Our first visit, but definitely not our last! The chicken and ribs were very good and very good values. They were nice enough to let us switch the sides to a large, good salad. The waitress was excellent and the outdoor seating very pleasant. BYO too! The menu also has has many Portuguese dishes. They do a lot of takeout and clearly have a devoted clientele--and we saw why! I was beyond excited for dinner with my family last night, until I TRIED to take the first bite out of my beef short rib. the meat was supposed to be medium, but it was so tough that it felt like you were chewing on leather. almost $22 for a rib platter and i get a strip of nasty, tough, leathery substance instead. we couldn't even eat it; we would've had to tug on and fight our food if we wanted to. i had higher hopes for the chicken until i tried that as well and it too was dry and unpleasant. thank goodness they added some hot sauce because i would not have been able to eat that any other way. The fries were soggy and chewy as if they were super old and just sitting there all day or even the night before. only reason for one star is because the rice was decent. and i tried to eat what i could since i already spent about $50 on 2 platters and beans. i've never posted a review in my life , but i was so disappointed i went out of my way to do this so that everyone can know. YUCK! This is probably the worst Portuguese Barbeque I have ever tasted. The chicken had a strange, pungent taste to it. Whatever sauce they use on it is nasty. We were loyal customers since the beginning of grand opening. Had dinner there at least 3 times a week. one night we ordered take out dishes. we had to return one of the dishes because it was burnt. We had to drive out of my way to return the food. The owners wife was very rude and nasty, when my husband explained to her that not only should they replace the burnt dish but the other one as well because by the time we get back home the food would be cold. He was told by her "that's your problem, heat it up"! We already gave your wife a free replacement. That was for the burnt dish. When we opened the tray in front of her, he asked her to look at it and if she would eat it. She showed her cook and he admitted that he noticed the food to be over cooked/burnt when they sold it. No apology, nothing! This is how she treats her customers! The owner was always pleasant and nice to talk to every time we ate there. We asked to speak to him and she refused to get him. We ordered food for take out, and keep in mind, you get a LOT of rice & veggies with every order. The portions are HUGE. We got the shrimp w/ garlic sauce, the ribs, the steak, and the chicken. Each dish came in buffet serving trays, (that's how much rice and veggies they give you!). I would definitely recommend ordering half sizes, or at least asking to not get a lot of rice & veggies if you're getting a lot of food. Hit up the backyard today for lunch with some colleagues from work. Happy to say that we all enjoyed our lunch. I opted for the Chicken and Rib combo with beef ribs and sides of veggies and fries. Here are some of the things I liked 1. They serve hot mini Portuguese Rolls and olives to every table 2. Their portions are immense, even for the lunch crowd 3, The waitress was extremely accommodating (allowed me to change my combo from the normal pork ribs to beef ribs, with out Up charge) BTW that was a mistake; the pork ribs f-ing rock. 4. My favorite local joint in kenilworth. Portion size is hearty! My boyfriend and I share the full size of the short ribs with veggies (broccoli, carrots, cauliflower) and yellow rice. We also add french fries to the order from time to time (super crunchy!!). My boyfriend is not small.. and we cant finish this dish together! I love their short ribs because it reminds me of korean galbi but a little bit thicker. The full portion comes with 4 pieces. Yummmmmm! Also, every table gets bread with a cup of olives with red pepper flakes. I like to dip my bread into the olive oil. so yum. Cant review about anything else on their menu. We used to come here for lunch, but then it started taking a long time and we couldn't swing it anymore. Today we took a chance. It is pricey for lunch. We try to stay around $10/ person, but it averaged out to $15, with a mix of sandwiches, salads, and platters. Everyone was happy! It was great! They make shrimp or chicken in garlic sauce; a little salty but either dish is delicious. Their bbq chicken or ribs is also very good. They have a half order which is plenty food for 1 person and maybe leftovers. For about $5 more, a whole order would be pretty tough for someone to finish in one sitting. For me, the whole order means I have an extra delicious meal to take home for $5. You get 2 sides from rice, beans, salad, vegetables and (huge amounts) of french fries or Spanish fries. I'm trying to cut back on fried foods, these fries are dangerous. When I was there recently, they had a special of garlic shrimp in garlic sauce. The regular shrimp dish in garlic sauce is small shrimp. The special was 10 large shrimp in garlic sauce wonderfully prepared. This one didn't make it to leftovers. Service was good as are the prices. There's street parking and a small lot behind the restaurant, and a larger lot behind and across a small street. The place is not fancy in the least but if good food is what you 're after, and that works for me, you won't be sorry you went. Just go on a day you're not counting calories. read more

In terms of quantity, the order comes several large chunks of chicken and 2-4 ribs depending on half vs whole order. This is accompanied by a lot of rice (be sure to pick rice as a side!). The chicken was tasteful on the outside, but slightly dry on the inside. The ribs are slightly charred to enhance taste but the exterior can be tough to chew through. There is no accompanying special sauces (hot sauce is provided) so the meat may leave your mouth thristing for water. No additional sauces are added, so the meat retains a charred, bbqed flavor (opinions on taste will depend on your personal preference for char). Staff: Staff is very friendly and will recommend appropriate proportions. Ambiance: There are tables to sit and eat both inside and immediately outside the restaurant. Since the grills are right behind the counter, the restaurant gets very warm so it is recommended to eat outside, if the weather permits. Value: Recommend sharing half order for two people because it comes with a many pieces of meat and a lot of rice. This comes out to about $6-7 per person. read more

Backyard Grill! Geez what a place... I went there today and I saw this guy having pork ribs... and automatically my mouth watered. I ordered the combo with half chicken and half ribs and the portion was huuuuuge... Finishing the plate was a difficult task. The waitresses are gorgeous, which is very shallow of me but heck, I'm a guy. Besides them being beautiful, they will take care of you like its family. We love Portuguese food and enjoy trying various Union County spots. We give the edge to the Backyard over Clark BBQ. Only thing missing is Sangria. No alcohol is served. Never had an off meal here. Was in the area picking up soccer uniforms from Kix n' Sticks and this place had a very good review. Nice little town and there's ample parking around. There's 2 areas - a counter with a couple of tables and a dining room on the other side. They've got the heaviest, noisiest chairs, the sound it makes when you move it is really loud. Bread and olives were served, the bread was fresh and warm, delicious. Anyway - the food: my daughter was really looking forward to her favorite Skirt steak, but they were out, so she settled for top sirloin with rice and french fries. The fries were really crispy - very good. My wife and I shared the full plate of ribs. The barbecue is good, but not on a par with Brasilia. Meat is okay, but not tender enough.
