The gas fireplace that heats the pavilion.

We had a relaxing lunch here on a Friday afternoon. The beers were surprisingly tasty. We liked the wit beer, the festival wheat, and the reliance road red. (The bartender David let me also taste the lemon basil wheat and the cilantro wheat, but I didn't love either of those). The sandwiches were decent - we got the pulled pork and pulled chicken and I preferred the chicken (pork was a little too mushy). The coleslaw and mac and cheese sides weren't that exciting. Come here for the beer and the rustic atmosphere. They are super dog friendly, with a heated enclosed pavilion for people with pups, which our pooch enjoyed!

Sides. Cole slaw was good but the Mac & cheese missed.

This was a minor disappointment. But let me explain... When rating a business, I will not include poor/incredible service. Comments on the staff, can break a business, despite the higher quality of the food/drinks. Additionally I will not add the atmosphere into the rating, but will suggest that the owners pay attention. That said, the staff were friendly and knowledgeable about the beers. The bartender offered tastes according to our regular beers, and he did a good job of it. The atmosphere was exactly as advertised, a farm. The front buildings were nice but the tap room was more like a small logged cabin. FYI dog friendly! Another point is the feral cats were kittens. If you are allergic stay inside the tap room in the loft. A bonus space available to the adults, just inside the taproom. TBH these were cute and I have heard of breweries housing feral cats to assist with the rodent population, so kudos to the owner. As for the beer, the Weisse hit the spot. A nice pour with a fresh wheat flavor and a good finish, although the ABV was a bit higher than I was used to, I was still able to enjoy a few sips into the second beer without concern that I was driving. I also tried the Pilsner, a nice flavor, and the perfect ABV for those who want a second drink. Special note/ shout out to this place for offering a NEAR-BEER, the 2.9 ABV is just a great way to enjoy without any concerns of TOO MUCH. (Keep in mind we all have our limits.) the taste I had was very good! Finally, the food. This fell short, we ordered the turkey Reuben, which was packaged turkey slices-think Carl Buddig brand, the slices were perfectly round and cut the exact same size. The chicken salad had a bit too much mayo and was likely from a tub from the local store. I was not super happy with that, but it had nothing to do with the attraction-the beer! So for the rating, I have been visiting a few brew pubs as late and to me this one falls short. There is potential but at the moment it needs work.

Quickest brewery visit ever! Mediocre beer, staff not very friendly considering they hardly had and customers. Food was nothing special at all. The wedding venue may be good but this taproom was dirty and uninviting. We drank our one beer and quickly ate out food and left.

Outdoor space, enclosed.

Great place with abundant selection of beer. Very pleased with food offerings. Hubby and I both got burgers w different sides. Everything was delicious and reasonably priced. The gentleman at the counter did not seem particularly enthused to ring us up, but other than that, no negatives. Was able to bring our pup which was a nice perk. Would return.

Before you get to this place, you think you may have taken a wrong turn. It looks like you are just driving through a rural section of Va, and then there it is. The first large building you see in only part of the brewery operation. The large front building is a large room that had the upstairs rented out when we were there. There is indoor and outdoor seating. The upper building just has a few beers and wines to pick from. However, if you go down to the lower cottage there is a larger beer selection. There is also indoor and outdoor seating there. In addition, you can park at either location This is a pretty cool place. The beer that we tried was ok and we enjoyed hanging out there. My only negative is that at the bar serving area, they only have one ipad that can ring you out... so even if there are two servers- they are waiting on the other person to finish the transaction which slows the process down.

Tasting flight of 4 for $12. Worth every penny.

This place is a gem! Stopped by for lunch and a tasting. 5 min from downtown Middletown. We will be back!

Found this quiet little gem on "Harvest Hosts" a camping (membership) Ap where you can spend a night in the parking lot of participating breweries, wineries, golf course and farms. The Sunflower Cottage Herb Farm is home to this backyard brewery. We were impressed by the 20+ tap options of their own beer concoctions. I enjoyed the Shenandoah Sunset IPA while my spousal unit appreciated the Backyard Blonde. Picnic tables outdoors were a great place to enjoy a cold beer. Camping was quiet and the air was fresh. We'd return on another trip from Texas to NH.

View from road. Not the building we were in

Worth a stop if the location works for you. On our way to Blackwater Falls. Looking for a farm brewery. It fit the bill. Beer perfectly fine. Nothing special. My husband and I each ordered a flight so tasted 8 beers total. 1 or 2 I disliked. Rest were fine. Sat outside. Lovely day. Inside is very small and dark. Bartender is not the warmest guy I ever met. That's for sure! Didn't try any food. Would be fine with stopping here again but wouldn't go out of my way.

Some friends of mine have visited Backroom Brewery a couple of times - and raved about how good the Ales and beers are. So I found myself in the general area on the way back on my trip home from New York and decided to check the place out. It's out on a very rural road in a little unassuming building. I ordered a flight of six Ales - you tell them which six you want (or in my case, which two I did not want). They serve the Ales to you in a cool little serving tray with chalk used to denote which Ale is which (see attached pic.) I had the Lemon Basil, Reliance Road Red Irish Red Ale, Pluperfect Porter, Oatmeal Stout, Hop Harvest Party Ale (a Pale Ale), and an India Black Ale. I enjoyed tasting all of them - but would never order a pint of the Lemon Basil - just not my thing. I'm thinking the Lemon Basil might make an interesting component in the kitchen to a sauce or a salad dressing. Of the remaining five Ales - all were excellent! I would order any one of them and would enjoy it! I need to come back here soon and try them again when I have more time to sit, hang out, and relax!

Awesome awesome awesome. A new reason to visit Middletown. Normally at a new brewery I find one or two beers I kinda like. Here, I liked-to-loved all of my tastings. They also have a decent selection of food. Backroom has a wide assortment of brews and rotate them at a regular clip; so if you like something BUY IT, because next week it might not be there. You can try a flight of 4 beers, or mini tastings of 6 (they come in what looks like chemistry vials). I did the mini flight of 6. In order of most to least love, I had the Stout (which I also got a pint of), Pumpkin Porter, Holiday Ale, Blonde, Amber, and Cilantro Lime. Even the Cilantro was good enough to try, just to experiment. I skipped the IPAs. One thing I admire about this place is their 'niche' is to experiment with various brewing herbs beyond your regular hops. Because these herbs are seasonal, their brewing menu is closely tied to the season. It also helps that they are an active farm (although they must be a bunch of tipsy farmers!). My server was also great; he looooved chatting about beer and was happy to give the names of several of his local favorites. This place is basically in the middle of nowhere, but worth a trip.

We knew nothing about this place so it was such a great surprise to pull up to such a cute place. I am not a big beer person but i go with the flow. But that didnt matter as soon as i asked what kind of beer do you have for the girl that doesnt like beer the owner said well i have some lemonade here i can make you a shandy. SOLD! thank you for making your none beer liking customers right at home in a brewery. The brewery itself was so cute and cozy and as soon as we walked in i said someone is making chilli and i need it. So we ordered that and the picnic basket. Was blown away because both choices were exactly what i needed. The chili was so yummy and a little bit spicy. The picnic basket had this dip that i could not stop eating even after the bread and the crackers we used to dip were gone. This brewery has board games and what looks like space for live music that would be perfect chill night out. My friends all tried beer and they all liked it. I know nothing of hops and what not so i have nothing to add here but my shandy was great and if we didnt have other stops to make i would have definitely would have a second. if you ever find yourself in virginia and in need of a nice place to hang out, watch the game or if you ware craving chilli, head here everyone is nice and welcoming and you will get good food and drinks

I particularly loved the beer called "cock and pull it" and the oatmeal stout they had. They have limited hours now due to COVID-19, but definitely worth checking out and interacting with locals.

Not sure who would really be sitting out there.. Once inside,, the Brewery is spacious with enough seating both bar and tables for a good size group of beer dinners.  I sat at the bar and ordered a flight of all 10 beers they had on tap. All the beer at Escutcheon is drinkable, crushable and reasonably price for $6-7 a pint. And, the beer here is true to style.  No extra flavors, just good beer by the numbers. Brian was our beertender and he was great.  Thanks Brian, your sense of humor and knowledge of the beer as well as nautical terms made our night way better.  The brewers name is John and he brews clean flavors.  It is comforting when the beers taste like what they are. When me and my girlfriend take road trips or mini vacations we try to hit up every brewery in that area and/or surrounding areas. On a recent birthday trip to Rocky Gap Resort that my sweet and beautiful girlfriend arranged for us we stopped in here during the early evening last week. As we pulled up I liked the whole aesthetics of this place. So we walked in and the place was pretty busy for an early Sunday evening but I believe it was because of the musicians that were scheduled to play. I noticed a lot of cool metal art which I later found out the owner created. That's awesome! We immediately walked up to the bar and ordered a couple of beers. - Shanty Irish Red Ale for my gf 4/5 - Iron Bird Hazy IPA for me 5/5 As we were enjoying our beers the people next to us received a food order and I looked at my girlfriend and said that pizza looks good. She replied, You want me to get us one? I giggled because she is a foodie like me lol. So we looked over the menu and decided on a 10" cheese pizza with mushrooms & jalapeños and a small order of chicken bites with honey mustard. So after about 10 minutes our buzzer went off and my gf walked up to get our food. We really enjoyed every bit of the pizza and chicken bites. Thank you! - Pizza 4/5 - Chicken Bites 4/5 While we were eating our food there were two people who started playing music and this is why this place gets 4 not 5 stars. Not because the musicians weren't good but because a place this size should never have people playing music so loud that you can't even have a normal conversation without saying huh or yelling. One of the two owners came over and asked if I'd like another beer and I could barely hear her and then the other owner came over and introduced himself to us and talked to us for about 5 minutes or so about the brewery, business, art, etc. and we could barely hear him and some things he said we couldn't make out, which sucks because I would have loved to chat with him without a loud distraction. Seemed like a very interesting and knowledgeable man. Next time my guy. Listen, I'm a huge brewery person and this brewery has great vibes and everything you could want to enjoy while visiting one but having musicians with amps blasting inside no longer makes it what makes breweries great and then turns into a bar. The whole reason of going to a brewery is to enjoy good beer, good food, and good conversation and that's impossible with music blasting. You can either be a bar or a brewery but you can't be both. Light music or acoustic would be much better in my opinion and my opinion should matter because I've been to hundreds of breweries across the United States. Either way the beer was good and the food was too. We will be back soon. Thanks for creating a nice and welcoming space. Sláinte

I've been here a few times before. My wife and I fell in love with this place the first time we were here. The owner is personable, friendly and enjoys his work. You can tell by the way he carries himself. And his wife is right next to him. With her own smile. All that said, the real reason for coming is the beer. This place has much to offer. On the menu are a Belgian white, a seasonal lager, Kolach, Hefeweizen, Irish red, stouts, IPAs, and a porter. I ask you to find that much of a choice in any other brewery and walk out angry. It cannot be done. For today I had tastes of the pumpkin, harvest ale and lager, before settling on the lager. TBH we came for the Hefeweizen but they just ran out. It was a winner all the way. The restaurant is a repurposed building that was once a blue jeans factory, and perhaps after that a radio station. We learned this from a local couple at a table next to us. As might be expected from a former factory, the restaurant is spacious and has a lot of character with old wooden floors and high ceilings. It's very casual. You order your beverages and food at the bar and grab a table to your liking. We chose one in the middle of room to give us a little space from the live band. Incidentally, it seems they have a live group every night of the week! I ordered a honey wheated beer for my wife and a pale ale for myself. Both were delicious. I ordered the Reuben and a cheeseburger for my wife. The Reuben wasn't up to say, a NY City deli standard, but it was pretty darn good and I would order it again. It came on marbled rye bread with a generous amount of meat. My wife loved her burger, and could only finish half of it. She got the sweet potato fries and I got regular fries. We both got a mountain of potatoes-- a challenge to finish in one sitting! The brewhouse is a gem--a delightful find in the quaint town sometimes referred to as the "other Woodstock." 4 and a half stars!
