How can you not fall in love with their patio? The plants, shade umbrellas, and water feature make this place idyllic for a lunchtime escape. Although, you may not want to leave. But paying almost $13 dollars for a cold ham and swiss on rye, mind you thats all it had meat, cheese and mustard. They dont offer lettuce, tomatoes nothing. My favorite thing about this place is the outside patio. Super eclectic and lots of cool knick knacks and its very well shaded. It has a cool garden-jungle vibe to it. It was a little on the chilly side when we went but it was too cool to not sit outside since it was my first time. We went around 1pm on a Wednesday, we were expecting there to be a big line out the door because that's what we kept hearing but we walked right in. I think they could tell it was our first time because we were just kinda staring at the menu. It's a pretty simple menu. I got turkey, my husband got the roast beef. We also got the side of beans and a slice of banana cream pie and 2 drinks. It came out to almost $40. So I guess we were expecting these sandwiches to be the best of our lives. They were, for lack of a better word, ehhh. The sandwiches weren't bad by any means. The roast beef was definitely the better choice. But I feel like for the price it was, I might as well have just stayed home and made my own. The beans were pretty delicious, although the little paper cups they put them in are kinda inconvenient because they kinda just turn into a puddle. The banana cream pie was their saving grace. I would go back just for the pie. The staff was super friendly and when we sat down, they kept asking if we needed anything and were super fast about getting us boxes or anything else we needed. I think that it's definitely a cool spot to get lunch, but I wouldn't bring anyone new. I would only come with someone who has been here before and likes coming here. Nice place as long as you don't have any requests. I wanted lettuce on my sandwich (simple request, right?) Was told that's not how they make them here. Yes, they have lettuce, because they carry salads. Went ahead and got a sandwich without lettuce. A few minutes later the waitress came to my table with a small plate of lettuce. She said she normally couldn't do that, but the owner wasn't there at the time. No sooner did I get the lettuce on my sandwich, the here comes the owner. "Is there a problem with your sandwich?" I told him no, that I only wanted a little lettuce on my sandwich. He proceeded to berate me in front of the other customers that "this isn't how we makes sandwiches here. Everyone does it differently and this is how we do it. How does it taste?" I told him, "delicious, now that I have lettuce". He walked away, but immediately came back with a piece of banana pie and tossed it on the table, " here" and walked away. The pie almost bounced off the plate when it hit the table. We just had lunch here today and we all enjoyed it very much! Everyone was very welcoming and after hearing it was our first time helped us out with ordering. Also , the boss was very rude in confronting my boyfriend about sitting somewhere - just because the boss didn't like the particular area . This is a great sandwich place for the atmosphere on a nice day. I love being able to sit outside and enjoy lunch with a friend. The sandwiches are good- standard meat & cheese, no veggies or anything added, but still good. Your meal comes with a trip to the pickle bar which is great- pasta salad, fresh veggies, pickled veggies. Yum! While you order at the counter and take your food to a table of your choice, they still have waitresses roaming around and asking if you need napkins or refills and then clearing your plates when you're done. I had the corned beef sandwich and my wife had the Pastrami and they were both stacked very high with meat and was Simply Delicious. Along with that we tried their potato salad which was out of this world and your sandwich also comes with an all-you-can-eat pasta and vegetable bar. The service was great and everyone was so friendly. The patio outside is just a beautiful spot to enjoy the Fantastic meal. I recently moved to the inland empire and my search of great eateries did not fail me. Parking was a little difficult but well worth the short walk down the street even in 112 degree weather. I went to order a Roast beef sandwich on sourdough the gentleman making the sandwich asked if I would like Pastrami on it and that it is the house sandwich. It was roast beef and Pastrami dip with butter and mayo and Swiss cheese he even dipped the cheese and drizzled on the au jus on the pile of meat. I have had it other places and it is fatty and weird, but at Backstreet it was delish! You don't need to put anything on it, but I do like to add the cole slaw. It makes for a great taste experience. Now, I have to talk about the banana cream pie. I HATE bananas. My friend talked me into trying the pie, "because it will change your life". I had no idea how true that was! It was so delicious! The best thing about the place is that it has a large patio area that you can eat at. The large crowd must all live in apartments because it's just like sitting outside at your house in the backyard. When your sandwich appears you will realize that your kindergartener can apply here, because they rival in comparison to what you shall recieve. The "salad bar" here is a fancy term most shops call condiments. The menu if you look up the term boring in the dictionary, will have a copy of it so you can prepare ahead of time. For the cost and quality you might as well go to Subway Sandwiches. Even they have more to offer and you can go to Subway 10 times for the same price as one time here. It's been about six months since my last visit to Back Street: it's not for lack of craving but more my own stubbornness because of a lack of empathy on the part of a member of their staff. Obviously this is a good place to eat because they have people coming in and out constantly. Who am I to argue with an establishment whose food is tried and true? The food I've tried over the past couple of years has always been really good and their produce cart has great options. There is not complaint with any of that. My issue is with the customer service and lack of empathy we received on our last visit. My elderly mom walks with a cane due to arthritis in her knee which makes walking difficult on her. That coupled with Menier's disease which makes her unstable does not make her very steady on her feet which, in turn, requires me to give her my arm to stabilize her so that she's not weaving around. In my world, and I repeat "my world" going to a place like Back Street is challenging but I wanted us to enjoy their good food. Since you have to head in to the cashier to order and get your food then, majority of the time, head outside or next door to search for a table, I thought I'd be able to sit my mom down comfortably while I fetched our food. NOPE!! I had my mom sit down at a small table only to be told by a server that we weren't "allowed to sit down before we got our food." I had to have looked at her like she had two heads...are you kidding me? I proceeded to say "she has a hard time walking so I was trying to get her settled" to which she replied "Well if you want to sit first, you can take her over to that side over there" motioning to the seating through the gateway. She obviously didn't notice, or care, how much it took just to get us to this point which I suppose didn't matter to her either. She was rather patronizing when she said "Thank you!" She basically shooed us away and didn't care about anything but their "rule." I so wanted to say "I'm sorry to be such an inconvenience to you!" I think what added to her lack of empathy was that we got there close to opening so it's not as if they were full at that point or as if the number of people who were coming in behind us would've even filled the main patio. Had that been the case, I would've probably had a different reaction, but it was not the case this time. Obviously, in my world, no one else has to see the struggle and the worry of getting my mom to go out to eat anyway because of her limitations. In my mind I was then thinking "what the hell is the difference whether I sit her here or over there aside from more work on mine and my mom's part???" The last thing I want to do is to make my mom feel like a nuisance or a burden so I complied with the woman's request. All the while in my head I was stressing out thinking "how in the world am I going to walk my mom back inside, get our food tray and walk her back outside for seating with her and a considerable amount of her weight and stress of her gait on my arm?" At that point I was just about to cry and I didn't want to leave because I didn't want my mom to see or feel my absolute frustration. We went in, ordered our food and the cashier had a young woman help us with our food tray, thanks be to God. All this to then sit back down at the table I initially sat my mom at...Lo and behold, no one else sat there from the time we first tried to the time we actually conformed to their "rule" and sat down to enjoy our food. I had to try really hard to enjoy the rest of the visit because I was truly upset and frustrated. I still had to get up and go back to get our produce which was yet another trip. Even six months later, I still feel frustrated by such a lack of empathy and customer service on that one woman's part. Having worked in the food industry for 18 years, customer service is hands down the one thing that will either draw people in and return or turn them away...good food is just a bonus. I get "the rules," but please don't get so caught up in them that you forget to see people. I'm sure there are a lot of factors that had this establishment create a rule that worked best for them but I also know that is a rule that just doesn't work for me and "my world" so now I KNOW that I will not be back.
