Ranch Camp is one of my favorite restaurants (anywhere, not just Stowe), and I was excited to try out Backyard, which is owned/operated by the same people. Located just behind Ranch Camp, there's ample parking, and access to a mountain bike path. I'm vegetarian, and the choices are more limited at Backyard, as opposed to Ranch Camp (Ranch camp you can add tofu to a salad, And has multiple vegan options; Backyard lacks those options). One of my favorite dishes from Ranch Camp is the nachos, and I was excited to try Backyard's nachos. The serving of nachos is massive - so much so that I didn't even touch my dinner (and my friend only had a bite of hers). The nachos are smothered in a creamy queso, with pickled jalapeños adding a pop of heat. For my main course I ordered the eggplant sandwich (thin fried slices of eggplant, with an aioli). It looks delicious but I was too full to try. I would go back again and recommend trying. However, if you are a vegan, I recommend going across the parking lot. read more

They have NFL Sunday ticket and its a locals bar which has really great bar food at an unexpected price which makes me LOVE this place. The bartender is super kind and attentive and he also cooked our food too. The outside is very spacious with plenty of group seating and has a TV outside facing the mountain rock which is beautiful. TWO pool tables which looked clean and well-maintained. Single mens/woman's bathrooms which were also cleaned and well maintained by the same amazing bartender. The fish tacos were lacking. Fish was okay, but they were swimming in flavorless pico de gallo, and the tortillas stuck to the serving dish. The nachos were not good. We went to this restaurant for dinner. I had the fish tacos and my partner had a hamburger which he said was one of the best he had ever had. The fish tacos were pretty good as well. It was a very lively young crowd, and there were dogs and children outside. They have indoor and outdoor seating. We are visiting Stowe and just by chance found this great restaurant. I'm so glad to see a new business thriving (under new management but same name) during COVID-19. We sat at the bar and enjoyed some local ciders and beers on tap. The bartenders were super attentive and gave off great vibes. It was extremely clean and you can tell they go above and beyond for Covid safety protocol with personal hand sanitizer bottles for every customer, QR code touch less menus and plexiglass barriers hanging to divide people. It doesn't look like much from the outside, but well worth a visit. They have a large indoor bar/eating area as well as an equally large outside seating area. Seating is first come first served, seat yourself. Our server was Lilly and she was awesome. She was a great change from the snobbish and "I don't give a crap" attitude we experienced in our several previous Stowe meals over the last couple days. Unfortunately, we're leaving Stowe tomorrow and the Backyard doesn't serve breakfast or we'd be back there again. Totally laid back but very attentive interaction with people who seemed to care. The menu was varied and while it is fairly typical bar / pub food, everything we had was served hot and was very flavorful. Among us, we had the BBQ burger, the salmon sandwich, the loaded tots, the Buffalo chicken tots and ice cold beer. By far the best meal experience we had here. I was skeptical with the past reviews but after talking with our waitress, she told us that the restaurant came under new management and the menu and layout totally changed, so keep that in mind when reading year old reviews. Great experience here. As the name suggests, it was hidden from the road and has backyard vibes with the campfire out back. They were clearly short-staffed but everyone was super helpful and service was overall very good. This was the worst place we went all weekend! Granted the weekend was busy and we were welcomed/warned about the wait; patio service did not exist. The "bartender/server," took about 20 minutes to welcome/take a drink request but actually never took the drink request just merely told us there was a full service bar inside. It was relatively cool that night so we opted to dine outside to avoid the chaos of inside however after 30 minutes I just walked inside and ordered drinks with cash. Then I proceeded to watch the employee working outside constantly walk through the patio door only to puff his vape and disappear again. At approximately an hour the table next to us ordered and I summoned the waiter to our table, literally right next to it as I was petting their dog. He looked confused, took our order, and disappeared. 45 minutes later food was delivered to the patio and served to two people who had not been there any longer than 30 minutes at this point it had been nearly 1:45. The couple next to us excused themselves and so did we. Why keep the patio open if your staff is incompetent or unable to articulate the night issues? The original hostess at the front door was but the outdoor host/bartender/employee was utterly incompetent. I think if the kitchen is over worked due to tourists then my recommendation would be to close the patio to drinks only or close it completely. Cool looking spot will probably never return. Too many places to eat, that welcome the business and manage it accordingly. read more
