A little bit of this and a little bit of that, but something for everyone. While I miss the "scoop…read moreand salad" with an Otis Spunkmeyer chocolate chip cookie from Leos, there are many plusses for the breakfast and chicken sandwiches. I have had one of the cranberry salads to go which is fairly normal for what it is. I went back a second time to sit down and have one of the chicken sandwiches, which is a beautiful piece of chicken in a delicious roll, and lots of good drink options. I am the kind of person who likes to go out for dinner and pecks through the day, so sandwiches aren't always my go to food for breakfast/lunch because they are a bit heavy for a midday meal for me. Other people I know who swear by these sandwiches will choose to go to Ray Ray's every time over one of the fast food options for certain. If you aren't in the mood for a bagel at the new bagel place, this is an option that you might want to keep in your back pocket. When I went there, it must've been a school break because I believe they were children that were helping, and it had a really warm family vibe with friendly service.

We opted for a spicy chicken sandwich and a cranberry walnut salad. The sandwich was robust and the sweet potato fries came with a house-made peach honey mustard that was over the top. The salad was giant and packed with so many walnuts and cranberries that I couldn't finish it all. Roasted Brussels sprout leaves sprinkled on top added the perfect umami twist. Easy off and on from the MassPike. Bonus: live music (good!) on Saturday afternoons.

After the big St. Patrick's Day Race, we stopped in after Yelp suggested this was both on our way home AND a better bet than the food trucks. We were surprised that parking was a breeze, with multiple entrances. The seating os designed to fit couples or larger groups comfortably, and you can tell the local love to sit around the long bar and chat. We loved our booth! The staff was quick, knew a lot about the different food options, and cocktail selection and beer selection was great. We chose a different cocktail from the list, and shared a bunch of appetizers. The sprouts were good, and the wings were tasty. I think the only thing that got a "nah" was the crab cake. I definitely have it on my list to go back for a meal, noting several dinner specials that met my creative palette.

Upon arrival, we were greeted and seated in the bar area, which features a long bar and high-top tables. They have a solid selection of beer and alcohol. We started with the chili, topped with cheese and served with chips for dipping--it was delicious. My wife ordered the turkey club, while I opted for the tomato bisque with a grilled cheese sandwich. She enjoyed her club, and I loved my grilled cheese; it was very cheesy and made with Texas toast. However, I found the bisque a bit too thick for my taste. The servers were friendly, and we'll definitely return. I learned that they have separate lunch and dinner menus--unfortunately, I didn't realize I was looking at the dinner menu when I saw the steak, which isn't available during lunch.

Maybe a little salty, but honestly so am I when I think about all the overcooked shrimp I've paid for. These scrimps were perfectly cooked. Like. PERFECTLY cooked. Snappy. Scrumptious. I threw in the mac and cheese as a test, since it's usually where restaurants get lazy. But when my eyes met the cavatappi... good night. Creamy, rich, ooey gooey, with noodles standing strong against the reputation of bland mush. Cheese clung to every curve like a last desperate embrace. Not an ounce of mush. Casting the right noodle for the role is too often an overlooked detail. And oh the crunch on that chicken! Juicy, crispy, seasoned with ruthless precision. That's the kind of chicken that brings you right back. It's ready to recruit you. No wonder it's the mascot. Sign me up. I got a little ginger lime situation from the fridge. A brand called Something & Nothing. How tantalized am I by an undiscovered thing? Very. From the nod to nihilism to the contents of delight, I'm here for it. I definitely appreciate the rare beverage finds amidst the usual suspects. And the space itself? Greenery softening the edges, decor that disarms you, hospitality that feels too warm to be accidental. It's all part of the design. I am Jack's complete lack of disappointment. They're doing it. And I will be talking about it.

Service is friendly, ambience is...well...basically absent. However I won't call the place…read moreterrible, it's just dated/grandma decorated, and a bit cramped. The issue driving a two star review is...the food. I've heard from a few locals that have been in the area a lot longer than me...that it was once quite good and was much under prior ownership. Can't speak to that much, but it wouldn't surprise me. All the menu tastes like someone else cooking another cooks food...or tier interpretation of it. You can tell there were some decent ideas here, destroyed by different hands and taste. The somewhat surprising amount of business the Russell Inn appears to pull in is certainly in part due to the fact it's the only restaurant in a small town, anything else is around a 15 minute drive away for most people. Clearly people within range have dropped their standards a bit, or just don't care so much...it's cheap, the portions are ridiculous (I mean this, the calzones are massive beyond reason...and the pizzas, starting at medium being larger than most large pies. It goes up from there to catering/banquet style massive. Sounds good right? Well it sure would be...if the product was actually good. Waxy yellow cheese, bland sauce, lower quality toppings, etc. This results in pizzas tasting as if they have been sitting out in open for 30-45 minutes before they get to you...even when they haven't. The salads are an unceremonious pile of cold cuts chopped up over cheap iceberg lettuce, also odd flavors in here, can't quite identify them, beyond frozen, old tasting. Some menu choices are downright odd no matter the ingredients. Seafood salad stuffed mushrooms? Yeah, they taste like they sound pretty much. This place is a prime candidate for Kitchen Nightmares, a Gordon Ramsey visit would do wonders for it. Just under the surface, this weird food with ridiculous portions quite possibly exists a better restaurant. It just needs better recipes, better quality ingredients, and a better chef. These menu items all taste like they were conceptually built with ingredients that are cheap and available, and never tasted by those preparing them. Just put out there as something they think is acceptable to the locals, average, uninspired flavors and preparation. Not this local so much, they are extreme desperation for me.
