Since everything goes fast, you have to order on Monday for a weekend pickup and the popular items really do sell out in seconds! Pickup was super easy at the hotel café, though I was a little confused at first since the café sells many of the same items. It made me wonder if the preorder is truly necessary, or if some items are available day-of. We tried four things: the pecan monkey bread, s'mores croissant, apple custard danish, and pain suisse. Everything was delicious and absolutely worth the hype. My top picks were the s'mores croissant and the monkey bread--both incredibly fluffy and so, so good. Would 100% go back!

Were the pastries I ordered from Bad Butter good? Sure. But I disliked having the pressure of having to get my order in a week in advance and then locking myself in to having to drive an hour to pick them up on a day when I wasn't feeling great. There are so many great bakeries in Chicago, I don't think I would ever bother with the hassle again. Great option if you don't mind ordering days in advance and know you will be close by.

We walked into a casual and modern space that works well for stopping by after a meal or meeting up with friends for something sweet. The interior is bright and clean, with a relaxed energy that makes it easy to settle in for a dessert without feeling rushed. The menu has a wide range of options, from shaved ice and mango sago to cakes and other fruit desserts, making it easy to find something depending on your mood. The mango mille crepe cake is one of the highlights and a great representation of what the shop does well. We ordered a slice and found the cake made with thin layers of crepe stacked together with cream and fresh mango, creating a texture that feels light while still being satisfying. The layers are soft and delicate, and the mango adds a bright fruitiness that keeps the dessert from feeling overly heavy or too sweet. The balance between the creamy layers and the fresh mango flavor made it feel more refreshing than a traditional cake, especially with the mango being ripe and fragrant. It was also one of the better choices for sharing, as the slice was generous enough to pass around the table. Beyond the mille crepe cake, the menu has plenty of variety with options like mango shaved ice, mango sticky rice, and fruit-based drinks. We appreciated that the desserts are presented carefully, making the experience feel more like a sit-down dessert stop rather than just grabbing something quick. The shaved ice was light and fluffy, with a good amount of mango and toppings that added texture without overwhelming the base. The fruit-based drinks were also refreshing and served as a nice palate cleanser between the richer desserts. The shop can get busy, especially after dinner hours, but the line usually moves along at a steady pace. The staff handled the flow efficiently, and the turnover was fast enough that even with a small wait, we were seated quickly. The seating area is comfortable, and the energy of the room stays lively without becoming too loud. Mango Mango Dessert is a solid Chinatown dessert destination if you are looking for fruit-forward sweets with a lighter, refreshing style. The mango mille crepe cake is a must-try for first visits and one of the items that best captures the appeal of the menu, offering a dessert that feels both visually appealing and satisfying to eat.
